For a long time, intercropping and rotation of leguminous with non-leguminous crops is widely used to reduce the application of nitrogen fertilizer and increase yield in agroecosystems. At present, most researchers considered that this management measure is helpful for reducing fertilizer consumption and increasing its efficiency, as it can improve nutrient supply of legumestonon-legumes, the spatial nutrient utilization efficiency by enhancing soil spatial heterogeneity, and improve soil structure and disease resistance. However, current theories cannot fully explain the positive effect of crop rotation and inter-cropping systems involving legumes. A large amount of hydrogen (H 2 ) can be produced as an obligatory by-product of nitrogenase responsible for nitrogen (N 2 ) fixation in the root nodules of leguminous plants. Despite of substantial amounts of H 2 enriched in the rhizosphere of legumes, only a minor proportion of H 2 is found to leak to soil surface. Increasing evidence showed that most H 2 released in soil is immediately depleted in the surrounding of N 2 -fixing nodules by H 2 -oxidizing bacteria (HOB) thriving in soil. HOB can use H 2 as an electron donor to assimilate and fix CO 2 through redox reactions to synthesize cellular substances and consequently promote plant growth. To date, however, little is known about the biological mechanism and ecological process behind the "hydrogen fertilizer effect". Therefore, we review the H 2 -induced plant growth-promoting effects and its microbiological mechanisms. Our aims were to explore a new way for enhancing agroecosystem production, and to provide scientific basis for future utilization of H 2 in agricultural production practices.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a deadly tumor with high heterogeneity. Aerobic glycolysis is a common indicator of tumor growth and plays a key role in tumorigenesis. Heterogeneity in distinct metabolic pathways can be used to stratify HCC into clinically relevant subgroups, but these have not yet been well-established. In this study, we constructed a model called aerobic glycolysis index (AGI) as a marker of aerobic glycolysis using genomic data of hepatocellular carcinoma from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project. Our results showed that this parameter inferred enhanced aerobic glycolysis activity in tumor tissues. Furthermore, high AGI is associated with poor tumor differentiation and advanced stages and could predict poor prognosis including reduced overall survival and disease-free survival. More importantly, the AGI could accurately predict tumor sensitivity to Sorafenib therapy. Background and Objectives: Recently, PINPOINT, a novel laparoscopic fusion indocyanine green fluorescence imaging (IGFI) system has become available for laparoscopic liver resection. This study aims to characterize fluorescence patterns of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) using the negative counterstaining method in laparoscopic anatomical hepatectomies of ICC., Methods: Eleven consecutive patients, diagnosed with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and underwent laparoscopic liver resection between April 2017 and December 2018, were retrospectively reviewed. A laparoscopic IGFI navigation system was used to characterize fluorescence patterns of ICC with intraoperative liver segment demarcation by means of negative counterstaining., Results: Fusion IGFI of ICC was successfully obtained from all 11 patients from the surgical specimens. The fluorescence patterns of ICC can be categorized into rim-type fluorescence and segmental fluorescence, depending on tumor growth. In eight patients, indocyanine green fluorescence imaging was used to identify the hepatic lobes or segments by negative counterstaining. In six cases, a valid and persistent demarcation was achieved intraoperatively., Conclusion: Laparoscopic IGFI system could identify different types of ICC lesions and may facilitate real-time navigation for laparoscopic anatomic liver resection of ICC., (© 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

The aim of this work was to study the effects of micro ribonucleic acid (miR)-20a on acute kidney injury (AKI) in sepsis rats and its key molecular mechanism. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into healthy rat group (H group, n=3), sham group (S group, n=3), sepsis rat group (D group, n=3), sepsis rat + negative control transfection group (N group, n=3) and sepsis rat + miR-20a inhibitor transfection group (M group, n=3). At 6 h, 12 h and 24 h, serum creatinine (Scr) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were detected, the changes in miR-20a expression in kidney tissues were determined via reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), the expression of autophagy marker protein microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3) was measured via Western blotting, and the inflammatory cell infiltration in kidney tissues was detected using hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. There was no obvious change in each index in S group compared with H group. D group, N group and M group had higher levels of Scr, BUN and LC3 in kidney tissues than S group. The levels of Scr, BUN and LC3 in kidney tissues were lower in M group than those in N group. The cell-cycle inhibitor flavopiridol has been shown to improve recovery from spinal cord injury in animal models. However, the systemic dose of flavopiridol has side-effects and the mechanism of action is not clear. This study aimed to develop a strategy for the local delivery of flavopiridol and investigate its mechanisms of action. Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) were used for the sustained delivery of flavopiridol. The spinal cord was right-hemisectioned and NPs were delivered into the injury site. Transparent spinal cord technology was used for the three-dimensional observation of anterograde tracing. The results showed that flavopiridol NPs had a sustained release of up to 3 days in vitro. Flavopiridol NPs significantly decreased inflammatory factor synthesis by astrocytes, including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, while the IL-10 expression was elevated. In vivo study demonstrated that flavopiridol NPs decreased cell-cycle activation, inflammatory expression and glial scarring, and facilitated neuronal survival and regeneration. The cavitation volume was decreased by ~90%. Administration of flavopiridol NPs also improved the motor recovery of injured animals. These findings demonstrated that local delivery of flavopiridol in PLGA NPs improves recovery from spinal cord injury by inhibiting astrocyte growth and inflammatory factor synthesis., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. To investigate the changes in arterial oxygenation and intrapulmonary shunt during one-lung ventilation (OLV) with intravenous infusion of dexmedetomidine combined with isoflurane inhalation. ASA I-II 60 patients aged 18-70 year, undergoing OLV during elective thoracic surgery were randomly allocated to two groups: (1) isoflurane + saline (group NISO, n = 30) and (2) isoflurane + dexmedetomidine (group DISO, n = 30). After induction, anesthesia was maintained with intravenous infusion of remifentanil 0.1-0.2 μg kg(-1) min(-1) and inhalation isoflurane (1.0-2.0%). In addition, anesthesia was maintained with intravenous infusion of dexmedetomidine 0.7 μg kg(-1) h(-1) in DISO group and saline 0.25 ml kg(-1) h(-1) in NISO group. Bispectral Index values were maintained within 40-60 by changing the concentration of isoflurane in all groups. Arterial blood gas samples and central venous blood gas samples were taken as follows: during two-lung ventilation before OLV and during the first 40 min of OLV. 45 Patients completed the study, with 23 patients in DISO group and 22 patients in NISO group. The two groups were comparable in terms of demographic variables, hemodynamic, PaO2, Qs/QT, end expiration isoflurane and BIS levels during the operation. Compared with patients in the group NISO, there were significant increases with PaO2, significant decrease with Qs/QT, significant decrease with end expiration isoflurane, and significant decrease with HR in the group DISO during the first 40 min of OLV (P < 0.05). Dexmedetomidine infusions decrease the requirement for isoflurane, decrease intrapulmonary shunt, and moderate the change in PaO2 and may be useful in managing OLV.

Objective: To study the protective effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on the cortical microvasculature in rats with focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (CI/RI)., Methods: Eighty SD rats were randomly divided into: normal group (n = 8), sham-operation (sham) group (n = 8), model group (n = 32) and EA group (n = 32). The II/II model was established by occlusion of the middle cerebral artery for 30 min and reperfusion for 1 day (d), 2 d, 4 d and 8 d respectively. EA was applied to "Baihui" (GV20), "Shuigou" (GV 26) and bilateral "Zusanli" (ST 36) areas for 30 min, once daily for 1 d, 2 d, 4 d and 8 d. The right cortical microvascular ultrastructure was examined with transmission electron microscopy and cerebral vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mRNA expression was detected by quantitative real-time PCR., Results: The microvascular ultrastructure of the right cerebral cortex was severely injured in rats of the model group whereas greatly improved in rats of EA group. VEGF mRNA expression of the right cerebral cortex was increased significantly in the model group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) and further upregulated in the EA group (P < 0.01)., Conclusion: EA intervention can alleviate the injury of microvascular ultrastructure of focal ischemic cerebral tissue and upregulate cerebral VEGF mRNA expression, suggesting a role of EA in protecting the ischemic brain tissues by facilitating the angiogenesis of capillary vessels and the function reconstruction of the damaged microvasculature.
