Artificial intelligence in higher education is becoming more prevalent as it promises improvements and acceleration of administrative processes concerning student support, aiming for increasing student success and graduation rates. For instance, Academic Performance Prediction (APP) provides individual feedback and serves as the foundation for distributing student support measures. However, the use of APP with all its challenges (e.g., inherent biases) significantly impacts the future prospects of young adults. Therefore, it is important to weigh the opportunities and risks of such systems carefully and involve affected students in the development phase. This study addresses students' fairness perceptions of the distribution of support measures based on an APP system. First, we examine how students evaluate three different distributive justice norms, namely, "equality," "equity," and "need." Second, we investigate whether fairness perceptions differ between APP based on human or algorithmic decision-making, and third, we address whether evaluations differ between students studying science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) or social sciences, humanities, and the arts for people and the economy (SHAPE), respectively. To this end, we conducted a cross-sectional survey with a 2 X 3 factorial design among n = 1378 German students, in which we utilized the distinct distribution norms and decision-making agents as design factors. Our findings suggest that students prefer an equality-based distribution of support measures, and this preference is not influenced by whether APP is based on human or algorithmic decision-making. Moreover, the field of study does not influence the fairness perception, except that students of STEM subjects evaluate a distribution based on the need norm as more fair than students of SHAPE subjects. Based on these findings, higher education institutions should prioritize student-centric decisions when considering APP, weigh the actual need against potential risks, and establish continuous feedback through ongoing consultation with all stakeholders.

Abstract Pelargoniums cultivated for ornamental purposes rely on efficient vegetative propagation. This study researched applicability of chlorophyll fluorescence for validating the physiological conditions of pelargonium cuttings. Results indicated a correlation between the chlorophyll fluorescence and rooting potential. The ET0/RC values were negatively correlated with the rooting efficiency between the varieties and the duration of cold storage. A negative correlation was observed between OJIP parameters, representing energy flow in thylakoids, and chlorophyll content in cuttings with lower nutritional status. The phenomenological energy fluxes for leaf cross-sections and the number of active PSII reaction centers in the not-excited state (RC/CS0) increase with raised chlorophyll concentration. This imply the influence of rooting ability on the demand for photoassimilates in pelargonium cuttings, which can be detected early on through chlorophyll fluorescence analysis but not chlorophyll content measurements. Chlorophyll fluorescence evaluation, along with specific OJIP test parameters such as the performance indices PIABS and PItotal, prove useful for predicting rooting efficiency in relation to the nutritional status of cuttings, suggesting the effects of cuttings cold storage and discerning varietal differences in rooting. This study establishes the pragmatic application of chlorophyll fluorescence assessment for elucidating the physiological intricacies of pelargonium cuttings and factors influencing rooting efficiency.

This article offers a view on the emerging practice of managing external relations of the modern university, and the role of science communication in this. With a representative sample of research universities in four countries, we seek to broaden our understanding of the "science communication (SC) function" and its niche within the modern university. We distinguish science communication from corporate communication functions and examine how they distribute across organisational levels. We find that communication functions can be represented along a spectrum of (de)centralisation: public relations and marketing activities are more likely carried out at the central level (central offices), and public affairs and SC activities are more likely carried out at decentral levels (e.g. in specific offices and/or research institutes, departments). This study shows that little attention is paid to science communication at central structures, suggesting that it is not a practice that aligns easily with university corporate communication, yet SC might find its niche increasingly in decentral locations of activity.

Introduction: The prevalence of hypertension among patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) undergoing hemodialysis (HD) ranges from 72 to 88% depending on applied diagnostic criteria and the chosen method of blood pressure measurement. Despite the guidelines recommending the widespread use of renin-angiotensin system blockers (RASBs) in patients with kidney disease, their utilization in patients on HD may be suboptimal, especially in patients with preserved diuresis. This hesitance that often steams from concern is often due to fear of a decrease in eGFR and a subsequent decrease in diuresis. The aim of this study was to compare clinical characteristics, blood pressure, safety, and HD adequacy indices in hypertensive HD patients on multiple antihypertensive drug regimens, including diuretic treated with RASB (RASB group) or without RASB (no-RASB) with preserved residual diuresis. We sought to examine the real-life use of RASB in HD patients in relation to their clinical characteristics, blood pressure, safety, and HD adequacy. Methods: From a database of 5,879 patients receiving HD (mean age 65.2 ± 14.2 years, 60% of males) of the largest provider of HD in the country, we selected the subgroup treated with at least three antihypertensive medications including diuretics. We compared patients treated with RASB to counterparts without RASB (no-RASB). Results: The RASB group has similar age and gender proportions as well as BMI and bioimpedance compared to counterparts. However, dry body mass was significantly lower in the RASB group (78.1 ± 18.3 kg vs. 80.0 ± 18.2 kg, p < 0.017). Prevalence of diabetes mellitus was similar in both groups, but RASB-treated patients have cardiovascular diseases more frequently (70.1 vs. 60.8%; p < 0.001). Systolic blood pressure and the number of antihypertensive drugs used were significantly higher in RASB patients than in counterparts (146 ± 16 mm Hg vs. 144 ± 15 mm Hg; p < 0.001 and 4.1 ± 0.9 vs. 3.5 ± 0.5; p < 0001, respectively). RASB-treated patients have significantly longer dialysis vintage (52.7 ± 44.4 months vs. 40.2 ± 40.9 months; p < 0.001) and dialysis time (722 ± 87.1 min/week vs. 713 ± 93.4 min/week; p < 0.017) than counterparts. Serum potassium was slightly but significantly higher in RASB (5.3 ± 0.8 mmol/L vs. 5.1 ± 0.7 mmol/L; p < 0.01). Conclusions: In the real world setting, RASB can be safely used in HD patients treated with diuretics with preserved residual diuresis. Given that many HD patients present numerous multimorbidities, RASB should not only be considered as an additional hypotensive drug in poorly controlled hypertension but also in other compelling indications in HD patients. The tendency toward hyperkalemia in HD patients could be effectively managed with appropriate diet and HD prescription adjustments.

Abstract To reveal the sources of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in humans, animal models, mainly rodents, have been used. Here, we propose a pig model of T2D. Weaned piglets were fed high fat/high sugar diet suppling 150% of metabolizable energy. Measurements of weight gain, blood morphology, glucose plasma levels, cholesterol, and triglycerides, as well as glucose tolerance (oral glucose tolerance test, OGTT) were employed to observe T2D development. The histology and mass spectrometry analyses were made post mortem. Within 6 months, the high fat-high sugar (HFHS) fed pigs showed gradual and significant increase in plasma triglycerides and glucose levels in comparison to the controls. Using OGTT test, we found stable glucose intolerance in 10 out of 14 HFHS pigs. Mass spectrometry analysis indicated significant changes in 330 proteins in the intestine, liver, and pancreas of the HFHS pigs. These pigs showed also an increase in DNA base modifications and elevated level of the ALKBH proteins in the tissues. Six diabetic HFHS pigs underwent Scopinaro bariatric surgery restoring glycaemia one month after surgery. In conclusion, a high energy diet applied to piglets resulted in the development of hyperlipidaemia, hyperglycaemia, and type 2 diabetes being reversed by a bariatric procedure, excluding the proteomic profile utill one month after the surgery.

BACKGROUND: Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is a potentially serious complication that can occur during the reintroduction of nutrition in individuals who have experienced a period of malnutrition or starvation. The pathophysiology of RFS is multifaceted and primarily driven by shifts in electrolytes, fluids, and metabolic substrates, including phosphate, potassium and magnesium, as well as thiamine deficiency. RFS can be easily overlooked due to the wide range of clinical presentations, from asymptomatic electrolyte disturbance to multiorgan failure. It is vital to recognize the condition to identify at-risk patients and implement preventive measures. OBJECTIVES: This review article aims to increase awareness of refeeding syndrome, educate physicians and other healthcare professionals, especially those outside of nutrition support teams, and provide a concise overview of the existing knowledge and suggested guidelines regarding RFS. CONCLUSIONS: Although refeeding syndrome is potentially fatal, its occurrence is preventable. During the initial 2-5 days of increased calorie intake, it is crucial to monitor the concentrations of phosphate and other electrolytes, as well as to check for any new symptoms. The key components of RFS therapy include slow increases in feeding rates, phosphate and potassium replacement, fluid management, and thiamine supplementation. Further research is required on refeeding syndrome, including epidemiological studies, investigations into pathophysiology such as the role of magnesium, and large-scale randomized controlled clinical trials to establish a consensus on management.

INTRODUCTION: Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a disease characterized by idiopathic serous elevation of the sensory layer of the retina in the proximity of the macula. This phenomenon predominantly manifests unilaterally, particularly in young males who exhibit increased susceptibility to stress. The optimal treatment strategy for CSC remains questionable due to a diverse range of symptoms, variable clinical courses, an overall limited understanding of CSC’s pathophysiology and a lack of consensus on classification systems. Recently, there has been growing adoption of micropulse laser therapy in CSC treatment, allowing targeted action on retinal pigment epithelium, without causing damage to nearby photoreceptors. The aim was to evaluate the use of micropulse laser therapy in chronic CSC. DESCRIPTION AND RESULTS: A 38-year-old patient with recurrent CSC in the right eye, previously treated locally with eye drops and oral medication for over a year, underwent evaluation. At the time of diagnosis, the patient exhibited a visual acuity of 0.63, intraocular pressure of 19 mmHg, and a central retinal thickness of 530 µm, as measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Fluorescein angiography (FA) confirmed the diagnosis, leading to the qualification for retinal micropulse laser therapy. Following the treatment, a subsequent FA test revealed improvement in the patient’s clinical condition, with a vision acuity of 1.0 and intraocular pressure reduced to 17 mmHg. Additionally, the central retinal thickness measured by OCT decreased to 299 µm. CONCLUSIONS: The use of micropulse laser therapy demonstrates the potential to achieve sustainable clinical effects in patients with recurrent CSC.

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into higher education, particularly through Academic Performance Prediction (APP), promises enhanced educational outcomes. However, it simultaneously raises concerns regarding data privacy, potential biases, and broader socio-technical implications. Our study, focusing on Germany–a pivotal player in shaping the European Union's AI policies–seeks to understand prevailing perceptions of APP among students and the general public. Initial findings of a large standardized online survey suggest a divergence in perceptions: While students, in comparison to the general population, do not attribute a higher risk to APP in a general risk assessment, they do perceive higher societal and, in particular, individual damages from APP. Factors influencing these damage perceptions include trust in AI and personal experiences with discrimination. Students further emphasize the importance of preserving their autonomy by placing high value on self-determined data sharing and explaining their individual APP. Recognizing these varied perceptions is crucial for educators, policy-makers, and higher education institutions as they navigate the intricate ethical landscape of AI in education. This understanding can inform strategies that accommodate both the potential benefits and concerns associated with AI-driven educational tools.

Study region: A short reach of the Jeziorka river and its upstream catchment in central Poland Study focus: Climate change is expected to have significant impacts on freshwater ecosystems, particularly on temperate region streams resulting often in changes to spatiotemporal distribution of macroinvertebrate species, as well as losses in richness and aquatic biodiversity due to the loss of suitable habitat. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of climate change on the habitat suitability and environmental flow violations for the filter feeder functional group of macroinvertebrate communities in a temperate lowland river in central Poland. To achieve this, we have successfully integrated hydrological (SWAT+), hydraulic (HEC-RAS 1D and SRH-2D), and habitat (CASiMiR) models. We have forced the model cascade with GCM/RCM projections to determine changes in future habitat conditions for a selected reach of the Jeziorka river. New hydrological insights for the region: Future habitat conditions may deteriorate, as reflected in overwhelmingly negative trends in the hydraulic habitat suitability (HHS) index. According to the projections, there will be fewer days with the necessary environmental flows for filter feeders in the future. The frequency and duration of environmental flow violations, caused by too low or too high flows, depend on the climate model scenarios and timeframes. Our findings will aid water resource planners in achieving sustainable water resource management and meeting environmental flow requirements in the face of a changing climate.

Air pollution both anthropogenic and from natural sources impacts human health and is a rising problem for healthcare around the world. Key pollutants, such as particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and sulphur dioxide, contribute especially to respiratory illnesses. This review examines recent studies in the field of asthma and air pollution correlation, particularly mechanisms of air pollution-related damage, asthma symptoms exacerbations and the risk of developing the disease due to poor air quality. Studies show that pollutants affect the immune system by triggering pro-inflammatory responses and oxidative stress, particularly in individuals with asthma. The review present findings of exacerbation of asthma symptoms and increased frequency of asthma attacks along with higher rates of hospital admissions and emergency room visits due to exposure to common air pollutants. Additionally, prenatal and early-life exposure to traffic-related air pollution proved to significantly increase the risk of developing asthma in children. The review also critically identifies data gaps and methodological inconsistencies in some investigations. The complex relationship between air pollution and asthma is for sure an interesting field to explore furtherly. Analysed materials emphasize the critical need for global measures to reduce air pollution, including stricter air quality regulations and public awareness initiatives.

However, along with this popularity comes an increasing risk of using substances classified as doping in sports. This article examines the current state of knowledge regarding dietary supplements used by athletes, considering the potential risk of violating anti-doping regulations. The article discuss popular ingredients such creatine, beta-alanine, branched-chain amino acids and others.

Depression is the most prevalent mental health condition. It’s estimated that nearly 5% of adults suffer from this disorder globally. Depression is marked by ongoing sadness and a loss of interest or pleasure in activities that were once enjoyable or fulfilling. It can also lead to disruptions in sleep and eating patterns. Common symptoms include fatigue and difficulty concentrating. According to WHO diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose which leads to the damage of the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves. Nowadays the occurrence of diabetes mellitus, obesity and depression is getting higher and higher. Both conditions stand as prominent health issues in today’s society. Recent pandemic, wars, problems of the current world can cause depression and anxiety disorders. The fast-paced nature of our lives, work-life balance issues, sedentary habits, and time constraints can lead to opting for fast food and neglecting a healthy diet. People with diabetes are more prone to experiencing depression. Moreover, a significant portion of cases remains underdiagnosed.

Introduction and aim of the study: Thiamine is a water-soluble vitamine, which bioactive form is necessary for energy metabolism in all cells. Deficiency of thiamine may be caused by malnutrition, alcoholism and certain diseases and it leads to an acute neuropsychiatric disorder called Wernicke encephalopathy. Untreated patients can develop a residual syndrome called Korsakoff syndrome. The aim of our study is to present current knowledge of history, pathophysiology, causes, symptoms and treatment of vitamine B1 depletion and Wernicke-Korsakoff’s syndrome. Material and methods: Our review is based on the analysis of materials collected in „Pubmed”, „Google Scholar” and other scientific articles using keywords: „thiamine”, „thiamine deficiency”, „Wernicke encephalopathy”, „Korsakoff syndrome”. Conclusions: Despite numerous studies, Wernicke encephalopathy is still difficult to diagnose. Attention should be paid to the possibility of vitamin B1 deficiency in people who are at risk of it like alcoholics, malnourished or psychiatric patients. Wernicke encephalopathy is an acute neuropsychiatric disorder so the treatment should be started as soon as possible to reduce the risk of developing Korsakoff syndrome.

Introduction and purpose: The number of invented and produced medications has increased over recent years. Besides their positive impact on health, they invariably provide various kinds of side effects. This review is focused on malignant neuroleptic syndrome, a rare condition with no fully confirmed pathogenesis, which at least partially can be explained as an adverse effect of blocking dopamine receptors. Even though it usually affects psychiatric or neurological patients, doctors of all medical specializations should stay alert, as the condition can often lead to premature death. Brief description of knowledge: The main symptoms associated with NMS are hypertonia, hyperpyrexia, autonomic instability and altered consciousness. They can appear in any configuration, sometimes followed by less characteristic manifestations. It should be primarily differentiated from serotonin syndrome, malignant hyperpyrexia and catatonia, mostly through the interview of those who have taken medications and undergone surgeries, as there are not any specific lab tests available. Fundamental treatment methods consist of neuroleptic withdrawal, intensive supportive care, drug administration and eventually ECT. Summary: NMS is an uncommon, severe disease that should be carefully considered in patients treated with neuroleptics. Due to its rarity and sudden onset, it appears to be problematic to conduct widespread research and studies, so there are still no concrete, consistent and unquestioned guidelines on recognizing and treating the condition.

In the face of escalating crypto-ransomware attacks, we introduce MIRAD, a novel dynamic detection method. MIRAD leverages machine learning to continuously monitor API calls and registry entries, detecting ransomware at all stages of infection while maintaining system performance. What sets MIRAD apart is its strong focus on interpretability. This feature allows for quick, informed adaptation to the dynamically changing threat landscape and enables the detection and elimination of errors and biases that plague black-box models. In preliminary tests on data generated in a simulated user environment, our method demonstrates a high ROC AUC, outperforming standard interpretable models such as Gaussian Naive Bayes, KNN, and Decision Trees. Importantly, MIRAD achieves a low false positive rate, addressing a common issue in dynamic ransomware detection. Our contributions also include a Python library for easy implementation of MIRAD and a comprehensive, publicly available ransomware detection dataset, facilitating broader research and implementation in ransomware defense.

This study investigated the effects of Discovery Learning Scientific Community Laboratories (DL-SCL) and traditional non-DLSCL laboratories on students' conceptual understanding in a Physics-1 lab. At many universities, physics programs use a traditional lab style, despite research on the benefits for reform-oriented physics labs. This DL-SCL approach included features of "inquiry-based learning" (e.g., students generated hypotheses and designed experiments) and "scientific community labs" (e.g., students discussed designs and findings). This study used a quasi-experimental design with quantitative-method data collection and analysis procedures. Twelve sections of a Physics I lab were assigned to two groups: Treatment (DL-SCL) and Control (non-DLSCL). In Treatment and Control sections, conceptual understanding was measured pre/post using the Mechanics Baseline Test (MBT) and the Force Concept Inventory (FCI). Study findings indicated that DL-SCL approach in teaching Physics Lab-1 significantly improved students' conceptual understanding.
