To use wood as a structural element in vehicles, it is necessary to measure its physical properties locally in order to deduce its mechanical behaviour. Density is one of the characteristics that influences the most the mechanical properties, and it is on its measurement that this study will focus, using a technology that is still little studied for this application: terahertz radiation. Measurements using a Terahertz radar on samples will allow to obtain maps of the optical index and absorption coefficient, these values being linked to the density of the samples. The present study will consider wood species with various global densities and exhibiting local density pattern (growth rings) to assess the prediction of the density.

Cette thèse s’inscrit dans le projet ANR BOOST dont l’objectif est de démontrer la possibilité de l’utilisation du bois dans l’industrie du transport. Cette industrie étant très automatisée et ayant besoin de produits standardisés, la forte variabilité du bois fait qu’il est nécessaire d’analyser finement ses propriétés, afin d’appréhender au mieux son comportement. La masse volumique fait partie de ces propriétés que l’on souhaite mesurer. Actuellement, dans un contexte industriel, la technologie rayons X est employée pour une mesure localisée en ligne. Cette méthode est parfaitement adaptée à des cadences industrielles, cependant ce type de rayonnement est ionisant et par conséquent dangereux pour la santé. C’est la raison pour laquelle une nouvelle méthode est étudiée, avec des rayonnements Thz qui eux ne sont pas ionisant. Néanmoins, ces rayonnements ne sont pas encore autant communément utilisés que les rayons X et leurs applications dans le bois et en particulier pour la mesure de sa masse volumique n’a pas encore été beaucoup étudié. L’objectif ici est donc de se servir de la masse volumique mesurée par rayons X comme référence afin de valider puis exploiter la nouvelle méthode.

La thèse s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet ANR BOOST multipartenaires dont l’objectif général est de de faire la démonstration de la possibilité de l’utilisation du bois, sous forme de placages en produit lamellé, pour son utilisation comme matériau structurel pour les véhicules. Ses principaux atouts sont ses bonnes propriétés mécaniques rapportées à sa masse volumique et son impact environnemental avantageux lorsqu’il est produit et transformé localement. BOOST cible plus particulièrement les contreplaqués pour leur faible coût et le domaine des transports : aéronautique, naval, automobile ferroviaire. Jusqu’à présent, le contreplaqué, constitué de plusieurs plis de diverses essences orientées simplement à 0° ou 90° n’a été utilisé comme matériau structurel que dans l’aviation jusqu’à la deuxième guerre mondiale (1) et ponctuellement dans l’automobile (2) et le nautisme de loisir. Aussi, il existe un vaste champ de recherches pour ce matériau seul ou utilisé en sandwich, et BOOST a choisi de prioriser trois thématiques scientifiques.

When wooden supports of panel paintings have been severely altered or damaged and the original crossbeams are missing, new crossbeams or other types of auxiliary supports can be connected to the panel’s back-face in order to achieve desired effects including panel strengthening and control of deformations. In order to make such connection, the Restorers of Opificio delle Pietre Dure use small wooden blocks, each glued on the back face of the panel, and holding freely the head of a screw connected (often by means of springs) to the auxiliary support; the English term ‘buttons’ has been proposed for such blocks. This research examines in depth how the shape (conical or cylindrical) and dimensions (diameter in the 20-30 mm range, and thickness in the 3-6 mm range) of the buttons, all made from oak wood, influence their stiffness and load-carrying capacity. Each button was glued onto a dummy beech board by means of epoxy structural resin; a 3 mm diameter steel screw was inserted in each button’s hole prior to gluing, so that its head remained ‘trapped’ between the button’s cavity and the board. A short-term mechanical test was performed with a universal testing machine by axially pulling out the screw from the button. Load and displacement were recorded, and the load–displacement curves were analysed. The results showed that within the tested range: a) the ultimate load-carrying capacity of the buttons is only influenced by the residual thickness above the screw head, b) nor the shape nor the external diameter of the buttons have any influence on their mechanical properties, c) the stiffness (slope of the straight part of the load-displacement curve) of the connection depends only on the embedding of the screw head into the wood (i.e. mainly on the wood density).

National audience; Le but de cet article est d’étudier l’influence des paramètres de coupe sur la formation des bavures en coupe orthogonale. Pour ce faire, une étude en rabotage est réalisée avec des plaquettes carbures, sur un alliage d’Aluminium-Silicium, communément utilisé pour la fonte de culasses automobiles. Cette étude consiste à analyser l’influence de différents paramètres de coupe sur la formation des bavures dans le matériau. Les résultats obtenus permettent de conclure sur l’influence de certains paramètres de coupe sur la formation de la bavure, ainsi que son caractère aléatoire en coupe orthogonale, dû à l’hétérogénéité du matériau.

International audience; Burr formation during parts manufacturing is a significant problem that companies try to minimise or eliminate. The present work aims to study the burr formation mechanisms in a cast aluminium alloy. Orthogonal cutting tests are performed using different uncut chip thicknesses and tool rake angles. To analyse burr formation mechanisms, the work material state of stress and triaxiality distribution in the chip root was investigated via numerical simulations. Results show that the uncut chip thickness has an effect on burr morphology and burr cumulation while tool rake angle influences burr height on high uncut chip thicknesses.

International audience; Since 2004 an international research goup rof Wood Technologists has been given by the Louvre Museum the task of analysing the mechanical situation of the wooden panel on which Leonardo da Vinci painted his “Mona Lisa”, possibly between 1503 and 1504. The general purpose of such study was to evaluate influences which could possibly derive from environmental fluctuations in the showcase where the painting is exhibited, and any measure which could improve its conservation conditions. In order to acquire data about the mechanical behaviour of the panel, and to feed and calibrate appropriate simulation models, the team has not only set up a continuous monitoring by means of automatic equipment, but has also performed manual measurements on the occasion of the annual openings of the showcase where the masterpiece is conserved and exhibited.
