1. Transcendentality of ABJM two-point functions

Abstract

We compute the two-point function of protected dimension-1 operators in ABJM up to two loops in dimensional regularization. The result exhibits uniform transcendentality empirically, which we conjecture to hold at all orders. We leverage this property to streamline the reconstruction of the dimensional regularization expansion of master integrals in terms of bases of Euler sums of uniform transcendental weight.

2. Framing fermionic Wilson loops in ABJ(M)

Abstract

Framing plays a central role in the evaluation of Wilson loops in theories with Chern-Simons actions. In pure Chern-Simons theory, it guarantees topological invariance, while in theories with matter like ABJ(M), our theory of interest, it is essential to enforce the cohomological equivalence of different BPS Wilson loops. This is the case for the 1/6 BPS bosonic and the 1/2 BPS fermionic Wilson loops, which have the same expectation value when computed as matrix model averages from localization. This equivalence holds at framing $\mathfrak{f}=1$, which has so far been a challenge to implement in perturbative evaluations. In this paper, we compute the expectation value of the 1/2 BPS fermionic circle of ABJ(M) theory up to two loops in perturbation theory at generic framing. This is achieved by a careful analysis of fermionic Feynman diagrams, isolating their framing dependent contributions and evaluating them in point-splitting regularization using framed contours. Specializing our result to $\mathfrak{f}=1$ we recover exactly the matrix model prediction, thus realizing for the first time a direct perturbative check of localization for this operator. 3. Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays Accelerated by Magnetically Dominated Turbulence

Abstract

Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs), particles characterized by energies exceeding $10^{18}$ eV, are generally believed to be accelerated electromagnetically in high-energy astrophysical sources. One promising mechanism of UHECR acceleration is magnetized turbulence. We demonstrate from first principles, using fully kinetic particle-in-cell simulations, that magnetically dominated turbulence accelerates particles on a short timescale, producing a power-law energy distribution with a rigidity-dependent, sharply defined cutoff well approximated by the form $f_{\rm cut}\left({E, E_{\rm cut}}\right) = {\text{sech}}\left[ ( {{E}/{E_{\rm cut}}} )^2 \right]$. Particle escape from the turbulent accelerating region is energy-dependent, with $t_{\rm esc} \propto E^{-\delta}$ and $\delta \sim 1/3$. The resulting particle flux from the accelerator follows $dN/dEdt \propto E^{-s} {\text{sech}}\left[ ( {{E}/{E_{\rm cut}}} )^2 \right]$, with $s \sim 2.1$. We fit the Pierre Auger Observatory's spectrum and composition measurements, taking into account particle interactions between acceleration and detection, and show that the turbulence-associated energy cutoff is well supported by the data, with the best-fitting spectral index being $s = 2.1^{+0.06}_{-0.13}$. Our first-principles results indicate that particle acceleration by magnetically dominated turbulence may constitute the physical mechanism responsible for UHECR acceleration.

Abstract

We introduce a new class of anticipative backward stochastic differential equations with a dependence of McKean type on the law of the solution, that we name MKABSDE. We provide existence and uniqueness results in a general framework with relatively general regularity assumptions on the coefficients. We show how such stochastic equations arise within the modern paradigm of derivative pricing where a central counterparty (CCP) requires the members to deposit variation and initial margins to cover their exposure. In the case when the initial margin is proportional to the Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR) of the contract price, we apply our general result to define the price as a solution of a MKABSDE. We provide several linear and non-linear simpler approximations, which we solve using different numerical (deterministic and Monte-Carlo) methods.

7. Idiom Meaning Selection Following a Prior Context: Eye Movement Evidence of L1 Direct Retrieval and L2 Compositional Assembly

Abstract

Past work has suggested that L1 readers retrieve idioms (i.e., "spill the tea") directly vs. matched literal controls ("drink the tea") following unbiased contexts, whereas L2 readers process idioms more compositionally. However, it is unclear whether this occurs when a figuratively or literally biased context "precedes" idioms. We tested this in an eye-tracking study in which 40 English-L1 and 35 English-L2 adults read English sentences containing idioms having figurative, literal, or control prior contexts. Linear mixed-effects models revealed that L1 readers processed idioms faster after a literal preamble; however, at the disambiguation region, they processed idioms' figurative interpretations more quickly as familiarity increased, suggesting a L1 reliance on direct retrieval. In contrast, L2 readers processed idioms' figurative interpretations faster as verb decomposability increased, suggesting an L2 reliance on compositional assembly. Collectively, these results suggest that meaning selection occurs in a hybrid fashion when idioms follow a biased context.

8. Measuring Perceived Trust in XAI-Assisted Decision-Making by Eliciting a Mental Model

Abstract

This empirical study proposes a novel methodology to measure users' perceived trust in an Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) model. To do so, users' mental models are elicited using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs). First, we exploit an interpretable Machine Learning (ML) model to classify suspected COVID-19 patients into positive or negative cases. Then, Medical Experts' (MEs) conduct a diagnostic decision-making task based on their knowledge and then prediction and interpretations provided by the XAI model. In order to evaluate the impact of interpretations on perceived trust, explanation satisfaction attributes are rated by MEs through a survey. Then, they are considered as FCM's concepts to determine their influences on each other and, ultimately, on the perceived trust. Moreover, to consider MEs' mental subjectivity, fuzzy linguistic variables are used to determine the strength of influences. After reaching the steady state of FCMs, a quantified value is obtained to measure the perceived trust of each ME. The results show that the quantified values can determine whether MEs trust or distrust the XAI model. Abstract

We show that the two-point function of protected bi-scalar operators in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM evaluated in dimensional regularization exhibits a uniform degree of transcendentality up to three-loop order. We conjecture that this property holds for the whole perturbative series and leverage the explicit results to postulate a prediction for the leading, order $\epsilon$, correction to all loop orders. We also consider the soft limit of three-point functions of such operators in momentum space and point out a simple and surprising perturbative relation to two-point functions, which we also extrapolate to all loop orders.

Abstract

The need for fully human-understandable models is increasingly being recognised as a central theme in AI research. The acceptance of AI models to assist in decision making in sensitive domains will grow when these models are interpretable, and this trend towards interpretable models will be amplified by upcoming regulations. One of the killer applications of interpretable AI is medical practice, which can benefit from accurate decision support methodologies that inherently generate trust. In this work, we propose FPT, (MedFP), a novel method that combines probabilistic trees and fuzzy logic to assist clinical practice. This approach is fully interpretable as it allows clinicians to generate, control and verify the entire diagnosis procedure; one of the methodology's strength is the capability to decrease the frequency of misdiagnoses by providing an estimate of uncertainties and counterfactuals. Our approach is applied as a proof-of-concept to two real medical scenarios: classifying malignant thyroid nodules and predicting the risk of progression in chronic kidney disease patients. Our results show that probabilistic fuzzy decision trees can provide interpretable support to clinicians, furthermore, introducing fuzzy variables into the probabilistic model brings significant nuances that are lost when using the crisp thresholds set by traditional probabilistic decision trees. We show that FPT and its predictions can assist clinical practice in an intuitive manner, with the use of a user-friendly interface specifically designed for this purpose. Abstract

Activity-based sensing (ABS) offers a general approach that exploits chemical reactivity as a method for selective detection and manipulation of biological analytes. Here, we illustrate the value of this chemical platform to enable new biological discovery through a case study in the design and application of ABS reagents for studying hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a major type of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that regulates a diverse array of vital cellular signaling processes to sustain life. Specifically, we summarize advances in the use of activity-based boronate probes for the detection of H2O2 featuring high molecular selectivity over other ROS, with an emphasis on tailoring designs in chemical structure to promote new biological principles of redox signaling.

Abstract

Abstract Objectives The study aimed to assess the impact on the mechanical strength and failure patterns of implant‐abutment complexes of choosing different abutment types, designs and manufacturers, aiding in selecting the optimal restorative solution. Stock and custom abutments from original and aftermarket suppliers were subjected to thermomechanical aging. Material and Methods Stock and custom abutments from the implant manufacturer (original) and a aftermarket supplier (nonoriginal) were connected to identical implants with internal connection. Custom abutments were designed in a typical molar and premolar design, manufactured using the workflow from the respective suppliers. A total of 90 implants (4 mm diameter, 3.4 mm platform, 13 mm length) equally divided across 6 groups (three designs, two manufacturers) underwent thermo‐mechanical aging according to three different regimes, simulating five (n = 30) or 10 years (n = 30) of clinical function, or unaged control (n = 30). Subsequently, all samples were tested to failure. Results During aging, no failures occurred. Abstract

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

Abstract

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a key member of the reactive oxygen species family of transient small molecules that has broad contributions to oxidative stress and redox signaling. The development of selective and sensitive chemical probes can enable the study of H2O2 biology in cell, tissue and animal models. Peroxymycin-1 is a histochemical activity-based sensing probe that responds to H2O2 via chemoselective boronate oxidation to release puromycin, which is then covalently incorporated into nascent proteins by the ribosome and can be detected by antibody staining. Here, we describe an optimized two-step, one-pot protocol for synthesizing Peroxymycin-1 with improved yields over our originally reported procedure. We also present detailed procedures for applying Peroxymycin-1 to a broad range of biological samples spanning cells to animal tissues for profiling H2O2 levels through histochemical detection by using commercially available anti-puromycin antibodies. The preparation of Peroxymycin-1 takes 9 h, the confocal imaging experiments of endogenous H2O2 levels across different cancer cell lines take 1 d, the dot blot analysis of mouse liver tissues takes 1 d and the confocal imaging of mouse liver tissues takes 3-4 d.

Abstract

In the crowded environment of bio-inspired population-based metaheuristics, the Salp Swarm Optimization (SSO) algorithm recently appeared and immediately gained a lot of momentum. Inspired by the peculiar spatial arrangement of salp colonies, which are displaced in long chains following a leader, this algorithm seems to provide an interesting optimization performance. However, the original work was characterized by some conceptual and mathematical flaws, which influenced all ensuing papers on the subject. In this manuscript, we perform a critical review of SSO, highlighting all the issues present in the literature and their negative effects on the optimization process carried out by this algorithm. We also propose a mathematically correct version of SSO, named Amended Salp Swarm Optimizer (ASSO) that fixes all the discussed problems. We benchmarked the performance of ASSO on a set of tailored experiments, showing that it is able to achieve better results than the original SSO. Finally, we performed an extensive study aimed at understanding whether SSO and its variants provide advantages compared to other metaheuristics. The experimental results, where SSO cannot outperform simple well-known metaheuristics, suggest that the scientific community can safely abandon SSO., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

We study linear and nonlinear higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) based on waveguide arrays arranged into Sierpiński gasket and Sierpiński carpet structures, both of which have non-integer effective Hausdorff dimensionality. Such fractal structures possess different discrete rotational symmetries, but both lack transverse periodicity. Their characteristic feature is the existence of multiple internal edges and corners in their optical potential landscape, and the formal absence of an insulating bulk. Nevertheless, we show that a systematic geometric shift of the waveguides in the first generation of such fractal arrays, which affects the coupling strengths between sites of this building block as well as in subsequent structure generations, enables the formation of corner states of topological origin at the outer corners of the array. We find that, in contrast to HOTIs based on periodic arrays, Sierpiński gasket arrays always support topological corner states, irrespective of the direction of the shift of the waveguides, while in Sierpiński carpet structures, corner states emerge only for one direction of the waveguide shift. We also find families of corner solitons bifurcating from linear corner states of fractal structures that remain stable practically in the entire gap in which they form. These corner states can be efficiently excited by injecting Gaussian beams into the outer corner sites of the fractal arrays. Our results pave the way toward the investigation of nonlinear effects in topological insulators with non-integer dimensionality and enrich the variety of higher-order topological states.

Abstract We show that the two-point function of protected bi-scalar operators in N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 SYM evaluated in dimensional regularization exhibits a uniform transcendental weight up to three-loop order. We conjecture that this property holds for the whole perturbative series and leverage the explicit results to postulate a prediction for the leading, order ϵ, correction to all loop orders. We also consider the soft limit of three-point functions of such operators in momentum space and point out a simple and surprising perturbative relation to two-point functions, which we also extrapolate to all loop orders.

Abstract

Abstract Tumor recognition by T cells is essential for antitumor immunity. A comprehensive characterization of T cell diversity may be key to understanding the success of immunomodulatory drugs and failure of PD-1 blockade in tumors such as multiple myeloma (MM). Here, we use single-cell RNA and T cell receptor sequencing to characterize bone marrow T cells from healthy adults (n = 4) and patients with precursor (n = 8) and full-blown MM (n = 10). Large T cell clones from patients with MM expressed multiple immune checkpoints, suggesting a potentially dysfunctional phenotype. Dual targeting of PD-1 + LAG3 or PD-1 + TIGIT partially restored their function in mice with MM. We identify phenotypic hallmarks of large intratumoral T cell clones, and demonstrate that the CD27− and CD27+ T cell ratio, measured by flow cytometry, may serve as a surrogate of clonal T cell expansions and an independent prognostic factor in 543 patients with MM treated with lenalidomide-based treatment combinations.

Abstract

Higher-order topological insulators (HOTI) are a novel topological phase beyond the framework of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence. In these peculiar systems, the topologically nontrivial boundary modes are characterized by a co-dimension of at least two. Despite several promising preliminary considerations regarding the impact of nonlinearity in such systems, the flourishing field of experimental HOTI research has thus far been confined to the linear evolution of topological states. As such, the observation of the interplay between nonlinearity and the dynamics of higher-order topological phases in conservative systems remains elusive. In our work, we experimentally demonstrate nonlinear higher-order topological corner states. Our photonic platform enables us to observe nonlinear topological corner states as well as the formation of solitons in such topological structures. Our work paves the way towards the exploration of topological properties of matter in the nonlinear regime, and may herald a new class of compact devices that harnesses the intriguing features of topology in an on-demand fashion.
