6. Photodegradation of polyethylenes: Comparative effect of Fe and Ca-stearates as pro-oxidant additives

Abstract

The effect of iron and calcium stearates on the degradation of polyethylene (LDPE and LLDPE), under natural and artificial exposure, has been studied. The activity of stearates has been evaluated by chemiluminescence and FTIR of polyethylenes. The analysis of the molecular weight changes and content of degradation products identified by GC–MS during ageing process confirmed their pro-degrading activity. Films containing stearates exhibited lower CL emission, and revealed the higher efficiency of Fe-Stearate compared to Ca-Stearate in decomposing hydroperoxides, leading to higher degradation during processing. The results were confirmed by TGA analysis, where the weight loss onset and Tmax shifted to lower temperatures in polyethylenes with incorporation of Fe- and Ca-stearates compared to pure polymers. Polyethylenes were outdoor and accelerated exposed, and CL measured at different period of times. Chemiluminescence temperature-ramping tests under nitrogen showed the formation of a peroxide peak at lower temperature, and a significant increase in carbonyl index for PE containing stearates was found by FTIR. The results were supported by GC–MS, where the concentration of extracted products identified in the polyethylenes containing Fe-stearate was significant, and a much greater decrease in molecular weight was determined by GPC, which confirmed the development of degradation for polyethylenes with Fe-Stearates in comparison to pure or Ca-stearate polyethylenes., Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Depto. de Química en Ciencias Farmacéuticas, Fac. de Farmacia, TRUE, pub

Abstract

The article formulates a proposal for a theoretical model that can be applied to the Public Service Media (SPM) of Catalonia, in order to update it according to the challenges it will have to face in the coming years. This proposal is the result of an analysis of the transformations in the audiovisual sector, the deployment of telecommunications, the impact of the new European directives and the organizational charts of European public broadcasters similar to the Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals (CCMA), in order to identify the most efficient solutions when organizing the PSM. It also discusses the rejuvenation of the workforce and the funding needed to carry out the public service mission.; El artículo formula una propuesta de modelo teórico susceptible de ser aplicado al Servicio Público Audiovisual (SPA) de Cataluña, para actualizarlo de acuerdo con los retos que deberá afrontar en los próximos años. Dicha propuesta es resultado del análisis sobre las transformaciones en el sector audiovisual, el despliegue de las telecomunicaciones, el impacto de las nuevas directivas europeas y los organigramas de las radiotelevisiones públicas europeas parecidas a la Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals (CCMA), con el fin de identificar las soluciones más eficientes a la hora de organizar el SPA. También analiza el rejuvenecimiento de la plantilla de trabajadores y la financiación necesaria para desempeñar la misión de servicio público.

Abstract

The Carpathians and other mountainous regions around the world are renowned for their specific landscapes shaped by pastoralism, a millennia-old traditional and sustainable economic system. In Romania, this traditional occupation has an established place within the Romanian culture. In an environment where large predators are present, the livestock owners and shepherds have traditionally relied, and still do, on livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) to protect the flock against carnivores or theft, therefore, the dogs are perceived as an integral component of the traditional pastoral system. However, from late April until the end of September, many outdoor recreational activities like hiking, mountain trail running, or biking overlap with the pastoral calendar, creating a potential for conflict between two, very different categories of landscape users, with recurring incidents happening over the years. In this study, a winter GPS monitoring campaign was proposed, between November 2023 and January 2024 that used GPS professional collars to track the movements of two livestock guardian dogs stationed at two sheepfolds located at their winter bases in the hills at the foot of Ignis Mountains (part of the Romanian northern Carpathians) from northwestern Maramureș Land, Romania. The campaign generated point-based spatiotemporal data processed and analyzed in M. Excel and QGIS using Kernel density estimation as the main method to generate metrics and identify potential clusters of LGD activity in their usual environment. The results highlight high observational clusters near the winter folds but also lower observational clusters in areas situated hundreds of meters distance around the main compound, in certain locations. Although temporally limited, the results have the potential to help the understanding of the animal's preferred zone of habitation and substantiate future win-win cohabitation solutions that minimize conflictual encounters between the shepherds and their guardian dogs on one side, as primary land users, and outdoor recreationists as other landscape users.

Aquest projecte pretén ser una recopilació del recorregut seguit durant el desenvolupament del sidewing d'un monoplaça de Formula Student, basant-se en el pròxim prototip ETR-X de cara a la temporada 2022-2023 de l'equip e-Tech Racing. Aquest treball consisteix a continuar l'estudi aerodinàmic realitzat per un ex-company d'equip i departament, amb la intenció de millorar i optimitzar les prestacions del nou Sidewing i determinar la futura geometria. En primer lloc, s'aborden tots els aspectes teòrics de la mecànica de fluids i l'aerodinàmica. A continuació, es tracten totes les eines de dinàmica de fluids computacional (CFD), com aquestes s'han utilitzat en el projecte i quin ha estat la metodologia seguida. Finalment, es comenta tot el procés de disseny, analitzant numèricament els resultats de les simulacions amb l'ajuda de diferents formes de visualització. Per al disseny geomètric en 3D s’utilitza el SolidWorks i per a les simulacions i estudis aerodinàmics es fa ús del STAR CCM+. This work consists of continuing the aerodynamic study carried out by a former teammate and department colleague, with the intention of improving and optimising the performance of the new sidewing and determining the future geometry. First, all the theoretical aspects of fluid mechanics and aerodynamics are treated. Next, all the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools are discussed, how they have been used in the project and the methodology followed. Finally, the entire design process is discussed, analysing the numerical results of the simulations with the help of different forms of visualisation. SolidWorks is used for the 3D geometric design and STAR CCM+ is used for the simulations and aerodynamic studies. With all this, good results and conclusions can be reached that allow future team members to apply the final design for the next generation of a competitive vehicle.

Abstract

El presente artículo expone la riqueza pedagógica que tienen los espacios religiosos de culto dando muestra especial del magnífico ejemplo paradigmático que a este respecto representa la Basílica de la Sagrada Familia de Barcelona. El propósito principal es manifestar la necesidad de recuperar y reactualizar el uso de los espacios sacros, como espacios educativos vigentes, dado que esto es una urgencia pedagógica, por los beneficios y riqueza didáctica que esos mismos espacios nos proponen, así como por la realidad que hoy en día se da a estos espacios desde la perspectiva pedagógica. Esta tesis se establece, en un primer artículo, desde una fundamentación pedagógica, dando paso a dos artículos más que abordarán las perspectivas arquitectónica y teológica que avalan que los espacios de culto son unos espacios extraordinarios y únicos para generar y desarrollar auténticas experiencias educativas llenas de significado y de oportunidades para la educación del siglo XXI. Abstract: This article presents the pedagogical richness of religious places of worship, with special reference to the magnificent paradigmatic example of the Basílica of the Sagrada Família in Barcelona. The main purpose is to show the need to recover and update the use of holy places as current educational spaces, given that this is a pedagogical urgency, for the benefits and didactic richness that these same spaces offer to us, as well as for the reality that nowadays these spaces are given from the pedagogical perspective. This thesis is established, in a first article, from a pedagogical basis, giving way to two more articles that will address the architectural and theological perspectives, which support that places of worship are extraordinary and unique spaces to generate and develop authentic educational experiences full of meaning and opportunities for education in the 21st century.

Abstract

Background: The impact of biologics on the risk of postoperative complications (PC) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is still an ongoing debate. This lack of evidence is more relevant for ustekinumab and vedolizumab. Aims: To evaluate the impact of biologics on the risk of PC. Methods: A retrospective study was performed in 37 centres. Patients treated with biologics within 12 weeks before surgery were considered “exposed”. The impact of the exposure on the risk of 30-day PC and the risk of infections was assessed by logistic regression and propensity score-matched analysis. Results: A total of 1535 surgeries were performed on 1370 patients. Of them, 711 surgeries were conducted in the exposed cohort (584 anti-TNF, 58 vedolizumab and 69 ustekinumab). In the multivariate analysis, male gender (OR: 1.5, 95% CI: 1.2–2.0), urgent surgery (OR: 1.6, 95% CI: 1.2–2.2), laparotomy approach (OR: 1.5, 95% CI: 1.1–1.9) and severe anaemia (OR: 1.8, 95% CI: 1.3–2.6) had higher risk of PC, while academic hospitals had significantly lower risk. Exposure to biologics (either anti-TNF, vedolizumab or ustekinumab) did not increase the risk of PC (OR: 1.2, 95% CI: 0.97–1.58), although it could be a risk factor for postoperative infections (OR 1.5, 95% CI: 1.03–2.27). Conclusions: Preoperative administration of biologics does not seem to be a risk factor for overall PC, although it may be so for postoperative infections.

Abstract

The article formulates a proposal for a theoretical model that can be applied to the Public Service Media (SPM) of Catalonia, in order to update it according to the challenges it will have to face in the coming years. This proposal is the result of an analysis of the transformations in the audiovisual sector, the deployment of telecommunications, the impact of the new European directives and the organizational charts of European public broadcasters similar to the Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals (CCMA), in order to identify the most efficient solutions when organizing the PSM. Abstract

Abstract Background PIK3CA mutations are implicated in various cancers, but the implications of multiple concurrent mutations and their orientations within the gene have not been fully explored. Methods In this study, we analyzed multi‐PIK3CA mutations across a diverse pan‐cancer cohort comprising 3564 tumors. Results Multi‐PIK3CA mutations were present in 10.3% of all PIK3CA‐mutant tumors, predominantly occurring in breast and gynecological cancers. Notably, mutations within the helical domain (E542:E545) exclusively occurred in the trans‐orientation, contrasting with mutations in the kinase ABD and C2 domains, which mainly appeared in the cis orientation. Conclusions The distinct pattern of mutation orientations in PIK3CA suggests variable oncogenic potential, with helical domain mutations in the trans‐orientation potentially being less oncogenic. These findings highlight the importance of mutation orientation in the PIK3CA gene as potential biomarkers for targeted therapy. This understanding is crucial for designing clinical trials that leverage PI3K inhibitors, aiming for more effective and precise cancer treatment.

Abstract

La relació de la ciència amb els espais rurals ha estat condicionada per les transformacions socials, la mateixa evolució de la ciutat i les diverses funcions que s’han adscrit a unes àrees sovint menystingudes socialment. Tanmateix, la capacitat de la ciència d’experimentar-se de baix cap a dalt, amb una mirada des del territori, té la potencialitat de contribuir de forma determinant a fer front als múltiples reptes que tenen les àrees rurals. Aquest és l’esperit del Fòrum de la Nova Ruralitat de les comarques del nord valencianes, una experiència en què la ciència ciutadana ha servit com a revulsiu mobilitzador en un territori greument despoblat.
