Abstract

Zoosporic parasites have received increased attention during the last years, but it is still largely unnoted that these parasites can themselves be infected by hyperparasites. Some members of the Chytridiomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Cryptomycota, Hyphochytriomycota, Labyrinthulomycota, Oomycota, and Phytomyxea are hyperparasites of zoosporic hosts. Because of sometimes complex tripartite interactions between hyperparasite, their parasite-host, and the primary host, hyperparasites can be difficult to detect and monitor. Some of these hyperparasites use similar mechanisms as their parasite-hosts to find and infect their target and to access food resources. The life cycle of zoosporic hyperparasites is usually shorter than the life cycle of their hosts, so hyperparasites may accelerate the turnaround times of nutrients within the ecosystem. Hyperparasites may increase the complexity of food webs and play significant roles in regulating population sizes and population dynamics of their hosts. We suggest that hyperparasites lengthen food chains but can also play a role in conducting or suppressing diseases of animals, plants, or algae. Hyperparasites can significantly impact ecosystems in various ways, therefore it is important to increase our understanding about these cryptic and diverse organisms.

Abstract

Achlya anomala sp. nov. is described from acetate sheets put in Las Cañas stream as a substratum, in Buenos Aires Province (Argentina). The species is illustrated and compared with other species of the genus; it develops characteristic large swellings like anomalous oogonia intermingled with the normal ones, often one or several times proliferating, with or without oospores inside. The oogonia are smooth or with scanty papillate or tuberculate projections; the antheridial branches are usually diclinous, often monoclinous and rarely androgynous; oospores are eccentric, (1)2-12(20) per oogonium. 33. Rhizophlyctis rosea(Rhizophlyctidales, Chytridiomycota) in soil: frequency, abundance and density of colonization of lens paper baits

Abstract

The distribution of Rhizophlyctis roseawas examined in soils from 22 locations including disturbed and undisturbed habitats in eastern Australia. Thalli of Rh. roseawere observed on baits from 60% of the sites (67% agricultural and 33% natural soils). Within the disturbed habitats, samples from four sites that experience different temperature ranges were assessed for frequency, abundance, number of thalli and density of colonization of the baits. Lens paper baits were placed into Petri dishes with sterile deionized water and air-dried soil and incubated for up to four days at 20, 35 or 40°C, and at 20°C after freezing (−15°C) and heating (80°C) the soil. The abundance, frequency, number of thalli and density of colonization varied among the samples analysed, with the greatest abundance, number of thalli and density for Pitt Town Bottoms and the highest frequency for Pitt Town Bottoms and Narrabri soils. All isolates grew and released zoospores after heat and freezing treatments. Freezing soil before baiting increased the number of thalli and density of colonization of baits, while heating decreased the frequency and abundance of Rh. rosea.
