The A-V formulation based iterative algorithm method (IAM), developed at Paul Scherrer Institute, shows excellent performance in modeling the critical state magnetization-current in the ReBCO tape stacks after field-cooling magnetization. This article upgrades the function of the IAM, making it realistic to take into account the widely used E – J power law, as well as to model the magnetization-current in bulk high-temperature superconductors under a zero-field-cooling cycle, having both the magnetization and demagnetization stages. The simulation results obtained from the ANSYS-IAM are validated with the well-known H -formulation method for both the critical state model and the flux creep model. The computation times from using the two different numerical methods are compared and discussed. The influence factors, including the iteration steps, the initial superconductor resistivity, the ramping time, and the reservation coefficient, are studied in detail.

A 10 mm-period, high-temperature superconducting (HTS) undulator consisting of 20 staggered-array GdBa2Cu3O7−x (GdBCO) bulk superconductors has been fabricated and tested successfully. Each GdBCO disk was machined into a half-moon shape with micro-meter accuracy and shrink-fitted into a slotted oxygen-free copper disk which provided pre-stress and effective conduction-cooling. The HTS undulator prototype, consisting of GdBCO disks, copper disks, and CoFe poles fitted in a long copper shell, was field-cooled magnetized in fields of up to 10 T at 10 K. An undulator field of 2.1 T in a 4 mm magnetic gap was obtained. This field is the largest reported yet for the same gap and period length and exceeds the target value of 2 T for the meter-long HTS undulator scheduled for the hard x-ray I-TOMCAT beamline in the Swiss Light Source 2.0. We present the first lasing results of SwissFEL, a hard X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) that recently came into operation at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. SwissFEL is a very stable, compact and cost-effective X-ray FEL facility driven by a low-energy and ultra-low-emittance electron beam travelling through short-period undulators. It delivers stable hard X-ray FEL radiation at 1-A wavelength with pulse energies of more than 500 μJ, pulse durations of ~30 fs (root mean square) and spectral bandwidth below the per-mil level. Using special configurations, we have produced pulses shorter than 1 fs and, in a different set-up, broadband radiation with an unprecedented bandwidth of ~2%. The extremely small emittance demonstrated at SwissFEL paves the way for even more compact and affordable hard X-ray FELs, potentially boosting the number of facilities worldwide and thereby expanding the population of the scientific community that has access to X-ray FEL radiation. The first lasing results at SwissFEL, an X-ray free-electron laser, are presented, highlighting the facility’s unique capabilities. A general comparison to other major facilities is also provided.

Short period undulators are an essential component of a compact free electron laser (FEL) and medium energy storage rings for the production of hard X-rays. The use of ReBCO high temperature superconductors (HTS) in a staggered array undulator geometry is expected to yield a magnetic undulator flux density above 2 T for a 10 mm period and a 4 mm magnetic gap, thus substantially increasing the lasing performance of existing FEL and storage ring facilities. The optimization of the design for a staggered array undulator with FEM simulations and a critical analysis of its working principles are discussed in this paper. Specifically, the maximization of the undulator field and the minimization of the required HTS material are the two main objectives of this study, which is performed with realistic material parameters of commercially available bulks materials. Finally, the outcome of the applied optimization technique is discussed and the intrinsic limits of this undulator geometry are highlighted..

Intra-articular loose bodies can be a non-obvious cause of chronic joint pain. Patients often undergo many conventional treatments, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), physiotherapy, TECAR-therapy, laser-therapy or infiltration therapy, often achieving little or no benefits. In our experience, in such cases, when an intra-articular or intrabursal loose body is detected, it is likely to be the actual source of pain. The aim of our study is to propose a new US-guided technique to remove intra-articular loose bodies, which is mini-invasive, costeffective and can be used to eliminate the source of pain with little or no discomfort for the patient.

Objectives To provide quantitative anatomical parameters in patients with and without non-traumatic multidirectional instability using MR arthrography (MR-a). Materials and methods One hundred and seventy-six MR-a performed from January 2020 to March 2021 were retrospectively evaluated. Patients were divided according to the presence of clinically diagnosed multidirectional shoulder instability (MDI). Each MR-a was performed immediately after intra-articular injection of 20 ml of gadolinium using the anterior approach. The width of the axillary recess, the width of the rotator interval, and the circumference of the glenoid were measured by three independent radiologists, choosing the average value of the measurements. The difference between the mean values of each of the three parameters between the two study groups was then assessed. Results Thirty-seven patients were included in the study (20 in the MDI group, 17 in the control group). The mean axillary recess width in the MDI group was significantly greater than in the control group (t(33) = 3.15, p = .003); rotator interval width and glenoid circumference measurements were not significantly different (t(35) = 1.75, p = .08 and t(30) = 0,51, p = .6, respectively). Conclusions Inferior capsular redundancy may be an important predisposing factor in MDI, while glenoid circumference is not related to MDI. The relationship between the width of the rotator interval and shoulder instability remains debated.

Purpose The aim of the study is to evaluate which MRI parameters achieve the best degree of inter-individual concordance in the description of meniscal fibrocartilage, regarding its morphology, signal and position. Materials and methods Eighty-nine knee MRIs were included in the study, retrospectively re-evaluated by three radiologists who completed a binary report (normal/abnormal) describing the meniscus signal, position relative to the tibial plateau margin and morphology. The inter-individual concordance value was calculated using Cohen's test. Results We obtained different inter-individual concordance values according to the parameters considered. The concordance was poor in the description of the meniscal position relative to the tibial plateau margin (average k = 0.6); the result was comparable in the description of the meniscal morphology (average k = 0.56). The best results were obtained with the meniscal signal analysis (average k = 0.8). Conclusion To the best of our knowledge, there are no studies in the literature assessing the concordance between multiple readers in the description of the parameters we studied. The results we obtained suggest that the most reliable parameter for describing meniscal fibrocartilage is its signal intensity, whereas morphology and position may lead to different interpretations that are not always unequivocal.

Superconducting undulators (SCUs) with a period >15 mm can offer a much higher on-axis undulator field B 0 than state-of-the-art cryogenic permanent magnet undulators with the same period and vacuum gap. The commissioned NbTi planar SCUs for user operation in the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology synchrotron and the advanced photon source storage ring are operated stably without quenches, producing outperformed photon flux in the high energy part of the hard x-ray spectrum. Another potential advantage of deploying SCU is its radiation hardness, a crucial characteristic for being used in free electron lasers (FELs) driven by high repetition rate superconducting linear accelerators (LINACs) and diffraction limited storage rings (DLSRs) with small vacuum gap and large averaged beam current. The development of shorter period but high field SCU is an important mission in an EU founded CompactLight project as this technology would reduce both the length of undulators and the length of LINACs. This review paper first overviews the research and development of SCUs worldwide from the late 1970s to 2021, then presents the SCU design requirements and compares the theory limits of different types of planar and helical SCUs, and finally reviews the technical challenges including the SCU cryostat, the magnetic field measurement, the integral/local field correction and the high-temperature superconductor (HTS) challenges and prospects the research needs for SCUs.

Background and aim: The purpose of the study was to compare the data obtained by two independent observers and statistically analyse the results using Cohen’s K to highlight the concordance or discordance in the diagnosis of normality, pathology and, in particular, the type of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) on plain films. Methods: the study was conducted retrospectively. The only inclusion criterium was the minimum age of 20 years. All patients underwent a radiographic examination of the pelvis in standard anteroposterior projection in orthostasis. Results: A hundred patients were evaluated. A good concordance between the two operators in the examination of normal hip joint (k= 0.68 right/ 0,74 left) was found; a similar grade of agreement was found for the analysis of “pincer” type FAI (k = 0.73 right, 0,67 left). The best results in concordance were achieved in the examination of “cam” type FAI (k= 0.82 right, 0,88 left), “mixed” type FAI (k = 0.85 right, 0,86 left), and in findings of “coxa profunda” (k = 0.92 right, 0,88 left). Conclusion: We found a good concordance between the two readers; a few cases of disagreement were found in the diagnosis of “pincer” type FAI and absence of disease. This discrepancy may be due to the different weight given by the single observer to the clinical indication that leads the patient to examination, but also by the difficulty of a not dedicated radiologist to show some subtle signs indicative of early FAI.

Purpose To study distractive muscle injuries applying US and MRI specific classifications and to find if any correlation exists between the results and the return to sport (RTS) time. The second purpose is to evaluate which classification has the best prognostic value and if the lesions extension correlates with the RTS time. Methods A total of 26 male, professional soccer players (age 21.3 ± 5.6), diagnosed with traumatic muscle injury of the lower limbs, received ultrasound and MRI evaluation within 2 days from the trauma. Concordance between US and MRI findings was investigated. The relationships between MRI and US based injury grading scales and RTS time were evaluated. Correlation between injuries’ longitudinal extension and RTS time was also investigated. Results The correlation between US and MRI measurements returned a Spearman value of rs = 0.61 (p = .001). Peetrons and Mueller-Wohlfahrt grading scales correlations with RTS time were r = 0.43 (p = .02) and r = 0.83 (p = r = 0.63 (p rs = 0.2 and rs = 0.25. Conclusions Both US and MRI can be used as prognostic indicators along with the Peetrons (US) and the Mueller-Wohlfahrt (MRI) classifications. MRI is more precise and generates more reproducible results. The lesion craniocaudal extension must be considered as a prognostic indicator, while the injury location inside the muscle or along its major axis has doubtful significance.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the long-term evolution of matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation (MACI) with magnetic resonance (MR) arthrography and verify the correlation between radiological and clinical findings.Materials and methodsTwenty-six patients (20 m/6f) were diagnosed with knee chondral injuries and treated with MACI implantation. Each patient received MR arthrography and clinical examination at mid-term (range 22–36 months) and long term (range 96–194 months) after surgery. MR arthrography was performed with dedicated coil and a 1.5-Tesla MR unit. The modified MOCART scale was used to evaluate the status of chondral implants. Implant coating, integration to the border zone, and the surface and structure of the repaired tissue were evaluated. Presence of bone marrow oedema was evaluated. The Cincinnati Knee Rating System (CKRS) was used for clinical assessment.ResultsAt long term, 4/26 patients had complete alignment; 5/26 had a complete integration of the margins; in 4/26 cases, the implant surface was undamaged; in 14/26 cases, the reparative tissue was homogeneous. In 9/26 cases, the implant showed isointense signal compared to articular cartilage, while the presence of subchondral bone oedema was documented in 19/26 cases. The average radiological score decreased from 59.2 (mid-term) to 38.6 (long term). The average clinical score decreased from 8.9 to 8.3.ConclusionsDecrease in clinical results was not significant (0.6 pointsp = .06), but mMOCART scores decreased significantly (p = .00003). Although imaging studies showed deterioration of the grafts, the patients did not have significant clinical deterioration (231/250).

A backward computation method has been developed to accelerate modelling of the critical state magnetization current in a staggered-array bulk high-temperature superconducting (HTS) undulator. The key concept is as follows: i) a large magnetization current is first generated on the surface of the HTS bulks after rapid field-cooling (FC) magnetization; ii) the magnetization current then relaxes inwards step-by-step obeying the critical state model; iii) after tens of backward iterations the magnetization current reaches a steady state. The simulation results show excellent agreement with the H-formulation method for both the electromagnetic and electromagnetic-mechanical coupled analyses, but with significantly faster computation speed. Solving the FEA model with 1.8 million degrees of freedom (DOFs), the backward computation method takes less than 1.4 hours, an order of magnitude or higher faster than other state-of-the-art numerical methods. Finally, the models are used to investigate the influence of the mechanical stress on the distribution of the critical state magnetization current and the undulator field along the central axis., 12 pages, 7 figures

The Accelerator on a Chip International Program (ACHIP) is an international collaboration, funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, with the goal of demonstrating that laser-driven accelerator can be integrated on a chip to fully build an accelerator based on dielectric structures. PSI will provide access to the high brightness electron beam of SwissFEL to test structures, approaches and methods towards achieving the final goal of the project. In this contribution, we will describe the two interaction chambers installed on SwissFEL to perform the proof-of-principle experiments. In particular, we will present the positioning system for the samples, the magnets needed to focus the beam to sub-micrometer dimensions and the diagnostics to measure beam properties at the interaction point.

We demonstrate the operation of a compact x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) using the optical klystron mechanism. This effect speeds up the FEL process using the dispersion of magnetic chicanes placed between the undulator modules of the FEL beamline. The demonstration was performed at the soft x-ray beamline of SwissFEL, called Athos, which is, as far as we are aware, the only x-ray FEL to date with magnetic chicanes between every two undulator modules. In our measurements, we show that, compared to standard operation without chicanes, the required undulator length to achieve FEL saturation is reduced between 15% and 30% for radiation wavelengths between 1 and 2 nm. Fully exploiting the optical klystron effect represents an important step toward more compact FEL designs, rendering this key technology more affordable and hence accessible to a larger science community.

The development of a new hard x-ray beamline I-TOMCAT equipped with a 1-meter-long short-period bulk high-temperature superconductor undulator (BHTSU) has been scheduled for the upgrade of the Swiss Light Source (SLS 2.0) at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). The very hard x-ray source generated by the BHTSU will increase the brilliance at the beamline by over one order of magnitude in comparison to other state-of-the-art undulator technologies and allow experiments to be carried out with photon energies in excess of 60 keV. One of the key challenges for designing a 1-meter-long (100 periods) BHTSU is the large-scale simulation of the magnetization currents inside 200 staggered-array bulk superconductors. A feasible approach to simplify the electromagnetic model is to retain five periods from both ends of the 1-meter-long BHTSU, reducing the number of degrees of freedom (DOFs) to the scale of millions. In this paper, the theory of the recently-proposed 2D A-V formulation-based backward computation method is extended to calculate the critical state magnetization currents in the ten-period staggered-array BHTSU in 3D. The simulation results of the magnetization currents and the associated undulator field along the electron beam axis are compared with the well-known 3D H-formulation and the highly efficient 3D H-{\phi} formulation method, all methods showing excellent agreement with each other as well as with experimental results. The mixed H-{\phi} formulation avoids computing the eddy currents in the air subdomain and is significantly faster than the full H-formulation method, but is slower in comparison to the A-V formulation-based backward computation. The Accelerator on a Chip International Program (ACHIP), funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for a 5 year period, pursues basic research and development for a super-compact accelerator on a chip, where the accelerating structure is a dielectric microstructure excited by femtosecond laser pulses. The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) will contribute to this by providing the international collaboration access to the high-brightness electron beams in SwissFEL, where we plan to do a proof-of-principle demonstration of the acceleration of a highly relativistic beam. In this contribution we present the conceptual layout of the experiment, in which we will focus the beam down to sub-micrometer beam sizes. Start-to-end simulation results of the tracked electron beam, and first calculations of the accelerating field of the microstructure will be shown.

This theory demonstrates the existence of a variable transverse K gradient in Apple-type undulators. It is supported by numerical simulations to assess the limits of this analytical approach., Apple-type undulators are globally recognized as the most flexible devices for the production of variable polarized light in the soft X-ray regime, both at synchrotron and free-electron laser facilities. Recently, the implementation of transverse gradient undulators has been proposed to enhance the performance of new generation light sources. In this paper it is demonstrated that Apple undulators do not only generate linear and elliptical polarized light but also variable transverse gradient under certain conditions. A general theoretical framework is introduced to evaluate the K-value and its transverse gradient for an Apple undulator, and formulas for all regular operational modes and different Apple types (including the most recent Delta type and Apple X) are calculated and critically discussed.

In the framework of the SwissFEL project at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), a Hall probe bench is being developed for the high-precision magnetic characterization of the insertion devices for the ATHOS soft X-ray beamline. For this purpose, a novel three-axis teslameter has been developed, which will be placed between the undulator and its outer shell in a very limited volumetric space of 150 x 50 x 45 mm. Together with a Hall probe at the center of the cross sectional area of the undulator, the setup will traverse along the undulator length on a specifically designed rig with minimal vibrations. This teslameter has all the analog signal conditioning circuitry for the Hall probe and also has on board 24-bit digitization. The instrument also handles an interface to a linear absolute encoder. The old instrumentation used only had analog signal conditioning circuitry whilst digitization was done off board. The new instrument also provides a very accurate magnetic field map in the &micro, T range with simultaneous readings from the position encoder at an accuracy of &plusmn, 3 &micro, m. In this paper, a series of tests are described, which were performed at PSI in order to establish the measuring precision and repeatability of the instrument.

Magnetic measurement benches are used to measure the magnetic field profile of insertion devices such as undulators. A critical feature of these benches is the traversal of a measurement head such as a Hall probe through the undulator whilst keeping it perfectly centered, ensuring that the measurement obtained is not distorted by physical displacements of the probe during measurement. This paper presents a detailed novel design for a new magnetic measurement bench based on the SAFALI Hall probe positioning system, which facilitates the measurement as well as magnetic optimisation of the magnetic field from inside of a vacuum chamber. The paper gives a brief introduction to in-vacuum undulators and describes the new developments in the magnetic measurement bench. The design of the electronics involved in the bench is then explained, including the wireless communication systems used to operate the bench. The reproducibility of magnetic field measurements as well as the precision of the hall probe positioning are also discussed and presented.

A novel three-axis teslameter and other similar machines have been designed and developed for SwissFEL at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). The developed instrument will be used for high fidelity characterisation and optimisation of the undulators for the ATHOS soft X-ray beamline. The teslameter incorporates analogue signal conditioning for the three-axes interface to a SENIS Hall probe, an interface to a Heidenhain linear absolute encoder and an on-board high-resolution 24-bit analogue-to-digital conversion. This is in contrast to the old instrumentation setup used, which only comprises the analogue circuitry with digitization being done externally to the instrument. The new instrument fits in a volumetric space of 150 mm &times, 50 mm &times, 45 mm, being very compact in size and also compatible with the in-vacuum undulators. This paper describes the design and the development of the different components of the teslameter. Performance results are presented that demonstrate offset fluctuation and drift (0.1&ndash, 10 Hz) with a standard deviation of 0.78 &micro, T and a broadband noise (10&ndash, 500 Hz) of 2.05 &micro, T with an acquisition frequency of 2 kHz.

The use of dielectrics increases the breakdown field limit, and thus the achievable gradient, by a factor of at least 10 in comparison to metals. Experimental demonstrations of DLA in 2013 led to the Accelerator on a Chip International Program (ACHIP), funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. In ACHIP, our main goal is to build an accelerator on a silicon chip, which can accelerate electrons from below 100 keV to above 1 MeV with a gradient of at least 100 MeV/m. For stable acceleration on the chip, magnet-only focusing techniques are insufficient to compensate the strong acceleration defocusing. Thus, spatial harmonic and Alternating Phase Focusing (APF) laser-based focusing techniques have been developed. We have also developed the simplified symplectic tracking code DLAtrack6D, which makes use of the periodicity and applies only one kick per DLA cell, which is calculated by the Fourier coefficient of the synchronous spatial harmonic. Due to coupling, the Fourier coefficients of neighboring cells are not entirely independent and a field flatness optimization (similarly as in multi-cell cavities) needs to be performed. The simulation of the entire accelerator on a chip by a Particle In Cell (PIC) code is possible, but impractical for optimization purposes. Finally, we have also outlined the treatment of wake field effects in attosecond bunches in the grating within DLAtrack6D, where the wake function is computed by an external solver., Published by World Scientific Publ., Singapur

The new APPLE X undulators are novel elliptically-polarised undulators, which have a highly symmetric geometry. Theoretically, all the elliptical polarisation states are expected to have the same deflection parameter if the magnetic and geometrical errors are negligible. Nonetheless, the magnetic measurements of the first ten APPLE X undulators performed at Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) contradicted this simple statement and numerical simulations were required to understand and validate the results. After the valuation of the magnetic-force induced mechanical deformations of the undulator frame, the central role played by the magnetic susceptibility χ was investigated. The simulation results indicate that the impact of different magnet types in the Halbach array, the anisotropic properties, and the choice of shaped field radial magnets are critical for the achieved magnetic field. The numerical results are compared with the measurement data.

A novel, flexible yet simple method to generate gigawatt X-ray free-electron-laser radiation with unprecedented spectral bandwidth above the 10% level is presented. Such broadband radiation will improve substantially the efficiency of techniques like X-ray crystallography and spectroscopy, paving the way for outstanding progress in fields like biology and material science., A new and simple method to generate X-ray free-electron-laser radiation with unprecedented spectral bandwidth above the 10% level is presented. The broad bandwidth is achieved by sending a transversely tilted beam through a transverse-gradient undulator. The extent of the bandwidth can easily be controlled by variation of the beam tilt or the undulator gradient. Numerical simulations confirm the validity and feasibility of this method.

Proton therapy is a rapidly developing technique in cancer treatment since the radiation dose delivered to the target volume is maximized and the dose to surrounding healthy tissue is minimized. The 3-D scanning-irradiation method is performed by means of fast sweeper magnets for transverse scanning, and the scanning in depth of the tumor is performed by fast energy changes in steps of 1% in less than 100 ms. Therefore, high magnetic field ramping speed is necessary. To aim the scanning beam from all directions to the tumor in the patient, the last part of the beam transport and scanning system are mounted on a rotatable gantry. The last bending magnet in the gantry is a major component that drives the weight, footprint, and costs of the whole machine. Superconducting magnets have the potential to reduce the facility weight and costs, maintaining at the same time a large scanning field size. The preliminary magnetic design of the superconducting dipole for a proton therapy gantry is presented in this paper. The design consists in four Nb 3Sn racetrack coils and considers the requirement of large aperture for the transverse scanning and low field at the patient location using an active shielding system.

We have installed an interaction chamber in the electron beam line of SwissFEL. Electrons with a particle energy of 3 GeV are focused to a few-micrometer beam size. Samples placed in this beam can be aligned to the electron beam with a hexapod. The goal of this installation is to demonstrate laser-driven acceleration inside dielectric structures. We present here the layout of this interaction chamber as well as first measurements with the electron beam.
