A classical nova is an eruption on the surface of a white dwarf in an accreting binary system. The material ejected from the white dwarf surface generally forms an axisymmetric shell. The shaping mechanisms of nova shells are probes of the processes that take place at energy scales between planetary nebulae and supernova remnants. We report on the discovery of nova shells surrounding the post-nova systems V4362 Sagittarii (1994) and more limited observations of DO Aquilae (1925). Distance measurements of 0.5p/m1.4 kpc for V4362 Sgr and 6.7 p/m 3.5 kpc -0.2 for DO Aql are found based on the expansion parallax method. The growth rates are measured to be 0.07``/year for DO Aql and 0.32``/year for V4362 Sgr. A preliminary investigation into the ionisation structure of the nova shell associated with V4362 Sgr is presented. The observed ionisation structure of nova shells depends strongly on their morphology and the orientation of the central component towards the observer. Ultra-cool white dwarfs are among the oldest stellar remnants in the Universe. Their efficient gravitational settling and low effective temperatures are responsible for the smooth spectra they exhibit. For that reason, it is not possible to derive their radial velocities or to find the chemistry of the progenitors. The best that can be done is to infer such properties from associated sources, which are coeval. The simplest form of such a system is a common proper motion pair where one star is an evolved degenerate and the other a main-sequence star. In this work, we present the discovery of the first of such a system, the M dwarf LHS 6328 and the ultra-cool white dwarf PSO J1801+625, from the Pan-STARRS 1 3$��$ survey and the $Gaia$ Data Release 2. Follow-up spectra were collected covering a usable wavelength range of 3750-24500 ��. Their spectra show that the white dwarf has an effective temperature of 3550K and surface gravity of $\log g = 7.45 \pm 0.13$ or $\log g = 7.49 \pm 0.13$ for a CO or He core, respectively, when compared against synthetic spectra of ultra-cool white dwarf atmosphere models. The system has slightly subsolar metallicity with -0.25 < [Fe/H] < 0.0, and a spatial velocity of (U, V, W) = ($-114.26 \pm 0.24$, $222.94 \pm 0.60$, $10.25 \pm 0.34$) km s $^{-1}$ the first radial velocity and metallicity measurements of an ultra-cool white dwarf. Blue Large-Amplitude Pulsators (BLAPs) are a new class of pulsating variable star. They are located close to the hot subdwarf branch in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and have spectral classes of late O or early B. Stellar evolution models indicate that these stars are likely radially pulsating, driven by iron group opacity in their interiors. A number of variable stars with a similar driving mechanism exist near the hot subdwarf branch with multi-periodic oscillations caused by either pressure (p) or gravity (g) modes. No multi-periodic signals were detected in the OGLE discovery light curves since it would be difficult to detect short period signals associated with higher-order p modes with the OGLE cadence. Using the RISE instrument on the Liverpool Telescope, we produced high cadence light curves of two BLAPs, OGLE-BLAP-009 ($m_{\mathrm{v}}=15.65$ mag) and OGLE-BLAP-014 ($m_{\mathrm{v}}=16.79$ mag) using a $720$ nm longpass filter. Frequency analysis of these light curves identify a primary oscillation with a period of $31.935\pm0.0098$ mins and an amplitude from a Fourier series fit of $0.236$ mag for BLAP-009. The analysis of BLAP-014 identifies a period of $33.625\pm0.0214$ mins and an amplitude of $0.225$ mag. Analysis of the residual light curves reveals no additional short period variability down to an amplitude of $15.20\pm0.26$ mmag for BLAP-009 and $58.60\pm3.44$ mmag for BLAP-014 for minimum periods of $20$ s and $60$ s respectively. We present time resolved low resolution spectra of BLAP-009 and BLAP-014 collected with SPRAT on the Liverpool Telescope. The spectra were median-stacked in four ranges of phase. It was intended to note the variation in the shape of the helium absorption lines as a function of phase, but they do not appear to vary with time in low resolution spectra. The lack of clear offsets in the absorption lines suggest that there can only be small radial velocity due to either unseen companion or rapid expansion/contraction of the envelope.

Weather monitoring has always been an element of observatory operations. For a robotic telescope there is the added complication that software needs to understand the ever changing atmospheric observing conditions in order to respond in real time, continuously balancing the schedule for both facility calibrations (i.e., standard stars) and targeted observations according to the TAC-assigned science priorities. For the Liverpool Telescope, in the past year we have been testing a new multi-threaded approach. We have long operated a single-element, integrated-all-sky, 10 m bolometer on site. To this we have added real-time photometric monitoring of field stars around the science target and analysis of publicly accessible weather satellite images. This gives us three estimates of any night's photometricity; two ground-based looking up through the cloud (optical and thermal IR) and one satellite-based looking down at the observatory. We present a comparison of the results from the different methods and share our experiences selecting between the complementary data sets to support real-time observing decisions.

The preferred programming languages and operating systems used in writing and running astrometric software have changed over time. The Python language is now well supported by the scientific community which provides open-source standard libraries for astronomical calculation including Astropy, 1 SciPy 2 and NumPy. 3 We surveyed available open source astrometric libraries and compare ICRS coordinate to observation transforms using recent releases of C source code and Python wrappers from the IAU Standard of Fundamental Astronomy 4 (SOFA), against those using the US Naval Observatory Vector Astrometry Software 5 (NOVAS). The selection of an underlying operating system with long term support is also an important aspect of maintaining a working telescope control system. The installation and operation of the libraries under both Linux Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) and Windows 10 are explored.

We analyze four extreme active galactic nuclei (AGN) transients to explore the possibility that they are caused by rare, high-amplitude microlensing events. These previously unknown type-I AGN are located in the redshift range 0.6-1.1 and show changes of > 1.5 mag in the g-band on a time-scale of ~years. Multi-epoch optical spectroscopy, from the William Herschel Telescope, shows clear differential variability in the broad line fluxes with respect to the continuum changes and also evolution in the line profiles. In two cases, a simple point-source, point-lens microlensing model provides an excellent match to the long-term variability seen in these objects. For both models, the parameter constraints are consistent with the microlensing being due to an intervening stellar mass object but as yet there is no confirmation of the presence of an intervening galaxy. The models predict a peak amplification of 10.3/13.5 and an Einstein time-scale of 7.5/10.8 yr, respectively. In one case, the data also allow constraints on the size of the CIII] emitting region, with some simplifying assumptions, to to be ~1.0-6.5 light-days and a lower limit on the size of the MgII emitting region to be > 9 light-days (half-light radii). This CIII] radius is perhaps surprisingly small. In the remaining two objects, there is spectroscopic evidence for an intervening absorber but the extra structure seen in the light curves requires a more complex lensing scenario to adequately explain., 23 pages, 17 figures; matches version published in MNRAS

The survey volume of a proper motion-limited sample is typically much smaller than a magnitude-limited sample. This is because of the noisy astrometric measurements from detectors that are not dedicated for astrometric missions. In order to apply an empirical completeness correction, existing works limit the survey depth to the shallower parts of the sky that hamper the maximum potential of a survey. The number of epoch of measurement is a discrete quantity that cannot be interpolated across the projected plane of observation, so that the survey properties change in discrete steps across the sky. This work proposes a method to dissect the survey into small parts with Voronoi tessellation using candidate objects as generating points, such that each part defines a `mini-survey' that has its own properties. Coupling with a maximum volume density estimator, the new method is demonstrated to be unbiased and recovered {\sim}20% more objects than the existing method in a mock catalogue of a white dwarf-only solar neighbourhood with Pan--STARRS 1-like characteristics. The traditional Schmidt density estimator has been proven to be unbiased and effective in a magnitude-limited sample. Previously, efforts have been made to generalize it for populations with non-uniform density and proper motion-limited cases. This work shows that the then-good assumptions for a proper motion-limited sample are no longer sufficient to cope with modern data. Populations with larger differences in the kinematics as compared to the local standard of rest are most severely affected. We show that this systematic bias can be removed by treating the discovery fraction inseparable from the generalized maximum volume integrand. The treatment can be applied to any proper motion-limited sample with good knowledge of the kinematics. This work demonstrates the method through application to a mock catalogue of a white dwarf-only solar neighbourhood for various scenarios and compared against the traditional treatment using a survey with Pan-STARRS-like characteristics., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables. v2: typo correction.
