Search

We present a set of photometric catalogs primarily aimed at providing the community with a comprehensive database for the study of galaxy populations in the high redshift Universe. The set gathers data from eight JWST NIRCam observational programs, targeting the Abell 2744 (GLASS-JWST, UNCOVER, DDT2756 and GO3990), EGS (CEERS), COSMOS and UDS (PRIMER), and GOODS North and South (JADES and NGDEEP) deep fields, for a total area of $\sim$0.2 sq. degrees. Photometric estimates are obtained by means of well-established techniques, including tailored improvements designed to enhance the performance on the specific dataset. We also include new measurements from HST archival data, thus collecting 16 bands spanning from 0.44 to 4.44 $\mu$m. A grand total of $\sim$530 thousand sources is detected on stacks of NIRCam 3.56 and 4.44 $\mu$m mosaics. We assess the photometric accuracy by comparing fluxes and colors against archival catalogs. We also provide photometric redshift estimates, statistically validated against a large set of robust spectroscopic data. We present the JWST Cycle 1 53.8hr medium program FRESCO, short for "First Reionization Epoch Spectroscopically Complete Observations". FRESCO covers 62 arcmin$^2$ in each of the two GOODS/CANDELS fields for a total area of 124 arcmin$^2$ exploiting JWST's powerful new grism spectroscopic capabilities at near-infrared wavelengths. By obtaining ~2 hr deep NIRCam/grism observations with the F444W filter, FRESCO yields unprecedented spectra at R~1600 covering 3.8 to 5.0 $\mu$m for most galaxies in the NIRCam field-of-view. This setup enables emission line measurements over most of cosmic history, from strong PAH lines at z~0.2-0.5, to Pa$\alpha$ and Pa$\beta$ at z~1-3, HeI and [SIII] at z~2.5-4.5, H$\alpha$ and [NII] at z~5-6.5, up to [OIII] and H$\beta$ for z~7-9 galaxies, and possibly even [OII] at z~10-12. FRESCO's grism observations provide total line fluxes for accurately estimating galaxy stellar masses and calibrating slit-loss corrections of NIRSpec/MSA spectra in the same field. Additionally, FRESCO results in a mosaic of F182M, F210M, and F444W imaging in the same fields to a depth of ~28.2 mag (5 $\sigma$ in 0.32" diameter apertures). Together with this publication, the v1 imaging mosaics are released as high-level science products via MAST. Here, we describe the overall survey design and the key science goals that can be addressed with FRESCO. We also highlight several, early science results, including: spectroscopic redshifts of Lyman break galaxies that were identified almost 20 years ago, the discovery of broad-line active galactic nuclei at z>4, and resolved Pa$\alpha$ maps of galaxies at z~1.4. We present a first look at the reddest 2-5$\mu\rm m$ sources found in deep images from the GLASS Early Release Science program. We undertake a general search, i.e. not looking for any particular spectral signatures, for sources detected only in bands redder than reachable with the Hubble Space Telescope, and which would likely not have been identified in pre-JWST surveys. We search for sources down to AB $\sim 27$ (corresponding to $>10\sigma$ detection threshold) in any of the F200W to F444W filters,with a $>1$ magnitude excess relative to F090W to F150W bands. Fainter than F444W$>25$ we find 56 such sources of which 37 have reasonably constrained spectral energy distributions to which we can fit photometric redshifts. We find the majority of this population ($\sim$ 65%) as $2$2$\mu \rm m$ boosted by a combination of the Balmer break and emission lines. The typical implied rest equivalent widths are $\sim200\unicode{0x212B}$ with some extreme objects up to $\sim 1000\unicode{0x212B}$. This is in contrast with brighter magnitudes where the red sources tend to be $z<3$ quiescent galaxies and dusty star forming objects. Our general selection criteria for red sources allow us to independently identify other phenomena as diverse as extremely low mass ($\sim 10^8$ M$_\odot$) quiescent galaxies at $z<1$, recover recently identified $z>11$ galaxies and a very cool brown dwarf., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters. 11 pages, 3 figures. We investigate the blue and optical rest-frame sizes (lambda~2300A-4000A) of three compact star-forming regions in a galaxy at z=4 strongly lensed (x30, x45, x100) by the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster A2744 using GLASS-ERS JWST/NIRISS imaging at 1.15um, 1.50mu and 2.0mu with PSF < 0.1". In particular, the Balmer break is probed in detail for all multiply-imaged sources of the system. With ages of a few tens of Myr, stellar masses in the range (0.7-4.0) x 10^6 Msun and optical/ultraviolet effective radii spanning the interval 3 < R_eff < 20 pc, such objects are currently the highest redshift (spectroscopically-confirmed) gravitationally-bound young massive star clusters (YMCs), with stellar mass surface densities resembling those of local globular clusters. Optical (4000A, JWST-based) and ultraviolet (1600A, HST-based) sizes are fully compatible. The contribution to the ultraviolet underlying continuum emission (1600A) is ~30%, which decreases by a factor of two in the optical for two of the YMCs (~4000A rest-frame), reflecting the young ages (<30 Myr) inferred from the SED fitting and supported by the presence of high-ionization lines secured with VLT/MUSE. Such bursty forming regions enhance the sSFR of the galaxy, which is ~10 Gyr^-1. This galaxy would be among the extreme analogs observed in the local Universe having high star formation rate surface density and high occurrence of massive stellar clusters in formation., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Star-forming galaxies can exhibit strong morphological differences between the rest-frame far-UV and optical, reflecting inhomogeneities in star-formation and dust attenuation. We exploit deep, high resolution NIRCAM 7-band observations to take a first look at the morphology of galaxies in the epoch of reionization ($z>7$), and its variation in the rest-frame wavelength range between Lyman $\alpha$ and 6000-4000\AA, at $z=7-12$. We find no dramatic variations in morphology with wavelength -- of the kind that would have overturned anything we have learned from the Hubble Space Telescope. No significant trends between morphology and wavelengths are detected using standard quantitative morphology statistics. We detect signatures of mergers/interactions in 4/19 galaxies. Our results are consistent with a scenario in which Lyman Break galaxies -- observed when the universe is only 400-800 Myrs old - are growing via a combination of rapid galaxy-scale star formation supplemented by accretion of star forming clumps and interactions., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, ApJL in press

Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS) provides a powerful tool for detecting strong line emission in star forming galaxies (SFGs) without the need for target pre-selection. As part of the GLASS-JWST-ERS program, we leverage the near-infrared wavelength capabilities of NIRISS ($1-2.2\mu$m) to observe rest-optical emission lines out to $\rm{z}\sim 3.4$, to a depth and with a spatial resolution higher than ever before (H$\alpha$ to z<2.4; [OIII]+H$\beta$ to z<3.4). In this letter we constrain the rest-frame [OIII]$\lambda5007$ equivalent width (EW) distribution for a sample of 76 $1<\rm{z}<3.4$ SFGs in the Abell 2744 Hubble Frontier Field and determine an abundance fraction of extreme emission line galaxies with EW$>750$A in our sample to be $12\%$. We determine a strong correlation between the measured H$\beta$ and [OIII]$\lambda5007$ EWs, supporting that the high [OIII]$\lambda5007$ EW objects require massive stars in young stellar populations to generate the high energy photons needed to doubly ionise oxygen. We extracted spectra for objects up to 2 mag fainter in the near-infrared than previous WFSS studies with the Hubble Space Telescope. We present the first rest-frame optical size-luminosity relation of galaxies at $z>7$, using the NIRCam imaging data obtained by the GLASS James Webb Space Telescope Early Release Science (GLASS-JWST-ERS) program, providing the deepest extragalactic data of the ERS campaign. Our sample consist of 19 photometrically selected bright galaxies with $m_\text{F444W}\leq27.8$ at $77$. Given the limited sample size and magnitude range, we first fix the slope to that observed for larger samples in rest-frame UV using HST samples. The median size $r_0$ at the reference luminosity $M=-21$ decreases slightly from rest-frame optical ($600\pm80$ pc) to UV ($450\pm130$ pc). We then re-fit the size-luminosity relation allowing the slope to vary. The slope is consistent with $\beta\sim0.2$ for all bands except F150W, where we find a marginally steeper slope of $\beta=0.53\pm0.15$. The steep UV slope is mainly driven by the smallest and faintest galaxies. If confirmed by larger samples, it implies that the UV size-luminosity relation breaks toward the faint end as suggested by lensing studies., Comment: Accepted by ApJL, 9 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

We exploit James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam observations from the GLASS-JWST-Early Release Science program to investigate galaxy stellar masses at z>7. We first show that JWST observations reduce the uncertainties on the stellar mass by a factor of at least 5-10, when compared with the highest quality data sets available to date. We then study the UV mass-to-light ratio, finding that galaxies exhibit a two orders of magnitude range of M/L_UV values for a given luminosity, indicative of a broad variety of physical conditions and star formation histories. As a consequence, previous estimates of the cosmic star stellar mass density - based on an average correlation between UV luminosity and stellar mass - can be biased by as much as a factor of ~6. Our first exploration demonstrates that JWST represents a new era in our understanding of stellar masses at z>7, and therefore of the growth of galaxies prior to cosmic reionization., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL. We present the first James Webb Space Telescope/NIRCam-led determination of $79.5$. Their star formation main sequence is consistent with predictions from simulations. Lastly, we introduce an analytical framework to constrain main-sequence evolution at $z>7$ based on galaxy ages and basic assumptions, through which we find results consistent with expectations from cosmological simulations. While this work only gives a glimpse of the properties of typical galaxies that are thought to drive the reionization of the universe, it clearly shows the potential of JWST to unveil unprecedented details on galaxy formation in the first billion years., Comment: Accepted by ApJL. 13 pages, 3 Figures

The GLASS James Webb Space Telescope Early Release Science (hereafter GLASS-JWST-ERS) Program will obtain and make publicly available the deepest extragalactic data of the ERS campaign. It is primarily designed to address two key science questions, namely, "what sources ionized the universe and when?" and "how do baryons cycle through galaxies?", while also enabling a broad variety of first look scientific investigations. In primary mode, it will obtain NIRISS and NIRSpec spectroscopy of galaxies lensed by the foreground Hubble Frontier Field cluster, Abell 2744. In parallel, it will use NIRCam to observe two fields that are offset from the cluster center, where lensing magnification is negligible, and which can thus be effectively considered blank fields. In order to prepare the community for access to this unprecedented data, we describe the scientific rationale, the survey design (including target selection and observational setups), and present pre-commissioning estimates of the expected sensitivity. We present the X-ray source catalog for the 479 ks Chandra exposure of the SDSS J1030+0524 field, that is centered on a region that shows the best evidence to date of an overdensity around a z > 6 quasar, and also includes a galaxy overdensity around a Compton-thick Fanaroff-Riley type II radio galaxy at z = 1.7. Using wavdetect for initial source detection and ACIS Extract for source photometry and significance assessment, we create preliminary catalogs of sources that are detected in the full, soft, and hard bands, respectively. We produce X-ray simulations that mirror our Chandra observation to filter our preliminary catalogs and get a completeness level of > 91% and a reliability level of 95% in each band. The catalogs in the three bands are then matched into a final main catalog of 256 unique sources. Among them, 244, 193, and 208 are detected in the full, soft, and hard bands, respectively. This makes J1030 field the fifth deepest extragalactic X-ray survey to date. The field is part of the Multiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile (MUSYC), and is also covered by optical imaging data from the Large Binocular Camera (LBC) at the Large Binocular Telescope, near-IR imaging data from the Canada France Hawaii Telescope WIRCam, and Spitzer IRAC. Thanks to its dense multi-wavelength coverage, J1030 represents a legacy field for the study of large-scale structures around distant accreting supermassive black holes. Using a likelihood ratio analysis, we associate multi-band counterparts for 252 (98.4%) of the 256 Chandra sources, with an estimated reliability of 95%. Finally, we compute the cumulative number of sources in each X-ray band, finding that they are in general agreement with the results from the Chandra Deep Fields., Comment: A&A in press, 20 pages, 15 figures. We present spectroscopic observations obtained at the {\it Large Binocular Telescope} in the field of the cluster XLSSJ0223-0436 at $z=1.22$. We confirm 12 spheroids cluster members and determine stellar velocity dispersion for 7 of them. We combine these data with those in the literature for clusters RXJ0848+4453 at $z=1.27$ (8 galaxies) and XMMJ2235-2557 at $z=1.39$ (7 galaxies) to determine the Fundamental Plane of cluster spheroids. We find that the FP at $z\sim1.3$ is offset and { rotated ($\sim3\sigma$)} with respect to the local FP. The offset corresponds to a mean evolution $\Delta$\rm{log}(M$_{dyn}$/L$_B$)=(-0.5$\pm$0.1)$z$. High-redshift galaxies follow a steeper mass-dependent M$_{dyn}$/L$_B$-M$_{dyn}$ relation than local ones. Assuming $\Delta$ log$(M_{dyn}/L_B)$=$\Delta$ log$(M^*/L_B)$, higher-mass galaxies (log(M$_{dyn}$/M$_\odot$)$\geq$11.5) have a higher-formation redshift ($z_f\geq$6.5) than lower-mass ones ($z_f\leq$2 for log(M$_{dyn}$/M$_\odot$$\leq$10)), with a median $z_f\simeq2.5$ for the whole sample. Also, galaxies with higher stellar mass density host stellar populations formed earlier than those in lower density galaxies. At fixed IMF, M$_{dyn}$/M$^*$ varies systematically with mass and mass density. It follows that the evolution of the stellar populations (M$^*/L_B$) accounts for the observed evolution of M$_{dyn}/L_B$ for M$_{dyn}$$>10^{11}$ M$_\odot$ galaxies, while accounts for $\sim$85\% of the evolution at M$_{dyn}$$<10^{11}$ M$_\odot$. We find no evidence in favour of structural evolution of individual galaxies, while we find evidences that spheroids later added to the population account for the observed discrepancy at masses $<10^{11}$ M$_\odot$. We present the analysis, based on spectra collected at the Large Binocular Telescope, of the stellar populations in seven spheroidal galaxies in the cluster XLSSJ0223 at $z$$\sim$1.22. The aim is to constrain the epoch of their formation and their star formation history. Using absorption line strenghts and full spectral fitting, we derive for the stellar populations of the seven spheroids a median age =2.4$\pm$0.6 Gyr, corresponding to a median formation redshift $<$$z_f$$>$$\sim2.6_{-0.5}^{+0.7}$ (lookback time = 11$_{-1.0}^{+0.6}$ Gyr). We find a significant scatter in age, showing that massive spheroids, at least in our targeted cluster, are not coeval. The median metallicity is [Z/H]=0.09$\pm$0.16, as for early-types in clusters at 0$<$$z$<0.9. This lack of evolution of [Z/H] over the range 0$<$$z$$<$1.3, corresponding to the last 9 billions years, suggests that no significant additional star formation and chemical enrichment are required for cluster spheroids to reach the present-day population. We do not detect significant correlation between age and velocity dispersion $\sigma_e$, or dynamical mass M$_{dyn}$, or effective stellar mass density $\Sigma_e$. On the contrary, the metallicity [Z/H] of the seven spheroids is correlated to their dynamical mass M$_{dyn}$, according to a relation similar to the one for local spheroids. [Z/H] is also anticorrelated to stellar mass density $\Sigma_e$ because of the anticorrelation between M$_{dyn}$ and $\Sigma_e$. Therefore, the basic trends observed in the local universe were already established at $z\sim1.3$, i.e. more massive spheroids are more metal rich, have lower stellar mass density and tend to be older than lower-mass galaxies., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables, published on MNRAS

We present spatially resolved emission diagnostics for eight $z\sim0.9$ galaxies that demonstrate extended low ionization emission-line regions (LIERs) over kpc scales. Eight candidates are selected based on their spatial extent and emission line fluxes from slitless spectroscopic observations with the HST/WFC3 G141 and G800L grisms in the well-studied GOODS survey fields. Five of the candidates (62.5%) are matched to X-ray counterparts in the \textit{Chandra X-Ray Observatory} Deep Fields. We modify the traditional Baldwin-Philips-Terlevich (BPT) emission line diagnostic diagram to use [SII]/(H$\alpha$+[NII]) instead of [NII]/H$\alpha$ to overcome the blending of [NII] and H$\alpha$+[NII] in the low resolution slitless grism spectra. We construct emission line ratio maps and place the individual pixels in the modified BPT. The extended LINER-like emission present in all of our candidates, coupled with X-Ray properties consistent with star-forming galaxies and weak [OIII]$\lambda$5007\AA\ detections, is inconsistent with purely nuclear sources (LINERs) driven by active galactic nuclei. While recent ground-based integral field unit spectroscopic surveys have revealed significant evidence for diffuse LINER-like emission in galaxies within the local universe $(z\sim0.04)$, this work provides the first evidence for the non-AGN origin of LINER-like emission out to high redshifts., Comment: 11 pages, 1 table, 6 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysics Journal (ApJ)

We compared the properties of 56 elliptical galaxies selected from three clusters at $1.2 2\times 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$) and large (R$_e > 4-5$ kpc) ellipticals with respect to the cluster. Nonetheless, at $M*<2\times 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$, the two populations are similar. The size-mass relation of ellipticals at z~1.3 defines two different regimes, above and below a transition mass $m_t\sim 2-3\times10^{10}$ M$_\odot$: at lower masses the relation is nearly flat (R$_e\propto M_*^{-0.1\pm 0.2}$), the mean radius is constant at ~1 kpc and $\Sigma_{Re}\sim \Sigma_{1kpc}$ while, at larger masses, the relation is R$_e\propto M*^{0.64\pm0.09}$. The transition mass marks the mass at which galaxies reach the maximum $\Sigma_{Re}$. Also the $\Sigma_{1kpc}$-mass relation follows two different regimes, $\Sigma_{1kpc}\propto M*^{0.64\ >m_t}_{1.07\

We present the Spitzer IRAC/MUSYC Public Legacy Survey in the Extended CDF-South (SIMPLE), which consists of deep IRAC observations covering the ~1,600 arcmin^2 area surrounding GOODS-S. The limiting magnitudes of the SIMPLE IRAC mosaics typically are 23.8, 23.6, 21.9, and 21.7, at 3.6 um, 4.5 um, 5.8 um, and 8.0 um, respectively (5-sigma total point source magnitudes in AB). The SIMPLE IRAC images are combined with the 10'x15' GOODS IRAC mosaics in the center. We give detailed descriptions of the observations, data reduction, and properties of the final images, as well as the detection and photometry methods used to build a catalog. Using published optical and near-infrared data from the Multiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile (MUSYC), we construct an IRAC-selected catalog, containing photometry in UBVRIz'JHK, [3.6 um], [4.5 um], [5.8 um], and [8.0 um]. The catalog contains 43,782 sources with S/N > 5 at 3.6 um, 19,993 of which have 13-band photometry. We compare this catalog to the publicly available MUSYC and FIREWORKS catalogs and discuss the differences. Using a high signal-to-noise sub-sample of 3,391 sources with ([3.6] + [4.5])/2 < 21.2, we investigate the star formation rate history of massive galaxies out to z ~ 1.8. We find that at z ~ 1.8 at least 30% +/-7% of the most massive galaxies (Mstar > 10^11 Msol) are passively evolving, in agreement with earlier results from surveys covering less area., Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures

We present MIPS 24 micron observations of the Hubble Deep Field South taken with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The resulting image is 254 arcmin^2 in size and has a sensitivity ranging between ~12 to ~30 microJy rms, with a median sensitivity of ~20 microJy rms. A total of 495 sources have been cataloged with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 5 sigma. The source catalog is presented as well as source counts which have been corrected for completeness and flux boosting. The IR sources are then combined with MUSYC optical/NIR and ATHDFS radio observations to obtain redshifts and radio flux densities of the sample. We use the IR/radio flux density ratio (q_24) to explore the IR-radio correlation for this IR sample and find q_24 = 0.71 +- 0.31 for sources detected in both IR and radio. The results are extended by stacking IR sources not detected in the radio observations and we derive an average q_24 for redshift bins between 0 < z < 2.5. We find the high redshift (z > 1) sources have an average q_{24} ratio which is better fit by local LIRG SEDs rather than local ULIRG SEDs, indicating that high redshift ULIRGs differ in their IR/radio properties. So ULIRGs at high redshift have SEDs different from those found locally. Infrared faint radio sources are examined, and while nine radio sources do not have a MIPS detection and are therefore radio-loud AGN, only one radio source has an extreme IRAC 3.6 micron to radio flux density ratio indicating it is a radio-loud AGN at z > 1., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

With a complete, mass-selected sample of quiescent galaxies from the NEWFIRM Medium-Band Survey (NMBS), we study the stellar populations of the oldest and most massive galaxies (>10^11 Msun) to high redshift. The sample includes 570 quiescent galaxies selected based on their extinction-corrected U-V colors out to z=2.2, with accurate photometric redshifts, sigma_z/(1+z)~2%, and rest-frame colors, sigma_U-V~0.06 mag. We measure an increase in the intrinsic scatter of the rest-frame U-V colors of quiescent galaxies with redshift. This scatter in color arises from the spread in ages of the quiescent galaxies, where we see both relatively quiescent red, old galaxies and quiescent blue, younger galaxies towards higher redshift. The trends between color and age are consistent with the observed composite rest-frame spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these galaxies. The composite SEDs of the reddest and bluest quiescent galaxies are fundamentally different, with remarkably well-defined 4000A- and Balmer-breaks, respectively. Some of the quiescent galaxies may be up to 4 times older than the average age- and up to the age of the universe, if the assumption of solar metallicity is correct. By matching the scatter predicted by models that include growth of the red sequence by the transformation of blue galaxies to the observed intrinsic scatter, the data indicate that most early-type galaxies formed their stars at high redshift with a burst of star formation prior to migrating to the red sequence. The observed U-V color evolution with redshift is weaker than passive evolution predicts; possible mechanisms to slow the color evolution include increasing amounts of dust in quiescent galaxies towards higher redshift, red mergers at z<1, and a frosting of relatively young stars from star formation at later times., Comment: 20 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We select 25,000 galaxies from the NEWFIRM Medium Band Survey (NMBS) to study the rest-frame U-V color distribution of galaxies at 0 < z < 2.5. The five unique NIR filters of the NMBS enable the precise measurement of photometric redshifts and rest-frame colors for 9,900 galaxies at 1 < z < 2.5. The rest-frame U-V color distribution at all z<~2.5 is bimodal, with a red peak, a blue peak, and a population of galaxies in between (the green valley). Model fits to the optical-NIR SEDs and the distribution of MIPS-detected galaxies indicate that the colors of galaxies in the green valley are determined largely by the amount of reddening by dust. This result does not support the simplest interpretation of green valley objects as a transition from blue star-forming to red quiescent galaxies. We show that correcting the rest-frame colors for dust reddening allows a remarkably clean separation between the red and blue sequences up to z~2.5. Our study confirms that dusty starburst galaxies can contribute a significant fraction to red sequence samples selected on the basis of a single rest-frame color (i.e. U-V), so extra care must be taken if samples of truly "red and dead" galaxies are desired. We study the relation between size and star formation activity in a complete sample of 225 massive (M > 5 x 10^10 Msun) galaxies at 1.5

We describe the results of an extremely deep, 0.28 deg^2 survey for z = 3.1 Ly-alpha emission-line galaxies in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. By using a narrow-band 5000 Anstrom filter and complementary broadband photometry from the MUSYC survey, we identify a statistically complete sample of 162 galaxies with monochromatic fluxes brighter than 1.5 x 10^-17 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 and observers frame equivalent widths greater than 80 Angstroms. We show that the equivalent width distribution of these objects follows an exponential with a rest-frame scale length of w_0 = 76 +/- 10 Angstroms. In addition, we show that in the emission line, the luminosity function of Ly-alpha galaxies has a faint-end power-law slope of alpha = -1.49 +/- 0.4, a bright-end cutoff of log L^* = 42.64 +/- 0.2, and a space density above our detection thresholds of 1.46 +/- 0.12 x 10^-3 h70^3 galaxies Mpc^-3. Finally, by comparing the emission-line and continuum properties of the LAEs, we show that the star-formation rates derived from Ly-alpha are ~3 times lower than those inferred from the rest-frame UV continuum. We use this offset to deduce the existence of a small amount of internal extinction within the host galaxies. This extinction, coupled with the lack of extremely-high equivalent width emitters, argues that these galaxies are not primordial Pop III objects, though they are young and relatively chemically unevolved., Comment: 45 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Using the deep multi-wavelength MUSYC, GOODS, and FIRES surveys we construct a stellar mass-limited sample of galaxies at 210^11 Solar masses distributed over four independent fields with a total area of almost 400 sq arcmin. The mean number density of massive galaxies in this redshift range is (2.2+-0.6) x 10^-4 Mpc^-3. We present median values and 25th and 75th percentiles for the distributions of observed R mags, observed J-K colors, and rest-frame UV continuum slopes, M/L(V) ratios, and U-V colors. The galaxies show a large range in all these properties. The ``median galaxy'' is faint in the observer's optical (R=25.9), red in the observed near-IR (J-K=2.48), has a rest-frame UV spectrum which is relatively flat (beta=-0.4), and rest-frame optical colors resembling those of nearby spiral galaxies (U-V=0.62). We determine which galaxies would be selected as Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) or Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs, having J-K>2.3) in this mass-limited sample. By number DRGs make up 69% of the sample and LBGs 20%, with a small amount of overlap. By mass DRGs make up 77% and LBGs 17%. We present high resolution Halpha rotation curves of 4 late-type dwarf galaxies and 2 low surface brightness galaxies (LSB) for which accurate HI rotation curves are available from the literature. Observations are carried out at Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). For LSB F583-1 an innovative dispersing element was used, the Volume Phase Holographic (VPH) with a dispersion of about 0.35 A/pxl. We find good agreement between the Halpha data and the HI observations and conclude that the HI data for these galaxies suffer very little from beam smearing. We show that the optical rotation curves of these dark matter dominated galaxies are best fitted by the Burkert profile. In the centers of galaxies, where the N-body simulations predict cuspy cores and fast rising rotation curves, our data seem to be in better agreement with the presence of soft cores., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ with minor changes required
