The co-evolution of economic and ecological activities represents one of the fundamental challenges in the realm of sustainable development. This study on the word trends in mainstream newspapers from the UK and China reveals that both early-industrialised countries and latecomers follow three modes of economic and ecological co-evolution. First, both economic and ecological words demonstrate an S-shaped growth trajectory, and the mode underscores the importance of information propagation, whilst also highlighting the crucial role of self-organisation in the accept society. Second, the co-occurrence of these two type words exhibits a Z-shaped relationship: for two-thirds of the observed period, they display synergistic interactions, while the remaining time shows trade-offs. Lastly, the words related to ecological degradation follow M-shaped trajectories in parallel with economic growth, suggesting periodic disruptions and reconstructions in their interrelationships. Our findings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the co-evolutionary mechanisms that govern collective behaviours in human society.

Semi-supervised Anomaly Detection (AD) is a kind of data mining task which aims at learning features from partially-labeled datasets to help detect outliers. In this paper, we classify existing semi-supervised AD methods into two categories: unsupervised-based and supervised-based, and point out that most of them suffer from insufficient exploitation of labeled data and under-exploration of unlabeled data. To tackle these problems, we propose Deep Anomaly Detection and Search (DADS), which applies Reinforcement Learning (RL) to balance exploitation and exploration. During the training process, the agent searches for possible anomalies with hierarchically-structured datasets and uses the searched anomalies to enhance performance, which in essence draws lessons from the idea of ensemble learning. Experimentally, we compare DADS with several state-of-the-art methods in the settings of leveraging labeled known anomalies to detect both other known anomalies and unknown anomalies. Interpretability has become an essential topic for artificial intelligence in some high-risk domains such as healthcare, bank and security. For commonly-used tabular data, traditional methods trained end-to-end machine learning models with numerical and categorical data only, and did not leverage human understandable knowledge such as data descriptions. Yet mining human-level knowledge from tabular data and using it for prediction remain a challenge. Therefore, we propose a concept and argumentation based model (CAM) that includes the following two components: a novel concept mining method to obtain human understandable concepts and their relations from both descriptions of features and the underlying data, and a quantitative argumentation-based method to do knowledge representation and reasoning. As a result of it, CAM provides decisions that are based on human-level knowledge and the reasoning process is intrinsically interpretable. Finally, to visualize the purposed interpretable model, we provide a dialogical explanation that contain dominated reasoning path within CAM. Experimental results on both open source benchmark dataset and real-word business dataset show that (1) CAM is transparent and interpretable, and the knowledge inside the CAM is coherent with human understanding; (2) Our interpretable approach can reach competitive results comparing with other state-of-art models.

Knowledge amalgamation (KA) is a novel deep model reusing task aiming to transfer knowledge from several well-trained teachers to a multi-talented and compact student. Currently, most of these approaches are tailored for convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, there is a tendency that transformers, with a completely different architecture, are starting to challenge the domination of CNNs in many computer vision tasks. Nevertheless, directly applying the previous KA methods to transformers leads to severe performance degradation. In this work, we explore a more effective KA scheme for transformer-based object detection models. Specifically, considering the architecture characteristics of transformers, we propose to dissolve the KA into two aspects: sequence-level amalgamation (SA) and task-level amalgamation (TA). In particular, a hint is generated within the sequence-level amalgamation by concatenating teacher sequences instead of redundantly aggregating them to a fixed-size one as previous KA works. Besides, the student learns heterogeneous detection tasks through soft targets with efficiency in the task-level amalgamation. Extensive experiments on PASCAL VOC and COCO have unfolded that the sequence-level amalgamation significantly boosts the performance of students, while the previous methods impair the students. Moreover, the transformer-based students excel in learning amalgamated knowledge, as they have mastered heterogeneous detection tasks rapidly and achieved superior or at least comparable performance to those of the teachers in their specializations., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication. Semantic segmentation models trained on public datasets have achieved great success in recent years. However, these models didn't consider the personalization issue of segmentation though it is important in practice. In this paper, we address the problem of personalized image segmentation. The objective is to generate more accurate segmentation results on unlabeled personalized images by investigating the data's personalized traits. To open up future research in this area, we collect a large dataset containing various users' personalized images called PIS (Personalized Image Semantic Segmentation). We also survey some recent researches related to this problem and report their performance on our dataset. Furthermore, by observing the correlation among a user's personalized images, we propose a baseline method that incorporates the inter-image context when segmenting certain images. The dynamics of city's spatial structures are determined by the coupling of functional components (such as restaurants and shops) and human beings within the city. Yet, there still lacks mechanism models to quantify the spatial distribution of functional components. Here, we establish a gradient model to simulate the density curves of multiple types of components based on the equilibria of gravitational and repulsive forces along the urban-rural gradient. The forces from city center to components are determined by both the city's attributes (land rent, population and people's environmental preferences) and the components attributes (supply capacity, product transportability and environmental impacts). The simulation for the distribution curves of 22 types of components on the urban-rural gradient are a good fit for the real-world data in cities. Based on the 4 typical types of components, the model reveals a bottom-up self-organizing mechanism that is, the patterns in city development are determined by the economic, ecological, and social attributes of both cities and components. Based on the mechanism, we predict the distribution curves of many types of components along with the development of cities. Exploring the intrinsic interconnections between the knowledge encoded in PRe-trained Deep Neural Networks (PR-DNNs) of heterogeneous tasks sheds light on their mutual transferability, and consequently enables knowledge transfer from one task to another so as to reduce the training effort of the latter. In this paper, we propose the DEeP Attribution gRAph (DEPARA) to investigate the transferability of knowledge learned from PR-DNNs. In DEPARA, nodes correspond to the inputs and are represented by their vectorized attribution maps with regards to the outputs of the PR-DNN. Edges denote the relatedness between inputs and are measured by the similarity of their features extracted from the PR-DNN. The knowledge transferability of two PR-DNNs is measured by the similarity of their corresponding DEPARAs. We apply DEPARA to two important yet under-studied problems in transfer learning: pre-trained model selection and layer selection. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method in solving both these problems. Prevailing hypotheses recognize cities as 'super-organisms' which both provides organizing principles for cities and fills the scalar gap in the hierarchical living system between ecosystems and the entire planet. However, most analogies between the traits of organisms and cities are inappropriate making the super-organism model impractical as a means to acquire new knowledge. Using a cluster analysis of 15 traits of cities and other living systems, we found that modern cities are more similar to eukaryotic cells than to multicellular organisms. Enclosed industrial systems, such as factories and greenhouses, dominate modern cities and are analogous to organelles as hotspots that provide high-flux goods and services. Therefore, we propose a 'super-cell city model' as more appropriate than the super-organism model. In addition to the theoretical significance, our model also recognizes enclosed industrial systems as functional components that improve the vitality and sustainability of cities.

Few-shot image classification requires the classifier to robustly cope with unseen classes even if there are only a few samples for each class. Recent advances benefit from the meta-learning process where episodic tasks are formed to train a model that can adapt to class change. However, these task sare independent to each other and existing works mainly rely on limited samples of individual support set in a single meta task. This strategy leads to severe meta shift issues across multiple tasks, meaning the learned prototypes or class descriptors are not stable as each task only involves their own support set. To avoid this problem, we propose a concise Semantic RegularizationNetwork to learn a common semantic space under the framework of meta-learning. In this space, all class descriptors can be regularized by the learned semantic basis, which can effectively solve the meta shift problem. The key is to train a class encoder and decoder structure that can encode the sample embedding features into the semantic domain with trained semantic basis, and generate a more stable and general class descriptor from the decoder. We evaluate our work by extensive comparisons with previous methods on three benchmark datasets (MiniImageNet, TieredImageNet, and CUB). The results show that the semantic regularization module improves performance by 4%-7% over the baseline method, and achieves competitive results over the current state-of-the-art models.

Few-shot image classification aims to classify unseen classes with limited labelled samples. Recent works benefit from the meta-learning process with episodic tasks and can fast adapt to class from training to testing. Due to the limited number of samples for each task, the initial embedding network for meta-learning becomes an essential component and can largely affect the performance in practice. To this end, most of the existing methods highly rely on the efficient embedding network. Due to the limited labelled data, the scale of embedding network is constrained under a supervised learning(SL) manner which becomes a bottleneck of the few-shot learning methods. In this paper, we proposed to train a more generalized embedding network with self-supervised learning (SSL) which can provide robust representation for downstream tasks by learning from the data itself. We evaluate our work by extensive comparisons with previous baseline methods on two few-shot classification datasets ({\em i.e.,} MiniImageNet and CUB) and achieve better performance over baselines. Tests on four datasets in cross-domain few-shot learning classification show that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art results and further prove the robustness of the proposed model.
