Since its discovery in 1998, the use of small interfering RNA (siRNA) has been increasing in biomedical studies because of its ability to very selectively inhibit the expression of any target gene. Thus, siRNAs can be used to generate therapeutic compounds for different diseases, including those that are currently ‘undruggable’. This has led siRNA-based therapeutic compounds to break into clinical settings, with them holding the promise to potentially revolutionise therapeutic approaches. To date, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have approved 5 compounds for treating different diseases including hypercholesterolemia, transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis (which leads to polyneuropathy), hepatic porphyria, and hyperoxaluria. This current article presents an overview of the molecular mechanisms involved in the selective pharmacological actions of siRNA-based compounds. It also describes the ongoing clinical trials of siRNA-based therapeutic compounds for hepatic diseases, pulmonary diseases, atherosclerosis, hypertriglyceridemia, transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis, and hyperoxaluria, kidney diseases, and haemophilia, as well as providing a description of FDA-approved siRNA therapies. Because of space constraints and to provide an otherwise comprehensive review, siRNA-based compounds applied to cancer therapies have been excluded. Finally, we discuss how the use of lipid-based nanoparticles to deliver siRNAs holds promise for selectively targeting mRNA-encoding proteins associated with the genesis of different diseases. Thus, siRNAs can help reduce the cellular levels of these proteins, thereby contributing to disease treatment. As consequence, a marked increase in the number of marketed siRNA-based medicines is expected in the next two decades, which will likely open up a new era of therapeutics.

Candida auris is an emerging, multidrug-resistant yeast that causes systemic infections, mainly in hospitalized or immunosuppressed patients. This pathogen has a high mortality and morbidity rate. This study aims to evaluate the antifungal potential of micafungin (MICA) encapsulated in a nanoemulsion (NEM) against four clades of C. auris and other non-C. auris species. The antifungal potential of MICA and NEM was evaluated by determining mature biofilm inhibition (0.78–50 µg/mL). The antifungal activities of MICA and NEM (5.92 mg/Kg) were evaluated using an in vivo model of Galleria mellonella. The results showed that NEM intensified the antibiofilm action of MICA, especially in 48 h mature biofilms. In vivo results displayed a higher effectiveness of NEM against all clades of C. auris tested, inhibiting the fungal load in the hemolymph and tissues of G. mellonella with a difference of 3 log10. In addition, C. auris infection caused granulomas surrounded by hemocytes, mainly at the lower and upper ends. Conversely, C. albicans developed pseudohyphae, biofilms, filaments, and chlamydospores. In conclusion, encapsulation of MICA in a nanoemulsion enhances its antifungal activity against mature biofilms of C. auris. This strategy may be considered a therapeutic approach for the control of infections and the dissemination of this new global health threat.

Abstract Phytoplankton play a crucial role in the marine food web and are sensitive indicators of environmental change. Iceland is at the center of a contrasting hydrography, with cold Arctic water coming in from the north and warmer Atlantic water from the south, making this geographical location very sensitive to climate change. We used DNA metabarcoding to determine the biogeography of phytoplankton in this area of accelerating change. Seawater samples were collected in spring (2012–2018), summer (2017) and winter (2018) together with corresponding physico-chemical metadata around Iceland. Amplicon sequencing of the V4 region of the 18S rRNA gene indicates that eukaryotic phytoplankton community composition is different between the northern and southern water masses, with some genera completely absent from Polar Water masses. Emiliania was more dominant in the Atlantic-influenced waters and in summer, and Phaeocystis was more dominant in the colder, northern waters and in winter. The Chlorophyta picophytoplankton genus, Micromonas, was similarly dominant to the dominant diatom genus, Chaetoceros. This study presents an extensive dataset which can be linked with other 18s rRNA datasets for further investigation into the diversity and biogeography of marine protists in the North Atlantic.

Hypercortisolism in dogs is frequently associated with systemic hypertension (SH). However, there are no studies evaluating the changes in systolic blood pressure (SBP) in dogs with adrenal-dependent hypercortisolism (ADH) during trilostane treatment or after adrenalectomy and their response to antihypertensive treatments. For this reason, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the changes in SBP in dogs with ADH during the first year of trilostane treatment or after adrenalectomy, the relation with clinical control of hypercortisolism and certain laboratory parameters, and the response to antihypertensive drugs. Fourteen dogs newly diagnosed with ADH were prospectively included and evaluated at diagnosis (T0) and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after (T1, T3, T6, and T12, respectively). Dogs were classified as hypertensive (HT; SBP ≥ 160 mmHg) and non-hypertensive. In HT dogs, benazepril was considered as the first-line drug, and, if necessary, amlodipine was prescribed. The prevalence of SH at T0 was 79%, and it was reduced to 25% at T12. Blood pressure (BP) was not associated with disease control or selected laboratory parameters at any endpoint. Only 22% of dogs with SH needed more than one drug to normalize their SBP. In all dogs surgically treated that were HT at T0, BP normalized at T3.

Over the last several years, the models for organic waste management have changed to implement circular economy in the productive cycle. In this context, new scenarios have emerged, where the management of different organic waste streams by composting is conducted with decentralized models that manage organic wastes in a more local way. However, in these new models, the standardization of the process control and of the end-product characteristics is necessary to guarantee the quality and agronomic value of the compost obtained, avoiding potential risks for human health and the environment. Thus, the aim of this work was to study two different scenarios of community composting of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste separately collected in order to guarantee the effectiveness and reproducibility of the composting processes and the quality of the composts obtained. For this, the development of the process and the characteristics of the composts at agronomic, hygienic–sanitary and environmental levels were assessed in real conditions and during three cycles of the process. The results obtained show high similarity among the different composting cycles, indicating an important degree of reproducibility among the processes. In addition, the composts obtained showed a good sanitary quality, absence of phytotoxicity and low contents of potentially toxic elements, which guarantee their use in agriculture without posing any risk to human health and to the environment.

In Spain and other Mediterranean countries, significant quantities of semi-solid olive mill waste are generated, which should be preferentially applied to agricultural soils to close nutrient cycles. However, two-phase olive mill waste (termed alperujo in Spanish) is known to pose risks to soil quality and plant production when applied to soil in large quantities. Alperujo has high contents of polyphenol substances, which can inhibit microbial growth and are also phytotoxic in nature. However, when applied in appropriate quantities and following specific methods, it is possible that the practice may not pose any risks, and this requires evaluation. As a waste management option, direct application of alperujo can supply plant nutrients and organic matter to degradation-prone Mediterranean soils. In order to validate this circular economy fertilization and soil protection strategy, an 18-month field experiment was undertaken, applying moderate quantities of alperujo on permanent crop groves throughout the Spanish region of Valencia. Eleven experimental parcels with permanent crops managed by farmers were identified to test two scenarios: a single application of 10 t/ha, and a second application of 10 t/ha after 10 months. Soil chemical parameters were assessed at 0, 6, 10, and 18 months. Soil organic carbon, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, pH, electrical conductivity, nitrates, and polyphenol contents were modified by alperujo application, but these effects were highly transient in nature, with generally no lasting effects after 4–6 months for either application scenario. Also, qualitative evaluations carried out by farmers revealed few effects, although some reductions in erosive processes and improvements in plant vigor were noted. As such, based on the measured parameters, it is concluded that the direct soil application of alperujo olive mill wastes at low application rates did not lead to any lasting detrimental effects on soil quality or compromise the productivity of permanent crops in this Mediterranean region.

IntroductionCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious zoonotic disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. Monitoring the infection in pets is recommended for human disease surveillance, prevention, and control since the virus can spread from people to animals during close contact. Several diagnostic tests have been adapted from humans to animals, but limited data on the validation process are available.MethodsHerein, the first comparative study of six “in house” and two commercial serological tests developed to monitor SARS-CoV-2 infection in pets was performed with a well-coded panel of sera (61 cat sera and 74 dog sera) with a conservative criterion (viral seroneutralisation and/or RT–qPCR results) as a reference. Four “in house” tests based on either the RBD fragment of the spike protein (RBD-S) or the N-terminal fragment of the nucleoprotein (N) were developed for the first time. The analytical specificity (ASp) of those tests that showed the best diagnostic performance was assessed. The validation included the analysis of a panel of sera obtained pre-pandemic from cats and dogs infected with other coronaviruses to determine the analytical Sp (17 cat sera and 41 dog sera).Results and discussionELISAS based on the S protein are recommended in serosurveillance studies for cats (RBD-S SALUVET ELISA, ELISA COVID UNIZAR and INgezim® COVID 19 S VET) and dogs (INgezim® COVID 19 S VET and RBD-S SALUVET ELISA). These tests showed higher diagnostic sensitivity (Se) and DSp in cats (>90%) than in dogs. When sera obtained prior to the pandemic and from animals infected with other coronaviruses were analyzed by RBD-S and N SALUVET ELISAs and INgezim® COVID 19 S VET, a few cross reactors or no cross reactions were detected when dog and cat sera were analyzed by tests based on the S protein, respectively. In contrast, the number of cross reactions increased when the test was based on the N protein. Thus, the use of tests based on the N protein was discarded for serodiagnosis purposes. The results obtained revealed the most accurate serological tests for each species. Further studies should attempt to improve the diagnostic performance of serological tests developed for dogs.

Candida auris is an emerging yeast of worldwide interest due to its antifungal resistance and mortality rates. The aim of this study was to analyse the in vitro and in vivo antifungal activity of a nanoemulsion loaded with amphotericin B (NEA) against planktonic cells and biofilm of C. auris clinical isolates belonging to four different clades. In vivo assays were performed using the Galleria mellonella model to analyse antifungal activity and histopathological changes. The in vitro results showed that NEA exhibited better antifungal activity than free amphotericin B (AmB) in both planktonic and sessile cells, with >31% inhibition of mature biofilm. In the in vivo assays, NEA demonstrated superior antifungal activity in both haemolymph and tissue. NEA reduced the fungal load in the haemolymph more rapidly and with more activity in the first 24 h after infection. The histological analysis of infected larvae revealed clusters of yeast, immune cells, melanisation, and granulomas. In conclusion, NEA significantly improved the in vitro and in vivo antifungal activity of AmB and could be considered a promising therapy for C. auris infections.

The dairy industry generates a large volume of by-products containing bioactive compounds that may have added value. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antigenotoxic effects of milk-derived products, such as whey, buttermilk, and lactoferrin, in two human cell lines: Caco-2 as an intestinal barrier model and HepG2 as a hepatic cell line. First, the protective effect of dairy samples against the oxidative stress caused by menadione was analyzed. All these dairy fractions significantly reversed the oxidative stress, with the non-washed buttermilk fraction presenting the greatest antioxidant effect for Caco-2 cells and lactoferrin as the best antioxidant for HepG2 cells. At concentrations that did not impact cell viability, we found that the dairy sample with the highest antigenotoxic power against menadione, in both cell lines, was lactoferrin at the lowest concentration. Additionally, dairy by-products maintained their activity in a coculture of Caco-2 and HepG2, mimicking the intestinal-liver axis. This result suggests that the compounds responsible for the antioxidant activity could cross the Caco-2 barrier and reach HepG2 cells on the basal side, exerting their function on them. In conclusion, our results show that dairy by-products have antioxidant and antigenotoxic activities, which would allow revaluing their use in food specialties.

The aim of this paper is to infer the effects that change on human mobility had on the transmission dynamics during the first four months of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Costa Rica, which could have played a role in delaying community transmission in the country. First, by using parametric and non-parametric change-point detection techniques, we were able to identify two different periods when the trend of daily new cases significantly changed. Second, we explored the association of these changes with data on population mobility. This also allowed us to estimate the lag between changes in human mobility and rates of daily new cases. The information was then used to establish an association between changes in population mobility and the sanitary measures adopted during the study period. Results showed that during the initial two months of the pandemic in Costa Rica, the implementation of sanitary measures and their impact on reducing human mobility translated to a mean reduction of 54% in the number of daily cases from the projected number, delaying community transmission.

Food-related disorders are increasingly common in developed societies, and the psychological component of these disorders has been gaining increasing attention. Both overnourishment with high-fat diets and perinatal undernourishment in mice have been linked to a higher motivation toward food, resulting in an alteration in food intake. Clusterin (CLU), a multifaced protein, is overexpressed in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) of over-fed rats, as well as in those that suffered chronic undernutrition. Moreover, an increase of this protein was observed in the plasma of obese patients with food addiction, suggesting the implication of CLU in this eating disorder. To characterize CLU’s cellular mechanisms, in vitro experiments of undernutrition were performed using dopaminergic SH-SY5Y cells. To mimic in vivo dietary conditions, cells were treated with different fetal bovine serum (FBS) concentrations, resulting in control (C group) diet (10% FBS), undernourishment (U group) diet (0.5% FBS), and undernourishment diet followed by restoration of control diet (UC group) (0.5 + 10% FBS). Undernourishment compromised cell viability and proliferation, and concomitantly increased CLU secretion as well as the cytosolic pool of the protein, while decreasing the mitochondrial level. The restoration of normal conditions tended to recover cell physiology, and the normal levels and distribution of CLU. This research study is a step forward toward the characterization of clusterin as a potential marker for food addiction and nutritional status.

Successful partnerships between researchers, experts, and public health authorities have been critical to navigate the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic worldwide. In this collaboration, mathematical models have played a decisive role in informing public policy, with findings effectively translated into public health measures that have shaped the pandemic in Costa Rica. As a result of interdisciplinary and cross-institutional collaboration, we constructed a multilayer network model that incorporates a diverse contact structure for each individual. In July 2020, we used this model to test the effect of lifting restrictions on population mobility after a so-called “epidemiological fence” imposed to contain the country’s first big wave of cases. Later, in August 2020, we used it to predict the effects of an open and close strategy (the Hammer and Dance). Scenarios constructed in July 2020 showed that lifting restrictions on population mobility after less than three weeks of epidemiological fence would produce a sharp increase in cases. Results from scenarios in August 2020 indicated that the Hammer and Dance strategy would only work with 50% of the population adhering to mobility restrictions. The development, evolution, and applications of a multilayer network model of Covid-19 in Costa Rica has guided decision-makers to anticipate implementing sanitary measures and contributed to gain valuable time to increase hospital capacity.

Offering a suitable educational response to students with disabilities continues to be a challenge for higher education institutions, where the teaching attitude, the educational strategies to deal with diversity and the obstacles or difficulties continue to condition the commitment to inclusive education at universities. This systematic review has been carried out following the indications of the PRISMA method. The main objective is to present critical information about the educational response offered to students with disabilities at higher education institutions. Fourteen articles dealing with teaching attitude, difficulties and strategies used were reviewed. The results show how there is a positive attitude towards students with disabilities in some areas, various inclusive strategies are established in the classroom and there are still obstacles that make it difficult to meet all students’ needs. In conclusion, inclusive education continues to be a pending issue for university institutions, which are moving towards inclusion, yet at a slower pace, in comparison to other education levels.

Abstract Background Systemic hypertension (SH) is common in dogs with hyperadrenocorticism (HAC) however there are not many studies assessing its prevalence and risk factors. Objectives To determine the prevalence and severity of SH in dogs with HAC and its association with clinical and laboratory findings to identify potential risk factors. Animals Sixty‐six client owned dogs with spontaneous HAC. Methods Retrospective cross‐sectional study. Medical records of dogs with HAC were reviewed. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was measured using Doppler ultrasonography. Clinical signs, physical examination findings and clinicopathologic data (CBC, serum biochemistry and electrolytes, urinalysis and urinary culture, and adrenal function tests) were reviewed for analysis. Results Prevalence of SH (≥150 mm Hg) was 82% (54/66) and prevalence of severe SH (≥180 mm Hg) was 46% (30/66). All dogs with thrombocytosis had SH (P = .002), and a platelet count ≥438 × 103/μL was 100% specific and 61.1% sensitive to predict SH (AUC = .802, P = .001). Median potassium levels were lower in hypertensive dogs (4.1 mEq/L, range 3.1‐5.4 mEq/L) than in normotensive ones (4.5 mEq/L, range 4.0‐5.0 mEq/L) (P = .007). Dogs with UPC ≥ 0.5 had higher median SBP than those without proteinuria (P = .03). Dogs with concurrent diabetes mellitus seemed to have a reduced risk of SH (OR = .118, 95%CI = .022‐.626, P = .02). Conclusions and Clinical Importance Systemic hypertension is common in dogs with HAC and is frequently severe. Blood pressure should be routinely assessed in these dogs, especially if thrombocytosis, proteinuria or low potassium concentrations are present.

Catechins have been shown to display a great variety of biological activities, prominent among them are their chemo preventive and chemotherapeutic properties against several types of cancer. The amphiphilic nature of catechins points to the membrane as a potential target for their actions. 3,4,5-Trimethoxybenzoate of catechin (TMBC) is a modified structural analog of catechin that shows significant antiproliferative activity against melanoma and breast cancer cells. Phosphatidylglycerol is an anionic membrane phospholipid with important physical and biochemical characteristics that make it biologically relevant. In addition, phosphatidylglycerol is a preeminent component of bacterial membranes. Using biomimetic membranes, we examined the effects of TMBC on the structural and dynamic properties of phosphatidylglycerol bilayers by means of biophysical techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy, together with an analysis through molecular dynamics simulation. We found that TMBC perturbs the thermotropic gel to liquid-crystalline phase transition and promotes immiscibility in both phospholipid phases. The modified catechin decreases the thickness of the bilayer and is able to form hydrogen bonds with the carbonyl groups of the phospholipid. Experimental data support the simulated data that locate TMBC as mostly forming clusters in the middle region of each monolayer approaching the carbonyl moiety of the phospholipid. The presence of TMBC modifies the structural and dynamic properties of the phosphatidylglycerol bilayer. The decrease in membrane thickness and the change of the hydrogen bonding pattern in the interfacial region of the bilayer elicited by the catechin might contribute to the alteration of the events taking place in the membrane and might help to understand the mechanism of action of the diverse effects displayed by catechins.

The treatment and valorization of organic solid waste has become a promising alternative to increase intensive crop productivity while reducing its environmental impact. Currently, reusing improved organic waste as novel biofertilizers is a vital tool to adapt semiarid agricultural regions to climate change, but this has been scarcely studied in aromatic crops. The present study aims to assess the greenhouse gas emissions, soil properties, and crop yield of a dill crop using a drip irrigation system with a normalized N application rate of 160 kg N ha−1. We compare eight different fertilizing scenarios grouped into organic-based (manures and compost) and inorganic-based inputs (NPK commodities and slow-release formulations). GHG fluxes were measured during the 57-day fertigation period using static chambers. Key soil properties were measured previous to fertilizer applications and at harvest, coinciding with crop yield estimations. An increase in soil organic carbon was observed with stabilized organic treatments at 0–20 cm soil depth. The results show that stabilized organic-based materials lowered NO3− concentrations in dill biomass more than synthetic fertilizers, producing similar yields to those with synthetic fertilizers. In general, N2O emissions were positively affected by the treatments. Local specific emission factors for N2O were determined (0.08%), which were substantially lower than the default value (0.51%) of IPCC. The cumulative CO2 emissions were high in all the organic scenarios compared to the control treatment (277 kg C-CO2 ha−1), probably due to differences in labile organic C contents. Organic-based treatments showed multiple positive effects on crop quality, crop yields, and GHG mitigation potential. The use of organic amendments is an optimized N fertilizing strategy to promote circular economy and sustainability.

The impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on wildlife is largely unevaluated, and extended surveillance of animal species is needed to reach a consensus on the role of animals in the emergence and maintenance of SARS-CoV-2. This infection has been detected in farmed and domestic animals and wild animals, mainly in captivity. The interactions or shared resources with wildlife could represent a potential transmission pathway for the SARS-CoV-2 spill over to other wild species and could lead to health consequences or the establishment of new reservoirs in susceptible hosts. This study evaluated the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in European mink (Mustela lutreola) and American mink (Neogale vison) in Spain by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using the receptor binding domain (RBD) of Spike antigen in serum samples and/or by RT-qPCR assays in oropharyngeal and rectal swabs. From January 2020 to February 2022, a total of 162 animals (127 European mink and 35 American mink) with no evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection were included in the study. Antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 were not found in the serum samples analysed (n = 126), nor was the virus amplified by RT-qPCR (n = 160 swabs). Our results suggest that the potential role of wild mink and the European mink bred in captivity and released to the wild as dispersers of SARS-CoV-2 is so far low. However, wildlife surveillance for early detection of human and animal risks should be continued. In this sense, epidemiological monitoring measures, including serology and molecular analysis, are necessary.

Impaired wound healing in patients with type 2 diabetes (DM2) is characterized by chronic inflammation, which delays wound closure. Specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs) are bioactive molecules produced from essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), principally omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). SPMs are potent regulators of inflammation and have been used to suppress chronic inflammation in peripheral artery disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and central nervous system syndromes. LIPINOVA® is a commercially available safe-grade nutritional supplement made from a fractionated marine lipid concentrate derived from anchovy and sardine oil that is rich in SPMs and EPA, as well as DHA precursors. Here, we assessed the effect of LIPINOVA® in wound dressing applications. LIPINOVA® showed biocompatibility with keratinocytes and fibroblasts, reduced the abundance of pro-inflammatory macrophages (Mφ1), and promoted in vitro wound closure. Daily application of the marine oil to open wounds made by punch biopsy in db/db mice promoted wound closure by accelerating the resolution of inflammation, inducing neoangiogenesis and Mφ1/Mφ2 macrophage polarization. In conclusion, LIPINOVA® displays pro-resolutive properties and could be exploited as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of diabetic ulcers.

Suicide affects all sociodemographic levels, age groups, and populations worldwide. The factors that can increase the risk of suicidal tendencies are widely studied. The aim of this study was to analyze the types and combinations of toxics found in fatal suicide victims with different suicide mechanisms. A total of 355 autopsies were retrospectively studied, and 26 toxics were determined and related to mechanisms of suicide. Hanging (55%), drug overdose (22.7%), and jumping from a height (17.8%) were most represented suicide mechanisms with positive toxicology. Hanging was the most represented in men (50.3%; p = 0.019), while jumping from a height was more represented in women (29.7%, p = 0.028). Drugs of abuse were the most frequent toxics found in men (55.5%; p < 0.001), while medicines were the most frequent type found in women (70.3%, p < 0.001). Alcohol, nordiazepam, cocaine, and venlafaxine were the most consumed toxics. Benzodiazepines and venlafaxine were found in suicides involving drug overdose, hanging, and jumping from a height. In conclusion, most suicides were associated with drug abuse in men. Hanging was more represented in men and jumping from a height in women. Alcohol was present in combination with other toxics and medicines. The toxicological analysis is fundamental to understanding consumption patterns and establishing strategies and protocols for detecting and preventing suicide.

The constraints associated with peat use in horticulture has led to a search for alternative materials for their use as growing media. The organic materials derived from palm trees (composted or not) can constitute an alternative due to their ligneous and fibrous character, similar to coir fiber. This work studies the feasibility of using several palm-tree-derived (Phoenix dactylifera L.) organic materials as growing media ingredients for the transplant production of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. Senna). For this, the following substrates were studied: five mixtures for each palm-derived material (palm trunks and leaves and composts derived from palm trunk and leaves), in the proportions of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% by volume, mixed with coir fiber. Coir fiber at the proportion 100% was used as the control treatment. Physical, physico-chemical, and chemical analyses were conducted on the substrates, and the germination and morphological parameters of the seedlings were examined. Chemometric tools, such as random forest (RF) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were also used to evaluate the data obtained. The type and proportion of material used in the growing media principally affected the parameters studied in the lettuce seedlings. The substrates with a percentage of compost lower than 60% showed behavior closer to that observed in the growing media with 100% coir fiber and with the mixture of coir fiber and palm leaves or trunks at all proportions.

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative condition initially characterized by the presence of tremor, muscle stiffness and impaired balance, with the deposition of insoluble protein aggregates in Lewy’s Bodies the histopathological hallmark of the disease. Although different gene variants are linked to Parkinson disease, mutations in the Leucine-Rich Repeat Kinase 2 (LRRK2) gene are one of the most frequent causes of Parkinson’s disease related to genetic mutations. LRRK2 toxicity has been mainly explained by an increase in kinase activity, but alternative mechanisms have emerged as underlying causes for Parkinson’s disease, such as the imbalance in LRRK2 homeostasis and the involvement of LRRK2 in aggregation and spreading of α-synuclein toxicity. In this review, we recapitulate the main LRRK2 pathological mutations that contribute to Parkinson’s disease and the different cellular and therapeutic strategies devised to correct LRRK2 homeostasis. In this review, we describe the main cellular control mechanisms that regulate LRRK2 folding and aggregation, such as the chaperone network and the protein-clearing pathways such as the ubiquitin–proteasome system and the autophagic-lysosomal pathway. We will also address the more relevant strategies to modulate neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease through the regulation of LRRK2, using small molecules or LRRK2 silencing.

3,4,5-Trimethoxybenzoate of catechin (TMBC) is a semisynthetic catechin which shows strong antiproliferative activity against malignant melanoma cells. The amphiphilic nature of the molecule suggests that the membrane could be a potential site of action, hence the study of its interaction with lipid bilayers is mandatory in order to gain information on the effect of the catechin on the membrane properties and dynamics. Anionic phospholipids, though being minor components of the membrane, possess singular physical and biochemical properties that make them physiologically essential. Utilizing phosphatidylserine biomimetic membranes, we study the interaction between the catechin and anionic bilayers, bringing together a variety of experimental techniques and molecular dynamics simulation. The experimental data suggest that the molecule is embedded into the phosphatidylserine bilayers, where it perturbs the thermotropic gel to liquid crystalline phase transition. In the gel phase, the catechin promotes the formation of interdigitation, and in the liquid crystalline phase, it decreases the bilayer thickness and increases the hydrogen bonding pattern of the interfacial region of the bilayer. The simulation data agree with the experimental ones and indicate that the molecule is located in the interior of the anionic bilayer as monomer and small clusters reaching the carbonyl region of the phospholipid, where it also disturbs the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between neighboring lipids. Our observations suggest that the catechin incorporates well into phosphatidylserine bilayers, where it produces structural changes that could affect the functioning of the membrane.

Cyanide is a toxic compound widely used in mining and jewelry industries, as well as in the synthesis of many different chemicals. Cyanide toxicity derives from its high affinity for metals, which causes inhibition of relevant metalloenzymes. However, some cyanide-degrading microorganisms like the alkaliphilic bacterium Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes CECT5344 may detoxify hazardous industrial wastewaters that contain elevated cyanide and metal concentrations. Considering that iron availability is strongly reduced in the presence of cyanide, mechanisms for iron homeostasis should be required for cyanide biodegradation. Previous omic studies revealed that in the presence of a cyanide-containing jewelry residue the strain CECT5344 overproduced the dihydrodipicolinate synthase DapA1, a protein involved in lysine metabolism that also participates in the synthesis of dipicolinates, which are excellent metal chelators. In this work, a dapA1– mutant of P. pseudoalcaligenes CECT5344 has been generated and characterized. This mutant showed reduced growth and cyanide consumption in media with the cyanide-containing wastewater. Intracellular levels of metals like iron, copper and zinc were increased in the dapA1– mutant, especially in cells grown with the jewelry residue. In addition, a differential quantitative proteomic analysis by LC-MS/MS was carried out between the wild-type and the dapA1– mutant strains in media with jewelry residue. The mutation in the dapA1 gene altered the expression of several proteins related to urea cycle and metabolism of arginine and other amino acids. Additionally, the dapA1– mutant showed increased levels of the global nitrogen regulator PII and the glutamine synthetase. This proteomic study has also highlighted that the DapA1 protein is relevant for cyanide resistance, oxidative stress and iron homeostasis response, which is mediated by the ferric uptake regulator Fur. DapA1 is required to produce dipicolinates that could act as iron chelators, conferring protection against oxidative stress and allowing the regeneration of Fe-S centers to reactivate cyanide-damaged metalloproteins.

The viral gastroenteritis mediated by rotavirus remains a major health problem, causing significant infant morbidity and mortality, and health care costs worldwide. Diverse studies have indicated that some milk-derived fractions exhibit antirotaviral activity, associated to proteins such as immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, mucins, and lactadherin. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to enable greater understanding of the interaction mechanisms involving rotaviruses, host cells, and neutralizing agents. Our results demonstrate that bovine milk is a source of antirotaviral compounds against a wide range of strains. The neutralizing activity of milk fractions was found to be directed to the spike protein VP4, while the purified milk proteins inhibited through interaction with either VP4 and/or VP7. The present results highlight the huge potential of bovine milk components for their inclusion in functional foods to control rotavirus diarrhea.

Background/Aims: Chronic inflammation contributes to cartilage degeneration during the progression of osteoarthritis (OA). Adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSC) show great potential to treat inflammatory and degradative processes in OA and have demonstrated paracrine effects in chondrocytes. In the present work, we have isolated and characterized the extracellular vesicles from human AD-MSC to investigate their role in the chondroprotective actions of these cells. Methods: AD-MSC were isolated by collagenase treatment from adipose tissue from healthy individuals subjected to abdominal lipectomy surgery. Microvesicles and exosomes were obtained from conditioned medium by filtration and differential centrifugation. Chondrocytes from OA patients were used in primary culture and stimulated with 10 ng/ml interleukin(IL)-1β in the presence or absence of AD-MSC microvesicles, exosomes or conditioned medium. Protein expression was investigated by ELISA and immunofluorescence, transcription factor-DNA binding by ELISA, gene expression by real-time PCR, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by radioimmunoassay, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity and nitric oxide (NO) production by fluorometry. Results: In OA chondrocytes stimulated with IL-1β, microvesicles and exosomes reduced the production of inflammatory mediators tumor necrosis factor-α, IL-6, PGE2 and NO. The downregulation of cyclooxygenase-2 and microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 would lead to the decreased PGE2 production while the effect on NO could depend on the reduction of inducible nitric oxide synthase expression. Treatment of OA chondrocytes with extracellular vesicles also decreased the release of MMP activity and MMP-13 expression whereas the production of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and the expression of collagen II were significantly enhanced. The reduction of inflammatory and catabolic mediators could be the consequence of a lower activation of nuclear factor-κB and activator protein-1. The upregulation of annexin A1 specially in MV may contribute to the anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective effects of AD-MSC. Conclusions: Our data support the interest of AD-MSC extracellular vesicles to develop new therapeutic approaches in joint conditions.

Over the past few years, there has been a great development of the sheep dairy sector in Spain and a wide variability in the production outcomes of farms, although most of the farms have similar environmental and economic constraints. Milk quality evaluation is important not only for cheese production, but also for other dairy products. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the effect of some factors on bulk-tank milk characteristics of Manchega sheep, with special attention to casein and urea contents and colour indices. Factors of variation such as season, annual milk yield of ewe (AMYE), the enrolment (or not) in a breeding programme (BPM) and the feeding strategy of farms have been considered. The study included 77 farms distributed along La Mancha region, in Spain. Data about production practices and feeding strategy were also collected from these farms. A total of 308 analytical determinations of milk characteristics including fat, protein, total solids, casein, lactose, protein/total solids, casein/fat, pH, urea content, colour indices and somatic cell count were analysed by automated methods. The results of the present work indicate that season was the source of variation with the greatest effect on chemical characteristics of bulk-tank milk, except for casein/fat ratio for which the difference was smaller. The feeding strategy effects on characteristics of milk have also been confirmed Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the feeding strategies are applied more coherently according to their productive characteristics in farms with small and medium size than in farms with the largest herd size.

The organic wastes of plant origin and, in particular, those coming from sources related to tourism activities, such as those generated from golf courses and touristic coasts, constitute an increasing concern due to the rise in their production and their unsuitable management. Thus, this work aimed to assess the use of different composting strategies to manage these specific green wastes, such as grass clippings and pruning waste from a golf course and marine plant debris, mainly from posidonia (Posidonia oceanica L.). To this end, two composting scenarios were established: the first only considered green wastes in the composition of the composting mixtures, and the second used sewage sludge as a co-composting agent. The temperature of the piles was monitored, and physicochemical and chemical parameters were also studied throughout the process. The results obtained showed that composting is a feasible method to manage and recycle this type of green waste, obtaining end products with suitable physicochemical and chemical characteristics. However, proportions of sea plant wastes in the composting mixture higher than 30% can compromise the fertilizing value of the final compost. Moreover, the use of an additional co-composting agent (sewage sludge) improved the characteristics of the end products obtained, provided that this co-composting agent had suitable initial characteristics.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the zoonotic causative agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that has caused a pandemic situation with millions of infected humans worldwide. Among domestic animals, there have been limited studies regarding the transmissibility and exposure to the infection in natural conditions. Some animals are exposed and/or susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection, such as cats, ferrets and dogs. By contrast, there is no information about the susceptibility of ruminants to SARS-CoV-2. This study tested the antibody response in 90 ovine pre-pandemic serum samples and 336 sheep serum samples from the pandemic period (June 2020 to March 2021). In both cases, the animals were in close contact with a veterinary student community composed of more than 700 members. None of the serum samples analyzed was seroreactive based on an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike antigen. In this sense, no statistical difference was observed compared to the pre-pandemic sheep. Our results suggest that it seems unlikely that sheep could play a relevant role in the epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection. This is the first study to report the absence of evidence of sheep exposure to SARS-CoV-2 in natural conditions.

This study aims to analyze the implications of linguistic mediation processes and educational proactivity in schools for the socio-educational adaptation of immigrant students. The study is based on empirical research and the perspectives of the main actors: the immigrant students themselves. To this end, a non-experimental and descriptive quantitative methodology was used. The sample consisted of 100 students of foreign origin enrolled in an Italian school located in a typical socio-cultural environment. The results show significant differences in linguistic mediation and socio-educational variables and differences in expectations of progress and social adaptation of students born outside Italy vis-a-vis students who, although born in Italy, are still considered foreigners. It will also analyze teaching proactivity as a communication facilitator for first-generation immigrant pupils born outside Italy. In conclusion, it is noted that, to favor multicultural environments where all students, regardless of their origin, feel accepted, integrated, and welcomed, it is necessary to utilize all available resources to promote improvements in teaching-learning processes and strengthen social relations.

La producción ovina lechera adquiere gran importancia en la cuenca mediterránea con un 28% de la producción mundial, que contribuyen a la fijación de la población rural y al mantenimiento de un sector trasformador enfocado a los productos tradicionales. Uno de los retos a los que enfrenta el sector es el de mantener la calidad higiénico-sanitaria de la leche, que en la actualidad es evaluada por los sistemas de control de la calidad mediante el recuento de mesófilos totales. Sin embargo, la calidad de la leche de oveja está relacionada con múltiples géneros microbianos, cuya presencia genera diferentes efectos en la leche y productos derivados. El objetivo del presente trabajo ha sido investigar la calidad microbiológica diferencial de la leche de oveja de tanque y la relación entre los diferentes grupos evaluados. Para ello se recogieron 308 muestras de leche de tanque procedentes, de 77 ganaderías, para el estudio microbiológico diferencial de los grupos mayoritarios presentes en la leche (mesófilos totales, termodúricos, psicotrofos, coliformes totales, cocos Gram positivos coagulasa negativos, bacterias ácido lácticas, gérmenes butíricos y estafilococos coagulasa positivos). El mayor porcentaje de muestras de los diferentes microorganismos se encuentran concentradas en recuentos bajos e intermedios. El estudio refleja la necesidad de optimizar el manejo higiénico (limpieza y desinfección de la ganadería, proceso de refrigeración, manejo de la alimentación, principalmente) y sanitario (actuación adecuada frente las mastitis clínicas) para el control de determinados grupos microbianos. Además, la ausencia de relación entre el recuento de gérmenes totales con determinados grupos microbianos importantes desde el punto de vista sanitario (estafilococos coagulasa positivos) o tecnológico (bacterias ácido butíricas) informan de la necesidad de monitorizarlos en los sistemas de control de calidad de la leche de oveja.

Introducción. La gangrena de Fournier es la fasciítis necrosante genital y perineal. El objetivo del estudio fue analizar nuestra experiencia hospitalaria en su manejo. Materiales y métodos. Estudio descriptivo retrospectivo de los pacientes atendidos con gangrena de Fournier en el Servicio de Urgencias del Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón, entre 1998 y 2008. Resultados. Se incluyeron 34 pacientes, 30 hombres y 4 mujeres, con una mediana de edad de 69 años, con algún factor de riesgo en 30 de ellos, el más frecuente de los cuales fue la hipertensión arterial (n=18). La etiología más frecuente fue la colorrectal (n=18). La presentación clínica más común fue el dolor perineal (n=21) y el eritema perineal (n=19). Los datos analíticos alterados más importantes fueron: hemoglobina, 11,8 g/dl; hematocrito, 32,7%; leucocitos, 17.300/mm 3 (88,2% neutrófilos); INR (International Normalized Ratio) 1,3 y urea 73,5 mg/dl. El tratamiento se basó en el desbridamiento quirúrgico y, como tratamientos complementarios, se practicaron cistostomía (3), colostomía (7) y orquidectomía (2). Los gérmenes más aislados fueron Escherichia coli (63%), Bacteroides spp. (55%) y Peptostreptococcus spp. (42%). La terapia antibiótica empírica más empleada fue el imipenem (44%), seguida de la combinación penicilina más gentamicina más metronidazol (26%). Fallecieron nueve pacientes (26%). Discusión. En nuestro medio, la gangrena de Fournier tuvo una baja incidencia. Su causa más frecuente fue la colorrectal y su diagnóstico fue fundamentalmente clínico. El tratamiento fue multidisciplinario, con soporte hemodinámico, cirugía y terapia antibiótica de amplio espectro. La tasa de mortalidad fue elevada.

Background: The objective of this study was to analyse the prevalence of metabolic bone disease (MBD) in a cohort of Southern European patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and to identify associated risk factors in this population. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, both cross-sectional and longitudinal study of MBD, assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), among patients diagnosed with IBD and previously recognized risk factors for this complication from two referral Spanish institutions. Results: A total of 612 patients (58.6% diagnosed with Crohn’s disease) were included. Mean (SD) age was 44.9 (14.7) years; 71.7% of patients received at least one tapered dosage of corticosteroids before first DXA. MBD and osteoporosis were diagnosed in 66.4% and 21.4% of patients, respectively. At baseline, male gender, menopause and ulcerative colitis were found as independent risks factors for osteoporosis, whereas age, more than three IBD-related hospitalizations and previous steroid treatment were found as independent risks factors for MBD. A total of 261 patients had at least a second DXA and were included in the longitudinal study; median follow up was 56.4 months. Logistic regression model identified menopause, ulcerative colitis and baseline lumbar DXA T -score value, but not steroid treatment, as risk factors for worsening ⩾1 SD in follow-up DXA T -score. According to guidelines, all patients under treatment with corticosteroids received calcium and vitamin D supplements. Conclusion: MBD is a frequent complication in south-European IBD patients. Routine evaluation of bone density when risk factors are present, as well as calcium plus D vitamin prophylaxis in patients under corticosteroid treatment should be recommended.

The alkaliphilic bacterium Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes CECT5344 uses free cyanide and several metal-cyanide complexes as the sole nitrogen source and tolerates high concentrations of metals like copper, zinc and iron, which are present in the jewelry wastewaters. To understand deeply the regulatory mechanisms involved in the transcriptional regulation of cyanide-containing wastewaters detoxification by P. pseudoalcaligenes CECT5344, RNA-Seq has been performed from cells cultured with a cyanide-containing jewelry wastewater, sodium cyanide or ammonium chloride as the sole nitrogen source. Small RNAs (sRNAs) that may have potential regulatory functions under cyanotrophic conditions were identified. In total 20 sRNAs were identified to be differentially expressed when compared the jewelry residue versus ammonium as nitrogen source, 16 of which could be amplified successfully by RT-PCR. As predicted targets of these 16 sRNAs were several components of the nit1C gene cluster encoding the nitrilase NitC essential for cyanide assimilation, the cioAB gene cluster that codes for the cyanide-insensitive cytochrome bd-type terminal oxidase, the medium length-polyhydroxyalkanoates (ml-PHAs) gene cluster, and gene clusters related with a global nitrogen limitation response like those coding for glutamine synthase and urease. Other targets were non-clustered genes (or their products) involved in metal resistance and iron acquisition, such as metal extrusion systems and the ferric uptake regulatory (Fur) protein, and a GntR-like regulatory family member probably involved in the regulation of the cyanide assimilation process in the strain CECT5344. Induction of genes targeted by sRNAs in the jewelry residue was demonstrated by qRT-PCR.

Animal infections with SARS-CoV-2 have been reported in different countries and several animal species have been proven to be susceptible to infection with SARS-CoV-2 both naturally and by experimental infection. Moreover, infections under natural conditions in more than 20 mink farms have been reported where humans could have been the source of infection for minks. However, little information is available about the susceptibility of pet animals under natural conditions and currently there is no SARS-CoV-2 epidemiological assessment occurrence in household ferrets. In this study, the presence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was evaluated in serum samples obtained from 127 household ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) in the Province of Valencia (Spain). Two ferrets tested positive to SARS-CoV-2 (1.57%) by in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay based on receptor binding domain (RBD) of Spike antigen. Furthermore, anti-RBD SARS-CoV-2 antibodies persisted at detectable levels in a seropositive SARS-CoV-2 domestic ferret beyond 129 days since the first time antibodies were detected. This study reports for the first time the evidence of household pet ferrets exposure to SARS-CoV-2 in Spain to date.

The objective of this work was to study the agronomic effects of the application of agri-food composts in almond trees (Prunus dulcis L.) cultivated in two different areas with different almond varieties (cv. Guara and cv. Ferraduel), with both in organic farming conditions throughout two cropping cycles. To reach this objective, almond production and quality issues (seed production, kernel yield, nutrient contents and kernel quality), as well as several physico-chemical and biological properties of the amended soils at the beginning and at the end of each campaign were studied. The four composts used (C1, C2, C3 and C4) were elaborated mainly using exhausted grape marc (EGM) and other wastes (waste from orange juice production, OW; waste from tomato soup production, TW; cattle manure, CM; and sheep manure, SM). Two treatments were used as control treatments, one based on sheep manure and another without any amendment. The composts used produced similar results in kernel yield and production compared to the traditional treatment (sheep manure). However, the thickness of the kernel was higher in the treatments using composts with exhausted grape marc and sheep manure or tomato soup waste. In relation to the almond quality, few differences related to the effect of treatments were observed, except for the content of proteins, sucrose, some fatty acids and vegetal sterols.

Spinach is rich in minerals, vitamins, phytochemicals and bioactive compounds with health-beneficial effects; however, this plant also tends to accumulate oxalates and nitrates in their leaves. Apart from genotype, nutrition is the pre-harvest factor that mostly affects quality attributes at harvest. Particularly, the application of compost extracts (CE) may induce resistance against soil-borne diseases and favour secondary metabolism, increasing antioxidant capacity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different types of fertilization with or without the addition of CE, on harvest quality and shelf life of minimally processed spinach (Spinacia oleracea, var. Shrike RZ) stored during 12 days at 4 °C. A compost extract (CE) was prepared by mixing a compost from agri-food wastes (vine pruning, leek waste and olive mill waste) with deionized water. CE foliar applications were done from days 28 and 56 after sowing. The treatments applied were: Control; Control + CE; NPK (inorganic NPK fertilizer 15-15-15); NPK + CE; DMPP (ENTEC Nitrofoska® plus the nitrification inhibitor 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP)) and DMPP + CE. After harvest, spinach leaves were minimally processed and packaged to generate a passive modified atmosphere. Nitrate content in the control treatment was reduced by the addition of CE, although in the rest of the treatments, CE addition did not produce any effect. For nitrite contents, the lowest value was obtained for the Control + CE. Moreover, the oxalate content was the lowest for the control treatment with a decreasing trend throughout the storage. The treatment Control + CE also showed the highest initial total phenolic contents, with very similar values at the end of shelf life to those observed at harvest for all the treatments. The highest differences in color as regards the initial values were detected for DMPP. Microbial loads increased for all the treatments without differences between them. The atmosphere reached at the end of the cold storage was the same for all the cases, with CO2 and O2 around 10 kPa for each one of them. After 12 days at 4 °C, all the treatments were above the limit of usability, with the spinach leaves acceptable for consumption. The results found in this study indicate that the addition of CE might be convenient for obtaining spinach rich in bioactive compounds and with low concentrations of antinutritional factors, without affecting the microbial load of the final product.

Small interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA) has the potential to revolutionize therapeutics since it can knockdown very efficiently the target protein. It is starting to be widely used to interfere with cell infection by HIV. However, naked siRNAs are unable to get into the cell, requiring the use of carriers to protect them from degradation and transporting them across the cell membrane. There is no information about which is the most efficient endocytosis route for high siRNA transfection efficiency. One of the most promising carriers to efficiently deliver siRNA are cyclodextrin derivatives. We have used nanocomplexes composed of siRNA and a β-cyclodextrin derivative, AMC6, with a very high transfection efficiency to selectively knockdown clathrin heavy chain, caveolin 1, and p21 Activated Kinase 1 to specifically block clathrin-mediated, caveolin-mediated and macropinocytosis endocytic pathways. The main objective was to identify whether there is a preferential endocytic pathway associated with high siRNA transfection efficiency. We have found that macropinocytosis is the preferential entry pathway for the nanoparticle and its associated siRNA cargo. However, blockade of macropinocytosis does not affect AMC6-mediated transfection efficiency, suggesting that macropinocytosis blockade can be functionally compensated by an increase in clathrin- and caveolin-mediated endocytosis.

This work studies the changes in δ15N signature during the composting of sewage sludge (MS) and agri-food sludge (AS) with different bulking agents and the potential relationships between the changes in this parameter with both the source of the organic matter used as a raw material and the stability of the end-materials obtained. For this, eleven mixtures were prepared in commercial composting conditions using sewage sludge from municipal wastewater in a range of 60–85% (on a fresh weight basis) or agri-food sludge in a range of 65–75%, mixed with seven different pruning wastes as bulking agents. The thermal profile was monitored throughout the composting processes, and the main physico-chemical and chemical parameters were determined. The results obtained confirmed a correct development of the composting processes, observing slight differences in process evolution depending on the type of sludge used. The composts obtained showed adequate contents of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) and reached a good degree of maturity. Significant differences in the specific nitrogen isotopic composition were found in the initial materials. Moreover, the results suggest that the type of sludge had a main contribution in the δ15N value of the initial composting mixtures. The use of δ15N is recommended as an indicator of the composting process, especially to evaluate N dynamics, and the quality of the resultant compost.

El cambio de valores en la sociedad postmoderna nos sitúa ante un debate recurrente sobre una posible brecha generacional entre jóvenes y mayores. La postmodernidad, el aumento del individualismo y el relativismo contrastan hoy con las necesidades que plantean la situación económica y la reformulación de las prioridades axiológicas. Ante las circunstancias actuales, cuestionamos si la crisis mundial no ha venido a homogeneizar en cierta medida los valores de jóvenes y mayores, al vivir ambos etapas de socialización en contextos de mayor escasez e inseguridad. El objetivo de este estudio es comparar las similitudes y diferencias en la apreciación de los valores de ambas cohortes, según la escala RVS (Rokeach). En los resultados encontramos considerables semejanzas en los valores básicos que priorizan ambos grupos. Pero también se sigue evidenciando en los jóvenes un mayor índice de postmodernismo al presentar una mayor pluralidad y diversificación hacia valores más individualistas e intrapersonales.

For a non-empty class of groups L, a finite group G=AB is said to be an L-connected product of the subgroups A and B if 〈a,b〉∈L for all a∈A and b∈B. In a previous paper, we prove that, for such a product, when L=S is the class of finite soluble groups, then [A,B] is soluble. This generalizes the theorem of Thompson that states the solubility of finite groups whose two-generated subgroups are soluble. In the present paper, our result is applied to extend to finite groups previous research about finite groups in the soluble universe. In particular, we characterize connected products for relevant classes of groups, among others, the class of metanilpotent groups and the class of groups with nilpotent derived subgroup. Additionally, we give local descriptions of relevant subgroups of finite groups.

La demanda turística sobre Andalucía (región al sur de España), desde los países europeos, es medida a través del número de turistas alojados en establecimientos hoteleros, para el año 2017. Un modelo econométrico de gravedad sencillo explica dicha demanda, usando elasticidades, a través del PIB de cada país y de la distancia en kilómetros desde dicho país a Andalucía. La obtención de pendiente cercana a la unidad con respecto al PIB nos permite definir una nueva variable, la demanda relativizada por el PIB, y modelizar la misma a partir de la distancia. La pendiente negativa de esta nueva modelización permite plantear la formulación de políticas que minimicen el factor distancia de los países europeos a Andalucía si se quiere incrementar la demanda.

Este artículo pretende hacer un recorrido a través del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano, surgido en la segunda mitad del xx, pero que aún sigue estando muy vivo en el siglo xxi. Lo que califica como «nuevo cine» no solo fue una moda, pues sus valores y tipologías universales, y específicamente latinoamericanas, se han convertido en una constante de la narrativa y de la producción fílmicas de las primeras décadas del presente siglo. Y aunque surjan nuevos modelos, técnicas y tendencias cinematográficas, las claves del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano perviven y al mismo tiempo se universalizan.

La lactoferrina es una proteína presente en la leche, a la cual se le confieren importantes propiedades como lo son participar en el transporte de hierro, actividades inmunológicas y antimicrobianas. El creciente interés comercial por utilizar las propiedades benéficas de la lactoferrina en diferentes tipos de alimentos, entre ellos las leches infantiles, crea la necesidad de contar con pruebas analíticas para determinar la concentración de la misma. Es importante que estas pruebas sean acordes para detectar las cantidades que se encuentran en la leche, así como también los niveles de suplementación para alimentos, fórmulas infantiles y suplementos proteínicos. El objetivo de la presente investigación es determinar el contenido de lactoferrina utilizando el método inmunoquímico de ELISA, en diferentes leches infantiles comerciales; y en las mismas leches, tras someter las muestras a diferentes tratamientos con microondas y observar el efecto del tratamiento sobre la estabilidad de la lactoferrina. De los resultados obtenidos concluimos dos aspectos importantes. El primero de ellos, que los tratamientos para la obtención de leche en polvo afectan el contenido de lactoferrina en el producto final. Como segundo punto, que el calentamiento intenso en microondas de las leches para alimentación infantil suplementadas con lactoferrina bovina disminuye considerablemente el contenido de la proteína activa, sin embargo los calentamientos moderados no afectan el contenido de esta proteína en la leche.

The present study analyzes the relation between delinquent behaviors, interpersonal values and academic performance. It also analyzes the possible protective function of interpersonal values against delinquent behaviors. The Interpersonal Values Questionnaire (IVQ) was used to assess interpersonal values, and the Antisocial-Delinquent Behaviors Questionnaire (A-D) was employed to assess antisocial behaviors. The sample was made up of 885 students of Compulsory Secondary Education, aged from 14 to 17 years. The results show that individuals who fail a subject as well as those who repeat a course present higher means in delinquent behaviors. Repeaters present higher means in the values of recognition and leadership, and non-repeaters in the value stimulation, whereas students who do not fail obtain higher scores in the value benevolence. Students with high levels of recognition, independence, and leadership, as well as students with low levels of conformity and benevolence display significantly higher levels of delinquent behaviors. Lastly, the probability of presenting a high level of delinquent behaviors is greater in individuals with: high independence, high leadership, high recognition, low benevolence, and low conformity.

In this paper, a concrete case of application and use of the New Technologies for the permanent formation of adult education teachers is presented. The authors, after referring to the scientific assumptions underlying the programme, present the reasons why it is applied to adult education professionals; then, they make a presentation of the design, structure and functioning of the programme, which is not conceived as a single course with a beginning and an end, but as a formation network promoting shared reflection on real and specific situations and educational actions carried out by adult educational professionals. The authors wish to emphasize the collaboration between researchers and professionals from different regions and countries, and also the increase in the metacognition level of Adult Education Professionals about their own performance and formative process.

A través del trabajo de campo realizado con estudiantado, profesorado de Facultades de Formación del p rofesorado de diferentes universidades españolas y agentes sociales se han identificado las barreras que impiden la implementación de estrategias orientadas al aprendizaje de conocimientos y habilidades para la prevención y detección precoz de la violencia de género en la formación del futuro profesorado; así como también se han identificado experiencias que han superado estas barreras. s e recogen las percepciones acerca de las realidades que se viven en los centros educativos respecto a los casos de violencia de género y las opiniones sobre una formación de calidad en este tema.

RESUMEN. La teoría de los derechos fundamentales de Robert Alexy se fundamenta en un concepto material de norma jurídica que es de carácter doble. Por un lado, se define por los rasgos propios de los principios, en consonancia con la idea de argumentación correcta. Pero, por otro lado, sigue teniendo peso la validez jurídica de las normas que contienen derechos fundamentales, consideradas como reglas constitucionales. Tal y como se argumenta en el trabajo, esta ambigüedad de la teoría de la norma de Alexy permite distintos acercamientos, positivistas y no positivistas, que es signo de su riqueza teórica. ABSTRACT. The theory of the civil rights of Robert Alexy is based on a material concept of rule of law. It is two-fold. On the one hand, is defined by the traits of the principles, consistent with the idea of ??correct argument. But on the other hand, weight is still the legal validity of the rules contained civil rights, constitutional rules considered. As argued in the work, this ambiguity of the norm theory allows for different approaches Alexy, positivist and positivist, which is a sign of its theoretical richness

Introducción. La gangrena de Fournier es la fasciítis necrosante genital y perineal. El objetivo del estudio fue analizar nuestra experiencia hospitalaria en su manejo. Materiales y métodos. Estudio descriptivo retrospectivo de los pacientes atendidos con gangrena de Fournier en el Servicio de Urgencias del Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón, entre 1998 y 2008. Resultados. Se incluyeron 34 pacientes, 30 hombres y 4 mujeres, con una mediana de edad de 69 años, con algún factor de riesgo en 30 de ellos, el más frecuente de los cuales fue la hipertensión arterial (n=18). La etiología más frecuente fue la colorrectal (n=18). La presentación clínica más común fue el dolor perineal (n=21) y el eritema perineal (n=19). Los datos analíticos alterados más importantes fueron: hemoglobina, 11,8 g/dl; hematocrito, 32,7%; leucocitos, 17.300/mm3 (88,2% neutrófilos); INR (International Normalized Ratio) 1,3 y urea 73,5 mg/dl. El tratamiento se basó en el desbridamiento quirúrgico y, como tratamientos complementarios, se practicaron cistostomía (3), colostomía (7) y orquidectomía (2). Los gérmenes más aislados fueron Escherichia coli (63%), Bacteroides spp. (55%) y Peptostreptococcus spp. (42%). La terapia antibiótica empírica más empleada fue el imipenem (44%), seguida de la combinación penicilina más gentamicina más metronidazol (26%). Fallecieron nueve pacientes (26%). Discusión. En nuestro medio, la gangrena de Fournier tuvo una baja incidencia. Su causa más frecuente fue la colorrectal y su diagnóstico fue fundamentalmente clínico. El tratamiento fue multidisciplinario, con soporte hemodinámico, cirugía y terapia antibiótica de amplio espectro. La tasa de mortalidad fue elevada.Introduction: Fournier's gangrene the of necrotizing fasciitis perineum and genital. Colorectal etiology were the most frequent (n=18). The most common clinical presentation were perineum pain (n=21) and erythema (n=19). Main laboratory results were hemoglobin 11.8 gr/dl, hematocrit 32,7%, white blood cells 17.300/mm3 (88,2% neutrophiles), INR 1,3 and urea 73,5 mg/dl. Surgical debridement is the m2ain treatment but complementary treatment such as cistostomy (n=3), colostomy (n=7) and orchiectomy (n=2) were needed. Microbiological cultures revealed Escherichia coli (63%), Bacteroides (55%) and Peptostreptococcus (42%). Imipenem (44%) and combination of penicillin, gentamicin and metronidazole (26%) were the most common empiric antibiotic therapy. Mortality was registered in 9 patients (26%). Conclusions: Fournier's gangrene exhibits low incidence at our institution. Colorectal etiology was the most common. The diagnosis was mainly clinic. Multidisciplinary treatment seems to be the best approach and includes hemodinamic support, surgery and broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy. The mortality rate was high.
