Ten years ago the “emotional bidding framework” (Adam et al., Electronic Markets, 21(3), 197–207, 2011b) was published in this journal. It provided a conceptualization for the role of human emotion in electronic auctions along six propositions on how emotions emerge during the auction process and affect auction outcomes. While the framework emphasized the importance of immediate emotional responses and momentary changes in the bidders’ emotional state, the original article did not include an evaluation of its propositions given the limited data on how bidders experience emotions in the moment that they occur. Ten years on, advances in the growing research field of NeuroIS allow to evaluate the propositions based on neurophysiological evidence. As a rejoinder of the original article, the present paper synthesizes these insights, refines the framework further, and identifies fruitful areas for future research based on remaining gaps in the body of knowledge.

COVID-19 has had a significant impact on healthcare resources and the medical workforce. Clinically-based medical education is the principal source of learning, and this has been profoundly impacted by restrictions due to COVID-19. It follows that junior medical staff and their education would be significantly impacted due to the altered volume and breadth of their clinical exposure. Some literature has been published regarding the impact to medical training during COVID-19. This study sought to review junior medical staff perceptions and their reported impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their education and training. Nine databases (three Ovid MEDLINE databases, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Educational Resources Information Centre and PsychINFO) were searched for studies published in 1 January 2020 through 24 August 2020. Via a scoping review protocol, an iterative process was used to perform the identification, review and charting analysis of the reported outcomes and themes. Descriptive analysis was performed using quantitative and qualitative methods. Of the 25 343 sources identified, 32 were included in the review. There were studies published from nearly all continents, predominantly in surgical journals, with a wide spread of specialties. Themes identified included the current impact of the pandemic in relation to continuation of and modifications to training programmes, as well as the future impact due to training requirements and career progression. Junior medical staff report that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on their education and training. Whether the changes imposed by the pandemic on education are temporary measures or permanent fixtures, and whether standards of competence may be impacted, is not yet known. This scoping review forms a basis for further investigation in the field.

Introduction: The use of computed tomography (CT) imaging of the cervical spine (CS) is now the recommended primary screening modality for suspected CS injuries following trauma. The aim of this audit is to review the appropriate use of CS CT imaging in the emergency department (ED) and assess compliance with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) head injury clinical guidelines. Methods: Charts were reviewed for the last 50 trauma patients to receive a CS CT scan following a request from the ED at University Hospital Limerick between 10 July 2013 and 19 December 2013. The NICE clinical guideline 176 on head injury was used as the standard of care. These data were used to perform a retrospective audit to assess patients who satisfied NICE criteria to qualify for a CS CT scan. Results: 45 patients who had undergone a CS CT scan were identified, this group had a mean age of 42 years and 71% of them were male. At least one of the NICE guideline criteria was fulfilled in 100% of patients who had a CS CT, with 2.64 of the criteria fulfilled on average. Plain-film X-ray radiography (PF) was inadequate for diagnosis in 20 (44.4%) patients. Discussion: ED consultants appropriately refer patients for CS CT scans following CS trauma and adhere to NICE head injury clinical guidelines. Conclusion: Having guidelines in place in the ED and adopting CS CT imaging as an initial screening modality following CS injury may reduce time to definitive care and improve resource implications.

Neben der Steigerung der Agilitat des Fahrzeugs, kann vor allem der Kraftstoffverbrauch reduziert werden. Hierbei bietet das Fertigungsverfahren des Aluminium-Druckgusses eine effektive Moglichkeit zur Gewichtsreduzierung von Aggregate- und Karosseriebauteilen, [1], [2], [3], [4]. Damit die Herstellung dieser Leichtbauprodukte wirtschaftlich realisiert werden kann, ist die Produktivitat des Gussprozesses entscheidend.

The issue of job insecurity and its impact on employee's sense of well-being remains an under-researched topic. The objective of this paper is to utilise the HILDA dataset to show how job insecurity impacts on mental health outcomes. An important feature of the HILDA survey is that it enables an examination of the relationship between the level of job insecurity and mental health outcomes at a given point in time as well as how changes over time in job insecurity impact on mental health outcomes for the employed. The results suggest that a strong and significant relationship exists between job insecurity and employee mental health outcomes.

A 26-year old athlete suffered a full thickness tear of the Achilles tendon. After initial casting, biological reconstruction by prolotherapy was undertaken. A satisfactory result in terms of function and imaging is reported, at four months follow-up.

Multicast services, assisted by special hardware, are being considered as a part of high-speed wide-area networks (WANs) in order to support new generations of multiuser applications. This paper describes an application multicast service for high-speed WANs which is capable of exploiting multicast hardware. Indeed, this research was conducted in context of the spanning tree hardware structure of PARIS and of plaNET, the pioneering broadband experimental networks that predated ATM. The results of this research were also included in IBM's ATM, called Networking BroadBand Services (NBBS).We achieve modularity and low cost by assigning to distinct components the separate problems of: 1) naming groups; 2) finding group members in a network; 3) configuring multicast hardware; and 4) delivering multicast messages in sequence. This modularity enables, for example, both the multicast to a group to which the user initiates the joining (formed by using 1 and 2 above), on one hand, and to groups computed by the source on the other hand. We give the overall organization of our service and then describe in detail the methods used to solve the first two of the subproblems.

A control architecture for a high-speed packet-switched network is described. The architecture was designed and implemented as part of the PARIS (subsequently plaNET and BBNS) networking project at IBM. This high bandwidth network for integrated communication (data, voice, video) is currently operational as a laboratory prototype. It will also be deployed within the AURORA Testbed that is part of the NSF/DARPA gigabit networking program. The high bandwidth dictates the need for specialized hardware to support faster packet handling for both point-to-point and multicast connections. A faster and more efficient network control is also required in order to support the increased number of connections and their changing requirements with time. The new network control architecture presented exploits specialized hardware, thereby enabling tasks to be performed faster and with less computation overhead. In particular, since control information can be distributed quickly using hardware packet handling mechanisms, decisions can be made based upon more complete and accurate information. In some respects, this has the effect of having the benefits of centralized control (e.g., easier bandwidth resource allocation to connections), while retaining the fault tolerance and scalability of a distributed architecture. >

Typically, oracles used to test graphical user interface(GUI) programs highly depend on environmental factors that are not related to the functionality of the program, such as screen resolution and color schemes. To accommodate these on-functional variations, researchers suggested fuzzy comparison rules that determine whether the output of a GUI program matches the oracles. Others suggested computer vision based solutions that make use of computationally expensive image processing techniques to abstract the strict comparisons. Alternatively, we propose GUICOP, a system that checks whether a trace of a GUI execution violates a given GUI specification. GUICOP is composed of a GUI specification language, instrumented GUI libraries, and a checker. The alphabet of the specification language contains basic geometric shapes describing GUI components, events, and positional and temporal operators that express relative object positions and event timings, respectively. During program execution, the instrumented libraries capture positional and temporal information of components and associated triggered events in execution traces. The checker determines whether the traces satisfy the specifications. To evaluate GUICOP, we wrote 50 use cases that describe real GUI applications and used the GUICOP checker on the supported cases that successfully revealed violations.

This paper presents an overview of the plaNET/ORBIT Gigabit networking system being developed at IBM. It identifies the various network components and their functionality, and describes how the many services provided by the network are supported. The paper focuses on providing a general view on how the different components operate and interact with each other, rather than on giving detailed technical descriptions of their implementations. Instead, pointers to relevant publications are used to allow interested readers to find additional details.

cited By 14; This work aims to evaluate the efficiency of a calixarene emulsion for uranium extraction from a contaminated solution prior to apply such a delivery system to uranium skin decontamination. For this purpose, various experimental parameters that can influence the efficiency of the calixarene emulsion on uranium extraction were determined. The results show that the calixarene nanoemulsion effect can be observed after a very short time of contact with uranium-contaminated solution (5. min) and that it is still efficient in case of small volumes of contaminated solution. The pH of the contaminated solution was found to be the most important parameter affecting the calixarene nanoemulsion efficiency with a dramatic reduction of the uranium extraction rate in case of acidification of the contaminated medium. This lack of efficiency can be overcome by buffering the nanoemulsion continuous phase. The obtained results reveal that the calixarene nanoemulsion could represent a promising system for the emergency treatment of uranium cutaneous contamination. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

Policy-based file lifecycle management is important for balancing storage utilization and for regulatory conformance. It poses two important challenges, the need for simple yet effective policy design and an implementation that scales to billions of files. This paper describes the design and an innovative implementation technique of policy-based lifecycle management in a prototype built as a part of IBM's new SAN file system. The policy specification leverages a key abstraction in the file system called storage pools and its ability to support location independence for files. The policy implementation uses an innovative new technique that combines concurrent policy execution and a policy decisions cache, to enable scaling to billions of files under normal usage patterns.

We present a policy-based architecture STEPS for lifecycle management (LCM) in a mass scale distributed file system. The STEPS architecture is designed in the context of IBM's SAN file system (SFS) and leverages the parallelism and scalability offered by SFS, while providing a centralized point of control for policy-based management. The architecture uses novel concepts like policy cache and rate-controlled migration for efficient and non-intrusive execution of the LCM functions, while ensuring that the architecture scales with very large number of files. The architecture has been implemented and used for lifecycle management in a distributed deployment of SFS with heterogeneous data. We conduct experiments on the implementation to study the performance of the architecture. We observed that STEPS is highly scalable with increase in the number as well as the size of the file objects hosted by SFS. The performance study also demonstrated that most of the efficiency of policy execution is derived from policy cache. Further, a rate-control mechanism is necessary to ensure that users are isolated from LCM operations.

Event distribution middleware supports the integration of distributed applications by accepting events from information producers and disseminating applicable events to interested consumers. We present a flexible new model, the Information Flow Graph (IFG), for specifying the flow of information in such a system. We illustrate the use of the IFG for: content-based publish/subscribe; stateless event transformations that consolidate events from diverse sources; and stateful event interpretation functions for deriving trends, summaries, and alarms from published events and for defining equivalent event sequences. We introduce two techniques for efficient implementation of such systems: a flow graph rewriting optimization which allows stateless IFGs to be converted to a form which can exploit efficient multicast technology developed for content-based publish/subscribe system; and an algorithm for converting a sequence of events to the shortest equivalent sequence of events with respect to an event interpretation function.

Cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is one of the most important error-detection schemes used in digital communications. A new parallel algorithm for CRC generation and its software as well as hardware implementation is described. For the software implementation, this paper has focused on the 32-bit CRC used in the Ethernet, computed on a general purpose PowerPC microprocessor with the new AltiVec technology. A speedup by a factor of 4.57 over the standard table-lookup algorithm was obtained. A hardware implementation of the algorithm is then discussed, which yields an unlimited speed-up potential over the bit-wise serial algorithm.

Today, information is distributed on the Internet and other communication infrastructures mainly for free. However, once information or digital contents is assigned some value, a means is needed to protect its copyrights and control its use.

Environmental Context.The contamination of public water supplies by drug residues is an issue of importance for public health. While soil may act as a natural filter to remove some contaminants from groundwater, there is a lack of information on the fate and transport of pharmaceutical residues during groundwater recharge. In this study, the fate and the transport of eight drug residues during groundwater recharge of contaminated surface water which was investigated at an artificial groundwater replenishment plant in Berlin, Germany, as part of the international collaboration NASRI (Natural and Artificial Systems for Recharge and Infiltration). The study shows that some of the contaminants would indeed end up in the water supply if the water only underwent normal groundwater recharge. Abstract.Recently, several new types of organic contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and their metabolites have been found in sewage or surface waters. Some of the polar pharmaceuticals have also been detected in samples of ground and drinking water, especially when water from induced recharge is used for drinking water production. The fate and the transport of eight drug residues during groundwater recharge (GWR) of contaminated surface water was investigated at an artificial groundwater replenishment plant in Berlin, Germany. After a recharge distance of only a few meters, bezafibrate, a blood lipid regulator, and indomethacin, an analgesic, were removed below their detection limits. Clofibric acid, a metabolite of blood lipid lowering agents, and the analgesic drugs diclofenac and propyphenazone were also attenuated during GWR. However, they were still detectable in the receiving water supply wells at low concentration levels (≤ 40 ng L–1). The anti-epileptic drugs carbamazepine and primidone and the drug metabolite AMDOPH (1-acetyl-1-methyl-2-dimethyl-oxamoyl-2-phenylhydrazide) were not significantly affected by GWR occurring in the water supply wells at mean individual concentrations between 100 and 1570 ng L–1.

A sound reproduction device or a microphone comprising an enclosure (2) which is made of a substantially gas permeable flexible material and an electrical transducer (1) which has at least one connection (4, 5) with the enclosure, and usually two connections, to impart movement to the enclosure where the device acts as a loud speaker or to receive movement of the enclosure to generate an electrical signal where the device acts as a microphone. The enclosure is adapted to be stressed by internal pressure and forms a concavity centred on at least one of the connections with the electrical transducer, which concavity acts as an acoustic diaphragm.
