BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented stress on economies, food systems, and health care resources in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Existing surveillance provides a proxy of the COVID-19 caseload and mortalities; however, these measures make it difficult to identify the dynamics of the pandemic and places where outbreaks are likely to occur. Moreover, existing surveillance techniques have failed to measure the dynamics of the pandemic. ObjectiveThis study aimed to provide additional surveillance metrics for COVID-19 transmission to track changes in the speed, acceleration, jerk, and persistence in the transmission of the pandemic more accurately than existing metrics. MethodsThrough a longitudinal trend analysis, we extracted COVID-19 data over 45 days from public health registries. We used an empirical difference equation to monitor the daily number of cases in the LAC as a function of the prior number of cases, the level of testing, and weekly shift variables based on a dynamic panel model that was estimated using the generalized method of moments approach by implementing the Arellano–Bond estimator in R. COVID-19 transmission rates were tracked for the LAC between September 30 and October 6, 2020, and between October 7 and 13, 2020. ResultsThe LAC saw a reduction in the speed, acceleration, and jerk for the week of October 13, 2020, compared to the week of October 6, 2020, accompanied by reductions in new cases and the 7-day moving average. For the week of October 6, 2020, Belize reported the highest acceleration and jerk, at 1.7 and 1.8, respectively, which is particularly concerning, given its high mortality rate. The Bahamas also had a high acceleration at 1.5. In total, 11 countries had a positive acceleration during the week of October 6, 2020, whereas only 6 countries had a positive acceleration for the week of October 13, 2020. The TAC displayed an overall positive trend, with a speed of 10.40, acceleration of 0.27, and jerk of –0.31, all of which decreased in the subsequent week to 9.04, –0.81, and –0.03, respectively. ConclusionsMetrics such as new cases, cumulative cases, deaths, and 7-day moving averages provide a static view of the pandemic but fail to identify where and the speed at which SARS-CoV-2 infects new individuals, the rate of acceleration or deceleration of the pandemic, and weekly comparison of the rate of acceleration of the pandemic indicate impending explosive growth or control of the pandemic. Enhanced surveillance will inform policymakers and leaders in the LAC about COVID-19 outbreaks.

The quality of graduate teachers is a significant concern for teacher educators, policymakers and the public. Initiatives regarding the quality assurance of initial teacher education (ITE) programs require critical examination to ensure that ITE programs develop proficient graduate teachers to meet the demands of modern classrooms. In this paper, we draw on Biesta's (2015, 2019, 2020) theoretical framing of purpose in education (i.e., qualification, socialisation and subjectification) to analyse the policy texts related to graduate teaching performance assessment from institutions involved in the creation and implementation of the Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) in ITE in Australia. Researchers used document analysis to examine the publicly stated purpose of the TPA. The analysis revealed that the relevant policy texts focused much more on qualification (81%) than socialisation (8%) and subjectification (11%). The findings imply that the TPA policies may contribute to narrowing the ITE curriculum and the subsequent thwarting of teacher subjectification.

Autistic children and adolescents often have greater difficulty engaging in deception than their non-autistic peers. However, deception in autistic adulthood has received little attention to date. This study examined whether autistic and non-autistic adults differed in their inclination to lie in everyday situations and the factors that underpin this. Forty-one autistic and 41 non-autistic participants completed self-report measures relating to their inclination to lie, ability to lie and moral attitudes about the acceptability of lying. Participants also undertook a reaction-time test of lie-telling, as well as theory of mind and working memory measures. Autistic and non-autistic adults did not significantly differ in their inclination to lie in everyday situations. The degree to which lying was viewed as morally acceptable positively predicted both groups' inclination to lie. The remaining factors underpinning the inclination to lie differed between groups. Lower self-rated lying ability and slower lie speed predicted a reduced inclination to lie in autistic participants, whereas higher theory of mind and working memory capacity predicted a reduced inclination to lie in the non-autistic group. Implications for our understanding of deception in autistic and non-autistic adults are discussed.

Abstract Manipulated media – images, video, and audio – have proliferated online. Widely available modification software, rudimentary practices, and advanced techniques involving machine learning and artificial intelligence have been used to manipulate media. This article critically explores illegal and nonconsensual nude and sexually explicit (NSE) deepfakes and the measures implemented to counter them. The motivating questions for this analysis are: What measures are in place to counter illegal and nonconsensual NSE deepfakes? Are these measures sufficient? The objectives of this article are three-fold: (1) to identify illegal and nonconsensual NSE deepfakes and illegal uses of them; (2) to critically evaluate the current legal and technological countermeasures available in various jurisdictions to combat illicit and nonconsensual NSE deepfakes; and (3) to make recommendations based on challenges and deficits in existing legal and technological mechanisms employed to tackle them. Ultimately, our findings indicate that there are technologies and legal measures that could effectively reduce the harm experienced by victims if: there is a collective will from the corporate, legislative, and political spheres to effectively execute these changes; and legal liability to remove NSE deepfakes is placed on the online platforms and websites that host and distribute this content.

Employment interviews can be challenging for autistic people. In addition to standard interview procedures often being inaccessible, features associated with autism (including atypical emotional expression, eye-contact, and gestures) may lead to negative first impressions. Research using vignettes and 'thin slices' of communication indicate that perceptions of an autistic individual can be improved when their autism diagnosis is disclosed. Here, we examined the impact of diagnostic disclosure on judgements of autistic adults undergoing an entire mock employment interview. A total of 119 participants (known as 'raters') watched a video of an autistic candidate's mock employment interview, after which they provided overall impressions of the candidate on factors such as confidence, motivation, and knowledgeability. Raters were either (1) unaware of the interviewee's diagnosis, (2) aware of their diagnosis, or (3) aware of their diagnosis and provided with information about autism. Results indicate that diagnostic disclosure improved perceptions of autistic candidates across all dimensions compared to when raters were unaware of their diagnosis. The provision of additional information about the diagnosis did not further improve ratings. The findings have important implications for employers and autistic people, who should consider the potential impact of diagnostic disclosure prior to interviewing for a role.

We compare epistemologies and aesthetics in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and the Australian New South Wales Stage 6 Visual Arts Syllabus, focusing on curriculum content, pedagogical praxis, and assessment strategies. Both curricula feature making, reflexivity, and critique. International Baccalaureate components are Exhibition, the Process Portfolio, and the Comparative Study. In New South Wales Visual Arts they are the Body of Work and Visual Diary. Issues are the teacher as curriculum; uneven resources; shifting contexts and formulating standardized expectations. In both, qualitative assessment and examination are achieved via articulating criteria and levels of achievement, and examiner training. In International Baccalaureate, what counts as good work can vary in relation to Principal Examiner standards, particularities of context, pedagogy, and resources, with work ranging from sophisticated installations, to anime, to the school art style. In New South Wales Visual Art aesthetic conventions are reinforced because the system is less distributed than International Baccalaureate, where aesthetics become engrained, perpetuating conventions around what counts as good art. In spite of supervening assessment structures, teaching, learning, and assessment in visual arts education is always highly qualitative, unfolding, and rooted in the situated shifting conditions and ways of being in the world of each teacher, student, artwork, examiner, artist, and scholar.

In this study, 3D design products of pre-service science teachers were evaluated, and the opinions of the candidates regarding the 3D design process and the design products they created were investigated. This study is a case study of qualitative research designs. The research was carried out with 48 pre-service science teachers studying as sophomores at the education faculty of a university in Turkey. The research was carried out in the course named General Biology Practices II in 7 weeks as three classes per week. As data collection tools in the research, a interview form was used to obtain the opinions of pre-service teachers and rubrics prepared in line with the criteria that should be found in 3D designs and the design process. As a result of the research, it was found that pre-service teachers had a sufficient performance, and created good designs while establishing 3D design products. Candidates gave a positive opinion regarding the 3D design process. In particular, they stated that the implementation process helped the improvement of 3D thinking ability, thereby gaining different perspectives. They also stated that 3D design products created could be used as teaching materials.

Cyber-enabled fraud has transformed, becoming more complex and making it harder for targets and law enforcement to detect its occurrence. This study aims to recontextualize a major manifestation of this transformation, a crime called hybrid investment fraud, colloquially known as pig butchering. Hybrid investment fraud describes a cyber-enabled fraud whereby criminals gain the trust of victims by forming connections and relationships, and then exploit this trust by using a series of confidence building and coercive measures designed to encourage victims to continuously invest in securities or commodities until they become unable or unwilling to continue to make payments or the offenders become unreachable. This study further aims to address the existing knowledge gap by focusing on understudied elements of this fraud, such victim and offender characteristics and the ways hybrid investment fraud is perpetrated. To achieve this, we conducted an in-depth analysis of more than 1,300 news articles and court documents between January 1, 2018, and November 1, 2023, to identify 59 cases of hybrid investment fraud targeting victims in the United States. This article both situates hybrid investment fraud within the broader fraud literature and conducts a comprehensive of analysis of hybrid investment fraud cases to identify the types of hybrid investment fraud committed, their impact, victim and offender demographics, and offenders’ tactics, tools, and methods of operation. The findings from this study can inform criminal justice practices and future research of this fraud.

Abstract Background Autism spectrum disorder (hereafter referred to as autism) is characterised by difficulties with (i) social communication, social interaction, and (ii) restricted and repetitive interests and behaviours. Estimates of autism prevalence within the criminal justice system (CJS) vary considerably, but there is evidence to suggest that the condition can be missed or misidentified within this population. Autism has implications for an individual’s journey through the CJS, from police questioning and engagement in court proceedings through to risk assessment, formulation, therapeutic approaches, engagement with support services, and long-term social and legal outcomes. Methods This consensus based on professional opinion with input from lived experience aims to provide general principles for consideration by United Kingdom (UK) CJS personnel when working with autistic individuals, focusing on autistic offenders and those suspected of offences. Principles may be transferable to countries beyond the UK. Multidisciplinary professionals and two service users were approached for their input to address the effective identification and support strategies for autistic individuals within the CJS. Results The authors provide a consensus statement including recommendations on the general principles of effective identification, and support strategies for autistic individuals across different levels of the CJS. Conclusion Greater attention needs to be given to this population as they navigate the CJS.

Introduction and Objectives: Hepatic proteome and gut microbiota alterations are known in alcohol-associated hepatitis (AAH). Current animal models sparsely mimic human AAH. We aimed to develop an murine model that closely resembled human AAH. Materials and Methods: Male C57BL/6N mice were pair-fed control/incremental ethanol Lieber-DeCarli diets and thioacetamide (TAA) for 12-weeks to induce AAH. Hepatic proteome was analyzed using LC-MS/MS. Gut-bacteria was determined using 16s-rRNA sequencing. Results: Mice exposed to EtOH+TAA displayed higher expression of liver triglycerides (1.5-fold, p = 0.001), pro-inflammatory (IL6, 1.5-fold, p = 0.002 and TNFα, 1.7-fold, p = 0.01), fibrotic (TGF-β, 2.7-fold, p = 0.01 and Col1α1, 2-fold, p = 0.01) and oxidative markers (GSH and SOD (-1.5 fold, p = 0.004 & 0.005 respectively)) as compared to EtOH alone. Histology of EtOH+TAA liver displayed pericellular liver fibrosis, increased steatosis, and neutrophil infiltration, which resembled human AAH. In the 12wk EtOH+TAA group, Desulfobacteria, Campylobacteria, and Patescibacteria increased by 2-fold (p = 0.02). Pathway combined score (CS, log10) in EtOH+TAA treatment showed upregulated hepatic ethanol oxidation (CS=1.93), fatty acid biosynthesis (CS=2.48), necrosis (CS=1.59), collagen formation (CS=1.28) and hypoxia (CS=0.68) and downregulated fatty acid beta-oxidation (CS=2.37), PPAR signaling (CS=1.35) fatty acid degradation (CS=2.35), bile acid metabolism (CS=1.87), and oxidative phosphorylation (CS=1.50), as observed in human disease. Conclusions: Using an ethanol-thioacetamide combination in mice results in a faster establishment of AAH with fibrosis than previously known models. Differential protein expression strongly correlates with pathways found altered in human AAH, thus making the model mimic human disease better than other known models., respectively. Thioacetamide (TAA) was administered to enhance liver fibrosis and mimic human AAH.

Carcinoma of the gall bladder (CAGB) has a poor prognosis. Molecular analysis of bile could classify indicators of CAGB. Bile samples (n = 87; training cohort) were screened for proteomics and metabolomics signatures of cancer detection. In bile, CAGB showed distinct proteomic (217 upregulated, 258 downregulated) and metabolomic phenotypes (111 upregulated, 505 downregulated, p 1.5, false discovery rate 0.5, p 90% (p 0.94. Validation of the top four metabolites—toluene, 5,6-DHET, creatine, and phenylacetaldehyde—in separate cohorts (n = 80; bile [T1] and paired plasma [T2]) showed accuracy (99%) and sensitivity/specificity (>98%) for CAGB detection. Stress is a major influence on mental health status; the ways that individuals respond to or copes with stressors determine whether they are negatively affected in the future. Stress responses are established by an interplay between genetics, environment, and life experiences. Psychosocial stress is particularly impactful during adolescence, a critical period for the development of mood disorders. In this study we compared two established, selectively-bred Sprague Dawley rat lines, the “internalizing” bred Low Responder (bLR) line versus the “externalizing” bred High Responder (bHR) line, to investigate how genetic temperament and adolescent environment impact future responses to social interactions and psychosocial stress, and how these determinants of stress response interact. Male bLR and bHR rats were exposed to social and environmental enrichment in adolescence prior to experiencing social defeat and were then assessed for social interaction and anxiety-like behavior. Adolescent enrichment caused rats to display more social interaction, as well as nominally less social avoidance, less submission during defeat, and resilience to the effects of social stress on corticosterone, in a manner that seemed more notable in bLRs. For bHRs, enrichment also caused greater aggression during a neutral social encounter and nominally during defeat, and decreased anxiety-like behavior. To explore the neurobiology underlying the development of social resilience in the anxious phenotype bLRs, RNA-seq was conducted on the hippocampus and nucleus accumbens, two brain regions that mediate stress regulation and social behavior. Gene sets previously associated with stress, social behavior, aggression and exploratory activity were enriched with differential expression in both regions, with a particularly large effect on gene sets that regulate social behaviors. Our findings provide further evidence that adolescent enrichment can serve as an inoculating experience against future stressors. The ability to induce social resilience in a usually anxious line of animals by manipulating their environment has translational implications, as it underscores the feasibility of intervention strategies targeted at genetically vulnerable adolescent populations.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which encompass pesticides and industrial chemicals widely utilized across the globe, pose a covert threat to human health. β-hexachlorocyclohexane (β-HCH) is an organochlorine pesticide with striking stability, still illegally dumped in many countries, and recognized as responsible for several pathogenetic mechanisms. This study represents a pioneering exploration into the neurotoxic effects induced by the exposure to β-HCH specifically targeting neuronal cells (N2a), microglia (BV-2), and C57BL/6 mice. As shown by western blot and qPCR analyses, the administration of β-HCH triggered a modulation of NF-κB, a key factor influencing both inflammation and pro-inflammatory cytokines expression. We demonstrated by proteomic and western blot techniques epigenetic modifications in H3 histone induced by β-HCH. Histone acetylation of H3K9 and H3K27 increased in N2a, and in the prefrontal cortex of C57BL/6 mice administered with β-HCH, whereas it decreased in BV-2 cells and in the hippocampus. We also observed a severe detrimental effect on recognition memory and spatial navigation by the Novel Object Recognition Test (NORT) and the Object Place Recognition Task (OPRT) behavioural tests. Cognitive impairment was linked to decreased expression of the genes BDNF and SNAP-25, which are mediators involved in synaptic function and activity. The obtained results expand our understanding of the harmful impact produced by β-HCH exposure by highlighting its implication in the pathogenesis of neurological diseases. These findings will support intervention programs to limit the risk induced by exposure to POPs. Regulatory agencies should block further illicit use, causing environmental hazards and endangering human and animal health.

Bone tissue engineering (BTE) is a promising alternative approach to the repair of damaged bone tissue. This study aims to fabricate and characterize scaffolds composed of chitosan (CS), hyaluronic acid (HA), hydroxyapatite (HAp), and a combination of graphite (Gr), graphene oxide (GO), and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) for BTE applications. The Gr and MWCNT were functionalized by acid oxidation, while the GO was synthesized using the improved Hummers' method. The scaffolds were prepared by lyophilization, and the physical, chemical, and biological properties were evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, mechanical testing, water contact angle, degradation, and biocompatibility assays were used to characterize the scaffolds. The degradation rate was determined using the liquid displacement method. Pores of different sizes were present on the surface of and throughout the scaffold. According to the FTIR results, the scaffolds contained functional groups that promote cell differentiation and proliferation. These scaffolds have compressive strength, Young's modulus, and toughness similar to cancellous bone, with reasonable porosity and controllable degradation rates. Biocompatibility testing confirmed that the scaffolds support cell proliferation and differentiation.

It has often been pointed out that choral music played a not insignificant role in the fascist totalitarian project aimed at creating a “new man” (see, for example, Gentile 1993, Tarquini 20162, Bernhard and Klinkhammer 2017). Included by the Gentile reform (1923) among the compulsory subjects in primary and secondary schools and in the courses of teacher training schools, the practice of choral singing was also introduced in the Opera Nazionale Balilla, a youth organization, the Opera Nazionale del Dopolavoro, a leisure and recreational organization, and in the many public events of the regime (see, e.g., De Felice 1974; Scalfaro 2014). While this is not the appropriate place to chronicle and evaluate the development of vocal polyphony instruction in Italian schools and academies during this period, nor its educational -or rather “re-educational2 function in the Fascist sense- within the “Opere nazionali,” it is fair to say that its impact on Italian culture was not negligible. By narrowing the focus of my research, I aim to highlight the role that this renewed attention to choral singing - in pedagogical, socio-cultural, and political terms - played within the musicological discourse and artistic compositional practice of the time. I also aim to show what the interactions between pedagogy, theory, and musical practice were - and what impact, if any, they had. This brief survey may suggest further avenues of research, not only in historiography, but also in the contemporary discussion of the intersections between musicology, learned composition, and music education.

Emerging evidence in women supports the notion that pregnancy may reset disease resistance, thereby providing protection against subsequent adverse health outcomes, but this hypothesis has not been adequately explored in domestic dogs. Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is a degenerative orthopedic disease that frequently affects pet dogs, and its risk has been associated with disruption of the reproductive hormone axis. Our research team is conducting a lifetime cohort study of purebred Rottweilers in North America that have lived 30% longer than breed-average. Detailed medical and reproductive histories of 33 nulliparous and 32 parous Rottweilers were generated from questionnaires and review of medical records. Interviews with owners of bitches in the nulliparous group served to limit selection bias, confirming that in no instance was the reason for nulliparity based upon the owner’s suspicion that a bitch had a heightened risk for CCL rupture. The risk of CCL rupture associated with parity and other exposure variables was estimated using multivariate logistic regression. Overall, CCL rupture was diagnosed in 17 of 65 (26%) bitches. Median age at first litter and CCL rupture were 3.6 and 6.5 years, respectively. Compared to nulliparous, parous bitches had a significant 94% reduction in CCL rupture risk adjusted for duration of ovary exposure, overweight body condition, dietary pattern, habitual physical activity, and work/sport activity [ORadjusted (95% CI) = 0.06 (0.01–0.46); (p = 0.006)]. The observed parity-associated CCL rupture risk reduction remained robust in sensitivity analysis excluding six nulliparous bitches for which decision not to breed was based on diagnosis of hip or elbow dysplasia, conditions which may be genetically linked to CCL rupture [ORadjusted (95% CI) = 0.08 (0.01–0.58); (p = 0.01)]. This work sets the stage for replication studies in other canine populations that should begin to explore the mechanistic basis for parity-associated CCL rupture risk reduction and to pursue other non-reproductive health outcomes in bitches whose incidence or severity may be parity-sensitive.

In this action research study, we investigated how art teachers demonstrate critical and creative thinking when engaging in collaborative reasoning exchanges about the meaning of contemporary Chinese artworks. The study was conducted in a professional learning program for art teachers in conjunction with a privately owned gallery housing a collection of contemporary Chinese art. The findings reveal that critical and creative thinking is a form of making and manifests in the reasoning processes critics use to formulate judgments of artwork meaning. This is dependent on how critics exploit practical and theoretical constraints on art understanding. Contributing factors to the study's outcomes included aligning the role of critical and creative thinking with reasoning, theory building, metacognitive assessment, and pedagogy in art. The article concludes with some reflections on the implications of the findings for art education.
