Ancient studies on harbours cities (emporia) have recently emphasized how regional economic networks have been created between imperial cities across the Mediterranean. In the western part, such examples are Cadix, Narbonne, Ostia or Puteoli. In the East, Alexandria and Ephesus are among the main nodes of this trade network. My PhD dissertation seeks to highlight how trade was organised in the city Ephesus during the imperial period. With local sources such as weights and inscriptions, I study administrative, commercial and fiscal aspects of trade in the capital of the province of Asia. What are the administrative structures that support the local, ephesian trade? How business relationships have been developed within or through Ephesus? Could the Roman state rely on the local administration in matters such as customs collection? Could Ephesian trade be connected with the Roman business network and thus further the interests of roman aristocrats living in the Urbs? These issues are at stake in this work., Ces dernières années, un courant de recherche historique s’est intéressé au rôle joué par les grands « ports de commerce » (emporia) à l’époque impériale, dans les réseaux d’échanges commerciaux, tissés entre les villes du bassin méditerranéen. En Occident, les villes de Cadix, Narbonne, Ostie ou Pouzzoles sont reconnues à ce titre. En Orient, Alexandrie ainsi qu’Éphèse (Strabon XIV 1 26) prétendent également à ce statut. Dans ce contexte, mes recherches de thèse visent à éclairer le fonctionnement des échanges à Éphèse afin de mieux comprendre le rôle économique et commercial que remplit cette ville, dès le Ier s. ap. J.-C., dans l’Orient égéen. À partir de sources locales telles que des inscriptions et des poids, ma thèse examine les aspects administratifs, commerciaux et fiscaux des échanges animant la capitale de la province d’Asie. À la lumière des réalités archéologiques et les témoignages historiques concernant les acteurs, les lieux et les outils de l’échange et sachant qu’Éphèse est également le siège de l’administration provinciale, comment la ville administre-t-elle ses places de commerce ? Quels rapports peut-on observer entre les instances centrales romaines et l’administration locale ? Quels acteurs sont impliqués dans les relations commerciales attestées en ville ? Y décèle-t-on des réseaux d’affaires, capables de relier la capitale de province aux intérêts des autres citoyens de l’Empire romain ? The past ten years have been particularly prolific for research in Boeotian epigraphy: excavations and museum work carried out by the ephoreias, along with the activities of international projects such as the Boeotia Project, have yielded many exciting new documents and generated a very dynamic scholarly production. Epigraphy is therefore particularly well served in Boeotia, as the prominent place given to inscriptions in the recently refurbished museums of Chaironeia and, in particularly, Schimatari — and, no doubt, in the future new museum of Thebes too — exemplifies further. The present synopsis cannot cover the entirety of scholarship produced over the past ten years, but it is hoped that it provides a fair overview. Over the past ten years, the regions of Euboea, Phokis and Lokris have yielded epigraphic material that is not only abundant, but also very varied - whether viewed in chronological, thematic or archaeological terms. All three regions have, for example, produced new manumission records, including the very first for the island of Euboea. The use of inscriptions has made crucial contributions to the identification of several Euboean sanctuaries, such as that of Apollo Selinaios, in the territory of Histiaia, that of Artemis Amarysia, near Amarynthos, and Apollo Delios at Zarex. The sanctuary located at the top of the acropolis of Eretria is now understood to be a sanctuary of Athena, thanks to an inscribed statuette of a lion. The region of Phokis in particular has yielded very diverse epigraphy. Once again, inscriptions associated with sanctuaries stand out, with, for example, a dedication to Pan and the Nymphs from a cave on Mount Parnassos, inscriptions from the oracular sanctuary of Apollo at Abai and from two sanctuaries of Artemis at Antikyra. Scholars working on Roman Phokis will welcome the publication of several new inscriptions, particularly a document from Elateia mentioning an Aetolarch, an honorific inscription from Antikyra, which provides the first occurrence in central Greece for a dekaprotos and, from Ambryssos, a statue base commemorating the emperor Gallienus
