Abstract

Carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites, prized for their exceptional properties, often encounter surface quality issues during slotting due to their inherent heterogeneity. This paper tackles CFRP slotting challenges by employing multi-tooth mills in experiments with various fibre orientations and tool feed rates. In-plane scratching tests are performed under linearly varying loads; then, slotting experiments are conducted at different parameters. The scratching test results indicate that the fibre orientation and cutting angles have significant influences on forces and fracture process. The slotting experiments demonstrate that cutting forces and surface roughness Sa of the bottom slotting surface are notably affected by the fibre orientation, with disparities between up-milling and down-milling sides. Reorganising Sa data by local fibre cutting angle θ highlights consistent Sa variations between up-milling and down-milling sides for 0° ≤ θ ≤ 90°, with lower Sa on the up-milling side. However, for 90° < θ ≤ 150°, Sa variations diverge, with lower Sa on the down-milling side. Unexpectedly, Sa on the down-milling side decreases with increasing θ in this range. Additionally, the tool feed rate exerts a more pronounced influence on Sa on the up-milling side. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Jute fibres were processed with different types of structures, and these fibres were applied to prepare friction composites through compression moulding. The Structured Jute fibres reinforced Friction composites (SJF) were heat-treated using a heat treatment tank, and the mechanical and tribological properties of the SJF were investigated with a friction-wear tester. The surface morphologies of friction composites were observed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The experimental results showed that structured jute fibres could improve impact strength of SJF, but they had no obvious effect on their density and hardness. The friction-wear tests revealed the specimens to present a remarkable fade phenomenon when the test temperature was above 200°C. The presence of the structured jute fibres could decrease the wear rates (V) of SJF when the temperatures were in the range of 250 to 350°C, especially for specimens containing beaded jute fibres and specimens containing dumbbell-shaped jute fibres. They also increased the friction stability and decreased the wear rates of the friction composites. For all specimens, wear rates of the SJF increased with the test temperature. The results of this study could be useful in many applications, such as automobile brake system, clutches and friction gearings.

Abstract

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a multicarrier modulation technique that is widely used in wireless broadband communication systems. The spectral e ciency of OFDM is very high since the subcarriers are spaced as closely as possible while maintaining orthogonality. However, one of the major problems with OFDM that can cause performance degradation is carrier frequency o set (CFO) which impairs the orthogonality among OFDM subcarriers, as a consequence, results in inter-subcarrier interference. In this thesis, an iterative algorithm for joint CFO estimation and data detection in OFDM systems over frequency selective channels is proposed. The proposed algorithm is performing both CFO estimation and data detection in the frequency domain based on the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. The proposed algorithm can achieve the same bit-error-rate (BER) performance as that of its time-domain counterpart with much lower complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can converge after three iterations and an estimate of CFO can be obtained with high accuracy.
