New readings and supplements on thirty-five ‘anonymous’ hexameter texts not contained in the recent collection of adespota APHex I.

In this chapter I take a fresh look at the hexameter adespoton P.Vindobonensis G. 26768a, arguing that the text does not cover the events preceding the race between Atalanta and Hippomenes, and that is not by Hesiod, as proposed by its editor. The name of Parthenopaeus, Atalanta’s son, who participated in the War of the Seven against Thebes, should be supplied in l. 12. Lines 20 ff. deal with Atalanta’s dream of her son’s death. The chapter also discusses the relation of this poem with two other anonymous hexameter fragments from Oxyrhynchus, P.Oxy. 2519 and P.Oxy. 859, which seem to deal with Parthenopaeus’ departure from Arcadia to Thebes.

The current note is a response to K. Bartol’s arguments against my readings of P.Oxy. LXIV 4410. It questions her interpretation of fr. 1 and suggests an alternative way of understanding the expression πρόβα κατωτέρω in fr. 1.2.

Revised text of the prologue of Philainis’ Peri Aphrodision as transmitted by P.Oxy. XXXIX 2891 fr. 1, where I propose to restore ll. 3-5 as με/θ’ ἡ̣[δον]ῆ̣ϲ τὸν βί̣ον δ̣ι̣ε/ξα[ιρεῖϲ]θ̣αι. The supplement solves a textual crux and sheds further light on the meaning of the exordium of Philainis’ erotic treatise.

In the late nineteenth century, two excavators from the University of Oxford uncovered a vast trove of naturally deteriorated papyri, numbering over 500,000 fragments, from the city of Oxyrhynchus. With varying levels and forms of deterioration, the identification of a papyrus fragment can become a repetitive, long, and exhausting process for a professional papyrologist. The University of Oxford's Ancient Lives project aims to accelerate the identification process through citizen science (or crowdsourcing). In the Ancient Lives interface, volunteer users identify letters by clicking on a location in the image to designate the presence of a letter. To date, over 7 million letter identifications from users across the world have been recorded in the Ancient Lives database. In this paper, we present a computational pipeline for converting crowdsourced letter identifications made through the Ancient Lives interface into digital consensus transcriptions of papyrus fragments. We conclude by explaining the usefulness of the pipeline output in the context of additional computational projects that aim to further accelerate the identification process.

This chapter shows the unlikeliness of R. Merkelbach's theory, highlighting the contradictions undermining such an ascription. It presents the text of the Supplementum Hellenisticum , with a few alterations. The chapter summarizes a variety of different views and approaches to text, and includes new suggestions by Peter Parsons privately communicated to the author. It has been noted that the passage draws significantly from the archaic formulaic patrimony, recalling Hesiod in particular "in tone and epithet". The compatibility of the plot of Simias of Rhodes' Apollo with the episode narrated in the papyrus text is also questionable. While it is impossible to say how extensively Simias treated the subject, it seems reasonable to think that the last section of Antoninus Liberalis' tale, entirely devoted to bird transformations, was developed exclusively in Boeus' Ornithogonia .
