Abstract Plants cope with the environment by displaying large phenotypic variation. Two spectra of global plant form and function have been identified: a size spectrum from small to tall species with increasing stem tissue density, leaf size, and seed mass; a leaf economics spectrum reflecting slow to fast returns on investments in leaf nutrients and carbon. When species assemble to communities it is assumed that these spectra are filtered by the environment to produce community level functional composition. It is unknown what are the main drivers for community functional composition in a large area such as Amazonia. We use 13 functional traits, including wood density, seed mass, leaf characteristics, breeding system, nectar production, fruit type, and root characteristics of 812 tree genera (5211 species), and find that they describe two main axes found at the global scale. At community level, the first axis captures not only the ‘fast-slow spectrum’, but also most size-related traits. Climate and disturbance explain a minor part of this variance compared to soil fertility. Forests on poor soils differ largely in terms of trait values from those on rich soils. Trait composition and soil fertility exert a strong influence on forest functioning: biomass and relative biomass production.

Abstract We describe the geographical variation in tree species composition across Amazonian forests and show how environmental conditions are associated with species turnover. Our analyses are based on 2023 forest inventory plots (1 ha) that provide abundance data for a total of 5188 tree species. Within-plot species composition reflected both local environmental conditions (especially soil nutrients and hydrology) and geographical regions. A broader-scale view of species turnover was obtained by interpolating the relative tree species abundances over Amazonia into 47,441 0.1-degree grid cells. Two main dimensions of spatial change in tree species composition were identified. The first was a gradient between western Amazonia at the Andean forelands (with young geology and relatively nutrient-rich soils) and central–eastern Amazonia associated with the Guiana and Brazilian Shields (with more ancient geology and poor soils). The second gradient was between the wet forests of the northwest and the drier forests in southern Amazonia. Isolines linking cells of similar composition crossed major Amazonian rivers, suggesting that tree species distributions are not limited by rivers. Even though some areas of relatively sharp species turnover were identified, mostly the tree species composition changed gradually over large extents, which does not support delimiting clear discrete biogeographic regions within Amazonia.

Abstract Using 2.046 botanically-inventoried tree plots across the largest tropical forest on Earth, we mapped tree species-diversity and tree species-richness at 0.1-degree resolution, and investigated drivers for diversity and richness. Using only location, stratified by forest type, as predictor, our spatial model, to the best of our knowledge, provides the most accurate map of tree diversity in Amazonia to date, explaining approximately 70% of the tree diversity and species-richness. Large soil-forest combinations determine a significant percentage of the variation in tree species-richness and tree alpha-diversity in Amazonian forest-plots. We suggest that the size and fragmentation of these systems drive their large-scale diversity patterns and hence local diversity. A model not using location but cumulative water deficit, tree density, and temperature seasonality explains 47% of the tree species-richness in the terra-firme forest in Amazonia. Over large areas across Amazonia, residuals of this relationship are small and poorly spatially structured, suggesting that much of the residual variation may be local. The Guyana Shield area has consistently negative residuals, showing that this area has lower tree species-richness than expected by our models. We provide extensive plot meta-data, including tree density, tree alpha-diversity and tree species-richness results and gridded maps at 0.1-degree resolution.

Abstract We evaluated the landscape of the North and Northwest of Rio de Janeiro, determining changes in forest cover by phytophysiognomy using collection 6 of MapBiomas (1985-2020). We worked in the R environment and QGIS. Among the phytophysiognomies, the Lowland forests showed the greatest area loss until 1985 (93%), becoming highly fragmented and isolated in the landscape. Between 1985 and 2020 the loss of forest was reduced. However, this result is related to the balance of secondary vegetation increase that covers up the losses of mature vegetation, with risks to biodiversity. The main driver of vegetation loss was agriculture, and currently less than 8% of the vegetation is protected. The procrastination in the establishment of conservation units and restoration of permanent protection areas will have serious negative consequences for the conservation of the vegetation in this region.

Abstract In a time of rapid global change, the question of what determines patterns in species abundance distribution remains a priority for understanding the complex dynamics of ecosystems. The constrained maximization of information entropy provides a framework for the understanding of such complex systems dynamics by a quantitative analysis of important constraints via predictions using least biased probability distributions. We apply it to over two thousand hectares of Amazonian tree inventories across seven forest types and thirteen functional traits, representing major global axes of plant strategies. Results show that constraints formed by regional relative abundances of genera explain eight times more of local relative abundances than constraints based on directional selection for specific functional traits, although the latter does show clear signals of environmental dependency. These results provide a quantitative insight by inference from large-scale data using cross-disciplinary methods, furthering our understanding of ecological dynamics.

Monodominance is unusual in the tropics when compared to the high diversity of tropical forests. Peltogyne gracilipes (Leguminosae) is a deciduous tree species that forms monodominant forests in the Brazilian Northern Amazon region. Initial research confirmed that P. gracilipes monodominance was associated with higher soil magnesium content, while recent studies have indicated a larger number of variables, suggesting a more complex hydro-edaphic habitat. As such, the present study aimed to describe the hydro-edaphic habitat (pedoenvironment) where P. gracilipes is monodominant. Edaphic and topographic variables (drainage proxy) were used in a forest inventory conducted in 129 sampling plots. Trees with a stem diameter greater than 10 cm were analyzed. Aboveground biomass was used as a descriptive variable of the different habitats in the study area. A total of 3041 individuals were sampled (298 P. gracilipes). Abstract The inselberg vegetation, in general, occurs in patches that vary in size, shape, number of plant species and are surrounded by a bare rock. The present study evaluated the species composition, structural analysis, and species-area relationships of vegetation patches on a neotropical inselberg in Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil. A total of 69 vascular plant species, from 31 families, were sampled in 84 vegetation patches varying in area from 0.02 to 500 m2, totaling 0.33 ha. Fabaceae and Cactaceae were the most representative families. Vellozia plicata and Selaginella sellowii presented the highest relative frequencies, relative dominances and importance values and were the most successful in the colonization of the studied rocky outcrop. A linear regression showed a positive correlation between patch size and species richness. Phanerophytes were the predominant life-form, with small patches being less rich in species and dominated by Selaginella mats. Our results suggest that the vegetation patches on the “Morro do Itaoca” inselberg currently represent a refuge against fire and other anthropogenic disturbances for many typical species of the surrounding matrix. In addition, the locality is home to endemic and endangered species, which reinforces its importance for conservation actions.

The effect of the removal of plant litter on photosynthetic variables (gas exchanges, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and content of photosynthetic pigments) of the tropical species Xylopia sericea A. St.-Hil. and Siparuna guianensis Aubl. was evaluated in an abandoned plantation of eucalypt (Corymbia citriodora (Hook.) K.D. Hill & L.A.S. Johnson (Myrtaceae)). The study was conducted at the União Biological Reserve, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil during the rainy and dry periods, after five years of litter removal. The removal of plant litter did not influence the ecophysiological responses of the species. There was however significant seasonal variation. During the dry period, intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), transpiration (E), and stomatal conductance (gs) were decreased, while intrinsic efficiency of water use (IWUE), non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), and carotenoid values increased, suggesting a protective strategy against stress. Nevertheless, the values for Fv/Fm (maximum quantum efficiency) and Fm/Fo (ratio of fluorescence yields for open and closed states) indicated that even during the dry period there was no reduction in photochemical activity in these species. Only S. guianensis exhibited a reduced net photosynthetic rate (A) during the dry period. The data indicated that X. sericea was photosynthetically more efficient under conditions of low water availability and that a 5-year period of plant litter removal failed to produce differences in ecophysiological processes in the species analyzed.

O efeito da remoção da serapilheira sobre as variáveis do processo fotossintético (trocas gasosas, fluorescência da clorofila a, e conteúdo de pigmentos fotossintéticos) das espécies tropicais Xylopia sericea A. St.-Hil. e Siparuna guianensis Aubl. foi avaliado em um plantio abandonado de eucalipto (Corymbia citriodora (Hook.) K.D.Hill & L.A.S.Johnson (Myrtaceae)) durante os períodos chuvoso e seco, após 5 anos de remoção da serapilheira, na Reserva Biológica União, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. A remoção da serapilheira não influenciou as respostas ecofisiológicas das espécies. Entretanto, significativa variação sazonal foi verificada. Durante o período seco, a concentração intercelular de CO2 (Ci ), a transpiração (E), e a condutância estomática (gs ) apresentaram redução nos valores, enquanto a eficiência intrínseca no uso da água (EIUA), a dissipação não-fotoquímica (NPQ) e os carotenoides aumentaram, resultado que sugere uma estratégia protetora contra estresse. No entanto, os valores de Fv /Fm (rendimento quântico máximo) e Fm /Fo (taxa de rendimento da fluorescência pelos estados aberto e fechado) indicam que, mesmo durante o período seco, não houve redução fotoquímica nas espécies. Apenas S. guianensis apresentou redução nos valores da taxa de fotossíntese líquida (A) durante o período seco. Os dados sugerem que X. sericea é fotossinteticamente mais eficiente sob condições de baixa disponibilidade de água e que a remoção da serapilheira por um período de 5 anos não promove diferenças nos processos ecofisiológicos das espécies analisadas.

The waterlogging of soils creates selective environments for plant species. The frequency and duration of flooding influence the responses to ecological processes, determining the structure and floristic composition of vegetation formations. We investigated the relationship between floristic composition and environmental heterogeneity of native field, one physiognomic type found interspersed with semideciduous forest in the plains in the northern part of the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, which is characterized by varying degrees of waterlogging. Our results indicate that the differentiation of physiognomic types of native field is related to the frequency and duration of waterlogging to which each is subjected, resulting in a somewhat shared flora, dominated by phanerophytes. Flooding was also found to account for differences between the areas analyzed in terms of the soil pH, which ranged from strongly acid to extremely acid. The geographic proximity between the native field studied and areas of muçununga (or mussununga, a coastal forest ecosystem associated with the Atlantic Forest) did not increase the floristic similarity between the two.

Apesar de possuírem grande importância ao nível de conservação ambiental, existe no Brasil uma acentuada escassez de trabalhos relacionados às invasões biológicas em ambientes terrestres. As restingas, sobretudo, são ambientes extremamente susceptíveis a este tipo de ameaça. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a ocorrência e a estrutura populacional da espécie exótica Calotropis procera na Restinga do Xexé, Farol de São Thomé, Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ. Uma varredura que abrangeu uma área de 126 ha (1400m x 900m) foi realizada, sendo amostrado um total de 475 indivíduos, ou seja, uma média de 3,8 indivíduos por hectare. Para a avaliação da distribuição dos indivíduos num gradiente interior-praia, foram alocados três transectos (300m x 10m) nesta direção. A amostragem nos transectos indicou a ocorrência de 28 indivíduos com altura > 50 cm e nenhum com altura < 50 cm, sendo sua ocorrência restrita as áreas com vestígios de perturbação e não tendo sido constatado nenhuma relação com a distância da praia. A ausência de plântulas e jovens na amostragem ao longo dos transectos sugere o rápido desenvolvimento dos indivíduos após a germinação. Os resultados indicaram que Calotropis procera possui grande potencial invasor de áreas perturbadas de restinga. Um plano de ações para seu controle e erradicação deve ser urgentemente implementado pelos órgãos ambientais responsáveis.Although invasive species are one of the main reasons for the loss of biodiversity, in Brazil there is little information about biological invasions in terrestrial ecosystems. Sandy coastal plain forests (restinga) and shrubby vegetation are places extremely susceptible to this kind of threat. The goal of this work was to evaluate the occurrence of the exotic species Calotropis procera in the Restinga do Xexé, Farol de São Tomé, Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, Brazil. A survey covering an area of 126 ha (1400 m x 900 m) was carried out, where a total of 475 individuals were sampled (mean of 3.8 indiv.ha-1). To assess the spatial distribution and population structure of this species, three transects (300 m x 10 m) were created, which were perpendicular to the vegetation gradient from interior to shoreline, and all individuals of C. procera were sampled. A total of 28 individuals > 50 cm tall were sampled, and no individuals < 50 cm tall were found in the three transects. The plants were restricted to areas with vestiges of human disturbance. The absence of seedling samples within the transects is probably related to the fast growth of this species after germination. The results showed that C. procera has a great potential of invading disturbed areas in restinga vegetation. A plan to control and eradicate this species should be considered by the Brazilian environmental agency.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a estrutura diamétrica arbórea de um remanescente de Floresta Atlântica Submontana no Município de Silva Jardim, RJ. Foram utilizadas 20 parcelas de 100 x 5 m, em que todas as árvores com DAP > 5 cm foram amostradas. A estrutura diamétrica foi analisada em toda a comunidade e nas principais populações (determinadas segundo o VI), a partir de histogramas com intervalos de classes definidos pela fórmula de Spiegel. A análise também considerou os grupos sucessionais das espécies (pioneiras: PI; secundárias iniciais: SI; e secundárias tardias: ST). As curvas (J-reverso) e valores do quociente "q" indicaram ausência de problemas de regeneração das principais populações, a maioria de espécies SI. Entretanto, foi observada tendência de saída de algumas das principais populações de ST (ex. Plathymenia foliolosa e Euterpe edulis), paralelamente à entrada de outras SI. Os resultados complementam as análises florísticas desenvolvidas anteriormente no remanescente, o que indica que a estrutura diamétrica também foi alterada pela fragmentação e pelas perturbações antrópicas pretéritas. Ações coibindo novas perturbações e o enriquecimento através do plantio de mudas das espécies mais afetadas são urgentes, visando à recuperação da qualidade ambiental desse remanescente.This work analyses the tree diametric structure of a Sub-montane Atlantic Forest remnant in Silva Jardim-RJ, Brazil. Twenty 100 m x 5 m plots were established, and all trees with DBH > 5 cm were surveyed. The diametric structure was analyzed for the entire community and its main populations (ordered according to the importance value - VI), using diameter class histograms defined by Spiegel's formula. Species were also grouped within successional categories (Pi: pioneer; SI: early secondary; ST: late secondary). The diametric curves (J-reverse shape) and values of Liocourt's 'q' quotient suggested problems involving lack of regeneration for the main populations for most of the SI species. However, some ST populations (ex. Plathymenia foliolosa and Euterpe edulis) showed a tendency to disappear from the community in the long term, while other SI species became part of the community. These results strengthen the findings of the floristic survey, also suggesting changes in the diametric structure due to the fragmentation process and past disturbance practices. Actions to guarantee protection to the forest remnant and seedling bank enrichment through planting the most threatened tree species are urgently needed for the recovery of the environmental quality of this remnant.

Estudos florísticos vêm apontando a região da bacia do rio São João, no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, como detentora de uma riqueza e diversidade de espécies arbóreas particularmente altas. Entretanto, tais afirmativas são baseadas em estudos locais, não existindo ainda uma análise de sua flora arbórea em nível regional. A partir da compilação de inventários florísticos e fitossociológicos de 20 trechos de floresta ombrófila de baixada (30-300 m), o presente trabalho aborda a composição, riqueza e heterogeneidade da flora arbórea da bacia do rio São João. A compilação incluiu apenas as árvores com DAP > 2,5 cm, que foram identificadas em nível específico. A amostra da flora arbórea totalizou 460 espécies, 231 gêneros e 62 famílias. Estes números reafirmam que a região é realmente detentora de uma flora arbórea com alta diversidade, inclusive com diversas espécies raras ou vulneráveis à extinção, podendo ser considerada como uma das mais ricas entre as de Floresta Atlântica do Sudeste brasileiro. Análises multivariadas detectaram uma alta heterogeneidade florística entre os fragmentos florestais, contribuindo na elevada riqueza regional encontrada. Os padrões de similaridade sugerem que a principal fonte desta heterogeneidade provém dos diferentes estados de conservação das áreas.Floristic studies have indicated the São João river basin, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, SE Brazil, as containing particularly high tree species richness and diversity. Nevertheless, such statements are based on local studies only since an analysis of the tree flora at a regional level has yet to be produced. This study compiles floristic and phytosociological surveys of 20 patches of low altitude rain forest (30-300 m of elevation) in the São João river basin to produce an analysis of the composition, diversity and heterogeneity of the tree flora. The compilation included only trees with dbh > 2.5 cm that were identified to the species level. The tree-flora sample totaled 460 species, 231 genera and 62 families. These figures confirm that the region actually shelters a tree flora with high species diversity, including many considered rare or vulnerable to extinction, and may be considered one of the richest among the Atlantic Forests of SE Brazil. Multivariate analysis detected high floristic heterogeneity among forest remnants, which contributes to this high regional richness. Patterns of floristic similarity suggest that the main source of this heterogeneity is the difference in conservation status of each patch.

A compreensão da dinâmica da matéria orgânica (MO) nos ecossistemas de Mata Atlântica é necessária para o manejo eficiente e conservação de vegetações nativas. A natureza química das substâncias húmicas (SHs) reflete os processos de gênese e uso do solo e pode ser usada como indicador da qualidade da MO. O objetivo deste estudo foi usar a qualidade da MO como sinalizador do ambiente edáfico em áreas de mata nativa, sobre Gleissolo Háplico Tb distrófico, argissólico e Cambissolo Háplico Tb distrófico, e em plantios abandonados de eucalipto de diferentes idades, sobre Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo distrófico latossólico, localizados na Reserva Biológica União, RJ. Para isso, foram avaliadas as distribuições da MO humificada e os ácidos húmicos do solo por meio de métodos químicos e espectroscópicos, em duas profundidades do solo (0-0,10 e 0,10-0,20 m). Os solos da Reserva Biológica apresentaram fertilidade natural muito baixa, condição esta limitante para o processo de humificação. As SHs representaram, portanto, menos de 50 % do carbono prontamente oxidável, indicando que as substâncias não-húmicas compõem a maior parte da MO; portanto, a serrapilheira tem o papel central na nutrição das plantas e microrganismos. A distribuição relativa das frações que compõem a MO humificada não foi alterada pela cobertura vegetal nem pela classe de solo. Os ácidos húmicos apresentaram natureza química semelhante à normalmente encontrada para os ácidos fúlvicos, e tais características foram expressas no baixo conteúdo de C e nos elevados valores das razões H/C e O/C e da acidez, o que levou à formação de material humificado pouco condensado.A espectroscopia de infravermelho indicou o efeito do tipo de solo e da cobertura vegetal sobre a qualidade química dos ácidos húmicos. O material humificado isolado da Mata Atlântica apresentou maior intensidade de fluorescência, sugerindo maior labilidade e capacidade de ceder elétrons para reações químicas do solo.The organic matter dynamics in Atlantic forest ecosystems must be understood to ensure the efficiency of conservation programs. Chemical characteristics of humic substances are important because they reflect the soil genesis processes and soil management, and can be used as indicator of the organic matter quality. The purpose of this study was to test the organic matter quality as a marker of the soil environment in areas of native Atlantic forest developed on a distrophyc Gleysol and a distrophyc Cambisol and in abandoned plantations of eucalyptus of different ages, at the União Biological Reserve, RJ, Brazil. The distribution of the humified fractions of the soil organic matter and humic acids were evaluated by chemical and spectroscopic methods, in two soil layers (0-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m). Soil fertility of the Biological Reserve was very low, representing a limiting factor for the humification process. Humic substances represented less than 50 % of the oxidized carbon, indicating that most of the organic matter consists of non-humic substances. Consequently, forest litterfall plays a central role in the plant/microorganism nutrition. The relative distribution of the humic fraction was not altered by the plant cover or soil class. The chemical nature of the humic acids was similar to fulvic acids. These characteristics were expressed by a low carbon content, high H/C and O/C ratios and high acidity values which resulted in humified material with low chemical evolution. Infrared spectroscopy indicated the effect of the soil class and plant cover on the chemical quality of the humic acids. The fluorescence intensity of humified material isolated from the Atlantic forest area was high, suggesting higher lability and capacity to release electrons for chemical reactions in the soil.

Neste trabalho, descreveram-se a composição florística e a estrutura do estrato arbóreo de um remanescente de Floresta Ombrófila Densa Submontana (Mata Rio Vermelho) na região Centro-Norte fluminense, comparando-a com outras florestas da região. Foram alocadas oito parcelas de 5 m x 100 m, e todos os indivíduos vivos e mortos com DAP > 5 cm foram amostrados. Ao todo, foram registradas 106 espécies pertencentes a 77 gêneros e 32 famílias. As famílias com maior riqueza de espécies foram Leguminosae (13 espécies) e Lauraceae (8), e as mais abundantes foram Monimiaceae (13% dos indivíduos) e Leguminosae (11%). As espécies mais importantes quanto ao valor de cobertura (VC) foram Siparuna guianensis, Apuleia leiocarpa, Cupania oblongifolia e Machaerium brasiliensis, todas características de áreas secundárias. O índice de diversidade de espécies (H' = 3,91 nats.ind-1) foi próximo ao encontrado em outras florestas secundárias. Os resultados (elevado número de árvores mortas, com lianas, perfilhadas e secundárias iniciais; baixo número de árvores de grande porte e área basal) indicaram que a mata em foco se encontrava perturbada e em fase de regeneração intermediária. Ainda assim, permanecia detentora de considerável riqueza e diversidade florística, com espécies arbóreas ameaçadas de extinção, como Melanoxylon brauna e Dalbergia nigra. Devido à importância ecológica desde remanescente para a manutenção da flora e fauna local e ao avançado processo de fragmentação da região, sugere-se que a Mata Rio Vermelho seja prioritária em programas de conservação e manejo.This work describes the floristic composition and forest structure of a tree community in a Submontane Ombrofilous Dense Atlantic forest (Rio Vermelho Forest) and compares this forest to other remnant forests in the region. Eight 100 m x 5 m plots were allocated and all trees > 5 cm DBH were sampled. A total of 106 species was sampled, distributed in 77 genus and 32 families. The richest families in number of species were Leguminosae (13 species) and Lauraceae (8). Monimiaceae (13% of trees) and Leguminosae (11%) had the highest densities. The most important species (cover value) were Siparuna guianensis, Apuleia leiocarpa, Cupania oblongifolia and Machaerium brasiliensis. These species are common in secondary Atlantic forests. The species diversity (H' = 3,91 nats.ind-1) can be considered within the values found for secondary Atlantic forests. Based on the floristic data and the high values found for standing dead trees, trees supporting lianas, number of multiple stems and number of early secondary species and the low number of large trees, this forest can be classified as a secondary forest in an intermediate regenerating status. However, this forest still has a considerable richness and diversity with some endangered tree species such as Melanoxylon brauna and Dalbergia nigra. Due to its ecological importance for the local flora and fauna and the fragmentation process in the region, this remnant forest should be considered as a priority area for establishment of conservation and management practices.

Este trabalho apresenta a flora de espécies arbóreas e palmeiras na floresta estacional semidecidual na planície aluvial do rio Doce, uma área de cerca de 20.000 ha, a partir de Linhares (ES) até próximo à foz no oceano atlântico. Foram determinadas 408 espécies (27 classificadas em gênero) e 59 famílias, entre arbóreas e palmeiras. Por meio da análise de agrupamento, foi evidenciado que a floresta do rio Doce é muito semelhante floristicamente à floresta estacional dos tabuleiros terciários, que estas se agrupam com as florestas estacionais do rio Doce em MG e que, por sua vez, todas estas se agrupam com as florestas ombrófilas do sul da Bahia, sendo o conjunto nitidamente separado das outras formações ombrófilas costeiras. Foram encontradas dezenas de espécies deocorrência restrita ou pouco frequentes em levantamentos na floresta atlântica, enfatizando a importância da área para conservação da biodiversidade. Pelo fato das matas de cacau na região abrangerem mais de 80% dessa área, sugere-se a delimitação de uma Área de Proteção Ambiental, que permita conciliar o cultivo do cacau com a proteção da biodiversidade.The tree and palm flora was studied in the Atlantic forest of the rio Doce alluvial floodplain, in a 20,000ha area, between Linhares (Espírito Santo State) and the Atlantic Ocean. The floristic survey recorded 408 species and 59 families. Floristic composition was compared to other forests of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro states using cluster analysis. The forest flora of the study area was most similar to that of forests in Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, and Bahia. Dozens of species in the study area are restricted and rare in Atlantic forest; this area deserves special attention for biodiversity conservation. The Brazilian government should pay heed to the biological importance of this area and declare it an Environmental Protection Area, a type of conservation unit where sustained exploitation of resources is legal. We understand that, in practical terms, this sort of conservation unit is not very efficient in conserving natural resources, but it would be a start and might contribute to improved awareness, especially by local farmers and politicians.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a composição florística arbórea de um trecho de Floresta Atlântica submontana na região de Imbaú, Silva Jardim, RJ. Esta região formava um contínuo florestal que foi fragmentado há mais de 50 anos por práticas agropecuárias. Cinco fragmentos foram selecionados e em cada um deles foram alocadas quatro parcelas de 100×5 m. Todas as árvores vivas com DAP > 5 cm foram amostradas e identificadas. No hectare amostrado foram encontradas 161 espécies distribuídas por 39 famílias. A similaridade florística entre os fragmentos foi alta, com índice de Morisita variando de 0,36 a 0,79. As famílias Leguminosae, Lauraceae e Rubiaceae apresentaram a maior riqueza de espécies. A comparação florística com uma floresta madura da região indicou forte decréscimo na riqueza de espécies que, juntamente com a elevada densidade de espécies secundárias iniciais, indicam que estas matas se encontram em estádio sucessional secundário. Analisando a similaridade florística entre a região de Imbaú e outras 17 florestas do Rio de Janeiro, observou-se maior similaridade com as florestas submontanas mais próximas geograficamente. Devido ao avançado processo de fragmentação e à importância ecológica destes fragmentos para a manutenção da flora e fauna, sugere-se que a região de Imbaú deva ser prioritária em programas de conservação e manejo de áreas de Mata Atlântica.This study aimed to evaluate tree floristic composition of the submontane Atlantic Forest in the Imbaú region, Silva Jardim, Rio de Janeiro. About 50 years ago, the forest fragmentation process was begun in this region due to farming practices. Five forest remnants were selected and four plots (100×5 m) were systematically located in each one. All trees with dbh > 5 cm were sampled and identified. In the one-hectare sample area, 161 species in 39 families were sampled. Species similarity was high between fragments (Morisita index ranging from 0.36 to 0.79). The families Leguminosae, Lauraceae and Rubiaceae showed the highest values of species richness. The studied area had a high density of early secondary species and a decrease in canopy species richness when compared to a mature forest nearby. These results indicated characteristics of secondary forests. When compared to 17 forests of Rio de Janeiro State, the Imbaú region showed stronger floristic relationships with submontane forests, especially those geographically closer. Due to its ecological importance for the local flora and fauna, plus the advanced stage of fragmentation in the region, the Imbaú region should be considered as a priority area for adopting conservation and management practices.

Habitat destruction has caused Brazilian coastal lowland semideciduous forests to suffer severe fragmentation. In the state of Rio de Janeiro, especially in the northern region, these fragments are under severe threat of destruction, while data on their floristic diversity and community structure are still lacking. In this study, six secondary forest fragments (henceforth called sites) of coastal lowland semideciduous forests with areas ranging from 13 to 1200 ha were studied. The objective was to evaluate the structure and diversity of trees of these sites and relate them to the conservation status of this region. Five plots of 20 x 20 m were established in each site, totalling a sample area of 1.4 ha and all trees with DBH ≥ 5cm were sampled. The families with the highest species richness were Fabaceae, Sapotaceae, Myrtaceae and Meliaceae. The most abundant species were: Metrodorea nigra, Pseudopiptadenia contorta and Senefeldera verticillata. The richness, evenness and Shannon diversity values ranged from 59 to 89 species, 0.75 to 0.87 and from 2.59 to 3.79 nats.ind-1, respectively. Sites showed high floristic similarity. The tree density values varied from 1410 to 1840 ind.ha-1 and were within the levels expected for semideciduous forest; however, the basal area values (19.8 to 28.0 m2.ha-1) are those usually observed in disturbed forests. Despite being secondary forests, the sites had high species diversity with occurrence of tree species of recognized conservation value. Urgent action must be taken to manage and conserve these forests, such as: (i) forest corridors establish connecting fragments especially using zoochorous tree species, and (ii) use forest enrichment techniques using species that are absent or presently at low density as a result of intensive exploitation in the past.

Metrodorea pubescens é uma árvore comum nas matas do Distrito Federal, ocorrendo em matas mesofíticas (solos calcáreos) e matas de galeria (solos ácidos). Em cada tipo de mata foram coletadas todas as folhas de 15 indivíduos jovens, sendo cinco por classe de altura (5-50, 50-100, e 100-150 cm). As folhas foram separadas em três categorias: novas, maduras e senescentes e depois foram secas e analisados para os seguintes elementos: P, K, Ca, Mg e Al. A concentração dos nutrientes nas folhas não diferiu em relação ao tamanho dos indivíduos. Apenas o alumínio apresentou menores teores nos indivíduos de 5-50 cm. As folhas novas apresentaram maiores teores de P e K. Já o Ca, Mg, e Al foram maiores nas folhas maduras. Há um decréscimo de P da folha madura para folha senescente. As plantas do solo calcáreo apresentaram maiores teores de Ca, menores de K, e valores semelhantes de P, Mg, e Al, quando comparadas com plantas do solo ácido. As diferenças entre as populações talvez possam ser explicadas pelo solo, porém outros fatores como o comportamento fisiológico das plantas devem ser considerados. As plantas do solo ácido podem ter um comportamento calcífugo e as plantas do solo calcáreo um comportamento calcícolo.Metrodorea pubescens is an abundant tree in the forests of the Distrito Federal, occurring in mesophytic forests (on calcareous soils) and in gallery forests (acidic soils). In both forest types all leaves from 15 small individuals from five individuals in each of three height classes (5-50, 50-100, 100-150 cm) were collected. The leaves were separated in three categories; new, mature and senescent, and then dried and analyzed for the following elements: P, K, Ca, Mg and Al. The concetration of nutrientes in the leaves was similar in all height classes, except for al which showed lower concentration in the smallest individuals (5-50 cm). New leaves showed higher concentration of P and K. On the other hand Ca, Mg and Al were higher in the mature leaves. The concentration of P decreased from mature leaves to senescent leaves. The plants from calcareous soil showed higher concentration of Ca and lower concentration of K than plants of acidic soil. The values of P, Mg and Al were similar in both forests. The differences between populations could possibly be explained by soil type, but other factors such as the physiological behavior of plants should also be considered. Plants from the acidic soil can be calcifuge and plants from the calcareous soil can be calcicole.

Neste trabalho foi estudado um cambarazal localizado no pantanal de Poccné, km 94 da Rodovia Transpantaneira. Um total de 1.500m² de área foram amostrados e divididos em três transecções de 10 x 50 m. Todas as plantas com circunferência à altura o solo > 10cm foram mapeadas e medidas para a obtenção dos parâmetros estruturais de densidade relativa, freqüência absoluta e relativa, dominância relativa e índice de valor de importância. Foi amostrado um total de 631 indivíduos, distribuídos entre 15 famílias, 19 gêneros e 23 espécies. Vochysia divergem foi a espécie que apresentou o maior IVI, seguida de Erythroxylum sp. e Aulomyrcia mutabilis. A riqueza florística do cambarazal estudado foi menor que a de áreas de mata amazônica de terra fume, mata atlântica e mata de igapó, sendo semelhante à da caatinga amazônica. Neste trabalhe discutiu-se a hipótese de V. divergens ser uma espécie colonizadora de campos inundáveis no pantanal de Poconé e as fases de ocupação e formação de um cambarazal.A study was made of a "cambarazal" located in the municipality of Pocone, State of Mato Grosso, km 94 of the Transpantaneira Road. An area of 1.500m² was sampled and divided in three transects of 10 x 50m. All trees with circumference at soil level > 10cm were measured to obtain data on relative density, absolute and relative frequency, relative dominance and importance value. A total of 15 families, 19 genera and 23 species were found. Vochysia divergens was considered to be the most important species followed by Erythroxylum sp. and Aulomyrcia mutabilis. The floristic richness of the "cambarazal" was lower than Amazonian rain forest and Atiantic rain forest but similar to "caatinga" woodland. The supposition that V. divergens is a colonist species of marshes in the Poconé "pantanal" and the phases of the process of occupation and formation of a "cambarazal" were discussed.

ABSTRACT The aims of the present study were to verify whether plants from Mussununga differ from those of Mata Alta in relation to herbivory, water content, and fibres, and to test whether plants with lower leaf water content and higher fibres are less attacked by chewing insects. The results indicated that leaf herbivory percentages and fibres were similar between the two communities, although individuals from Mata Alta showed higher leaf water content than individuals from Mussununga. Thus, the herbivory patterns found for these tree communities do not seem to not be influenced by water content and fibres. Other factors (e.g., chemical defenses and/or herbivores) may be acting as main drivers.

RESUMO Este estudo teve por objetivo descrever a estrutura e composição florística arbórea de dois fragmentos naturais de florestas periodicamente inundadas na Reserva Biológica de Poço das Antas e compará-los a outros tipos florestais da região. Seis parcelas de 30 m x 20 m foram alocadas em cada fragmento. Todas as árvores (DAP ≥ 10 cm) foram amostradas. Os dois fragmentos, denominados ARI e CM, apresentaram estrutura muito similar. Ao todo foram amostradas 628 árvores pertencentes a 31 espécies e 16 famílias, com forte dominância de espécies heliófilas tolerantes à inundação, como Calophyllum brasiliense, Symphonia globulifera (Clusiaceae) e Tabebuia cassinoides (Bignoniaceae). Estas três espécies foram responsáveis por 73% do valor de cobertura em ARI e 67% em CM. Os índices de diversidade de espécies (H' = 1,75 e 1,99, para ARI e CM respectivamente) foram próximos aos de outras florestas inundáveis do sudeste brasileiro. Os fragmentos apresentaram elevada similaridade florística devido à dominância destas espécies heliófilas. Entretanto, a similaridade de espécies foi baixa em relação às florestas bem drenadas adjacentes. Aparentemente, o alagamento do solo é o maior fator regulador da composição florística desta vegetação.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a estrutura da comunidade arbórea de cinco fragmentos de floresta ombrófila densa submontana (FODS) na região de Imbaú, município de Silva Jardim, RJ, Brasil. Partiu-se da hipótese de que o processo de fragmentação ocasionou uma redução local na riqueza e diversidade de espécies arbóreas. Em cada fragmento foram alocadas sistematicamente quatro parcelas de 100 × 5 m. Todas as árvores vivas com DAP ≥ 5,0 cm foram medidas (DAP e altura) e identificadas. As famílias e espécies mais importantes foram: Meliaceae, Sapindaceae e Fabaceae, e Guarea guidonia e Cupania oblongifolia, respectivamente. Estas espécies não haviam se destacado em outras FODS nesta região. As espécies secundárias iniciais predominaram nos fragmentos, indicando efeitos do processo de fragmentação e que estes se encontram em estádio sucessional secundário. O índice de diversidade de espécies (H') por fragmento variou de 2,88 a 3,62 nats.ind-1, próximo a outras FODS secundárias, mas inferior aos valores para FODS maduras e preservadas nesta região. Entretanto, quando os fragmentos foram analisados em conjunto, o remanescente apresentou diversidade (4,01 nats.ind-1) próxima à de áreas preservadas, corroborando a hipótese inicial. Estes resultados indicam que a região de Imbaú ainda detém alta riqueza e diversidade de espécies, com uma flora arbórea peculiar, ressaltando a importância desta área para conservação.

Resumo Estudos fenológicos auxiliam na compreensão do comportamento das espécies em resposta a alterações no ambiente e são também importantes para a conservação e manejo das mesmas. A fenologia de Paratecoma peroba (Record & Mell) Kuhlm. foi estudada no período de outubro/2005 a dezembro/2007 na Mata do Carvão (Estação Ecológica Estadual de Guaxindiba), São Francisco do Itabapoana, RJ. As observações foram realizadas mensalmente, exceto durante a fase de floração que ocorreram em intervalos quinzenais. Acompanharam-se 42 indivíduos que apresentaram comportamento fenológico sazonal, com a senescência foliar ocorrendo no início da estação seca e a queda foliar entre meados e final desta mesma estação. O brotamento de novas folhas ocorreu no início da estação chuvosa. As percentagens de Fournier encontradas para as fenofases reprodutivas foram baixas e somente indivíduos com DAP > 16 cm apresentaram botões florais. No final da estação seca de 2005, os indivíduos apresentaram fenofases reprodutivas, com a floração ocorrendo na transição da estação seca para chuvosa e a frutificação foi longa (cerca de um ano) tendo início na estação chuvosa (novembro), com os frutos dispersando as sementes aladas no início da estação chuvosa seguinte. Nos anos seguintes, 2006 a 2008, não foi observado evento de floração. A espécie foi caracterizada como decídua, apresentando periodicidade de floração supra-anual.

Resumo Pouco se conhece sobre a estrutura e composição florística das florestas do noroeste fluminense, intensamente fragmentadas. Assim, o presente estudo objetivou contribuir para o conhecimento da flora arbórea desta região respondendo as seguintes questões: Qual a composição florística dos fragmentos e que espécies os caracterizam? A comunidade arbórea dos fragmentos da Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio São Domingos (BHRSD) possui elevada riqueza e diversidade florística? Em que estádio sucessional se encontram os fragmentos florestais da BHRSD? Foram selecionados quatro fragmentos florestais. Em cada um dos fragmentos foram instaladas cinco parcelas de 20 m × 20 m. Todos os indivíduos vivos e mortos com DAP ≥ 5 cm foram amostrados. Um total de 198 táxons pertencentes a 52 famílias botânicas foi amostrado. As espécies mais abundantes foram Apulei a leiocarp a, Gallesi a integrifoli a, Dalbergi a nigra e Guarea guidonia. Os valores de riqueza e de diversidade (H’) de espécies nas cinco diferentes áreas amostrais (0,2 ha) variaram de 33 a 89 e 2,81 a 3,87. Os fragmentos, apesar de secundários e em estádio intermediário de sucessão, apresentaram elevada diversidade, riqueza e uma composição peculiar de espécies arbóreas, que parece receber influências florísticas de formações florestais ombrófilas e semidecíduas do sudeste brasileiro. Sugere-se que estas referidas características estejam relacionadas à posição geográfica da região.

RESUMO Os processos de fragmentação florestal atualmente representamum dosprincipais riscosà biodiversidade global. Nestecontextoé muito importante considerar estas transformações artificiais aos ecossistemas para compreender até mesmo padrões e processos ecológicos naturais. Neste trabalho é feita uma sinopse teórica que inclui o desenvolvimento de alguns conceitos e uma análise crítica destes, mesmo na falta de um arcabouço conceitual unificador sobre fragmentação florestal. São discutidas algumas teorias sobre limites (i.e. bordas) artificiais e naturais tendo como base as transformações ao longo do tempo e fenômenos de retração e expansão de comunidades e ecossistemas. A sucessão ecológica é brevemente discutida com base nas visões conflitantes de Clements e Gleason e mencionamos a importância de rever alguns modelos sucessionais para elucidar determinados aspectos dos efeitos de borda. Sobre estes efeitos é esboçada uma breve perspectiva histórica da evolução de alguns conceitos. Embora exista um conhecimento relativamentevastosobreosefeitosdebordaafirmamosqueaindaémuito difícilprever atrajetóriados processos ecológicos em bordas assim como as transformações nos padrões naturais.

ABSTRACT The present study evaluated the relationship between herbivory and leaf quality of three abundant tree species (Cupania oblongifolia Mart., Siparuna guianensis Aubl. and Xylopia sericea St. Hill.) in the understory of a eucalyptus plantation and an adjacent Atlantic Rainforest fragment. Herbivory differed among species, since X. sericea was less attacked, while C. oblongifolia and S. guianensis were more. The species showed similar herbivory patterns between the investigated areas (eucalyptus plantation versus forest), although X. sericea showed higher herbivory rates in the forest fragment. Fiber values (NDF, CEL and LIG) varied significantly among the species, being lower in S. guianensis. X. sericea, the species with the highest C/N ratio, higher concentrations of total phenols, smaller leaf area and higher trichome density, showed the lowest leaf herbivory rates, corroborating the hypothesis that herbivory is lower in species with lower nutritional quality and a greater set of leaf defense features.
