The Fezouata Biota (Morocco) is a unique Early Ordovician fossil assemblage. The discovery of this biota revolutionized our understanding of Earth's early animal diversifications-the Cambrian Explosion and the Ordovician Radiation-by suggesting an evolutionary continuum between both events. Herein, we describe Taichoute, a new fossil locality from the Fezouata Shale. This locality extends the temporal distribution of fossil preservation from this formation into the upper Floian, while also expanding the range of depositional environments to more distal parts of the shelf. In Taichoute, most animals were transported by density flows, unlike the in-situ preservation of animals recovered in previously investigated Fezouata sites. Taichoute is dominated by three-dimensionally preserved, and heavily sclerotized fragments of large euarthropods-possibly representing nektobenthic/nektic bivalved taxa and/or hurdiid radiodonts. Resolving whether this dominance reflects a legitimate aspect of the original ecosystem or a preservational bias requires an in-depth assessment of the environmental conditions at this site. Human anatomy education often utilizes the essential practices of cadaver dissection and examination of prosected specimens. However, these exposures to human cadavers and confronting death can be stressful and anxiety-inducing for students. This study aims to understand the attitudes, reactions, fears, and states of anxiety that speech therapy students experience in the dissection room. To that end, a before-and-after cross-sectional analysis was conducted with speech therapy students undertaking a dissection course for the first time. An anonymous questionnaire was administered before and after the exercise to understand students' feelings and emotions. State-Trait Anxiety Inventory questionnaires (STAI-S and STAI-T) were used to evaluate anxiety levels. The results of the study revealed that baseline anxiety levels measured using the STAI-T remained stable and unchanged during the dissection room experience (P > 0.05). Levels of emotional anxiety measured using the STAI-S decreased, from 15.3 to 11.1 points (P < 0.05). In the initial phase of the study, before any contact with the dissection room environment, 17% of students experienced anxiety, and this rate remained unchanged by end of the session (P > 0.05). A total of 63.4% of students described having thoughts about life and death. After the session, 100% of students recommended the dissection exercise, giving it a mean score of 9.1/10 points. Anatomy is an important subject for students in the health sciences, and dissection and prosection exercises frequently involve a series of uncomfortable and stressful experiences. Experiences in the dissection room may challenge some students' emotional equilibria. However, students consider the exercise to be very useful in their education and recommend it. Trilobites were one of the most successful groups of marine arthropods during the Palaeozoic era, yet their soft-part anatomy is only known from a few exceptionally-preserved specimens found in a handful of localities from the Cambrian to the Devonian. This is because, even if the sclerotized appendages were not destroyed during early taphonomic stages, they are often overprinted by the three-dimensional, mineralised exoskeleton. Inferences about the ventral anatomy and behavioural activities of trilobites can also be derived from the ichnological record, which suggests that most Cruziana and Rusophycus trace fossils were possibly produced by the actions of trilobites. Three specimens of the asaphid trilobite Megistaspis (Ekeraspis) hammondi, have been discovered in the Lower Ordovician Fezouata Konservat-Lagerstätte of southern Morocco, preserving appendages and digestive tract. The digestive structures include a crop with digestive caeca, while the appendages display exopodal setae and slight heteropody (cephalic endopods larger and more spinose than thoracic and pygidial ones). The combination of these digestive structures and the heteropody has never been described together among trilobites, and the latter could assist in the understanding of the production of certain comb-like traces of the Cruziana rugosa group, which are extraordinarily abundant on the shallow marine shelves around Gondwana.

It's important that the patient follows these recommendations given by the nurse in order to prevent the appearance of the possible side effects.

Somatic cell counts, the bacteriological condition of the milk and antibodies against caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV) were measured monthly throughout lactation in 121 lactating goats of the Murcia-Granada breed in four commercial dairy goat herds. The prevalence of bacterial intramammary infection was 5.6 per cent and the prevalence of CAEV infection was 20.6 per cent. An analysis of variance revealed a significant effect of herd, intramammary infection and the interaction between intramammary infection and CAEV on the somatic cell count. In udder halves free of intramammary infection, the somatic cell counts were significantly lower in seronegative goats than in seropositive goats (P<0.05), but the difference was not significant in udder halves persistently infected by bacteria. There was a significant increase in somatic cell counts due to bacterial intramammary infection (P<0.01) in the seronegative goats, but this effect was not present in the seropositive animals.

During 1996, aborted bovine fetuses from dairy herds in norther Spain were examined by histopathological, immunohistochemical and serological methods for evidence of infection by Neospora caninum. Microscopical brain changes consistent with those of neosporosis were detected in 36 of 81 fetuses and specific antibodies (IFAT titres > or = 1/16) in 32 of 63. Eight fetuses with neurological lesions were seronegative, and eight without lesions were seropositive. In 25 of 34 fetal brains with lesions consistent with published descriptions of neosporosis, immunohistochemical analysis revealed the presence of N caninum antigen. Depending on the diagnostic criteria, the prevalence of neosporosis related to bovine abortion was between 32 and 57 per cent of the fetuses submitted and between 33 and 58 per cent of the herds involved. Data on the geographical, seasonal and fetal age distribution of the infection are given for the fetuses examined and the value of the different diagnostic methods is discussed.

To study psychological disorders and personality in a series of patients scheduled to undergo thyroidectomy under general anesthesia. We selected 33 patients who were to undergo thyroidectomy during the second half of 1993. Socio-demographic data were collected and the patients were given the following battery of psychometric tests: Cognitive Mini-Test (CMT), which explores the main cognitive areas; Goldberg's General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28), which is a tool for screening out probable cases of mental illness (mainly involving affective disorders); and Cattell's Personality Questionnaire 16-PF. With the GHQ-28 we detected a 29.6% prevalence of mental illness before surgery; this figure increased to 33.31% after surgery with a cut-off point of 5/6. Some 3.7% of this series of patients presented general cognitive disorders when evaluated with the CMT. One in 3 patients shows signs of significant mental illness and could benefit from some type of psychological or psychopharmacological support, or even psychiatric treatment in the worst cases. We propose that the anesthetist learn to use these simple instruments for psychopathological evaluation in order to detect problems.

Two different egg based media, with and without the incorporation of sodium pyruvate, were used to isolate M. paratuberculosis from sheep, goat and cattle samples obtained at our laboratory for two years. Both media were adequate for bovine material, with a slightly improved isolation rate for Herrold's egg yolk medium incorporating sodium pyruvate; however, most of the small ruminant strains grew only on Löwenstein-Jensen medium without sodium pyruvate. Those results point out the need to use different media when working with small ruminant samples and provide further evidence for the existence of different varieties of M. paratuberculosis causing paratuberculosis in cattle and in small ruminants.

The presence of H.L.A. antigens in bipolar affective patients attending in the University Hospital of Zaragoza was studied and contrasted with findings in the general population. A random sample of 36 patients was selected for the study. All of them fulfill, both, DSM-III and RDC diagnostic criteria . The HLA antigen was studied by means of Lymphotoxicity Test of N.I.H. standard technique. Both, A29 and B21 HLA antigens were detect in the bipolar patients more frequently that in the controls (Histocompatibility Testing data, 1980), and the differences were statistically significant. It is also suggested that the A2 HLA antigen is more frequently found in bipolar patients "non-respondent" to lithium treatment. The inclination to relate these antigens to specifics genes in the bipolar illness should be pondered, since the risk of "false positives" inherent in studies testing association hypothesis is well known.

A goat herd severely affected by arthritis was studied. The most representative clinical signs consisted of articular swelling, mainly of the carpal joints, and the subsequent locomotor disorders. Some goats also showed signs of central nervous system involvement. Examinations of joint fluid revealed an increased number of mononuclear blood cells, mostly lymphocytes. Gross and microscopic articular lesions were of inflammatory and degenerative types. Periarticular connective tissue, synovial bursae, tendons and tendon sheaths were predominantly affected. Inflammatory lesions were those of a chronic hyperplastic tenosynovitis with fibrosis of the connective tissue components. Degenerative changes consisted mainly of necrosis and mineralisation of articular-related structures. Histological lesions in the central nervous system were those of a nonpurulent encephalitis initially located in periventricular areas, but in one case extensive encephalomalacia was also seen. Of the 80 animals sampled 82.5 per cent showed seropositive reactions against an ovine progressive pneumonia virus antigen. None was seropositive to brucella and titres to chlamydia were low. Attempts to isolate chlamydia and mycoplasma from affected joints and several organs failed. Different bacteria were recovered from a few samples but did not seem significant. Syncytium-forming viral particles were isolated from several organs, mainly the lungs, synovial membranes and lymphoid tissue of almost all the slaughtered animals. These particles were identified as lentiviruses by electron microscopy. The clinical signs, lesions serological results and microbiological findings, led to a diagnosis of caprine arthritis-encephalitis. This syndrome has not been recognised in Spain previously.
