Abstract

The article reports the results of an experimental activity conducted on dredged fine-grained marine sediments and aimed to find out novel eco-friendly solutions for their mechanical stabilisation. The main idea of this research is to use seashells, i.e., another waste material, to partially replace cement binders in the mechanical stabilisation of sediments for the production of a new stable material that can potentially be used in construction. To this aim, an original procedure has been developed to obtain a powder of mussel shells without their calcination. Physical properties, one-dimensional compression behaviour and permeability of the novel mixtures including sediments, mussel shell powder and cements are presented for different curing times. The efficacy of the solutions is assessed also by comparison with the performance of control mixtures prepared by mixing the same sediments with cement only. The effects of the different treatments on the soil properties were analysed, demonstrating multiple beneficial effects of using the mussel shell powder. Evidence is provided that seashells represent a viable alternative to cement, as they were found to be as effective as traditional hydraulic binders, when replacing them up to 1/4, in enhance geomechanical and geochemical performance of the stabilized material.

Abstract

Climate change significantly alters species distributions. Numerous studies project the future distribution of species using Species Distribution models (SDMs), most often using coarse resolutions. Working at coarse resolutions in forest ecosystems fails to capture landscape-level dynamics, spatially explicit processes, and temporally defined events that act at finer resolutions and that can disproportionately affect future outcomes. Dynamic Forest Landscape Models (FLMs) can simulate the survival, growth, and mortality of (stands of) trees over long time periods at small resolutions. However, as they are able to simulate at fine resolutions, study landscapes remain relatively small due to computational constraints. The large amount of feedbacks between biodiversity, forest, and ecosystem processes cannot completely be captured by FLMs or SDMs alone. Integrating SDMs with FLMs enables a more detailed understanding of the impact of perturbations on forest landscapes and their biodiversity. Several studies have used this approach at landscape scales, using fine resolutions. Yet, many scientific questions in the fields of biogeography, macroecology, conservation management, among others, require a focus on both large scales and fine resolutions. Here, drawn from literature and experience, we provide our perspective on the most important challenges that need to be overcome to use integrated frameworks at spatial scales larger than the landscape and at fine resolutions. Future research should prioritize these challenges to better understand drivers of species distributions in forest ecosystems and effectively design conservation strategies under the influence of changing climates on spatially and temporally explicit processes. Abstract

Climate change is favouring the northward shift of Mediterranean oaks which are expanding their ranges at their leading edges. However, Mediterranean oaks have recalcitrant seeds (desiccation sensitive) that do not form seed banks, depending on climate conditions after seed fall and interactions between genetic determinants to germinate. Here we investigate the potential adaptation of Quercus suber range-wide populations to increasing spring temperature in germination timing and rates. We sowed 701 acorns from 9 populations from 10 mother trees each, at 15, 20 and 25 °C and monitored germination daily during 90 days. We modelled germination timing through Cox’s proportional-hazards models, assessed populations’ adaptation to spring temperature transfer distances and quantified the effect of acorn mass and storage duration on germination probability and timing with fixed-effects models. We used the mixed-effects models to predict germination climatic niches under current and RCP 8.5 2080 scenarios. Differences in germination timing were due to both the population origin and temperature treatment; germination rates showed a sub-optimality towards warmer-than-origin temperatures. The timing of germination decreased along with spring temperatures increment, with germination in 2080 predicted to occur 12 days earlier than to date in central Iberia. Warmer spring temperatures significantly accelerate the germination of recalcitrant Mediterranean species, which could alter seedlings’ developmental environment and ultimately populations’ regeneration and species composition. As such, germination timing should receive more attention from scientists and stakeholders and should be included in forest vulnerability assessments and assisted migration programs aiming at long-term forest regeneration to adapt forests to climate change.

Abstract

Marginal and peripheral populations are important for biodiversity conservation. Their original situation in a species’ geographic and ecological space often confers them genetic diversity and traits of high adaptive value. Yet theoretical hypotheses related to marginality are difficult to test because of confounding factors that influence marginality, namely environment, geography, and history. There is an urgent need to develop metrics to disentangle these confounding factors. We designed nine quantitative indices of marginality and peripherality that define where margins lie within species distributions, from a geographical, an environmental and a historical perspective. Using the distribution maps of eight European forest tree species, we assessed whether these indices were idiosyncratic or whether they conveyed redundant information. Using a database on marginal and peripheral populations based on expert knowledge, we assessed the capacity of the indices to predict the marginality status of a population. There was no consistent pattern of correlation between indices across species, confirming that the indices conveyed different information related to the specific geometry of the species distributions. Contrasting with this heterogeneity of correlation patterns across species, the relative importance of the indices to predict the marginality status of populations was consistent across species. However, there was still a significant country effect in the marginality status, showing a variation in expert opinion of marginality vis-á-vis the species distribution. The marginality indices that we developed are entirely based on distribution maps and can be used for any species. They pave the way for testing hypotheses related to marginality and peripherality, with important implications in quantitative ecology, genetics, and biodiversity conservation.

Abstract

Purpose of Review: Recognizing that in the context of global change, tree genetic diversity represents a crucial resource for future forest adaptation, we review and highlight the major forest genetics research achievements of the past decades in biodiversity-rich countries of the Mediterranean region. For this, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of the scientific literature spanning the past thirty years (1991–2020). Putting together the representative regionwide expertise of our co-authorship, we propose research perspectives for the next decade. Recent Findings: Forest genetics research in Mediterranean countries is organized into three different scientific domains of unequal importance. The domain “Population diversity and Differentiation” related to over 62% of all publications of the period, the domain “Environmental conditions, growth and stress response” to almost 23%, and the domain “Phylogeography” to almost 15%. Citation rate was trending the opposite way, indicating a strong and sustained interest in phylogeography and a rising interest for genetics research related to climate change and drought resistance. The share of publications from Asia and Africa to the total within the Mediterranean increased significantly during the 30-year period analyzed, reaching just below 30% during the last decade. Summary: Describing poorly known species and populations, including marginal populations, using the full potential of genomic methods, testing adaptation in common gardens, and modeling adaptive capacity to build reliable scenarios for forest management remain strategic research priorities. Delineating areas of high and low genetic diversity, for conservation and restoration, respectively, is needed. Abstract

Marteloscopes are training areas where forestry students and practitioners mark trees according to silvicultural objectives. This dataset comprises the trees selected for harvesting in a marteloscope according to different alternatives: systemic, traditional, crown and low thinning. Tree records on species, diameter and total height are also provided. Abstract

Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) provide an opportunity to up-cycle several residues into added-value materials. Although generally praised for their performance under thermal loads, the thermal behavior of AAMs is dictated by a multitude of factors and the performance of CaO-FeOx-rich systems may differ from geopolymers. Therefore, this work ascertains the high-temperature resistance of CaO-FeOx-Al2O3 -SiO2 -rich AAMs. Mortars were exposed to different heating rates (≤10 ◦C/min) and temperatures (≤1100 ◦C), and volume and mass loss, apparent density, compressive strength (CS), mineralogical composition, and morphology were evaluated. At low heating rates, the main effects noted were densification and a gradual lightening of color as the temperature rose. CS underwent an abrupt decline at 750 ◦C and recovered at higher temperatures, reaching a maximum value of 184 ± 13 MPa at 1100 ◦C. With an increased heating rate to 10 ◦C/min, the strength loss at 750 ◦C persisted, but maximum CS was halved when firing at 900 ◦C. At 1100 ◦C, a significant reduction of CS was observed, but all samples maintained their integrity. Except for 1100 ◦C at 10 ◦C/min, all sintered-AAMs presented residual CS above 40 MPa. Abstract

Marginal and peripheral populations are important for biodiversity conservation. Their original situation in a species’ geographic and ecological space often confers them genetic diversity and traits of high adaptive value. Yet theoretical hypotheses related to marginality are difficult to test because of confounding factors that influence marginality, namely environment, geography, and history. There is an urgent need to develop metrics to disentangle these confounding factors. We designed nine quantitative indices of marginality and peripherality that define where margins lie within species distributions, from a geographical, an environmental and a historical perspective. Using the distribution maps of eight European forest tree species, we assessed whether these indices were idiosyncratic or whether they conveyed redundant information. Using a database on marginal and peripheral populations based on expert knowledge, we assessed the capacity of the indices to predict the marginality status of a population. There was no consistent pattern of correlation between indices across species, confirming that the indices conveyed different information related to the specific geometry of the species distributions. Contrasting with this heterogeneity of correlation patterns across species, the relative importance of the indices to predict the marginality status of populations was consistent across species. However, there was still a significant country effect in the marginality status, showing a variation in expert opinion of marginality vis-á-vis the species distribution. The marginality indices that we developed are entirely based on distribution maps and can be used for any species. They pave the way for testing hypotheses related to marginality and peripherality, with important implications in quantitative ecology, genetics, and biodiversity conservation.

Abstract

Walnut tree species (Juglans spp.) are commonly used for high-quality wood production in plantation forestry. In this paper, the most relevant walnut plantations in Italy and Spain have been reviewed and analysed under a geographic and technician management point of view. Between 2016 and 2019 a total of 96 plantations (15 - 25 years old) were visited distributed in the North-western part of the Mediterranean basin. A statistical analysis (linear model no interaction and PCA) was then performed to evaluate the relative importance of some environmental and management variables for walnut trees in analysed plantations. Results highlighted a variable situation with many different adopted planting schemes across the regions as well as a not standardised spatial layout and management type (thinning). Lower densities and smaller trees were adopted in Italy with about 200 trees ha-1 versus 330 trees ha-1 in Spain. In addition to the age of the plantation as one of the most influencing parameters also the plantation density and the average crown diameter were highly statistically significant. Overall, the interesting potentiality of walnut for timber production with active management in suitable areas was detected as the focal point for a successful timber production from walnut trees.

Abstract

Ecological modeling refers to the construction and analysis of mathematical models aimed at understanding the complexity of ecological processes and at predicting how real ecosystems might evolve. It is a quickly expanding approach boosted by impressive accelerations in the availability of computational resources and environmental databases. In the light of foreseeing the effect of climate change on forest ecosystems, the branch of ecological modeling focusing on species distribution models (SDMs) has become widely used to estimate indices of habitat suitability and to forecast future tree distributions. However, SDMs are usually informed based solely on environmental data without any reference to the genetic makeup underlying responses to the environment, the possibility of exchanging variants helping to persist in situ, or the capacity to chase suitable conditions elsewhere. Among the main evolutionary processes that may complement forecasts of range shifts are local adaptation and gene flow, i.e., the occurrence of genetic variants conferring a population the optimal fitness in its own habitat and the exchange of adaptive alleles between populations. Local adaptation and gene flow could be described by indices of genetic diversity and structure, genetic load, genomic offset, and an admixture of genetic lineages. Here, we advocate for the development of a new analytical approach integrating environmental and genomic information when projecting tree distributions across space and time. To this aim, we first provide a literature review on the use of genetics when modeling intraspecific responses to the environment, and we then discuss the potential improvements and drawbacks deriving from the inclusion of genomic data into the current SDM framework. Finally, we speculate about the potential impacts of genomic-informed predictions in the context of forest conservation and provide a synthetic framework for developing future forest management strategies. Abstract

Within the activity of the H2020 'WOODnat' project ("Second generation of planted hardwood forests in the European Union") the growth parameters, yield and sanitary conditions of the most important walnut (Juglans spp.) plantations, established in Italy in the 1990s and in Spain starting from 1996, were recorded. One of the objectives of the project was to evaluate tree growth and stem quality to derive insight on the main environmental factors affecting the production of this valuable specie. An inventory of walnut plantations in the area of interest was necessary due to the relevance of this tree species in the EU timber market. In this paper the final dataset is presented and available with DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.3769940. The database is finalized to narrow the knowledge gap between growers and processing industry with the aim to relaunching the market for this valuable species. Data were collected in the spring 2017 and winter 2017-2018 on 27 stands established in Northern Italy (Piemonte and Lombardia), on 51 stands in Central Italy (Toscana and Marche) and on 17 stands in Spain for a total of 95 plantations. In each plantation, general information was collected such as the planting layout, spacing, age, environment conditions as well as tree-level dendrometric data and phytosanitary information. The sampled stands have been georeferenced in WGS84 reference system (EPSG 4326). These data can be exploited to assess potential wood volume obtainable and quality of raw material, and to identify the weaknesses and errors, strengths and opportunities of the experiences conducted to plan future plantings with greater awareness.

Abstract

The influence of environmental drivers and management strategies on crops growth is a focal point to deal with the potential impact of the climate changes on forest yields. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of irrigation and fertilization on growth dynamics of 'Imola' clone, an elite poplar crossed from Populus deltoides Bartr. and Populus nigra L. for short rotation coppice purposes. Using a split-plot design with three replications, two treatments were applied (irrigation and fertilization) with two levels each one: 'no' and 'yes'; 4 theses were considered: irrigation-only (IRR), fertilization-only (FRT) the irrigation with fertilization (IRF) and control (CRT). At the end of the first 5-year cycle the average yield, in dry matter, was 36.8 Mg ha for non-irrigated plots and 80.8 Mg ha for irrigated plots. While no statistical evidence was detectable for fertilization treatment, a Linear Mixed Model analysis applied to data highlighted the Summer (June-August) as key season for the irrigation of trees. Conversely, interaction between irrigation and fertilization negatively affected growth in the same period. Overall, this trial demonstrated a low impact of fertilization on growth dynamics. Water availability was confirmed as the most important factor for poplar growth, in such site, focusing on the importance of studying alternative, less impacting methods to irrigate such crops.
