A pilot study was carried out to evaluate the transfer of As, Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr and Hg from milk to dairy products and to correlate their behavior with that of some components and macro-elements of milk. Due to the low level of these chemical elements in most common commercial products, hard cheese was produced starting from cow’s milk spiked with the analytes of interest. Several intermediate and final products coming from cheese making were sampled and analysed for content of fat, dry matter, proteins, macro and oligo-elements. The relationship between spiked elements and milk components was evaluated through both the study of concentration factors and the statistical analysis (Principal Component Analysis and correlation matrix). Except for As and Hg, a clear correlation between spiked elements and milk components was found so a likely bond with proteins, fat and dry matter was demonstrated. As for Pb, for which a legal limit (Maximum Level, ML) is set in the pertinent European regulations, it was found that the link with proteins could lead to an increase of this element concentration different from the mere concentration factor from milk to cheese. Furthermore, it was proven that the stage of ripening affected the variation of Pb concentration so this aspect should be deeply considered in case of setting a ML in cheese or extrapolating a ML from milk to cheese.

Quality and reliability of analytical results are, in general, key issues for all laboratories but become a top priority for laboratories accredited according to ISO/IEC 17025:2005. In this international standard the proficiency testing (PT) is regarded as a means to assure the validity of results. Nowadays, the proved competence of laboratories is an essential requirement especially for that structures that are involved in the official controls aimed at ensuring the safety of EU food products and the public health. To guarantee the EU consumers, the Council and the Commission have designated 28 European Union Reference Laboratories (EURLs) for food and feed, whose main role is to contribute to the standardization of analytical methods and to the harmonization of performance among the EU National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) to reach a comparable level of quality in the analytical data among all Member States. With this aim, the organization of PTs is a task that each EURL has to accomplish. Over the last 15 years, the EURL for chemical elements in food of animal origin (EURL-CEFAO) have organized 32 PTs on determination of total As, Cd, Pb and total Hg in meat, milk, fish and offal for the benefit of its network of NRLs. Some specific aspects of this activity will be discussed (e.g. preparation and characterization of PT materials, statistical evaluation of data, follow-up actions). Finally, based on the EURL-CEFAO experience, it will be demonstrated that the participation into PTs on a regular basis can result in an improvement of the laboratory’s performance as well as in the harmonization of the results submitted by participants.

We carried out a prospective observational study to evaluate whether Monocyte Distribution Width (MDW) may play a role in identifying patients with sepsis in comparison with Procalcitonin (PCT). We prospectively enrolled all consecutive patients hospitalized at the Infectious Diseases Unit of Pescara General Hospital for bacterial infection or sepsis. MDW values were collected for all patients. Clinical characteristics, demographic data, past and present medical history, microbiological results, PCT, as well as neutrophil and monocytes indices at entry were compared in the 2 groups. Two-hundred-sixty patients were enrolled, 63.5% males, aged 59.1±19.5 years. Sepsis was diagnosed in 105 (40.4%); in 60 (57.1%) at least 1 microorganism was isolated from blood cultures. Since the social-democrats dismissed the communist utopia and privileged instead the idea of a well-being founded on the production-consumption cycle, the Western electoral competition has been increasingly focused on the capitalist economy. Accordingly, the political dynamics shifted from the class conflict to the regulation of markets. On the social side, the removal of the previous conflict has freed the "spirit of capitalism" that has been able to settle even more pervasively in the symbolic relations between people. This new philosophy of money triggers a social game played on competition and the reward mechanism derived from it. In this sense, meritocracy is the criterion for governing this new order of capitalism. Within this context, this article discusses the contribution of the left movements and parties, in their historical-social evolution, to the construction of a meritocratic principle in Europe. It also investigates the political process that led the left to a strategic choice, among the other possible options for renewal: namely, to give up to the struggle against capitalism and privilege a progressive accommodative logic with regard to the market. We argue that this choice was based both on values and interests shared by political actors and was supported at a theoretical level by a group of intellectuals who recognize themselves in the Third Way. Based on the above, the article shall identify the main stages in this political change, by using an appropriate selection of discourses and texts that refer to Third Way, analyzing them through a sociological perspective.

Offal includes viscera and internal organs that have been removed from butchered animals, that may be either directly eaten or processed for the production of other foodstuff. Such organs are able to accumulate high concentrations of potentially toxic heavy metals posing a risk for human health when ingested. Because high levels of Cd and Pb may produce damages to humans, Commission Regulation no. 1881/2006 and its amendment established maximum levels for those two elements in edible bovine, porcine, and ovine offal. In the present study, a method based on microwave acid-assisted digestion and quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric quantification of Cd and Pb in offal was validated according to the EU common standards. The main parameters evaluated in the validation process were: the detection and the quantification limits (LoD, LoQ), the recovery, the repeatability, the within-laboratory reproducibility, the linearity range, and the standard measurement uncertainty. The results obtained for LoD and LoQ in microg kg(-1) were, respectively, Cd, 1.8 and 5.4; Pb, 5.1 and 15.5; meanwhile, the mean recovery was about 98% for Cd and 103% for Pb. Repeatability was around 5% for Cd and 4% for Pb. The expanded standard measurement uncertainty, expressed as percentage and with a coverage factor of 2, was estimated as follows: Cd, 4.9%; Pb, 8.7%. For both elements, the main contribution was due to the within-laboratory reproducibility of the measurements.

This paper reports a case of late vitreomacular traction in a young patient secondary to toxoplasma retinochoroiditis resolved by vitrectomy. A 17-year-old female with chronic inflammatory bowel disease developed severe vitreomacular traction 8 months after resolution of ocular toxoplasmosis with medical therapy. Best-corrected visual acuity, full ophthalmic slit-lamp examination, colour fundus photography, spectral domain optical coherence tomography, and fluorescein angiography were performed. The patient underwent vitrectomy with removal of the clinically evident posterior hyaloid. Vitrectomy was rapidly successful in resolving the vitreomacular traction, with full recovery in best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20. Vitreoretinal traction in patients with previous toxoplasma retinochoroiditis may appear several months after resolution of the inflammatory condition. We suggest observing carefully for possible development of late vitreoretinal traction during follow-up of such patients.

One of the emerging issues regarding the analysis of inorganic contaminants in food is the determination of Cadmium (Cd) and Lead (Pb) in honey. In fact, this kind of analysis is foreseen in most of the National Residue Control Plans (NRCPs) that European Union Member States (EU MSs) have to perform according to Directive 96/23.With the aim to provide technical support to the EU National Reference Laboratories (NRLs), an easy-to-use method on direct determination (DD) of Cd and Pb in honey by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS) after dissolution in an aqueous mixture of 2.5 % HNO3 (v/v) and 12.5 % H2O2 (v/v) was in-house validated and distributed to the NRLs network. Analyses were carried out on a batch prepared for the feasibility study of the EURL-CEFAO 19th PT on honey. The validation levels (20 and 100 µg/kg for Cd and Pb, respectively) were chosen similar to those that would have been proposed for the PT.The method proved its efficacy in terms of analytical performance; it appears to be low cost and time saving compared to a microwave sample preparation. In addition, it also decreases the environmental impact, being the amount of acid and reagents considerably reduced.

The aetiology of Parkinson's disease (PD) is still unknown, but some hypotheses have focused on the imbalances in body levels of metals as co-factors of risk. To assess whether hair could be a reliable marker of possible changes, calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), silicon (Si) and zinc (Zn) were determined in hair from 81 patients affected by PD and 17 age-matched controls. Care was taken to eliminate external contamination of the hair by thorough washing. Digestion of the matrix was achieved by an acid-assisted microwave procedure. Quantification of the elements was performed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Results indicated significantly lower levels of Fe in the hair of patients (p=0.018) compared with controls. Ca and Mg levels were slightly lower while Zn levels were higher in patients, although these differences were not significant; neither were variations in Cu and Si. Ca and Mg were at least 1.5 times higher in females than in males in both controls and patients.
