1. What is conceptual disruption?

Abstract

Recent work on philosophy of technology emphasises the ways in which technology can disrupt our concepts and conceptual schemes. We analyse and challenge existing accounts of conceptual disruption, criticising views according to which conceptual disruption can be understood in terms of uncertainty for conceptual application, as well as views assuming all instances of conceptual disruption occur at the same level. We proceed to provide our own account of conceptual disruption as an interruption in the normal functioning of concepts and conceptual schemes. Moreover, we offer a multilevel taxonomy thereof, where we distinguish between instances of conceptual disruptions occurring at different levels (conceptual scheme, conceptual clusters, and individual concepts), taking on different forms (conceptual gaps and conceptual conflicts), and leading to different degrees of severity (extending from mild to severe). We also provide detailed accounts through historical examples of how conceptual gaps and conceptual conflicts can occur at different times in the very same process of conceptual disruption. Abstract

This chapter provides a theoretical lens on conceptual disruption. It offers a typology of conceptual disruption, discusses its relation to conceptual engineering, and sketches a programmatic view of the implications of conceptual disruption for the ethics of technology. We begin by distinguishing between three different kinds of conceptual disruptions: conceptual gaps, conceptual overlaps, and conceptual misalignments. Subsequently, we distinguish between different mechanisms of conceptual disruption, and two modes of conceptual change. We point out that disruptions may be induced by technology, but can also be triggered by intercultural exchanges. Conceptual disruptions frequently yield conceptual uncertainty and may call for conceptual and ethical inquiry. We argue that a useful approach to address conceptual disruptions is to engage in conceptual engineering. We outline what conceptual engineering involves and argue that discussions on conceptual disruption and conceptual engineering can benefit from closer integration. In closing, we discuss the relevance of studying conceptual disruption for technology ethics, and point to the promise of this line of research to innovate practical philosophy at large., Ethics & Philosophy of Technology

Abstract

Mediterranean temporary ponds (MTP) are considered among the most interesting habitats in the Mediterranean bioclimatic region due to the range of rare and threatened taxa they host. Their ephemeral vegetation presents a particular floristic composition, adapted to unstable ecological conditions due to the alternation between flood and drought. Indeed, these amphibian plant species are established on soils flooded in winter and dry since early summer. The water depth and inundation period determine the plant communities distribution. The vegetation can be referred to the class Isoeto-Nanojuncetea, that has a wide distribution and is represented in the study area by two orders: Isoetetalia, Mediterranean and W-European, with spring and early summer bloom, and Nanocyperetalia, C-European, with late summer and autumn bloom. This study describes for the first time the Isoeto-Nanojuncetea plant communities in Puglia Region, in SE-Italy, where the class distribution was unknown up to now. The here adopted syntaxonomical scheme is consistent with numerical analysis, resulting in homogenous floristic and ecological communities that correspond to syntaxa at association level. The phytosociological approach to the interpretation and management of vegetation and biodiversity has been recently revived by the habitat-type classification adopted by the European 92/43/EEC "Habitat" Directive in its Annex I. The here considered plant communities belong to the priority habitat "3170∗ Mediterranean temporary ponds". Aiming to typify them, 170 surveys were carried out in temporary pools over a wide area resulting from a detailed survey that took into account the whole Puglia territory. These complexes of vegetation are very sensitive to the environmental and anthropic disturbance, so they might be good bioindicators with high value for habitat monitoring and conservation.

Abstract

INTRODUZIONE Un blocco operatorio è una realtà complessa in cui si avvicendano diverse figure professionali. Perseguire obiettivi di efficacia ed efficienza risulta di primaria importanza ma allo stesso tempo di difficile attuazione. In tale contesto, sprechi di risorse e tempo sono un frequente rischio e possono impattare negativamente sulla qualità dell’assistenza procurando ritardi, cancellazioni e riprogrammazioni delle procedure. L’obiettivo dello studio è stato operare una valutazione complessiva del blocco operatorio di un presidio ospedaliero dell’Italia nord-orientale, per evidenziare i punti di debolezza e promuovere una strategia di miglioramento. MATERIALI E METODI La valutazione è stata condotta in tre fasi: iniziale process mapping del contesto lavorativo, analisi qualiquantitativa della documentazione sanitaria e valutazione finale delle criticità mediante Root Cause Analysis (RCA). Al fine di promuovere strategie di cambiamento, si è impostato un progetto di miglioramento basato sul modello del Plan Do Check Act (PDCA). RISULTATI Afferiscono al blocco operatorio sei unità operative: Chirurgia Generale, Ginecologia e Ostetricia, Oculistica, Ortopedia e Traumatologia, Urologia ed Endourologia. Al termine della valutazione sono state individuate e rappresentate mediante diagramma di Ishikawa le cause profonde dell’inefficienza, suddivise in quattro macro aree (1) organizzazione/struttura: non ottimale distribuzione delle sedute operatorie con una percentuale di occupazione delle sale del 98% il mattino e solo del 13% il pomeriggio; incompleta acquisizione del software PACS; (2) personale: eterogeneità delle competenze tecnico-informatiche; riduzione per ragioni di contenimento dei costi e per aumento delle inidoneità psicofisiche; (3) tecnologie: assenza di un’interfaccia tra i software e investimenti tecnologici insufficienti rispetto alle esigenze del contesto; (4) metodi: insufficienza di procedure e percorsi interni; scarsa offerta formativa azienda

Abstract

The ASTRI SST-2M telescope is an end-to-end prototype proposed for the Small Size class of Telescopes (SST) of the future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). The prototype is installed in Italy at the INAF observing station located at Serra La Nave on Mount Etna (Sicily) and it was inaugurated in September 2014. This paper presents the software and hardware architecture and development of the system dedicated to the control of the mount, health, safety and monitoring systems of the ASTRI SST-2M telescope prototype. The mount control system installed on the ASTRI SST-2M telescope prototype makes use of standard and widely deployed industrial hardware and software. State of the art of the control and automation industries was selected in order to fulfill the mount related functional and safety requirements with assembly compactness, high reliability, and reduced maintenance. The software package was implemented with the Beckhoff TwinCAT version 3 environment for the software Programmable Logical Controller (PLC), while the control electronics have been chosen in order to maximize the homogeneity and the real time performance of the system. The integration with the high level controller (Telescope Control System) has been carried out by choosing the open platform communications Unified Architecture (UA) protocol, supporting rich data model while offering compatibility with the PLC platform. In this contribution we show how the ASTRI approach for the design and implementation of the mount control system has made the ASTRI SST-2M prototype a standalone intelligent machine, able to fulfill requirements and easy to be integrated in an array configuration such as the future ASTRI mini-array proposed to be installed at the southern site of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA).

Abstract

The Lake of Acquatina, well studied from different points of view, was practically neglected as regards phytobenthic studies. Sampling campaigns were performed (summer 2006 and winter 2007) only recently in order to acquire information about the phytobenthic composition of the lake. On the whole 39 seaweeds were detected (22 Rhodophyta, 3 Ochrophyta and 14 Chlorophyta) and 2 spermatophyta (Cymodocea nodosa and Ruppia maritima). It was noteworthy the presence of the non-indigenous and invasive chlorophycean Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea in winter 2007, for the first time. A constant monitoring will be required, in order to detect the species spreading into the basin
