Condensed Matter - Soft Condensed Matter - Abstract
Using a 2D lattice model, we conduct Monte Carlo simulations of micellar aggregation of linear-chain amphiphiles having two solvophilic head groups. In the context of this simple model, we quantify how the amphiphile architecture influences the critical micelle concentration (CMC), with a particular focus on the role of the asymmetry of the amphiphile structure. Accordingly, we study all possible arrangements of the head groups along amphiphile chains of fixed length $N=12$ and 16 molecular units. This set of idealized amphiphile architectures approximates many cases of symmetric and asymmetric gemini surfactants, double-headed surfactants and boloform surfactants. Consistent with earlier results, we find that the number of spacer units $s$ separating the heads has a significant influence on the CMC, with the CMC increasing with $s$ for $s

The micellar and morphological properties of symmetric, cationic gemini surfactants have been well studied in the literature as a function of nature and type of the spacer group and the length and type of hydrophobic chain. In this paper, we have examined the effects of tail asymmetry on the properties of a series of cationic surfactants, the N-alkyl-1-N'-alkyl-2-N,N,N',N'-tetramethyldiammonium dibromide. A novel synthetic method is used to prepare a series of these surfactants and the consequences of asymmetry on micellar properties are presented. This new method has been shown to be more efficient, with higher yields of the asymmetric surfactants than the yields of the accepted literature method. The critical micelle concentration values and the micelle sizes of the asymmetric gemini surfactants, 12-4-12, 12-4-10, 12-4-8, and 12-4-6 gemini surfactants, were obtained from conductivity and dynamic light scattering. With increasing chain asymmetry, the size of the micelle increased due to the formation of loose micelles. The addition of NaCl and N[a.sub.2]S[O.sub.4] to the surfactant solutions increased the aggregate size, and this effect was more pronounced with increasing salt concentrations. These results are interpreted in terms of the effect these ions have on the 'compactness' of the micelle structure. Key words: micelles, light scattering, critical micelle concentration, morphology, gemini surfactants. [Traduit par la Redaction] Mots-cles : micelles, diffusion de la lumiere, concentration micellaire critique, morphologie, tensioactifs gemines., Introduction Surface active agents, more commonly known as surfactants, are compounds that have a variety of industrial and household applications. Language production has often been described as impaired in psychiatric diseases such as in psychosis. Nevertheless, little is known about the characteristics of linguistic difficulties and their relation with other cognitive domains in patients with a first episode of psychosis (FEP), either affective or non-affective. To deepen our comprehension of linguistic profile in FEP, 133 patients with FEP (95 non-affective, FEP-NA; 38 affective, FEP-A) and 133 healthy controls (HC) were assessed with a narrative discourse task. Speech samples were systematically analyzed with a well-established multilevel procedure investigating both micro- (lexicon, morphology, syntax) and macro-linguistic (discourse coherence, pragmatics) levels of linguistic processing. Executive functioning and IQ were also evaluated. Both linguistic and neuropsychological measures were secondarily implemented with a machine learning approach in order to explore their predictive accuracy in classifying participants as FEP or HC. Compared to HC, FEP patients showed language production difficulty at both micro- and macro-linguistic levels. As for the former, FEP produced shorter and simpler sentences and fewer words per minute, along with a reduced number of lexical fillers, compared to HC. At the macro-linguistic level, FEP performance was impaired in local coherence, which was paired with a higher percentage of utterances with semantic errors. Linguistic measures were not correlated with any neuropsychological variables. No significant differences emerged between FEP-NA and FEP-A (p≥0.02, after Bonferroni correction). Machine learning analysis showed an accuracy of group prediction of 76.36% using language features only, with semantic variables being the most impactful. Such a percentage was enhanced when paired with clinical and neuropsychological variables. Results confirm the presence of language production deficits already at the first episode of the illness, being such impairment not related to other cognitive domains. The high accuracy obtained by the linguistic set of features in classifying groups support the use of machine learning methods in neuroscience investigations.

The surface and self-assembly properties of a family of multiheaded, multitailed surfactants based on a tripentaerythritol backbone are described. Critical aggregation concentrations of these unusual surfactant systems have been determined from surface tension measurements; aggregate sizes in the presence and absence of a small amount of added electrolyte have been obtained via dynamic light scattering, and the morphologies of the aggregates were examined from electron microscopy measurements. In general, when compared to conventional ionic and two-headed surfactants (and other recently synthesized pentaerythritol derived surfactants from this group), these multiheaded surfactants exhibited some unusual trends in their aggregation behaviour and interesting aggregate structures in aqueous solution, as a function of alkyl chain length. Key words: tripentaerythritol, surfactants, aggregates, critical aggregation concentration, light scattering. [Traduit par la Redaction] Mots-cles: tripentaerythritol, surfactants, agregats, concentration d'agregation critique, diffusion de la lumiere., Introduction We have recently described the extremely flexible synthesis of cationic, (1-3) zwitterionic, and anionic (4) two-headed surfactants based on the pentaerythritol moiety. Efficient syntheses of three series of anionic gemini surfactants based on pentaerythritol are described. A series of disulfates was prepared by the double displacement of the two cyclic sulfates in the S4-symmetric compound pentaerythritol spirobicyclic sulfate (1) with linear alkoxides. A second series of disulfates was prepared by reaction of the dialkoxides of di-O-alkylpentaerythritols with ethylene sulfate. The di-O-alkylpentaerythritols can be prepared as previously reported by us or by the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of the first series of disulfates. A series of disulfonates was prepared by reaction of the dialkoxides of di-O-alkylpentaerythritols with 1,3-propanesultone. This last set of reactions was complicated by the formation of oxetanes, which probably arose from initial reversible displacement on sulfur of the sultone alkoxide by the pentaerythritol alkoxide followed by a second intramolecular displacement of the resulting sulfonate. Changing the order of addition to keep the reaction medium from containing excess base as well as lowering the reaction temperature minimized the amounts of these byproducts. All three series had excellent surfactant properties. Key words: gemini surfactants, anionic surfactants, pentaerythritol, cyclic sulfates, disulfates, sulfonates, 1,3- propanesultone. The nature and strength of the interactions between the 1,3-bis(dimethylhexadecyl)propanediammonium dibromide (16-3-16) gemini surfactant and a homologous series of nonionic polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan ester surfactants having laurate (Tween 20), stearate (Tween 60), or oleate (Tween 80) alkyl tails has been investigated. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) values of the mixed gemini-tween systems were determined using the du Notly ring surface tension method, and the results have been analyzed using Clint's, Rubingh's, Motomura's, and Maeda's theories for mixed micellar systems. The results demonstrate a synergistic mixing behaviour between the Tween surfactants and the 16-3-16 gemini surfactant, where the strength of interaction is dependent upon the chain length and saturation of the Tween alkyl tail. Proton chemical shifts and two-dimensional COSY and NOE spectroscopy (NOESY) experiments have been used to examine the interaction of various oppositely charged surfactant and poly electrolyte systems, namely, the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethyammonium bromide (DTAB) and a series of alkanediyl-α,ω-bis(alkyldimethyl ammonium bromide) surfactants (Gem 12-s-12, where .v is the length of the methylene spacer group) with the anionic poly electrolyte poly(styrene sulfonate) or PSS. In all cases, we observe substantial aromatic-so lute-induced chemical shifts (ASIS) in the surfactant peaks of the polymer/surfactant complexes versus that of the pure surfactant spectra. In the case of the DTAB/PSS system, the chemical-shift changes as a function of changing ratio of surfactant to polymer are interpreted in terms of structural changes that occur in the complex with increasing polymer concentration. For the Gem 12-s-12/PSS systems, the interaction of these gemini surfactants with the anionic polyelectrolyte, as deduced from the interpretation of the ¹H ASIS shifts and the NOESY cross peaks, is dependent on the length of the methylene spacer. From the NOESY experiments, we observed significant NOESY cross peaks that correlated well with the expected mechanism of interaction as observed in the literature for the single-tailed surfactant/polymer system. NMR techniques are shown to provide information on the molecular arrangement of these molecules in aqueous solution. Key words: polymers, surfactants, complexes, ASIS experiments, 2D NOESY. Weakly interacting ligands including three Gemini surfactants, didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), and amines ([RNH.sub.2], [R.sub.2]NH, and [R.sub.3]N) were used to prepare Au nanoparticles (NPs). Aqueous Au NPs capped with DDAB and Gemini surfactants showed similar sizes (3-4 nm), whereas toluene-based NPs stabilized with DDAB, amines, and their mixtures range from 2.5 to 9.3 nm. Ligand effect on Au-Pd NP structure was also studied with EXAFS. These findings were consistently accounted for by considering the ligand's electronic/steric effects and mixed ligands coadsorption, and suggest useful ways to control NP structure by manipulating the two effects and using mixed capping ligands. Key words: metal nanoparticles, capping ligands, electronic effect, steric effect, EXAFS. The micelle formation process for a zwitterionic surfactant, N-dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (ZW3-12), has been investigated in a series of mixed solvents consisting of different concentrations of ethoxylated alcohols and polymers. The critical micelle concentrations (cmc values) of the aggregates were determined by fluorescence spectroscopy, and the surfactant aggregation numbers were obtained from luminescence probing experiments. The cmc values for ZW3-12 changed very little in the presence of increasing amounts of poly(ethyleneoxide) (PEO) in the mixed solvent. In the case of the ethoxylated alcohol--ZW3-12 systems, the cmc values and aggregation numbers decreased systematically with increasing alcohol concentration. However, the cmc values of the mixed micelles showed little dependence on the number of ethylene oxide (EO) groups at constant alcohol concentration. These results are compared with the well-studied sodium dodecylsulfate--ethoxylated alcohol, and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide--ethoxylated alcohol mixed micellar systems and to SDS-PEO systems and are discussed in terms of the contribution of the EO groups to the hydrophobic interactions. Key words: zwitterionic surfactant, alcohols, mixed micelles, luminescence probing. GENETICS of deafness ,CONFERENCES & conventions ,HEARING disorders ,MOLECULAR diagnosis - Abstract
Introduction: The definition of a molecular diagnosis for patients affected by hereditary hearing loss (HHL) is significantly hampered by the extreme clinical and genetic heterogeneity that characterise the condition. In particular, peculiar and understudied cases are those of non-syndromic mimics (NSM), meaning patients with particularly mild forms of syndromic HHL or initially presenting isolated deafness and delayed onset of other clinical signs. Material and methods: In the last 18 months, a cohort of 73 apparently non-syndromic Italian HHL patients has been enrolled in the study. All the individuals were negative at GJB2 and STRC genetic tests and underwent whole-exome sequencing, aiming to define a molecular diagnosis and eventually identify NSMs. Results: A molecular diagnosis was provided for 36/73 patients (49.3%), and 12 of them could be classified as NSMs. In detail, two groups of patients could be highlighted: (1) patients presenting subtle additional signs that were missed during the first clinical evaluation and (2) patients whose molecular diagnosis suggests the future development of additional clinical features. In Group 1, two patients were identified, and they carried pathogenic variants within the MITF and GATA3 genes, which are associated with Waardenburg and Barakat syndromes, respectively. As regards Group 2, ten patients were detected, and the involved genes were CDH23 (one patient), USH2A (six patients) and ADGRV1 (three patients). Thus, these results suggest that Usher syndrome type 2 accounts for the vast majority of NSMs (75%). Moreover, these considerations further confirm our previous findings regarding the high prevalence of Usher syndrome type 2 carriers in the Italian population (1: 70). Conclusions: Identifying patients within Group 1 of NSMs highlights the importance of a critical re-evaluation of the diagnostic criteria of each condition and provides crucial insight into the clinical characteristics of very mild forms of syndromic deafness. On the other hand, the clinical condition of Group 2 NSM patients will be evaluated by a multi-disciplinary team in order to provide personalised follow-up and specific preventive strategies. The micellization and the thermodynamic properties of a series of sodium cyclohexyl alkanoates of the general formula [C.sub.6][H.sub.11][(C[H.sub.2]).sub.n]COONa (where n = 1, 2, 3, 4) were investigated employing conductivity, density, surface tension, viscosity, speed of sound, luminescence probing experiments, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The critical micelle concentrations (cmcs) and the aggregation numbers indicate that these surfactants have high cmc values and low aggregation numbers when compared to other single-headed surfactants (most notably the sodium alkanoates). Thermodynamic properties, obtained from the mass action model, indicate that micellization is spontaneous and entropically driven. The saturation area per molecule, the free energies of adsorption, and the efficiency and effectiveness of adsorption were determined through surface tension measurements. The presence of the cylcohexyl ring appears to influence the surface properties of micellization. Both the effectiveness and the efficiency of these surfactants, in lowering the surface tension of water, are lower than that of the straight chain alkanoates. Key words: thermodynamics, micellization, aggregation numbers, speed of sound, and spectroscopy.
