The convention theory provides a scientific framework appropriate for the analysis of the quality criteria of consumers and producers. The wine industry tends more towards differentiation by means of quality. The aim of this study is to identify the qua - lity standards currently in force within the wine market and the strategies that companies follow to achieve them. Within the framework of the convention theory we have designed a set of statistical variables that, once normalized as Z-scores, can be used as indicators of the strategies used by wine designations of origin in their search for quality. This set has been tested through a case study on Aragonese designations of origin and different models have been identified, ones focusing on specific conventions (industrial in Cariñena, domestic in Calatayud) and others open to different categories of convention (Somontano and Campo de Borja)., La teoría de las convenciones ofrece un marco científico adecuado para analizar los criterios de calidad de consumidores y productores.

This paper provides evidence of the intergenerational mobility of economic wellbeing for the countries of the EU-15. We deal with the potential endogeneity of the transmission parameter by exploiting the presence of heteroskedasticity in a cross-sectional setting, using rank-order IV and conditional second moments estimation. OLS and panel (Fixed Effects and First Differences) models are also estimated, providing the upper and lower bounds for the true causal effect, not only for fathers and sons, but also for fathers and daughters, mothers and sons and mothers and daughters, in each of the sample countries. Our findings suggest that income well-being is much more persistent across generations in Southern European countries than in Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands and the UK.

This paper first identifies the determinants of spouses’ satisfaction levels within the household with respect to their leisure time and, secondly, characterizes whether their preferences have some degree of altruistic or egoistic character in regard to this particular satisfaction. To that end, it formulates a theoretical framework from the collective family model whose stochastic formulations are estimated for 14 EU countries. The general empirical results first reveal that the presence of children has a significantly negative impact on the leisure satisfaction of both spouses. Then, increases in individual incomes lead to lower own leisure satisfaction levels. Both husbands and wives show egoistic behavior with respect to the labor and non-labor incomes (wage rate) of their respective spouses’ satisfaction levels.

About 20 000 MRCI single point energies for the O( 1 D) + HF → F( 2 P) + OH reaction have been calculated and fitted to obtain the ground 1 A′ potential energy surface (PES). After successfully comparing with spectroscopic data related to the deep HOF molecular well the more demanding tests involving the whole surface with quasiclassical trajectory calculations (QCT) – first ‘validated’ by comparison to quantum (wavepacket) results – were performed. A reasonable agreement of the room temperature reaction rate coefficient with the more reliable existing kinetic experiment as well as the way the rate coefficient, k ( T ), changes with temperature and the shape of the products angular distribution in detailed dynamical calculations are reasonable guarantees of the PES quality.

A detailed and comprehensive study of the dynamics has been performed using quasiclassical trajectory calculations on a recent version of the ground 1 1A′ potential energy surface (PES) [M. T. Martinez et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2, 589 (2000)] for this system. This PES was shown to account very well for the various experimental results available for the HOCl system. It has been found that this reaction occurs following different mechanisms depending on whether the HClO, HOCl, or both wells are visited in the course of the reaction. The different scalar and vector properties are strongly dependent on the type of mechanism through which a reaction takes place. Calculations have also been carried out to determine the distribution of collision times for each of the different mechanisms, and the time evolution of the differential cross section. For both reaction chemical channels the backward scattering is delayed with respect to the appearance of forward scattering. Although this reaction has been consi...

The lowest singlet 11A′ and 11A″ potential energy surfaces (PES) of the O(1D)+HBr system have been ab initio computed. The complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method was used in most of the calculations, considering all the valence orbitals as active. The calculations were complemented with both analytical gradient calculations to characterize the stationary points and multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) calculations at selected nuclear geometries to improve the determination of the barrier heights and of the energetics. Electronic energy values for both PESs were then independently fitted by polynomial expansions in bond order coordinates. On the fitted surfaces quasi-classical trajectories were separately run. Single-surface calculations behave qualitatively different for the ground and the excited PES at low collision energies. A satisfactory agreement with existing experimental data was obtained by using the ground PES while calculations performed on the excited 11A″ PES worsened the agreement. However, when collision energy is increased, detailed experimental distributions are less well reproduced by calculations on the ground PES. This may imply the participation via nonadiabatic transitions of the 21A′ PES at higher energies while the adiabatic ground singlet PES well describes reactive scattering at low collision energy. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The CASSCF (complete active space self-consistent field) and MRCI (multi-reference configuration interaction) ab initio points of Hernandez et al. (J. Chem. Phys., 1996, 105, 2710) have been supplemented with new calculations of the same level of theory at selected geometries, and the whole set was used to fit an improved ground (11A′) potential energy surface (PES) for the O(1D)+HCl system. The points were fitted by a polynomial expansion in bond order coordinates, and the electronic excitation of the isolated oxygen atom was taken care of by a proper, smooth lowering of the HCl potential at long internuclear distances. This ensures a common dissociation to all ground state atoms. On the fitted surface quasiclassical trajectories have been run under conditions similar to those of the experiment. A very good agreement with beam data of Balucani et al. (Chem. Phys. Lett., 1991, 180, 34) was found for the LAB (laboratory frame) angular distribution and the time-of-flight spectra of ClO. A good agreement with the infrared chemiluminescence and laser induced fluorescence data of Kruus et al. (J. Chem. Phys., 1988, 88, 985) was found for the inverted vibrational distribution of the OH product.

By performing a quasiclassical trajectory study, we have confirmed that the title reaction can take place via different paths even when leading to the same product (microscopic branching). However, contrary to a previous hypothesis, no collinear collisions were found to contribute to the reaction. Therefore, the backward–forward structure of the ClO product angular distribution obtained in the crossed-beam experiment has to be ascribed to the combination of a backward peak associated with insertion-like collisions and a forward peak associated with side attachment of O on Cl. Proper combinations of insertion and attachment contributions also rationalize other properties of the title reaction.

To investigate the effect of the structure of the potential energy surface on the vector properties of the O(1D) + HCl reaction, we carried out a quasiclassical trajectory study of some two and three vector correlations. The analysis of the allocation of the angular momentum and of the variation with the scattering angle of the second Legendre moment related to the distribution of the product rotational angular momentum with respect to relative velocity indicated that the formation of an intermediate complex is responsible for deviations from the kinematic limiting behavior. The complex formation explains also the agreement of trajectory results with those of a statistical model reaction proposed by Herschbach (Case, D. A.; Herschbach, D. R. Mol. Phys. 1975, 30, 1537).

The dynamics of the O((1)D) + HCl(v = 0, j = 0) --> Cl + OH reaction at a 0.26 eV collision energy has been investigated by means of a quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) and statistical quantum and quasiclassical methods. State-resolved cross sections and Cl atom velocity distributions have been calculated on two different potential energy surfaces (PESs): the H2 surface (Martinez et al. Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2000, 2, 589) and the latest surface by Peterson, Bowman, and co-workers (PSB2) (J. Chem. Phys. 2000, 113, 6186). The comparison with recent experimental results reveals that the PSB2 PES manages to describe correctly differential cross sections and the velocity distributions of the departing Cl atom. The calculations on the H2 PES seem to overestimate the OH scattering in the forward direction and the fraction of Cl at high recoil velocities. Although the comparison of the corresponding angular distributions is not bad, significant deviations with a statistical description are found, thus ruling out a complex-forming mechanism as the dominant reaction pathway. However, for the ClO + H product channel, the QCT and statistical predictions are found to be in good agreement.

Reactive properties of the Be+HF reaction have been investigated theoretically using a new fit of the ab initio potential energy values. The dependency of the reactive dynamics upon both the partition of the initial energy among the various diatomic degrees of freedom and the features of the potential energy surface is analyzed by discussing the structure of detailed products’ properties and the evolution of the reactive cross section with collision energy. Dynamical properties of competing reaction paths are also investigated by carrying out a detailed examination of selected trajectory plots.

Quasiclassical trajectory calculations have been performed on the Chen-Schaefer-Carter-Murrell potential energy surface of the title reaction at relative translational energies (T) of 15, 20 and 25 kcal.mol −1 with v=0,1 and 2 and J=0,1,2 and 7. The initial atom-diatom orientation (θ) shows a noteworthy effect on the reaction probability when v=J=O, namely the attack of the Li atom by the H-end cone of the HF molecule is favoured over the attack by the F-end cone in spite of being LiF the reaction product. The effect disappears for v=1 or 2. It is suggested that the necessity of a T-V energy transfer might explain the calculated effect.

The effect of the gravimetric ratio, packing beads/polymer ( r ), in the chromatographic fractionation of polystyrene has been studied. Anionic polystyrene of bimodal molecular weight distribution was fractionated in three experiments with r values of 25, 50 and 130; a value of about 50 provided the most efficient separation. A GPC self-consistency analysis of this fractionation has been done with very satisfactory results. On the other hand, GPC analysis could not show any significant broadening of the molecular weight distributions of the fractions in going from r values of 130 down to 25.
