L’écrit, la photo ou le cinéma peuvent en révéler certains aspects mais peinent à rendre compte des sensations, affects – négatifs ou positifs –, des enjeux collectifs et culturels qui y sont associés. Parce qu’il articule des images qui ne sont pas uniquement figuratives et du texte, use de codes graphiques originaux, l’art séquentiel peut être à même d’offrir un éclairage complémentaire. A partir d’extraits issus de cinq œuvres récentes, cet article tente d’illustrer et d’analyser la représentation et la transmission (de l’ouvrier au dessinateur, puis du dessinateur au lecteur ou à la lectrice) du beau geste, des sensations et sentiments (y compris sociaux) qui lui sont associés. The written words, photography or cinema can reveal certain aspects of it but hardly convey the sensations, affects - negative or positive - and collective and cultural issues associated with it. Because it articulates images, that are not only figurative, and text uses original graphic codes, sequential art could be able to offer a deeper understanding. From excerpts of five recent works, this article tries to illustrate and analyze the representation and the transmission (from the worker to the draftsman, then from the draftsman to the reader) of the beautiful gesture, of the sensations and feelings (including social) which are associated to it.

International audience; The implementation of performance measurement systems in public or private organizations as a management method reduces work's meaning and weakens the rules of the trade. This induces resistance from employees and work collectives. However, in some cases, the figure can become an important reference for employees. The case of two policemen from a community police brigade and a scene from contemporary music (SMAC), resulting from two qualitative research (observations and interviews), illustrate the link between attachment to quantitative activity measurement and the difficulty of building together a positive and rewarding sense of work. Comparison with other work collectives in similar organizations highlights the limits and risks of self-worth through figures.; La mise en place d'indicateurs d'activité dans les organisations publiques ou privées comme mode de management produit une réduction du sens du travail et une fragilisation des règles de métier. Cela induit des résistances de la part des salariés et des collectifs de travail. Pourtant, dans certains cas, le chiffre peut devenir une référence importante pour les salariés. Les cas de deux policiers d'une brigade de police de proximité et d'une scène de musiques actuelles (SMAC), issus de deux recherches qualitatives (observations et entretiens), illustrent le lien entre l'attachement aux résultats quantitatifs d'activité et la difficulté à construire ensemble un sens positif et valorisant au travail. La comparaison avec d'autres collectifs de travail dans des organisations du même type permet de mettre en évidence les limites et les risques d'une valorisation de soi par les chiffres.

Since 2005, in the European working conditions survey (EWCS), a question is asked about harassment at work. Many more workers complain in France than in Italy. Objective differences in violence are not sufficient to explain this large gap in harassment complaints. One has to consider the perception and social regulation of violence, difficulties and conflicts at work. This article is pursuing two goals at the same time. The first is a theoretical goal, in order to move beyond cultural comparisons, to highlight the role of social institutions and regulations in the perception of harassment and to show that harassment is socially constructed in different ways in these countries. The second is an empirical one: to more accurately describe and explain the harassment phenomenon in France and Italy. A cultural approach is frequently used in International comparisons, but it is enough to be able to understand why French workers complain much more about harassment than Italian ones. That's why we also take a societal approach to look at the interactions between educational systems, social interactions, and hierarchical relations at work and the reason why the label of “moral harassment” covers a wider range of situations for French EWCS's respondents than for Italian ones.

The aim of this research is to analyse the phenomenon of workplace bullying in two countries: Italy and France and trying to understand the differences among them. The words used to refer to it are respectively "mobbing" in Italy and "harcèlement moral" in France. The research analyse the phenomenon's characteristics through the opinion of an expert sample, belonging to different areas linked to their cultural background. They were selected by the researchers for their expertise and experience on this topic. The tool used was a semi-structured interview conducted in vivo by the researcher. The data resulting were processed as follow: a qualitative analysis was conducted through the production of short synthesis for each interview; a quantitative analysis was conducted through the attempt to standardize the qualitative answers in percentage data. The results shows the existence of different phenomenon's characteristics in the two countries.Il presente lavoro di ricerca indaga il fenomeno del “workplace bullying” in due paesi, l’Italia e la Francia. Il focus della ricerca sono le caratterizzazioni e la rappresentazione sociale del fenomeno, sono indagate le differenze nella definizione condivisa nel panorama scientifico e i suoi diversi aspetti tra cui le conseguenze e l’origine di esso. I termini utilizzati per riferirsi al fenomeno nei due paesi sono rispettivamente “mobbing” e “harcèlement moral”. L’indagine utilizza le opinioni di testimoni privilegiati appartenenti a diverse aree professionali. Gli esperti sono selezionati dai ricercatori per la loro expertise in materia. Lo strumento utilizzato è un’intervista semistrutturata costruita ad hoc e somministrata in vivo dallo sperimentatore. I dati sono stati elaborati come segue: analisi qualitativa mediante la raccolta °e la sintesi in testi brevi delle risposte; analisi quantitativa mediante un tentativo di standardizzazione delle risposte qualitative in dati percentuali. I risultati mostrano l’esistenza di diverse caratterizzazioni del fenomeno nei due paesi di riferimento.

Fatigue, anxiety, harassment, burnout, stress, etc., the psychosocial risk category brings together multidimensional (physiological, psychological, social...) heterogeneous and complex problems and pathological entities. These aspects are also associated with significant ideological and socio-economic issues (employer liability, cost to the community ...). Thus, how can we make sense of this increase in complaints? Is work harder now than it used to be?

Les émotions font l’objet d’un regain d’intérêt scientifique depuis les années 1980. Neurologistes, psychiatres, psychologues ont parfois défini les émotions comme des phénomènes neurophysiologiques et psychologiques internes aux individus. Cette ontologie est liée à la volonté d’attester de la matérialité de ces phénomènes (par exemple par l’imagerie médicale), comme si les méthodes devaient définir l’objet. Si l’on considère au contraire les émotions comme des processus complexes, mis en forme et gérés dans le cadre d’interactions sociales contextualisées, des méthodes plus qualitatives et ouvertes (observations in situ et entretiens approfondis) sont un complément nécessaire pour en saisir les significations, les enjeux et les régulations. En m’appuyant sur mes recherches auprès de diplomates et de policiers, j’illustre la pertinence de cette démarche pour opérationnaliser une notion qui fait sens à la fois dans les sciences de la vie et dans les sciences sociales, celle de coloration affective., Scientific interest in emotions has been growing since the 1980s. Neurologists, psychiatrists and psychologists have sometimes defined emotions as neurophysiological and psychological phenomena that are internal to individuals. This ontology is linked to a desire to show that these phenomena are material (for example, using medical imaging), as if the methods should define the subject. If, on the other hand, we consider emotions to be complex processes that are shaped and managed within a framework of contextualized social interactions, then methods that are more qualitative and open (field observations and in-depth interviews) are an essential component if we are going to understand their signification, the issues involved and how they are regulated. I rely on my research with diplomats and police officers to illustrate how relevant this is if we are to operationalize a notion that makes sense in both the life sciences and the social sciences, that of affective colouring.

Over the last three decades, stress and other forms of suffering at work (including burnout, mobbing, bullying and issues relating to the work-life balance) have emerged as important social and medical issues in Western countries. Despite the lack of empirical data supporting the clinical, biological and psychological causes of stress, most experts, academics and stakeholders in the stress management field behave as if stress were an objective illness, clearly diagnosable and definable in different social and cultural situations. On the contrary, researches gathered in this book show how perception of stressors and stress processes is embedded both in macro-social and micro-social contexts. These context frame actors’ strategies created and actors construct the situations: in that way, stress and suffering at work can be understood as the result of management practices, labour union strategies, the innovative theories of psychologists or doctors, news magazine articles, public health policies and so on.

In any given country, various professional groups in different places and at different times resort to various uses of stress discourses and stress theories expressing their suffering at work and labeling their problems. Individual and collective strategies for managing and coping with difficulties at work also vary. The experience and the effect of potentially stressful events cannot be grasped unless one understands the social construction process of occupational stress and suffering and what workers can do to tackle these issues in the workplace (i.e., changing the stressful condition or constructing differently the meaning of difficulties and stress). This process involves a circular relation between the invention and dissemination of a new category or label (stress, burnout, etc.), the definition and the negotiation of the situation, the labeling or categorization of a person or an event and the moral career of persons or events before and after they are categorized.

International audience; Workers in cultural industries often express that they are passionate about their work. Passion may be an opportunity to gain more pleasure and well-being at work. However, it may also lead to over-involvement and self-exploitation. Contrary to traditional analyses mainly based on psychological dimensions, this article tries to demonstrate how collective construction of shared and sustainable ideals at work, including some motivating and realistic goals, help workers to manage their passion and successfully combine interest in work and regulation of their involvement in their jobs. The small size of SMACs allow for a precise study of the social regulation of passion. Social regulation is the collective construction of meaning and rules about the way work should be done. This paper is based on a qualitative study (observations and interviews) of three structures in the world of current popular music in order to show the effects of formal and informal organization.

National audience; L’idée d’interroger l’usage du vocabulaire de la « passion au travail » par les salariés a été encouragée par une enquête collective sur les métiers de la diplomatie réalisée à la demande de la DRH du ministère des Affaires étrangères et Européennes (MAEE). Lors des entretiens menés avec des agents du ministère des Affaires étrangères, environ 80 occurrences spontanées des mots « passion », « passionnant », « passionné » ont pu être notées sur près de 120 entretiens analysés . Cette proportion est plus élevée que lors d’enquêtes antérieures portant sur d’autres métiers (infirmières, policiers). Pourquoi les diplomates rencontrés déclarent si souvent faire un travail « passionnant », vivre le travail comme une « passion », être « passionnés » par ce qu’ils font ? Que signifie la passion au travail dans leurs réponses ? Les diplomates ont le sentiment d’avoir auprès du public une image de privilégié, profitant d’un cadre de travail luxueux et plaisant, loin de l’image classique du travail comme peine et labeur. Un certain nombre des diplomates rencontrés se disent d’ailleurs eux-mêmes « privilégiés » de faire le métier qu’ils exercent. » Dés lors, La mise en avant dans les discours d’un engagement élevé (objectif et subjectif) dans le travail, des horaires chargés, voire de l’hyperactivité permet de relativiser les « privilèges » des diplomates. Il pourrait s’agir également d’une forme d’auto-persuasion, d’intériorisation d’une contrainte et d’une injonction à l’engagement et à la motivation : face à une mission dont le sens et la reconnaissance peuvent être problématiques et dans le cadre d’un métier fait à la fois de grandeurs et de servitudes, il peut être nécessaire de se remotiver, mais aussi de justifier aux yeux d’autrui son utilité et les efforts consentis.

International audience; There has been renewed interest in France in the concepts of suffering and ill-being at work since the late 1990s. A rising number of claims have been filed in this area. The media have often reported on people committing suicide at their workplace, on new legal mechanisms in this field, and on related issues. Many terms and names of clinical categories used when discussing suffering and ill-being at work are in fact foreign terms (mainly from North America) taken over into French (for instance "stress", "burn out", and the Japanese "karochi"). Importing foreign words is neither automatic, nor a simple "copy/paste". Some categories such as the American "chronic fatigue syndrome" or the Japanese karoshi are regarded as exotic labels which seldom concern the French. Other labels, such as stress or burnout, became popular much later than in Anglo-Saxon countries. When smuggling in these "illnesses" defined in other countries, French researchers sometimes tried to leave their own mark on nosography, especially by suggesting a new name they thought would be more appropriate. For example, Pierre Jannet turned neurasthenia into psychasthenia, and more recently the French rheumatologist Marcel Francis Kahn replaced fibromyalgia with the Diffuse Idiopathic Polyalgic Syndrome (DIPS, SPID in French). This chapter contains three case studies on stress, burnout and the concepts of psychological harassment, mobbing and bullying, and will look at the way French researchers and social actors took hold of, translated, and adapted for the purposes of French national concerns, terms and concepts which were coined in other countries. On each occasion, these terms and concepts were "sneaked in" by actors, organisations or mediation forums which acted as vectors or supported the new terminology. They sometimes acted as veritable "moral entrepreneurs" in Becker's sense of the term, by popularizing and supporting the idea of a new pathology, even that of a new social ill, whether in symposiums, conferences, articles in scientific journals or popular science articles, and when advising and training social actors and policy-makers. However, for a term or a clinical category to be successful, doctors, psychologists, patients, managers or workers should be able to identify with it or recognize the illnesses of the people they are to deal with. The terminology and the implicit or explicit theories conveyed by it must be meaningful to these various actors. Its meaning, and the interests underlying it, may be heterogeneous or may even diverge. Relatively implicit or vague compromises, and an evolving balance of power will reflect the success and outcome of the different terms. The acclimatisation of these terms to the French context, their legitimization by various players (unions, the media, politicians, the scientific community), and their linguistic and social translation, lie at the heart of this chapter.

Fatigue is complex, representing simultaneously a physiological, psychological and social phenomenon. The sociological approach attempts to understand the experience of fatigue and its characterization at diverse periods and in various social contexts. After giving a sociological history of different forms of fatigue through the ages (acedia, melancholy, neurasthenia, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc.), this article proposes a social epidemiology of fatigue in the current period. Objectification of working and living conditions allows us to illustrate social inequalities in fatigue and exhaustion, but seems to contradict dominant social representations of fatigue today. It invites a critical discussion of contemporary theories of fatigue (such those of Alain Ehrenberg or Byung-Chul Han), which consider that fatigue is a condition of modern man, overwhelmed by his freedom. More modestly, analysis of the fatigue presented here rests on the capacity to be able to find a good balance between too much investment in work or life (which is exhausting) and not enough investment (which leads to boredom and lack of self-fulfillment). This balance depends on fragile and specific social norms in different professional or social circles and cannot be defined a priori.

Dans l’espace public francais, l’attention a ete largement portee ces dernieres annees sur les effets deleteres des nouvelles formes d’organisation du travail. Le stress, la souffrance, le burn out, les risques psychosociaux, les suicides sont des thematiques qui mobilisent experts, medias et hommes politiques. Qu’ont a dire les sciences sociales a ce sujet ? Plusieurs reponses sont ici proposees. Elles opposent au premier chef les chercheurs qui regardent les maux du travail comme des constructions sociales a ceux qui les analysent comme les implications du mouvement d’intensification de l’activite productive.

La « prévention primaire » vise l'élimination ou le contrôle des facteurs de risque présents dans le milieu du travail en agissant sur l'organisation et les conditions de travail. La « prévention secondaire » doit aider les salariés à mieux gérer les contraintes (apprendre à faire face aux conflits, relaxation, hygiène de vie, etc.). La « prévention tertiaire », enfin correspond à la prise en charge psychologique ou médicale de ceux qui ont été mis à mal par le travail. Si l'ergonome ou le sociologue des organisations sont invités à prêter leur concours à la mise en place de la prévention primaire, c'est au médecin et surtout au psychologue qu'il reviendrait de prendre en charge les préventions secondaires et tertiaires. Cette façon d'aborder le stress n'est adaptée ni à la complexité du monde du travail, ni à la compréhension de l'expérience des difficultés par les salariés; car la capacité à faire face aux stresseurs, surmonter les contraintes du travail, est largement une affaire collective et d'organisation du travail.

While dominant approaches to stress and coping focus on individual responses, field studies show that strategies of adaptation to difficult and harmful work conditions are partly collective. The notion of collective coping takes interactions and group behavior into greater account than the concepts of social support. The collective forms of coping are parts of the mediation between potential stressors due to work organization and health trouble. This analysis approaches stress as a social construction and contributes to a better understanding of the meaning of stress in different occupational groups. Examples from industrial workers and police officers (based on c.120 interviews) illustrate the different configurations of collective resistance and show how its weakening may explain, among different causes, the rise of stress complaints within these groups.

Remettre l'usager, parfois qualifie de client, au centre des preoccupations est devenu la pierre de touche des reformes de nombreux services publics. L'exemple des policiers de Securite publique (brigades de Police Secours, anti-criminalite, et de proximite) montre toutefois que la notion d'usager peut recouvrir des significations tres specifiques en fonction des valeurs et des objectifs defendus par le groupe professionnel. La categorisation (et la representation) des auteurs de crimes ou delits, de leurs victimes ou des simples citoyens participe de la construction de ce que doit etre « le vrai travail policier » en disqualifiant et stigmatisant ceux qui ne « rentrent pas dans le jeu ».

Tiredness is a frequent complaint in the labour sphere, but difficult to analyse. Works that sought to produce an explanatory theory of tiredness ran up indeed against the subjective and multidimensional dimension of the phenomenon. From there comes the will of many specialists in tiredness at work to concentrate their studies on what would constitute the psychosocial dimension of tiredness in the industrialized and tertiarized economies: boredom, monotony and mental suffering. If these researches made it possible to widen our comprehension of the question of tiredness at work, they remain marked by an implicit representation of a human being equipped with invariant psychological and social needs. Thus they do not make it possible to account for the variations in the meaning of the various difficulties the workers meet, nor in the imposition of the feeling of discomfort which might result. A more constructivist approach, holding into account the collective representations, the stakes and the specific balance of power to each professional environment, shows that the categories used to think tiredness at work and the experience of this tiredness by the employees are not easily dissociable. The examples of the musculo-skeletal disorders in the industrial companies and of the burn out of the hospital nurses make it possible to illustrate the complexity of the interactions between specific forms of expression of tiredness and particular contexts of work.; La fatigue est une plainte fréquente dans le monde du travail, mais difficile à analyser. Les travaux ayant cherché à produire une théorie explicative de la fatigue se sont en effet heurtés à la dimension subjective et multidimensionnelle du phénomène. D'où la volonté de nombreux spécialistes de la fatigue au travail de centrer leurs travaux sur ce qui constituerait la dimension psychosociale de la fatigue dans les économies industrialisées et tertiarisées : l'ennui, la monotonie et la souffrance morale. Si ces recherches ont permis d'élargir notre compréhension de la question de la fatigue au travail, elles restent marquées par une représentation implicite d'un être humain doté de besoins psychologiques et sociaux invariants. Elles ne permettent donc pas de rendre compte des variations dans le sens attribué aux différentes difficultés rencontrées par les salariés ni dans la mise en forme du malaise qui en découle éventuellement. Une approche plus constructiviste, tenant compte des représentations collectives, des enjeux et des rapports de force propres à chaque milieu professionnel, montre que les catégories mises en œuvre pour penser la fatigue au travail et le vécu de cette fatigue par les salariés sont difficilement dissociables. Les exemples des troubles musculo-squelettiques dans les entreprises industrielles et du burn out des infirmières hospitalières permettent d'illustrer la complexité des interactions entre des formes spécifiques d'expression de la fatigue et des contextes de travail particuliers.
