Abstract

The role of preprints in the scientific production and their part in citations have been growing over the past 10 years. In this paper we study preprint citations in several different aspects: the progression of preprint citations over time, their relative frequencies in relation to the IMRaD structure of articles, their distributions over time, per preprint database and per PLOS journal. We have processed the PLOS corpus that covers 7 journals and a total of about 240,000 articles up to January 2021, and produced a dataset of 8460 preprint citation contexts that cite 12 different preprint databases. Our results show that preprint citations are found with the highest frequency in the Method section of articles, though small variations exist with respect to journals. The PLOS Computational Biology journal stands out as it contains more than three times more preprint citations than any other PLOS journal. The relative parts of the different preprint databases are also examined. While ArXiv and bioRxiv are the most frequent citation sources, bioRxiv’s disciplinary nature can be observed as it is the source of more than 70% of preprint citations in PLOS Biology, PLOS Genetics and PLOS Pathogens. We have also compared the lexical content of preprint citation contexts to the citation content to peer-reviewed publications. Finally, by performing a lexicometric analysis, we have shown that preprint citation contexts differ significantly from citation contexts of peer-reviewed publications. This confirms that authors make use of different lexical content when citing preprints compared to the rest of citations.

Abstract

In this paper, we consider sentences that contain multiple in-text references (MIR) and their position in the rhetorical structure of articles. We carry out the analysis of MIR in a large-scale dataset of about 80,000 research articles published by the Public Library of Science in 7 journals. We analyze two major characteristics of MIR: their positions in the IMRaD structure of articles and the number of in-text references that make up a MIR in the different journals. We show that MIR are rather frequent in all sections of the rhetorical structure. In the Introduction section, sentences containing MIR account for more than half of the sentences with references. We examine the syntactic patterns that are most used in the contexts of both multiple and single in-text references and show that they are composed, for the most part, of noun groups. We point out the specificity of the Methods section in this respect.

Zipf a mis en evidence des relations mathematiques simples, regroupees sous la denomination Loi de Zipf, concernant les regularites des frequences des mots dans un texte. Cette loi a suscite de la part des chercheurs de toute discipline une grande curiosite et alimente des les annees 1950 des debats dans la communaute scientifique. Qu’en est-il aujourd’hui, soixante-dix ans apres la publication de son celebre ouvrage Human behavior and the principle of least effort ?

International audience; This paper addresses the problem of building recommender systems for scientific papers based on the linguistic and contextual analysis of citation contexts. We explain the importance of taking into consideration citation contexts and the different methodologies that exist as well as the ways that citations impact recommender systems. We also discuss the limits of using citation contexts to generate recommendations.

Abstract

The problem of uncertainty in sciences is related to the discipline, to the object of study and to the methodologies used. However, taking into account scientific uncertainty is essential challenge for society, together with the need of creating tools for the analysis of scientific discourse. The problem that we address in this paper is the definition, typology and undestanding of uncertainty, through an interdisciplinary view. We aim at studying a corpus of scientific papers on climate change in order to construct an ontology of uncertainty in science., L'incertitude en sciences est une problématique de nature disciplinaire, liée à l'objet de l'étude et aux méthodologies mises en œuvre. Cependant, l'enjeu de traiter l'incertitude est essentiel sur le plan sociétal, rappelant la nécessité de disposer d'outils permettant l'analyse du discours scientifique, afin de répondre aux problématiques actuelles. La problématique que nous abordons ici est celle de la compréhension interdisciplinaire et conceptuelle de la notion d'incertitude à travers la constitution et l'étude d'un corpus d'articles scientifiques traitant du changement climatique.

Abstract

Aim The aim was to review the use and indications of cultured autologous epidermis (CAE) in extensive burns and to evaluate the efficiency of our strategy of burn treatment. Materials and methods This retrospective study comprised 15 years (1997–2012). Inclusion criteria : all patients who received CAE. Exclusion criteria : patients who died before complete healing and patients who received exclusively cultured allogeneic keratinocytes. Evaluation criteria were clinical. Time and success of wound healing after CAE graft were evaluated. Results A total of 63 patients were included with severity Baux score of 107 (from 70 to 140) and mean percentage of TBSA of 71% (from 40% to 97%). The CAE were used as Cuono method, in STSG donor sites and deep 2nd degree burns and in combination with large-meshed STSG (1:6–1:12) in extensively burned patients. Cuono method was used in 6 patients. The final take was 16% (0–30) because of the great fragility of the obtained epidermis. Nine patients with deep 2nd degree burns (mean TBSA 81%, from 60 to 97%) were successfully treated with only CAE without skin grafting. Combined technique (STSG meshed at 1:6–1:12 covered with CAE) was used in 27 patients (mean TBSA 69%, from 49% to 96%) with 85% success rate. Finally, donor sites treated with CAE in 49 patients could be harvested several times thanks to rapid epithelialization (time of wound healing was 7 days (from 5 to 10 days)). Conclusion The CAE allow rapid healing of STSG donor sites and deep 2nd second degree burns in extensively burned patients.

Abstract

EC3 is intended to extract relevant information from large heterogeneous and multilingual text data, in particular in WEB 3.0. The project is based on an original method: contextual exploration. EC3 does not need syntactic analysis, statistical analysis or a "general" ontology. EC3 uses only small ontologies called "linguistic ontologies" that express the linguistic knowledge of a user who must concentrate on the relevant information from one point of view. This is why EC3 works very quickly on large corpus, whose components can be both whole books as well as "short texts": SMS to books. At the output, EC3 offers a visual representation of information using an original approach: the "Memory Islands". EC3 is implanted in the ACASA / LIP6 team. EC3 is tested on the large digitized corpus provided by the Labex OBVIL «Observatoire de la Vie Litteraire», in partnership with the Bibliotheque Nationale de France (http://obvil.paris-sorbonne.fr/). OBVIL intends to develop all the resources offered by digitization and computer applications to examine French literature from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, English and American literature, Italian literature, Spanish literature, in its most traditional formats and media Or the most innovative.

Abstract

Using the full-text corpus of more than 75,000 research articles published by seven PLOS journals, this paper proposes a natural language processing approach for identifying the function of citations. Citation contexts are assigned based on the frequency of n-gram co-occurrences located near the citations. Results show that the most frequent linguistic patterns found in the citation contexts of papers vary according to their location in the IMRaD structure of scientific articles. The presence of negative citations is also dependent on this structure. This methodology offers new perspectives to locate these discursive forms according to the rhetorical structure of scientific articles, and will lead to a better understanding of the use of citations in scientific articles.
