28. Microwave-assisted chemical modification of g-C3N4 for photoinduced processes: organic degradation, hydrogen production and selective oxidation of alcohols.

Abstract

g-C3N4 powders were treated by means of the microwave technique in three different aqueous and organic media (HNO3, NaOH and N,N-dimethylformamide). All powders were analyzed by XRD reveling that g-C3N4 maintains its structure. The morphology of the samples was analyzed with scanning electron microscopy, where the micrographs reveals that the modification occurs on the surface of the g-C3N4. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was evaluated in the degradation of ciprofloxacin, hydrogen production and for the selective partial oxidation of 4-methoxybenzylalcohol (4-MBA) to its aldehyde. The sample treated with HNO3 (C3N4-HNO3) shows the best photocatalytic performance in the degradation of ciprofloxacin achieving a degradation around 57%. On the other hand, sample treated with N,N-dimethylformamide (C3N4-DMF) presents the highest hydrogen production (283 µmol H2 g−1 h−1). In the last process, samples C3N4-HNO3 and C3N4-DMF show an 80% of selectivity in the conversion of 4-MBA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Photoreforming (PR) of biomass can be considered a viable technology under mild experimental conditions to produce hydrogen with a high reaction rate using compounds from renewable resources and waste materials. The application of biomass PR gives rise to both hydrogen generation and biomass waste valorization. The process could be scaled up to obtain hydrogen under natural sunlight irradiation, and research on polymeric carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based photocatalysts has been widely carried out in recent years. The non-metallic-based carbon nitride materials are economical and (photo)stable polymer semiconductors, and their physicochemical surface and electronic properties are optimal for obtaining H2, which can be considered a gas that does not cause major environmental problems. Some hindrances related to their structure, such as the low absorption of visible light and the relatively high recombination rate of electron-hole pairs, restrict the performance; therefore, it is necessary to improve their activity and the yield of the reaction by modifying them in various ways. Various types of solutions have been proposed in this regard, such as, for example, their coupling with other semiconductors to form composite materials. The current mini-review aims to overview the PR field, reporting some of the most interesting papers devoted to understanding the role of g-C3N4 in biomass PR. Information on many physico-chemical aspects related to the performance of the process and possible ways to obtain better results than those present up to now in the literature will be reported. Abstract

This work reports on the light-induced heterogeneous photodegradation of four micro-contaminants (MCs): Carbamazepine (C), Flumequine (F), Ibuprofen (I), and Sulfamethoxazole (S), using two different heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes. The first one is the semiconductor photocatalysis, run in the presence of the suspension of a home prepared TiO 2 (TiO 2 HP); the second one is an heterogeneous photo-Fenton process run in the presence of a hybrid magnetic nanomaterial (MB3) with an iron oxides core and an organic shell made of bio-based substances (BBS) isolated from urban biowaste. The two materials work upon two different mechanisms and were already tested (and the action mechanism hypothesized) at the lab scale under model conditions: TiO 2 acts as photocatalyst through the photo-generation of hole/electron pairs able to give rise to oxidation and reduction reactions, whereas hybrid magnetic nanomaterial acts in the presence of H 2 O 2 by a photo-Fenton like mechanism. The results evidenced the better performances of TiO 2 HP (also better than the well-known reference TiO 2 P25). Preliminary photodegradation experiments carried out in a pilot plant under natural solar radiation confirmed the good results obtained with TiO 2 HP. Moreover, in the adopted experimental conditions, the Fe(II) leached from MB3 can be considered as responsible of the MCs degradation through a homogeneous photo-Fenton reaction, where MB3 act as iron reservoir.
