1. Dietary combination of linseed and hazelnut skin as a sustainable strategy to enrich lamb with health promoting fatty acids

Abstract: Abstract This study investigated the effect of the inclusion of extruded linseed and hazelnut skin on fatty acid (FA) metabolism in finishing lambs. Forty lambs were divided into 4 groups and fed for 60 d with: a conventional cereal-based diet, or the same diet with 8% of extruded linseed, or 15% of hazelnut skin, or 4% of linseed plus 7.5% of hazelnut skin as partial replacement of maize. Dietary treatments did not affect growth performances, carcass traits, and ruminal fermentation. The combined effect of linseed and hazelnut skin enriched the intramuscular fat with health promoting FA. Particularly, increases in α-linolenic acid (3.75-fold), and very long-chain n-3 poly-unsaturated FA (+ 40%) were attributed to the supplementation with linseed, rich in α-linolenic acid. In addition, increases in rumenic (+ 33%), and vaccenic (+ 59%) acids were attributed to hazelnut skin tannins modulating ruminal biohydrogenation and accumulating intermediate metabolites. The simultaneous inclusion of linseed and hazelnut skin can be a profitable strategy for enriching the intramuscular fat of lambs with health promoting FA, without adverse effects on ruminal fermentation and animal performance.

2. Effect of dietary magnolia bark extract supplementation in finishing pigs on the oxidative stability of meat

Abstract: Abstract Background Magnolia bark extract (MBE) is a natural supplement with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. Its properties suggest that the dietary supplementation in livestock could improve the quality of products. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate, for the first time, the effect of dietary MBE supplementation (0.33 mg/kg) in finishing pigs on the oxidative stability of meat. Oxidative stability is of paramount importance for pork, as it affects storage, retail, and consumer acceptance. For the purpose, the fatty acid profile, cholesterol, fat-soluble vitamins, antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase), non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity (TEAC, FRAP, and Folin-Ciocalteu assays), color stability, and lipid stability of pork were assessed. Results Concerning carcass characteristics, dietary MBE did not affect cold carcass yield, but reduced (P = 0.040) the chilling weight loss. The meat from pigs fed MBE had a lower (P = 0.031) lightness index than the control meat. No effect on intramuscular fat, cholesterol, and fatty acid profile was observed. Dietary MBE did not affect the content of vitamin E (α-tocopherol and γ-tocopherol) in pork, whereas it reduced (P = 0.021) the retinol content. The catalase activity was 18% higher (P = 0.008) in the meat from pigs fed MBE compared with the control group. The MBE supplementation reduced (P = 0.039) by 30% the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in raw pork over 6 d of aerobic refrigerated storage. Instead, no effect on lipid oxidation was observed in cooked pork. Last, the meat from pigs fed MBE reduced Fe3+-ascorbate catalyzed lipid oxidation in muscle homogenates, with a lower (P = 0.034) TBARS value than the control group after 60 min of incubation. Conclusions Dietary MBE supplementation in finishing pigs delayed the lipid oxidation in raw meat. This effect was combined with an increased catalase concentration. These results suggest that dietary MBE could have implications for improving the shelf-life of pork.

3. Mitigating heat stress of dairy cows bred in a free-stall barn by sprinkler systems coupled with forced ventilation

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a research study which had the objective of investigating the effect of a sprinkler system coupled with forced ventilation on the heat stress of dairy cows bred in a free stall barn without paddock. To this aim, an experiment was carried out inside a free-stall dairy house equipped with two different cooling systems: a fogging system associated with forced ventilation in the resting area and a sprinkler system associated with forced ventilation in the feeding alley. The experiment regarded two adjacent pens of the barn and was constituted by three different trials carried out in the following periods: 27th June - 7th July (P1), 25th July - 4th August (P2), 24th August - 3rd September (P3). The experimental protocol of each trial required that the treatment group was housed in one pen where the two cooling systems were always activated following an established timetable, whereas the control group was housed in the other pen, where the sprinkler system associated with forced ventilation was always deactivated. Climatic parameters were measured inside each pen of the barn and outside. Then, thermal humidity index (THI) was calculated. Rectal temperature and respiration rate of a sample of dairy cows were monitored each day during the three periods considered (P1, P2 and P3). During the three trials the cows of both groups were subjected to climatic conditions that resulted in average daily THI values between 72.8 and 74.7, corresponding to mild or moderate heat stress. However, during daytime, air temperature and relative humidity reached values corresponding to a severe heat stress, as attested by the maximum THI values that were higher than or very close to 80. Furthermore, it was observed that the sprinklers do not influence the microclimatic conditions. However, the physiological parameters values of the treatment group were always significantly lower than the corresponding ones of the control group. Specifically, the system especially influenced the respiration rate that, in the treatment group, was close to 50 breath/min, while in the control group it reached 70 breath/min. The sprinkler system had more limited effects on rectal temperature that, however, in the treatment group was significantly lower than in the control group (38.7°C to 38.8°C vs 39.1°C to 39.4°C) in all the three periods of the experiment. These results show that the sprinkler system could be useful to mitigate heat stress in dairy cows.

4. Dietary Pomegranate Pulp: Effect on Ewe Milk Quality during Late Lactation

Abstract: Pomegranate pulp, a by-product of the pomegranate juice industry, contains a remarkable quantity of bioactive compounds that can favorably affect ruminant metabolism and milk quality. The present paper investigated the effect of dietary pomegranate pulp on milk yield and quality during late lactation in grazing ewes. Twenty Comisana ewes (150 ± 10 days in milk) were subdivided into control (CTRL) and pomegranate (PP) groups. The CTRL group received a corn-barley based concentrate, while the PP group received a concentrate containing 64.8% pomegranate pulp. Dietary treatment did not affect milk yield. CTRL milk had a greater percentage of β-casein and total casein, while αs1-casein percentage tended to be greater in the PP group. The PP milk showed a lower percentage of 14:0, 16:0, but a greater percentage of vaccenic, rumenic, and α-linolenic acid. Punicic acid was detected only in the PP milk. Total antioxidant capacity (ORAC) was greater in the CTRL milk as compared with the hydrophilic ORAC. Dietary pomegranate pulp increased milk health quality with no detrimental effects on milk yield. Therefore, pomegranate pulp could represent a strategy for improving milk quality and reducing feeding cost during a less profitable phases such as late lactation. Also, dietary pomegranate pulp, as an alternative to traditional feedstuffs, may lower feed-to-food competition in livestock production.

5. Lamb meat colour stability as affected by dietary tannins

Abstract: Twenty-one male Comisana lambs were divided into three groups at 45 days of age and were individually penned for 60 days. Seven lambs were fed a concentrate-based diet (C), seven lambs received the same concentrate with the addiction of tannins from quebracho (Schinopsis lorentzii; T), whereas the remaining animals were fed exclusively fresh vetch (Vicia sativa; H). Colour descriptors (a*, b* and H*) and metmyoglobin (MMb) percentages were measured on minced semimembranosus muscle over 14 days of refrigerated storage in a high oxygen atmosphere. Regardless of dietary treatment, meat redness decreased, while yellowness and hue angle increased (P < 0.001) over storage duration. However, higher a* values, lower b* values and lower H* values were observed in meat from both H- and T-fed animals as compared to meat from C-fed lambs (P = 0.012; P = 0.02; P = 0.003, respectively). Metmyoglobin formation increased over time (P < 0.001), but H diet resulted in lower metmyoglobin percentages than C diet (P = 0.007). We conclude that the inclusion of tannins into the concentrate improved meat colour stability compared to a tannin-free concentrate. Moreover, the protective effect of tannins against meat discolouration was comparable to that obtained by feeding lambs fresh herbage.

Abstract: Abstract Marine heatwaves (MHWs) represent anomalously warm temperature conditions of seawater that may affect marine life and ocean biogeochemistry. Under such conditions, phytoplankton communities may modify their structure and functions, and their resilience is not assured. This study characterizes the impact of MHWs on the phytoplankton spring bloom in the North‐Western Mediterranean Sea. Here, we synergistically combine autonomous observations from BioGeoChemical‐Argo floats, satellite‐based and marine ecosystem model data, and show that MHW events occurring during winter drastically inhibit phytoplankton carbon biomass in spring by up to 70%. Such reduction is related to the enhanced stratification of the water column under MHWs which hinders the renewal of nutrients from deep‐ocean reservoirs, thus preventing surface phytoplankton from blooming. This process negatively impacts particulate organic carbon stocks within the mixed layer, while severe events cause an earlier shift of phytoplankton phenology that provokes changes in zooplankton biomass distribution.

In this review article, the aim is to disclose all the literature contributions about the synthesis of these compounds and the study of their reactivity, from the early examples to the most recent synthetic approaches. Recently, there has been a growth of interest for this heterocycle, driven by the publication of novel synthetic methodologies based on palladium-catalyzed intramolecular C-H amination and organocatalyzed ring-closure of 2-(N-Boc-anilino)-α-ketoesters/amides.

Abstract: The discarding of agri-food by-products is a stringent problem due to their high environmental impact. Recovery strategies can lead to a reduction of waste and result in new applications. Agri-food waste represents a source of bioactive molecules, which could promote health benefits. The primary goal of this research has been the assessment of the antioxidant activity of milk permeate, a dairy farm by-product, and the isolation and identification of peptide fractions endowed with antioxidant activity. The chromatographic extraction of the peptide fractions was carried out, and the peptides were identified by mass spectrometry. The fractions showed radical scavenging activity in vitro. Moreover, the results in the Caco-2 cell model demonstrated that the peptide fractions were able to protect from oxidative stress by stimulating the Keap1/Nrf2 antioxidant signaling pathway, increasing the transcription of antioxidant enzymes. In addition, the bioactive peptides can affect cellular metabolism, increasing mitochondrial respiration. The action of the peptide fractions was also assessed in vivo on a zebrafish model and resulted in the protection of the whole organism from the adverse effects of acute cold stress, highlighting their strong capability to protect from an oxidative insult. Altogether, the results unveil novel recovery strategies for food by-products as sources of antioxidant bioactive peptides that might be utilized for the development of functional foods.

Abstract: International audience; A rapid synthesis of enantioenriched 2,3,4-trisubstituted tetrahydropyrans in good yields and stereoselectivities is reported. The first step is a domino organocatalytic reaction between ambident electrophilic and 1,4-bis-nucleophilic 1,2-ketoamides and 1,3-bis-electrophilic enals, leading to aza-oxa-bicyclo[3.2.1]octane. Then, the TiCl4/Et3SiH system ensures a chemoselective cleavage of the C−N bond and affords the desired trisubstituted tetrahydropyran in good yield and with conservation of the precursors optical purity. This final synthetic operation includes two consecutive oxocarbenium ion formation and reductions.

15. Survival rate of indirectly bonded brackets using single vs. two-component orthodontic adhesive: A 12-month split-mouth clinical trial

Abstract: Objective: Compare the bonding survival rate of two distinct bonding materials: Ortho Solo + Gradia LoFlo Resin and single component GC Ortho Connect. Materials and Methods: Indirect bonding fixed appliance treatment was required for 26 consecutive patients, 8 males and 18 females, with a mean age of 22.1 +/- 4.2 years. All patients were treated with SWM (Straight-Wire Mirabella) technique (Sweden and Martina, Due Carrare, Padova, Italy). Each patient's bonding process followed a contralateral pattern. Firstly, a 37 % orthophosphoric acid etching gel was used for 20 s, subsequently the single or two components light-cured adhesives were applied through a split-mouth cross-arch procedure. The patients underwent a 12-month follow-up period and brackets failures were rebounded, but not further included in the study. Statistical analysis was performed to analyse the survival rate of the bonding materials and the influence of the variables, with a significant level of α = 0,05. Results: The GC Connect group was used on 349 teeth, while the Ortho Solo + Gradia group was used on 351 teeth, and the indirect debonding rate was respectively 17.5% and 12.8%. With respect to the total sample, statistically significant values were found for both sex and dental arch. The bracket’s survival rate for incisors, canines, premolars and molars was not significant. However, a higher debonding rate was clinically appreciable in upper and lower molars. Conclusion: In a 12-months observation period, considering all maxillary and mandibular teeth the indirect survival rate for the group GC Ortho Connect and Ortho Solo + Gradia was respectively 82.5% and 87.2%. Although the difference was not significant, a pronounced tendency to debonding for the single component group was appreciable from a clinically point of view.

Abstract: Cinchona alkaloid derivatives featuring a guanidinium group in diverse positions efficiently catalyze the cleavage of the RNA model compound 2-hydroxypropyl p-nitrophenyl phosphate (HPNP). Their high catalytic efficiency as phosphodiesterases and the potentiometric and kinetic investigations indicate the existence of a high degree of cooperation between the guanidinium group and the quinuclidine moiety with the operation of a general acid/general base mechanism. The performance of these compounds was investigated and compared in the kinetic resolution of HPNP. These data were also compared with the results of DFT calculations on the transition states of the transesterification reaction that, in part, predict and rationalize the experimental data.

Abstract: A common problem encountered in enantioselective organocatalysis is the aggregation of the catalyst, which can result in a relevant decrease of the efficiency and selectivity of the process. In the asymmetric synthesis of chiral benzofuranones, recently reported by us, we noted a remarkable increase of the reaction yield upon the addition of one of the reagents in a portionwise manner rather than in a single addition. We investigated this phenomenon by several experimental techniques such as 1D and 2D NMR experiments, UV-Vis spectroscopy, circular dichroism and dynamic light scattering. In addition, we studied the kinetic profile of this reaction using a simple numerical model and carried out in silico investigations. All these different approaches point to the conclusion that in the reaction medium a supramolecular polymerization/aggregation phenomenon, based on weak interactions, occurs and such a process is promoted by a quinone, which is one of the reagents of the benzofuranone synthesis. The portionwise mode of addition is a known strategy which can improve the performance of many synthetic procedures and this strategy is commonly adopted on account of empirical experience. However, our results provide an explanation, based on a chemical kinetic model, of the reason why the portionwise addition affects in such a dramatic way the yield of the benzofuranone synthesis catalyzed by Cinchona alkaloids.

Abstract: The organocatalyzed addition of several malonates to 1,4-benzoquinones affords benzofuranones bearing a quaternary stereocenter with good enantioselectivity. This reaction is an intramolecular desymmetrization since it proceeds through the formation of an arylated achiral malonate that cyclizes to give the reaction product. The addition rate of the quinone dramatically affects the reaction yield which was originally low. The yield was considerably increased, in some cases, from less than 20 % to over 95 %, by adding the quinone in portions rather than at once, keeping similar enantioselectivity. A possible rationalization for the preferential formation of the indicated enantiomer has been investigated by DFT calculations.

Abstract: Comprehensive mechanistic studies on the enantioselective aldol reaction between isatin (1 a) and acetone, catalyzed by L-leucinol (3 a), unraveled that isatin, apart from being a substrate, also plays an active catalytic role. Conversion of the intermediate oxazolidine 4 into the reactive syn-enamine 6, catalyzed by isatin, was identified as the rate-determining step by both the calculations (ΔG(≠) =26.1 kcal mol(-1) for the analogous L-alaninol, 3 b) and the kinetic isotope effect (kH /kD =2.7 observed for the reaction using [D6 ]acetone). The subsequent reaction of the syn-enamine 6 with isatin produces (S)-2 a (calculated ΔG(≠) =11.6 kcal mol(-1) ). The calculations suggest that the overall stereochemistry is controlled by two key events: 1) the isatin-catalyzed formation of the syn-enamine 6, which is thermodynamically favored over its anti-rotamer 7 by 2.3 kcal mol(-1) ; and 2) the high preference of the syn-enamine 6 to produce (S)-2 a on reaction with isatin (1 a) rather than its enantiomer (ΔΔG(≠) =2.6 kcal mol(-1) ).

Abstract: Beam stability and timing jitter in modern linear accelerators are becoming increasingly important. In particular, if a magnetic or radio-frequency (RF) compression regime is employed, the beam time of arrival jitter at the end of the linac can be strictly correlated with the phase noise of the accelerating fields of the RF structure working off-crest. For this reason, since 2008, an RF fast-feedback technique, which acts within each RF pulse, has been successfully employed at LNF-INFN (Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati dell’Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) in the SPARC_LAB (Sources for Plasma Accelerators and Radiation Compton with Laser And Beam) facility on S-band (2856 MHz) klystrons powered by pulse-forming network (PFN) modulators, as reported in this paper. However, in order to meet the more stringent requirements of plasma wakefield acceleration schemes, some upgrades to this feedback system have been recently carried out. The first prototype has been experimentally tested on a C-band (5712 MHz) klystron, driven by a solid-state modulator, in order to investigate the possibility for additional improvement resulting from the inherently more stable power source. In this paper, the design, realization and the preliminary measurement results obtained at SPARC_LAB after such upgrades will be reviewed.

Abstract: This account describes, from a personal point of view, the possible strategies to tackle and optimize non-covalent organocatalyzed reactions. When chemical intermediates are covalently bound, predictive mechanistic scenarios can be depicted. In contrast, there are several organocatalyzed transformations (e.g., those employing cinchona alkaloids) for which optimization is essentially based on a trial-and-error approach. The experience of the authors is that these reactions can be tackled with a rational approach employing Design of Experiments (DoE). This tool is widely exploited in industrial process chemistry, but is little known within academia. Abstract: Abstract Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20 kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

Abstract: The physics potential of detecting ^8 B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model-independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged current (CC), neutral current (NC), and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of ^13 C nuclei in the liquid scintillator detectors and the expected low background level, ^8 B solar neutrinos are observable in the CC and NC interactions on ^13 C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC, and ES channels to guarantee the observation of the ^8 B solar neutrinos. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with 10 yr of data, can reach the 1 σ precision levels of 5%, 8%, and 20% for the ^8 B neutrino flux, ${\sin }^{2}{\theta }_{12}$ , and ${\rm{\Delta }}{m}_{21}^{2}$ , respectively. Probing the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics would be unique and helpful. In addition, when combined with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory measurement, the world's best precision of 3% is expected for the measurement of the ^8 B neutrino flux.

Abstract: Simple quinine as an organocatalyst mediates the addition of various naphthols to halogenated quinones to afford non-C2 -symmetrical, axially chiral biaryl products, which are promising compounds as chiral ligands and organocatalysts. The rotational barrier required to have two distinct atropisomers has been evaluated in the products generated from the addition of naphthols to various quinones by means of DFT calculations and HPLC. The use of halogenated quinones as reagents was necessary to have configurationally stable enantiomeric products which can be obtained in good yield and stereoselectivity. These compounds have also been prepared in gram quantities and recrystallized to near enantiopurity.

Abstract: The presence of a “invisible mending” has been proposed as an explanation for medieval radiocarbon dating measurements made on the Shroud of Turin. Here we show that the chemical analysis which was to support this theory is not consistent, and no scientific data confirm these speculations. Specifically, the samples of the Shroud image fibers underwent a different cleaning procedure with regards to those allegedly belonging to the medieval mending. There is no reliable indication of the supposedly diagnostic compounds (e.g. gum Arabic, pentoses). The only detectable difference between the samples is the presence of a compound with an aliphatic chain which cannot be identified more in detail, e.g. as sebum.

The resulting β-formamidomalonates have been efficiently converted into β-aryl-β-isocyano esters. Their utility in the multicomponent Ugi reaction with chiral cyclic imines has been demonstrated.

Abstract: The present work focuses on the remediation of contaminated aquifers by hydrophobic organic contaminants, such as hydrocarbons or chlorinated solvents, following the approach of Surfactant Enhanced Aquifer Remediation (SEAR) technology, based on the use of surfactants for the solubilization and mobilization of pollutants. In this context, surfactin, a lipopeptide biosurfactant produced by Bacillus Subtilis, was selected as reference material for the NAPLs mobilization study. After a preliminary characterization of surfactin for the experimental evaluation of its physicochemical parameters (critical micelle concentration and surface behavior), the study involved in a batch configuration test in which toluene and perchloroethylene adsorption on a porous material was investigated in the presence and in the absence of surfactin as an indirect way to evaluate mobilization ability of surfactin through the reduction of NAPLs adsorption. Experimental measurements highlighted a relatively low CMC value (2.45 x 10-2 g L-1) and a great tendency of surfactin to adsorb at the surfaces or interfaces. The batch test showed that the surfactin solution had no effects on the adsorption of toluene and PCE. On the other hand, surfactin led to an important decrease in the affinity between dissolved pollutants and solid surface. In general, these results suggest the possibility of using surfactin in the enhanced surfactant remediation technology.

Abstract: The cinchona alkaloid quinine promotes the enantioselective nitroso-aldol reaction between alpha-aryl-alpha-cyanoacetates and nitrosobenzene to give the hydroxyamination products with total chemoselectivity. Treatment of the reaction mixture with Zn/AcOH affords the corresponding amines in high yield and moderate enantioselectivity. An unusual effect on the enantioselectivity was observed with the catalyst loading and solvent. A reductive protocol allows the construction of an optically active 1,2-diamine moiety bearing a quaternary center.

Abstract: This is an editorial regarding a paper published on Thermochimica Acta (R.N. Rogers, Thermochimca Acta, 425 (2005) 189–194). A close-up analysis of the pyrolysis-mass spectra reported in the original paper reveals that the differences found between the samples coming from different parts of the Shroud are just due to the presence of a contaminant with a long aliphatic chain. Except for the presence of the contaminant, the two pyrolysis-mass spectra look alike rather than different. Therefore, the pseudoscientific theory stating that the C14 sample might come from a “medieval invisible mending” remains unsupported by evidences.

Abstract: Abstract We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, ν 3 decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on τ 3/m 3 in the ν 3 decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet σ x , and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum σ rel.

Abstract: Commercial reagents were purified prior to use following the guidelines of Perrin and Armarego. All solvents were purified according to the method of Grubbs. Non-aqueous reagents were transferred under nitrogen or argon via syringe or cannula. Organic solutions were concentrated under reduced pressure on a Buchi rotary evaporator using a water bath. Chromatographic purification of products was accomplished using forced-flow chromatography on ICN 60 32-64 mesh silica gel 63 according to the method of Still. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) was performed on Silicycle 0.25 mm silica gel F-254 plates. Visualization of the developed chromatogram was performed by fluorescence quenching or by anisaldehyde, ceric ammonium molybdate, or potassium permanganate stain. H and C NMR spectra were recorded on a Bruker 500 (500 MHz and 125 MHz) unless otherwise noted. Abstract: The deprotonation of 3-substituted-furan-2(5H)-ones 1, obtained via the hydrolysis of 3-substituted-2,5-dihydro-2,5-dimethoxyfurans, affords in the reaction with both aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes regioselectively the unsaturated 3-substituted 5-(1′-hydroxy)-γ-butyrolactones, such as 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. The use of Lewis acids allows modulation of the diastereoisomeric ratios. The subsequent reduction, carried out with nickel boride, gives rise to the formation of the corresponding saturated 5-(1′-hydroxy)-γ-butyrolactones, such as 11, 12 and 13.

Abstract: Abstract The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator filling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $$10^{-16}\hbox { g/g}$$ 10 - 16 g/g of $$^{238}\hbox {U}$$ 238 U and $$^{232}\hbox {Th}$$ 232 Th requires a large ( $$\sim 20\,\hbox {m}^3$$ ∼ 20 m 3 ) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup.

Abstract: Abstract JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.

Abstract: Abstract Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3” PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region.

Abstract: A “one-pot” procedure to obtain α-phenylseleno-β-amino esters from the corresponding enoates is described.
