Abstract

Trabajo presentado en la 12th Conference on Laser Ablation, celebrada en Nápoles (Italia) del 06 al 11 de octubre de 2013., The possibility of using DNA-based materials in photonics and nanoelectronics has stimulated the measurement and interpretation of their nonlinear optical properties [1]. Low-order harmonic generation (HG) of a driving laser propagating through an ablation plume has been proposed as a novel diagnosis technique for spatial and temporal exploration of the expanding plasma [2]. On the other hand, the use of plasma plumes has increased the number of materials available for efficient high harmonic generation (HHG), leading to discovery of new features of high-order harmonic spectroscopy [3]. In this work, we report on HG and HHG on nanosecond laser ablation plasmas of the nucleobases thymine (T) and uracil (U). Relations between the nonlinear response of the plasmas and their composition and dynamics are investigated by measuring the harmonics of an infrared nanosecond driving laser and the optical emission and time-of-flight mass spectra of the ablation plumes of targets consisting of pressed pellets of T and U.

Abstract

Four-wave mixing in resonant atomic vapors based on maximum coherence induced by Stark- chirped rapid adiabatic passage (SCRAP) is investigated theoretically. We show the advantages of a coupling scheme involving maximum coherence and demonstrate how a large atomic coherence between a ground and an highly excited state can be prepared by SCRAP. Full analytic solutions of the field propagation problem taking into account pump field depletion are derived. The solutions are obtained with the help of an Hamiltonian approach which in the adiabatic limit permits to reduce the full set of Maxwell- Bloch equations to simple canonical equations of Hamiltonian mechanics for the field variables. It is found that the conversion efficiency reached is largely enhanced if the phase mismatch induced by linear refraction is compensated. A detailed analysis of the phase matching conditions shows, however, that the phase mismatch contribution from the Kerr effect cannot be compensated simultaneously with linear refraction contribution. Therefore, the conversion efficiency in a coupling scheme involving maximum coherence prepared by SCRAP is high, but not equal to unity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

50. Ion energy measurements from the interaction of atomic and molecular clusters with intense femtosecond laser pulses

Abstract

We have measured multi-keV protons and ~100 keV iodine ions from the interaction of intense, femtosecond laser pulses with atomic Xe clusters and mixed-species HI clusters. The explosion dynamics of the HI clusters differs from the pure H and I cluster cases, with the iodine energies being substantially reduced. Mixed-species clusters provide a possible route for boosting the explosion energies of low-Z ions, and extend the advantages of the laser-cluster interaction to species that do not readily form pure clusters.
