O presente trabalho relata as atividades envolvidas no planejamento e construção de tanques para produção de Azolla sp., planta aquática com potencial de uso para alimentação de aves. As ações ocorreram em Capão do Leão e São Lourenço do Sul, municípios na zona Sul do Rio Grande do Sul. Foram construídos dois modelos, um externo aos piquetes de criação (Capão do Leão) e um interno aos mesmos (São Lourenço do Sul). Percebeu-se rápida propagação da Azolla nos tanques e preenchimento completo dos mesmos após cerca de 14 dias de cultivo. O sombreamento foi fundamental para o bom desenvolvimento da Azolla e manutenção de sua coloração esverdeada. Ausência de sombra promoveu alterações de cor e aumento na população de outras espécies vegetais. Houve excelente aceitação da Azolla pelas galinhas. Fornecer Azolla dentro dos piquetes resultou em consumo exagerado, promovendo queda drástica na população vegetal, a qual demorou para se restabelecer e passou a competir com outras espécies. Percebeu-se melhor controle e manutenção da população de Azolla quando o tanque foi construído na área externa aos piquetes, embora, nesse caso, o fornecimento venha a requerer maior mão de obra. O baixo custo, rápida propagação e facilidade de cultivo de Azolla podem vir a encorajar outros criadores a cultivá-la como fonte nutricional para suas galinhas.

Bos taurus taurus and Bos taurus indicus cattle subspecies present different capabilities in coping with situations of elevated temperatures, the latter being more tolerant to heat stress. Thus, some breeding programs crossed these subspecies to produce a high producing yet heat-tolerant breed (Girolando). Nineteen Holstein (H100) and 19 Girolando cows [(½ Holstein x Gir (H50) and ¾ Holstein x Gir (H75)] with similar milk production were used in a six-day experiment to evaluate the consequences of heat stress due to shade deprivation on their physiological, blood and milk traits. Cows were exposed to a non-shaded environment between morning (06:00h; GMT -3:00) and evening milking (14:30h; GMT -3:00) with access to water ad libitum. Procedures were conducted before morning and evening milkings. Physiological parameters related to mechanisms of heat dissipation were measured, as well as the milk composition. Blood traits were evaluated. Temperature-humidity index (THI) was calculated. Statistical procedures included analysis of variance, correlation and principal factors. THI was elevated during the entire trial and negatively impacted physiological, milk and blood parameters in H100, H75 and H50. Alterations in physiology, milk stability, milk composition and blood traits were more pronounced in H100. Holstein cows presented changes in physiological parameters in a more pronounced manner and in some milk and blood traits related to the reduced capability of this breed in dealing with elevated THI. The similarity in milk production levels excludes this parameter as a justification for differences in heat tolerance, with genetic composition being the main reason for this results.

This research communication addresses the hypothesis that, during the summer in the subtropics, natural tree shade helps to improve milk functional characteristics such as stability and acidity. Sixteen Holstein lactating cows were enrolled. The study consisted of three periods (pre-stress, heat stress and post-stress) based on allocating grazing cows into two treatments (with and without access to shade during the Heat Stress period). Overall THI during the trial was (mean ± se) 76.0 ± 3.4. Access to shade prevented the heat stress-related decrease in milk stability both in the ethanol and in the coagulation time test, as well as maintained milk acidity within an acceptable range (14 to 18°D).

Apresenta-se uma discussão sobre a temática “De onde vem o (MEU) alimento”, com objetivo de abordar de forma teórico-prática as possibilidades de aplicação de conceitos e exercícios práticos sobre a importância de questionar a qualidade, origem e sustentabilidade do alimento no exercício da docência.

Tight junctions are almost impermeable structures located near the apical border of epithelial cells; increase in the permeability of mammary gland cells’ tight junctions may alter milk composition and its suitability for industrialization. Sixteen Holstein dairy cows were studied to evaluate mammary gland cells’ tight junction permeability (indicated by plasma lactose levels) from cows producing stable or unstable milk to ethanol at 72 °GL concentration. Rectal temperature, respiratory rate and milk parameters were also compared and weather conditions (temperature–humidity index) monitored. Temperature–humidity index did not vary for cows producing stable or unstable milk, so there were no differences in physiological traits. Cows producing unstable milk presented elevated tight junctions’ permeability, probably due to higher days in milk. The odds of cows producing unstable milk (clots formation when mixed with ethanol below or equal 72 °GL) increases according to elevations in days in milk and tight junction permeability.

Esta pesquisa buscou caracterizar a situação produtiva e socioeconômica de 14 feirantes da praça central do município de São Lourenço do Sul/RS, através da aplicação de questionários. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida de fevereiro a março de 2015. Não foram identificadas pessoas com idade inferior a 35 anos entre os entrevistados, podendo indicar que os jovens se dedicam à outras atividades não relacionadas à produção e comercialização de produtos agrícolas. Em relação à escolaridade, as respostas relativas à ausência desta ou frequência até o Ensino Médio somam 72%. Constatou-se que o trabalho da mulher é bem valorizado: 13 do total de entrevistados consideram fundamental para o sucesso da produção e comercialização. A renda média dos feirantes é R$1.363,85 mensais. A feira é o principal canal de comercialização dos produtores da agricultura familiar. De acordo com os feirantes, a vantagem de comercializar os produtos na feira é a eliminação do atravessador. A maioria da produção (54%) é convencional, o que representa um campo a ser explorado para conversão a sistemas mais sustentáveis. No âmbito socioeconômico há vínculo entre produtores e consumidores e a renda obtida através da feira foi considerada satisfatória.

Infrared thermography of the lateral side portion of the udder was taken from 38 lactating cows in a 6-day experiment. Thermograms were analyzed using specific software with the use of eight different methods. The experiment was aimed at correlating the different methods with each other and with rectal temperature (RT), in order to suggest a method to assess udder side temperature, and also at creating regression equations to enable RT calculation through the use of thermographic data. Com o objetivo de realizar uma análise crítica sobre a conjuntura do espaço agrário e perceber o potencial de promoção da agroecologia no município São Lourenço do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, foi realizado um estudo através da aplicação de questionário a 72 agricultores familiares em seis dos oito distritos municipais. Houve predominância na presença de agricultores de ascendência pomerana. A agricultura se configura como familiar, tanto pelo tamanho das propriedades quanto pela organização do trabalho, contando com grande participação de membros da família na produção, na maioria filhos dos proprietários. A maioria das propriedades foi obtida por herança. O principal cultivo que gera renda, a partir da percepção dos agricultores, é o fumo, apesar de tal cultivo ocupar área menor do que as pastagens, milho e soja, respectivamente. Todos os produtores utilizam insumos químicos na produção, porém, 100% mudariam para um sistema de produção de bases ecológicas, principalmente em função de sua saúde. Observa-se que é baixa a percepção dos agricultores sobre os impactos da produção agropecuária convencional sobre o meio ambiente. São Lourenço do Sul é um município cujo espaço agrário se configura como uma possível frente de resistência às tendências de êxodo rural, bem como pode ser um importante polo para desenvolvimento de políticas de fomento à produção de base agroecológica.

Data from five experiments with dairy cows where feed was restricted to 0, 40, and 50 % of the ad libitum amount, with 259 observations, were subjected to multivariate analyses to determine the effects of severity and duration of feed restriction on production, physical-chemical characteristics, ethanol stability, and somatic cell score of milk. A negative relationship was seen between the severity and duration of feed restriction with milk production, lactose content, titratable acidity, and milk stability to the ethanol test. The milk stability to the ethanol test, protein content, milk yield, and somatic cells score were the most important attributes retained by the discriminant analysis. Milk stability to the ethanol test, live weight, days in restriction, and pH were the most important characteristics explaining the variance within the different levels of feed restriction. Milk production and ethanol stability were significantly lower in both levels of feed restriction compared with the group fed ad libitum. When feed restriction was followed by refeeding, the difference observed in ethanol stability was the first discriminant variable, followed by the difference in unstable milk frequency and titratable acidity. Infrared thermography applications in animal production systems.Infrared thermography is a useful tool as index physiologic changing in animals.Infrared thermography is a noninvasive remote sensing method.Limitations and factors that must be considered when using infrared thermography. Infrared thermography technology is a noninvasive method that has been used to indicate thermal biometric changes in animal metabolism resulting from increased body temperature and changes in blood flow in response to environmental or physiological conditions. Thus, this technology can be a useful tool and general stress indicator as well as indicate inflammatory processes, pain and disease. Therefore, this manuscript aims to review the use of this technology in animal production, addressing aspects of heat and physiological stress, metabolism, nutrition, inflammatory processes, diseases, ectoparasite detection and reproduction.

This experiment aimed to describe the effects ofOreganoextract (OE) inclusion into the concentrate fed to dairy heifers on physiological parameters, feeding behavior, intake, and performance. Thirty-two Holstein heifers were randomly distributed into four treatments: C = control, without addition of OE; OE2.5 = 2.5 g; OE5.0 = 5.0 g and OE7.5 = 7.5 g ofOreganoextract per heifer/day. Feeding behavior and concentrate intake were assessed individually every day and total dry matter intake (DMI) was determined on the last week of the trial. Compared to control group, OE7.5 reduced by 32% the latency time to approach the feed bunk but increased by 6% the time spent eating the concentrate. Each inclusion of 2.5 grams of OE into the concentrate increased the occurrence of postingestive licking the feed bunk with abundant saliva production 1.2 times (P<0.01) and tended to increase the occurrence of sneeze events 1.2 times (P<0.10). No statistical difference was detected between treatments for total DMI, but concentrate DMI was 9% lower for OE7.5 when compared to control and OE2.5. The inclusion of 7.5 grams/day of OE causes small but negative effects in feeding behavior and concentrate intake, without change on total dry matter intake.

Context The effect of heat stress on the production and physiology of lactating dairy cows is well documented in literature. However, little is known about the effect of the provision of shade on DNA damage. Aims The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of shade provision on physiological, oxidative-stress, and DNA-strand damage in dairy cows exposed to mild heat stress. Methods The study was conducted at Lages, SC, Brazil, during 15 days in a southern hemisphere summer (January and February), with 14 lactating Holstein (n = 10) and Holstein × Jersey crossbreed (n = 4) dairy cows. Animals were randomly allocated to two groups of seven animals each (named as shaded and unshaded). These two groups were evaluated in the following three different periods: pre-stress period (5-day duration), stress period (4-day duration) and post-stress period (6-day duration). Shaded cows had free access to shade throughout the study; unshaded cows were prevented from accessing shade only in the stress period. Physiological (rectal temperature, heart and respiratory frequencies and panting score) and DNA-damage parameters (through Comet assay), as well as oxidative stress (in blood: carbonyl content, nitrite:nitrate ratio, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, TBARS) were evaluated. Key results In the stress period, shade deprivation resulted in higher values of respiratory rate, indicating that cows were under heat stress. In addition, DNA-damage levels were higher in this circumstance, probably due to inhibition of the DNA-repair systems by the thermal stress as well as thermal stress acting as a DNA-damage agent. Conclusions In a high-altitude subtropical region, during the hot season, shade provision decreases solar radiation heating effects and, thus, reduces DNA damage and the negative effects on cow metabolism and cell structure. Implications Shade effects on cow metabolism and cell structure must be taken into consideration in the planning of dairy farms and our results suggest that shade availability must not be disregarded, even in situations of mild heat stress.

Dairy cattle raised under harsh conditions have to adapt and prevent heat stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate physical characteristics and their association with heat tolerance in different genetic groups of dairy cattle. Thickness of the skin and coat, length and number of hairs, body measurements, as well as physiological parameters and body temperatures by infrared thermography were determined in 19 Holstein and 19 Girolando (½ and ¾ Holstein) cows. The Holstein cattle were less tolerant to heat stress than Girolando (GH50 and GH75 Holstein), because of the difficulty in dissipating heat due to the larger body size, as well as thicker and longer hairs. The correlations between physical characteristics, physiological parameters, and thermographic measurements prove to be inconsistent among genetic groups and therefore are not predictive of heat tolerance, while the regressions of morphometric characteristics on physiological and thermographic measures were not significant. Thus, the physical characteristics were not good predictors of physiological indices and thermographic temperature and so should not be used.

The effect of shade on behavior and physiological attributes of grazing cows in a high altitude subtropical zone is not well established. This work aimed to investigate how social and ingestive behaviors, as well as physiological and other attributes of dairy cows such as milk production, change in a subtropical environment during the hot season either with or without free access to shade. Fourteen lactating cows were kept on pasture either with no shade or with free access to shade for 5 days and their behavior was recorded with instantaneous scan sampled every 10 min, from sunrise, 0530 h (Greenwich mean time, GMT-0200 h) to sunset, 2100 h (GMT-0200 h). Behavior traits included (1) time spent in activities such as grazing, ruminating, resting, lying, standing, walking, seeking shade and staying in the proximity to the water trough and (2) number of events such as water ingestion, aggressive interactions, as well as competition for shade and water. Physiological attributes such as heart and respiratory rates, rectal temperature, number of rumen movements, panting score, as well as milk yield, were evaluated. Time spent in behavioral activities, number of behavioral events and physiological attributes varied between groups (with and without access to shade). Cows with no shade showed increased respiratory and heart rates and panting score at 1300 h, higher values for time of permanence near the water trough, number of competition and aggression events for shade. On the other hand, they showed lower values for time spent resting while lying, ruminating while standing, seeking shade. Access to shade did not change time spent lying, standing, walking with the head up, ruminating while lying, resting while standing, as well as milk yield and number of ruminal movements. Significant interactions between access to shade and days of measurements were detected for time spent walking, ruminating, grazing, resting, number of water ingestion events, competition events near the water trough and for shade, as well as for rectal temperature and panting score measured at 1700 h. In the high altitude subtropical region, access to shade minimizes negative heat stress effects on behavior and physiological aspects of dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to determine whether infrared thermography is a useful tool for the recognition of dairy cows in a state of thermal heat stress, as well as to identify the best region of the animal to be evaluated for this recognition. Physiological variables, including rectal temperature, respiratory frequency, cardiac frequency, and panting score were recorded in 38 lactating cows. For the assessment of environmental parameters, a digital black globe thermometer (TGD-200 model) was used. Thermographic photographs of different regions of the body of cows were taken using an infrared camera (FLIR® System T300) and indicated respective superficial temperature. Physiological variables and superficial body temperature in different regions varied between genetic groups (Girolando: ½ Holstein × ½ Gir and ¾ Holstein × ¼ Gir; purebred Holstein). The environmental temperature ranged from 20.7 to 37.9 °C with a relative humidity reaching 95%. The mean rectal temperature (40.84 °C), respiratory frequency (111.36 breaths/min), and cardiac frequency (99.22 beats/min) were higher for pure Holstein than for Girolando cows. Positive correlations were found between the physiological parameters and thermographic measures. The highest positive correlation (0.74) was found between the temperature in the lateral region of the udder and rectal temperature. Thermography is a good indicator of thermal comfort. The best region to identify heat stress in cows using thermography is the lateral region of the udder.

The objective of this research was to determine the variation of milk stability evaluated with ethanol, boiling, and coagulation time tests (CTT) to identify milk components related with stability and verify the correlation between the three methods. Bulk raw milk was collected monthly at 50 dairy farms from January 2007 to October 2009 and physicochemical attributes, somatic cell (SCC), and total bacterial counts (TBC) were determined. Milk samples were classified into low, medium, and high stability to ethanol test when coagulation occurred at 72 °GL, between 74 and 78 °GL, and above 78 °GL, respectively. Univariate analysis was performed considering the effects of year, months, and interaction in a completely randomized design. Principal factor analysis and logistic regression were done. There was an interaction between months and years for stability to the ethanol test and coagulation time. All samples were stable at the boiling test. Boiling test was not related to ethanol and coagulation time tests. Coagulation time was weakly but positively correlated with ethanol test. Broken line analysis revealed that milk stability measured with CTT and ethanol tests decreased sharply when SCC attained 790,000 or 106 cell/mL of milk, respectively. Milk stability measured with ethanol test decreased when TBC was higher than 250,000 cfu/mL, while there was no inflexion point between TBC and stability measured with CTT. Milk with high stability presented lower values for acidity, TBC, and SCC but higher values for pH, lactose, protein, and CTT compared with low-stability milk. Due to the execution easiness, single-point cut-off result and low cost, we do not recommend the replacement of ethanol test for boiling or coagulation time test.

Lameness can negatively affect production, but there is still controversy about the perception of pain in dairy cows. This study aimed to verify the effects of hoof affections in dairy cows on locomotion score, physiological attributes, pressure nociceptive threshold, and thermographic variables, as well as assess improvement on these variables after corrective trimming and treatment. Thirty-four lame lactating cows were gait-scored, and all cows with locomotion score ≥4 were retained for this study 1 day before trimming. Lame cows were diagnosed, pressure nociceptive threshold at sound, and affected hooves were measured, thermographic images were recorded, and physiological attributes were evaluated. Hooves with lesions were trimmed and treated and cows were re-evaluated 1 week after such procedures. The experimental design was a completely randomized design. Each cow was considered an experimental unit and traits were analyzed using paired t test, linear correlation, and linear regression. Digital and interdigital dermatitis were classified as infectious diseases while laminitis sequels, sole ulcers, and white line were classified as non-infectious diseases. After 1 week, the locomotion score was reduced on average in 1.5 points. Trimming increased the pressure nociceptive threshold for cows with non-infectious affections while tended to increase the pressure nociceptive threshold for cows with infectious affections. Physiological attributes and thermographic values did not change with trimming. Trimming and treatment have benefic effects on animal welfare as gait is improved and sensitivity to pain is reduced.

The experiment was carried out to identify changes in the behaviorr of lactating cows induced by severe feeding restriction and further refeeding that could serve as facilitators for the visual identification of cows more prone to produce milk with reduced stability. Twelve cows were separated into two groups: Control: full diet supply; Restriction: 50% of the full diet. Feed restriction lasted seven days (Period 1), with posterior supply of full diet for seven days (Period 2) for all treatments. Behavior was observed on the first and fifth days in each period from 08h40 to 19h00. Ingestive and social behavior were monitored. Cortisol assessed stress levels. Analysis of variance and multifactorial statistical analyzes were performed. Adequate feed supply reduced stress, improved animals' welfare and milk stability to the ethanol test. Elevation in the incidence of behavior related with hunger, frustration and discomfort is an indicator of cows more prone to produce milk with reduced stability. RESUMO: O experimento foi conduzido para identificar alterações comportamentais de vacas lactantes submetidas à restrição alimentar severa e realimentação, as quais podem servir para identificação visual de vacas mais propensas a produzir leite de reduzida estabilidade ao álcool. Doze vacas foram separadas em dois grupos: controle: suprimento de dieta completa; restrição: 50% da dieta completa. A restrição alimentar durou sete dias (Período 1), com posterior suprimento de dieta completa por sete dias (Período 2) a todos os animais. O comportamento foi monitorado no primeiro e quinto dias de cada período, entre as 08h40min e 19h. Comportamentos ingestivo e social foram observados. Os níveis de cortisol foram utilizados para monitorar os níveis de estresse. Análises de variância e multifatorial foram realizadas. O suprimento adequado da dieta reduziu estresse, aumentou o bem-estar animal, bem como a estabilidade do leite ao teste do álcool. Elevação na incidência de comportamentos relacionados à fome, frustração e desconforto é um indicador de vacas mais propensas a produzir leite com reduzida estabilidade.

The objective of this study was to investigate changes in physiological parameters of dairy cows and understand which physiological parameters show greater reliability for verification of heat stress. Blood samples were collected for analysis and included hematocrit (Ht), erythrocyte count (ERY), and hemoglobin count (HEMO). In addition, physiological variables, including rectal temperature (RT), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), and panting score (PS) were recorded in 38 lactating cows. These varied according to genetic group (1/2, 3/4, and pure bred Holstein (HO)). Analysis of variance considering the effects of genetic group, days, and their interaction as well as linear and quadratic effect of the black globe humidity index (BGHI) was performed, as well as broken-line regression. These values were higher in pure HO than in 3/4 and 1/2 groups. The average BGHI during the morning was 74, when 70, 43, and 13% of pure HO, 3/4, and 1/2, respectively, presented RR above reference value. The RR was the best indicator of heat stress and its critical value was 116 breaths/min for 1/2, 140 for 3/4, and 168 breaths/min for pure HO cows. In the HO group, physiological variables increased linearly with BGHI, without presenting inflection in the regression. The inflection point occurred at a higher BGHI for the 1/2 group compared with the other groups. Hematocrit and HEMO were different among genetic groups and did not vary with BGHI, showing that stress was not sufficient to alter these hematological parameters. The 1/2 HO group was capable of maintaining normal physiological parameters for at least 3 BGHI units above that of HO and 1 to 3 units higher than 3/4 HO for RR and RT, respectively. Respiratory rate is the physiological parameter that best predicts heat stress in dairy cattle, and the 1/2 Holstein group is the best adapted to heat stress.

O ganho genético obtido com a seleção em gerações segregantes é dependente do cruzamento, das condições experimentais e do caráter alvo de seleção. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o ganho com a seleção em planta espaçada, na geraç��o F2 para número de afilhos, utilizando diferentes critérios de seleção, além de verificar a efetividade destas seleções na geração subseqüente, nos métodos de semeadura deplanta espaçada e linha cheia. As gerações segregantes foram desenvolvidos em 2006 (F2) e 2007 (F2 e F3), sendo a geração F3 avaliada em planta espaçada e linha cheia. Foram empregados três critérios de seleção: a) elevado número de afilhos e alta produção de grãos; b) reduzido número de afilhos com elevada produção de grãos e c) bulk da população. Foram testadas 15 combinações envolvendo genitores com diferente potencial de afilhamento. Os resultados indicam que mesmo em reduzida magnitude, as estimativas de herdabilidade para estimar a média da próxima geração, revelaram eficiência, porém, somente quando as gerações utilizadas foram desenvolvidas em iguais condições de ambiente e manejo. A seleção para elevado ou reduzido número de afilhos e em bulk, foram dependentes do sistema de manejo em que a população segregante tenha sido submetida. A seleção para elevado número de afilhos revelou o maior ganho genético para produção de grãos, porém, a efetividade da seleção em planta espaçada não proporcionou o mesmo comportamento em competição. O melhor desempenho em rendimento de grãos foi detectado na seleção para reduzido número de afilhos, com média elevada para massa de grãos em competição.The genetic gain obtained with the selection in segregating generations depends on the cross, experimental conditions and the target trait selected. The objective of this work was to determine the genetic gain with selection in spaced plants, in the F2 generation for the character number of tillers, using different selection criteria. In addition it aimed at to verify the effectiveness of these selections by looking at next generations of plants selected by the spaced plant and full row methods. The segregating generations were conducted in the years 2006 (F2) and 2007 (F2 and F3), being the F3 generation evaluated as spaced plant and full row. Three selection criteria were used: i) high tiller number and grain production; ii) low tiller number with high grain production and iii) a bulk of 15 parental genotypes with different tillering potential. The results pointed out that heritability estimates were efficient for the prediction of next generation means when the generations used were under the same environmental and management conditions. The efficiency of the selection for high or low tillering ability and the bulk selection were dependent of the crop management system used. The selection for high tiller number was associated to a higher genetic gain for grain production. However, the efficiency of the selection was different when spaced and competing plants are compared. The best performance for grain yield was achieved selecting for low tiller number in competing plants, resulted in higher total grain weight.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of concentrate-to-forage ratio (C:F) on the performance, blood profile, and milk physicochemical characteristics of mid-lactation cows fed a corn silage-based diet. Twenty four Holstein cows, with BW 575 ± 70 kg, body condition score (BCS) 3.1 ± 0.2, milk yield 18.4 ± 3.0 kg, and days in milk (DIM) 121 ± 21 were randomly allocated into three treatments with C:F ratios of 35:65, 45:55, and 55:45 on a dry matter (DM) basis. Data was submitted to analyses of variance and regression. Increasing C:F from 35 to 55 % linearly enhanced milk production (22 to 23.6 kg day(-1)) and serum urea nitrogen (16.8 to 19.6 mg/dL), while it linearly reduced lactose and fat in milk (4.8 to 4.6 %; 3.9 to 3.6 %, respectively). Body weight, BCS, milk acidity, ethanol stability, coagulation time, and milk and blood mineral contents did not differ among treatments. During the last period of measurements, increased C:F reduced urinary pH and milk urea nitrogen. Changes of concentrate-to-forage proportion from 35 to 55 % increased milk yield, altered chemical composition without changing BW, BCS, acidity, stability, and mineral content of milk and blood attributes.

Feed shortages are relatively frequent in subtropical pasture-based dairy production systems. The effect of feed restriction on milk yield and physical-chemical traits was evaluated in this study. The experiment was carried out in Brazil's south region. Treatments consisted of control and restricted diet. Six multiparous and six primiparous cows, with 499 ± 47.20 kg body weight (BW), at mid-lactation (188 ± 124 days in milk), producing 19.35 ± 4.10 kg of milk were assigned to two groups, balanced for parity, each group receiving a different sequence of the dietary treatments for 56 days, in a crossover design. Diet nominated as control included 8 kg DM 100 kg BW-1 of Bermuda grass var. Tifton pasture (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.), 5.00 kg of concentrate and 2.50 kg of Tifton hay per day. The restriction diet consisted of 50 % of the quantity offered in the control diet. Milk production and physicochemical composition were evaluated. Feed restriction reduced milk production by 40 %, body condition score by 5 %, milk magnesium by 14.3 %, lactose by 1.7 %, titratable acidity by 10 % and stability to the ethanol test by 9 % and it tended to increase (7 %) milk potassium content. No changes were found for the remaining characteristics. Since feed restriction is quite frequent in Brazil's extensive dairy production systems, our concern is that besides decreased milk production, changes can occur in the physiochemical attributes of the milk, mainly a reduction in the stability to the ethanol test, which may increase the volume of milk rejected by the industry.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a inclusão de citrato de sódio e de bicarbonato de sódio na dieta de vacas lactantes Jersey e seus efeitos sobre os atributos metabólicos, a produtividade e a estabilidade do leite. Foram avaliados o pH urinário, os níveis sanguíneos de glicose e ureia, o peso e o escore de condição corporal, a produção e a estabilidade do leite (teste do álcool) e as propriedades físico‑químicas do leite de 17 vacas, alimentadas com dietas com citrato de sódio (100 g por vaca por dia), bicarbonato de sódio (40 g por vaca por dia) ou sem aditivos. As avaliações foram feitas no 28o e 44o dias. O fornecimento de citrato ou de bicarbonato de sódio não influencia os atributos metabólicos, a produtividade, o peso e o escore de condição corporal das vacas, nem a composição ou a estabilidade do leite. The objective of this work was to evaluate the inclusion of sodium citrate and sodium bicarbonate in the diet of lactating Jersey cows, and its effects on the metabolic attributes, productivity and stability of milk. We evaluated urinary pH, levels of glucose and urea in blood, body weight, body condition score, milk yield, milk stability (ethanol test), and milk physicochemical properties of 17 cows fed diets containing sodium citrate (100 g per cow per day), sodium bicarbonate (40 g per cow per day) or no additives. A total of twelve lactating Jersey cows were used in a 5-week experiment to determine the effects of severe feed restriction on the permeability of mammary gland cell tight junctions (TJs) and its effects on milk stability to the alcohol test. During the first 2 weeks, cows were managed and fed together and received the same diet according to their nutritional requirements (full diet: 15 kg of sugar cane silage; 5.8 kg of alfalfa hay; 0.16 kg of mineral salt and 6.2 kg of concentrate). In the 3rd week, animals were distributed into two groups of six cows each. One group received the full diet and the other a restricted diet (50% of the full diet). In the 4th and 5th weeks, all animals received the full diet again. Milk composition and other attributes, such as titratable acidity, ethanol stability, pH, density and somatic cell count (SCC) were evaluated. Cortisol levels indicated the stress condition of the cows. Plasma lactose and milk sodium were measured to assess mammary TJ leakiness. Principal factor analysis (PFA) showed that the first two principal factors (PFs) contributed with 44.47% and 20.57% of the total variance in the experiment and, as feeding levels increased, milk stability to the ethanol test became higher and plasma lactose levels decreased, which indicates lower permeability of the mammary gland cell TJ. Correspondence analyses were consistent with PFA and also showed that lower feeding levels were related to reduced milk stability, high plasma lactose, high sodium in milk, low milk lactose (another parameter used to assess TJ permeability) and higher cortisol levels, indicating the stress to which animals were submitted. All observations were grouped in three clusters, with some of the above-mentioned patterns. Feeding restriction was associated with higher permeability of TJ, decreasing milk stability to the ethanol test.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da restrição alimentar sobre a produção de leite bovino e sobre seu perfil eletroforético de proteínas, bem como relacioná‑los à estabilidade do leite pelo teste do álcool. Foram conduzidos dois experimentos com vacas Jersey: no primeiro, avaliou-se o efeito da redução de 40% na alimentação fornecida a vacas semiconfinadas; no segundo, avaliou-se o efeito da restrição de 30% do conteúdo de nutrientes digestíveis totais na alimentação de vacas confinadas. As frações proteicas foram determinadas por eletroforese, e sua quantificação por meio de análises de imagens. As amostras de leite foram classificadas conforme estabilidade no teste do álcool a 72°GL. A restrição alimentar de 40% a vacas semiconfinadas reduziu a produção de leite, mas não alterou a composição de proteínas lácteas e a estabilidade do leite; neste caso, o leite instável apresentou maiores teores de β‑caseína e de proteínas totais, porém menor proporção de κ‑caseína em comparação ao leite estável. A restrição de 30% do aporte energético a vacas confinadas não reduziu a produção leiteira, porém diminuiu a percentagem de albumina sérica bovina e a estabilidade no teste do álcool; neste caso, o leite instável e o estável não diferiram quanto às proteínas lácteas. The objective of this work was to evaluate the feeding restriction effects on milk yield and on its electrophoretic protein profile, and to relate them to milk stability to the alcohol test. Two experiments were carried out with Jersey cows: in the first one, the effect of 40% feed restriction was evaluated on semiconfined cows; in the second one, the effect of 30% reduction in total digestive nutrients was evaluated on confined cows. Protein fractions were determined by electrophoresis and their quantification was done by image analysis. Milk samples were classified according to their stability in the 72°GL‑alcohol test. The 40% feed restriction for semiconfined cows decreased milk yield, but it did not change milk protein contents and stability; in this case, unstable milk showed larger contents of β‑casein and total proteins, but lower κ‑casein in comparison to stable milk. The 30% restriction of energy supply for confined cows did not reduce milk yield, but decreased the percentage of serum bovine albumin and milk stability; in this case, unstable and stable milk did not differ as for protein fractions.

O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar os principais resultados da pesquisa sobre o leite instável não ácido ou LINA. A proporção de amostras de leite com estabilidade térmica, abaixo do mínimo exigido pela indústria brasileira, configura um sério problema, com uma ocorrência mais elevada durante os períodos de carência alimentar. Trata-se de um problema multifatorial, cujos fatores intervenientes são relacionados à execução do teste (concentração do álcool), ao manejo (alimentação, clima, relação homem-animal), ao animal (suscetibilidade ao estresse, potencial produtivo, estádio da lactação, sanidade, problemas digestivos e metabólicos, frações da caseína), entre outros. Existem dúvidas quanto à capacidade do teste do álcool em estimar a estabilidade térmica do leite. A indústria necessita de um teste rápido, de baixo custo e que realmente identifique o leite adequado ao processamento térmico. O manejo correto dos animais, aliado ao uso de parâmetros realistas de execução do teste do álcool, pode contribuir para melhorar a estabilidade do leite. This paper aimed to present the main results about the unstable non acid milk (LINA). The proportion of milk samples with thermal stability below the Brazilian dairy industry standard is a serious problem, with highest occurrence at short food supply periods. It is a multi factorial problem, which causing factors are related to test execution (ethanol concentration used), to management (feeding, climate, human-animal relation), to animal (stress susceptibility, productive potential, lactation stage, sanitary condition, digestive and metabolic disorders), among others. There are doubts to the accuracy and precision of the alcohol test to detect stability problems. Dairy industry needs a fast, low price and easy test, but that can identify milk suitable to thermal processing. An adequate animal's management besides realistic parameters of milk test might contribute to improve milk stability.

O ganho genético obtido com a seleção em gerações segregantes é dependente do cruzamento, das condições experimentais e do caráter alvo de seleção. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o ganho com a seleção em planta espaçada, na geração F2 para número de afilhos, utilizando diferentes critérios de seleção, além de verificar a efetividade destas seleções na geração subseqüente, nos métodos de semeadura deplanta espaçada e linha cheia. As gerações segregantes foram desenvolvidos em 2006 (F2) e 2007 (F2 e F3), sendo a geração F3 avaliada em planta espaçada e linha cheia. Foram empregados três critérios de seleção: a) elevado número de afilhos e alta produção de grãos; b) reduzido número de afilhos com elevada produção de grãos e c) bulk da população. Foram testadas 15 combinações envolvendo genitores com diferente potencial de afilhamento. Os resultados indicam que mesmo em reduzida magnitude, as estimativas de herdabilidade para estimar a média da próxima geração, revelaram eficiência, porém, somente quando as gerações utilizadas foram desenvolvidas em iguais condições de ambiente e manejo. A seleção para elevado ou reduzido número de afilhos e em bulk, foram dependentes do sistema de manejo em que a população segregante tenha sido submetida. A seleção para elevado número de afilhos revelou o maior ganho genético para produção de grãos, porém, a efetividade da seleção em planta espaçada não proporcionou o mesmo comportamento em competição. O melhor desempenho em rendimento de grãos foi detectado na seleção para reduzido número de afilhos, com média elevada para massa de grãos em competição. The genetic gain obtained with the selection in segregating generations depends on the cross, experimental conditions and the target trait selected. The objective of this work was to determine the genetic gain with selection in spaced plants, in the F2 generation for the character number of tillers, using different selection criteria. In addition it aimed at to verify the effectiveness of these selections by looking at next generations of plants selected by the spaced plant and full row methods. The segregating generations were conducted in the years 2006 (F2) and 2007 (F2 and F3), being the F3 generation evaluated as spaced plant and full row. Three selection criteria were used: i) high tiller number and grain production; ii) low tiller number with high grain production and iii) a bulk of 15 parental genotypes with different tillering potential. The results pointed out that heritability estimates were efficient for the prediction of next generation means when the generations used were under the same environmental and management conditions. The efficiency of the selection for high or low tillering ability and the bulk selection were dependent of the crop management system used. The selection for high tiller number was associated to a higher genetic gain for grain production. However, the efficiency of the selection was different when spaced and competing plants are compared. The best performance for grain yield was achieved selecting for low tiller number in competing plants, resulted in higher total grain weight.

This study aimed to investigate how type of hoof injury and corrective trimming alter the behavior of dairy cows. Thirty-four lactating Holstein and Jersey cows were used. They were scored for lameness score on days –2 and 6, before and after trimming and treatment, respectively, using a numerical rating system, in which 1 = perfect gait and 5 = severely lame, and had their postural and ingestive behavior evaluated on days –1 and 6 before and after trimming and treatment, respectively. Locomotion score was analyzed using t-paired test and behavioral data were analyzed by univariate variance analysis with cows as the experimental units, according to a completely randomized design with repeated measurements. Cows with infectious hoof diseases spent less time lying down and idling, but more time standing up and feeding at the trough than those with non-infectious hoof diseases. Locomotion score and the proportion of time spent standing decreased one week after trimming and treatment, while time spent lying down increased. Trimming plus treatment and type of hoof diseases do not change ingestive behavior but change postural behavior of dairy cows.

The objective was to investigate the effects of available shaded area on behavioural characteristics of lactating cows during the warm season in the subtropics. Twelve Holstein cows were divided into groups, with 2 (SH2) or 10 m2 (SH10) of available shade per cow (six cows per treatment). The behaviour was recorded when animals were grazing from 09.00 to 16.00 h (GMT −02.00 h) throughout the trial. Data considered in the statistical analysis were restricted to the five days when the maximum temperature was ≥ 25 °C. Cows in the SH10 group had lower panting score, but higher proportions of time in shade and lying down and stayed more time per visit in the shaded area than cows in the SH2 group. Cows in the SH10 group had less events of competition near the water trough and in the shaded area than cows in the SH2 group. The solar radiation threshold that triggered the use of the shade was lower in SH10 than in SH2 group. Hourly proportion of time spent grazing or ruminating differed between shaded areas at specific times. The 2 m2 of available shaded area per cow is sufficient for all cows to enter the shaded area at the same time. In spite of that, 2 m2 of available shaded area per cow negatively affects the proportion of time spent lying and in the shaded area; in addition, it enhances agonistic behaviours between cows when compared with 10 m2 of shade per cow.

Bos taurus taurus and Bos taurus indicus cattle subspecies present different capabilities in coping with situations of elevated temperatures, the latter being more tolerant to heat stress. Thus, some breeding programs crossed these subspecies to produce a high producing yet heat-tolerant breed (Girolando). Nineteen Holstein (H100) and 19 Girolando cows [(½ Holstein × Gir (H50) and ¾ Holstein × Gir (H75)] with similar milk production were used in a six-day experiment to evaluate the consequences of heat stress due to shade deprivation on their physiological, blood and milk traits. Cows were exposed to a non-shaded environment between morning (06:00h; GMT -3:00) and evening milking (14:30h; GMT -3:00) with access to water ad libitum. Procedures were conducted before morning and evening milkings. Physiological parameters related to mechanisms of heat dissipation were measured, as well as the milk composition. Blood traits were evaluated. The temperature-humidity index (THI) was calculated. Statistical procedures included analysis of variance, correlation, and principal factors. THI was elevated during the trial and negatively impacted physiological, milk, and blood parameters in H100, H75, and H50. Alterations in physiology, milk stability, milk composition, and blood traits were more pronounced in H100. Holstein cows presented changes in physiological parameters in a more pronounced manner and in some milk and blood traits related to the reduced capability of this breed in dealing with elevated THI. The similarity in milk production levels excludes this parameter as a justification for differences in heat tolerance, with genetic composition being the main reason for these results.
