Forest management can have major impacts on the dynamic of ecological communities, including shifts in reproduction and survival strategies in newly recruited individuals. This study aims to predict the probability of presence of saplings of various species in managed forests in the Sudanian domain of Senegal based on their functional traits. Data on functional traits and the main commercial and domestic uses of twenty high-socio-economic value species were collected, along with their presence-absence, in 12, 832 plots from twenty sites in Senegal's savannahs spanning four different types of forest management, including unmanaged forests, old managed forests, recently managed forests, and community reserve forests. Mixed logistic regression models were used to predict whether high-value species would be present in different forest management types, depending on their main uses, and regeneration, growth and reproduction functional traits. We hypothesised that forest management would favour species with more efficient colonising and competitive abilities, particularly at high levels of disturbance. Our findings demonstrated that unmanaged forests were more likely to host high-value species, regardless of their functional traits and main uses. These protected forests also hosted the greatest variety of regeneration functional traits, heights and uses. Old managed forests were more likely to host high-value species compared to recently managed and community reserve forests. Moreover, high-value species capable of vegetative regeneration and those with low maximum height were more likely to occur in all types of forests, but this trend was more pronounced under higher management and disturbance intensities. This study highlights that the availability of forest products can be optimised by encouraging management strategies that promote a diversity of functional traits rather than the selective harvesting of certain high-value species. Additionally, the temporal variation in the responses of tree species could be beneficial for forest management, with more diverse values of functional traits and more high-value species being present in older managed forests relative to newly managed forests. These results indicate that it is essential to promote forest resilience after management by protecting high-value species that have the potential to restore forest functional composition over time in managed forests.

Purpose: The adoption of robotic-assisted total hip arthroplasty (THA) is increasingly widespread, yet its influence on outcomes in outpatient surgery remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate whether robotic assistance reduces the rate of 90-day postoperative events in patients undergoing outpatient THA, compared to those in inpatient procedures. Methods: This historical-prospective cohort study analyzed 706 primary THA cases performed between January 2017 and January 2023 by three senior surgeons. Patients were grouped into outpatient (n = 132) and inpatient (n = 576) cohorts. From December 2019, robotic-assisted THA using the MAKO™ system was implemented. Propensity score matching was used to minimize baseline differences between groups. The primary outcome was the occurrence of any event within 90 days post-surgery, including readmissions, reoperations, and other complications. Secondary outcomes included functional scores, length of hospital stay, and intraoperative factors such as blood loss and Operative Room (OR) time. Results: No significant differences were found between inpatient and outpatient groups in terms of gender, age, BMI, ASA score, or surgeon. The 90-day event rates were similar between the two groups (8.59% vs. 9.38%, p > 0.999). However, outpatient THA was associated with lower blood loss (p = 0.02) and shorter hospital stays (p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis identified prolonged OR time (> 2 h), BMI ≥ 25, and manual surgical techniques as significant risk factors for 90-day events. Robotic-assisted surgery, although not statistically significant (p = 0.105), showed a trend towards reducing complications in outpatient THA. Conclusion: Outpatient THA is a safe alternative to inpatient surgery, with no significant difference in 90-day postoperative events. Robotic-assisted surgery appears to reduce complications, particularly in the outpatient setting, and may optimize outpatient care pathways. Introduction: Ligament balancing is essential to the functional outcome of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The optimal method of alignment remains a controversial issue. The primary objective was to compare the clinical outcomes of TKA between functional and adjusted mechanical alignment techniques. The secondary objectives were to compare bone resection, robotic alignment, and radiological assessment. Materials and methods: This was a retrospective case-control series comparing TKA performed with functional alignment (FA) and adjusted mechanical alignment (aMA). Sixty-four FA subjects were matched with 64 aMA controls. These two groups were matched for age, gender, body mass index (BMI), surgeon, and type of frontal deformity. Both surgical procedures were performed using the MAKO® haptic robotic system. Functional scores (Forgotten Joint Score (FJS), Knee Society Score (KSS), and Oxford Knee Score (OKS)) were measured at the final postoperative follow-up. A radiographic evaluation was performed at the same time. Results: Mean FJS were respectively 63.4 ± 25.1 [0–100] and 51.2 ± 31.8 [0–100] in FA versus aMA group (p = 0.034). Mean OKS were respectively 40.8 ± 6.3 [21–48] and 34.9 ± 11.8 [3–48] in FA versus aMA group (p = 0.027). Mean KSS were respectively 184.9 ± 17.0 [126–200] and 175.6 ± 23.1 [102–200] in FA versus aMA group (p = 0.02). The main residual symptom was “none” for 73.0% versus 57.8%, “instability” for 6.4% versus 21.9%, “Pain” for 19.1% versus 12.5%, and “effusion” for 1.6% and 7.8% respectively for FA and aMA group (p = 0.016). There were 4 complications in the FA group versus 5 in the aMA group (p > 0.999). Mean postoperative hip-knee-ankle (HKA) robotic assessment were respectively 177.3° ± 2.0 [172–180] and 178.2° ± 2.0 [173–180] for FA and aMA group (p = 0.018). Rural populations around the world rely on small-scale farming and other uses of land and natural resources, which are often governed by customary, traditional, and indigenous systems of common property. In recent years, large-scale land acquisitions have drastically expanded; it is unclear whether the commons are a preferential target of these acquisitions. Here we argue that the contemporary global “land rush” could be happening at the expense of common-property systems around the world. While there is evidence that common-property systems have developed traditional institutions of resource governance that make them robust with respect to endogenous forces (e.g., uses by community members), it is less clear how vulnerable these arrangements are to exogenous drivers of globalization and expansion of transnational land investments. In common-property systems, farmers and local users may be unable to defend their customary rights and successfully compete with external actors. We define the notion of “commons grabbing” and report on an exploratory study that applied meta-analytical methods, drawing from the recent literature on large-scale land acquisitions and land grabbing. Informed by political economy and political ecology approaches, we coded selected cases on the basis of acquisition mechanisms, claims and property rights, changes in production system, and coercive dynamics, and explored the interactions between the different variables using association tests and qualitative comparative analysis. We found that the majority of the cases included in this analysis (44 of 56) could be examples of commons grabbing.
