Search

Polymorphic phases and collective phenomena—such as charge density waves (CDWs)—in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) dictate the physical and electronic properties of the material. Most TMDs naturally occur in a single given phase, but the fine-tuning of growth conditions via methods such as molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) allows to unlock otherwise inaccessible polymorphic structures. Exploring and understanding the morphological and electronic properties of new phases of TMDs is an essential step to enable their exploitation in technological applications. Here, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is used to map MBE-grown monolayer (ML) TaTe2. This work reports the first observation of the 1H polymorphic phase, coexisting with the 1T, and demonstrates that their relative coverage can be controlled by adjusting synthesis parameters. Several superperiodic structures, compatible with CDWs, are observed to coexist on the 1T phase. Finally, this work provides theoretical insight on the delicate balance between Te…Te and Ta–Ta interactions that dictates the stability of the different phases. The findings demonstrate that TaTe2 is an ideal platform to investigate competing interactions, and indicate that accurate tuning of growth conditions is key to accessing metastable states in TMDs

Engineering the growth of the different phases of a MoTe2 single-layer in a decoupling substrate. The possibility to tune and combine different phases is a promising way to exploit the potential of MoTe2 since the phase determines its properties.

We report on the properties of the thin films of the short peptide L-dialanine grown on Cu(100) surfaces and compare them to those of L-alanine by using surface techniques like XPS, IRRAS and STM. The first dialanine monolayer, in contact with the metallic substrate, is found to consist of whole neutral molecules in the non-zwitterionic state forming a

We assess the crucial role of tetrapyrrole flexibility in the CO ligation to distinct Ru‐porphyrins supported on an atomistically well‐defined Ag(111) substrate. Our systematic real‐space visualisation and manipulation experiments with scanning tunnelling microscopy directly probe the ligation, while bond‐resolving atomic force microscopy and X‐ray standing‐wave measurements characterise the geometry, X‐ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy the electronic structure, and temperature‐programmed desorption the binding strength. Density‐functional‐theory calculations provide additional insight into the functional interface. We unambiguously demonstrate that the substituents regulate the interfacial conformational adaptability, either promoting or obstructing the uptake of axial CO adducts., The CO ligation to two different ruthenium porphyrins on the Ag(111) surface under vacuum was investigated experimentally and theoretically. The electronic and geometric changes upon ligation as well as the energetics of the process were elucidated. The surface adaptability of the porphyrin macrocycle conformation proves crucial for CO binding.

We have determined the electron–phonon interaction in type II Dirac semimetallic 1T-PdTe2 by means of helium atom scattering. While 1T-PdTe2 is isostructural with 1T-PtTe2, only the former is superconductor. The difference can be traced to the substantially larger value of the electron–phonon coupling in 1T-PdTe2, λ = 0.58, obtained from the Debye-Waller attenuation of the He specular peak. With this value and the surface Debye temperature, ΘD = 106.2 K, we have figured out the superconducting critical temperature, Tc = 1.83 K given by the BCS theory, which is in good agreement with Tc = (1.95 ± 0.03) K obtained with low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. The value of the effective mass related to ΘD indicates that the large electron–phonon coupling in 1T-PdTe2 is due to coupling, not only with the zone-center optical mode O2 at 9.2 meV, as proposed in a recent theoretical study, but also with the zone-boundary acoustic mode LA. Our results suggest that the topological states of a Dirac cone play a negligible role on the onset of superconductivity.

In this work we fabricate and characterize a functionalized superconducting (SC) Nb tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). The tip is functionalized with a Tetracyanoquinodimethane molecule (TCNQ) that accepts charge from the tip and develops a magnetic moment. As a consequence, in scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS), sharp, bias symmetric sub-gap states identified as Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states appear against the featureless density of states of a metallic graphene on Ir(111) sample. Although the coupling regime of the magnetic impurity with the SC tip depends on the initial absorption configuration of the molecule, the interaction strength between the SC tip and the charged TCNQ molecule can be reversibly controlled by tuning the tip-sample distance. The controlled transition from one coupling regime to the other allows us to verify the relation between the energy scales of the two competing many-body effects for the functionalized tip. Quenching the SC state of the Nb tip with a magnetic field switches abruptly from a tip dominated by the YSR bound states to a Kondo tip.

We report the on-surface synthesis of a nonmetal porphyrin, namely, silicon tetraphenylporphyrin (Si-TPP), by the deposition of atomic silicon onto a free-base TPP layer on a Ag(100) surface under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions. Scanning tunneling microscopy provides insights into the self-assembly of the TPP molecules before and after Si insertion. Silicon coordinates with all four nitrogen atoms of the TPP macrocycle and interacts with a silver atom of the substrate as confirmed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and complementary density functional theory calculations. The Si-TPP complex presents a saddle-shaped conformation that is stable under STM manipulation. Our study shows how protocols established for the on-surface metalation of tetrapyrroles can be adopted to achieve nonmetal porphyrins. Complementary experiments yielding Si-TPP and Ge-TPP on Ag(111) highlight the applicability to different main group elements and supports. The success of our nonmetal porphyrin synthesis procedure is further corroborated by a temperature-programmed desorption experiment, revealing the desorption of Ge-TPP. This extension of interfacial complex formation beyond metal elements opens promising prospects for new tetrapyrrole architectures with distinct properties and functionalities.

Dirac semimetals (DSM) host linear bulk bands and topologically protected surface states, giving rise to exotic and robust properties. Platinum ditelluride (PtTe2) belongs to this interesting group of topological materials. Here, we employ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in combination with first-principles calculations to visualize and identify the native defects at the surface of a freshly cleaved PtTe2 crystal. Around these defects, short-wavelength electron density oscillations are observed. Fourier transform analysis of the energy-dependent quasiparticle interference patterns is in good agreement with our calculated joint density of states, demonstrating the singular properties of the surface of this type-II DSM. Our results evidence the power of STM in understanding the surface of topological materials.

International audience; The adsorption and monolayer self-assembly of functional metal–organic blocks on solid surfaces are critical for the physico-chemical properties of these low-dimensional materials. Although modern microscopy tools are very sensitive to the lateral arrangement of such blocks, they are still unable to offer directly the complete structural analysis especially for non-planar molecules containing different atoms. Here, we apply a combinatorial approach for the characterization of such interfaces, which enables unexpected insights. An archetypal metalloporphyrin on a catalytically active surface as a function of its molecular coverage and substituent arrangement is characterized by low-energy electron diffraction, scanning probe microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, normal-incidence X-ray standing waves, and density functional theory. We look into Ru tetraphenyl porphyrin (Ru-TPP) on Ag(111), which is also converted into its planarised derivates via surface-assisted cyclodehydrogenation reactions. Depending on the arrangement of the phenyl substituents, the Ru atoms have distinct electronic structures and the porphyrin macrocycles adapt differently to the surface: saddle shape (pristine Ru-TPP) or bowl shape (planarised Ru-TPP derivates). In all cases, the Ru atom resides close to the surface (2.59/2.45 Å), preferably located at hollow sites and in the interface between the plane of the porphyrin macrocycle and the Ag surface. For the more flexible pristine Ru-TPP, we identify an additional self-assembled structure, allowing the molecular density of the self-assembled monolayer to be tuned within ∼20%. This precise analysis is central to harnessing the potential of metalloporphyrin/metal interfaces in functional systems.

The use of molecular materials in solar cells and nano-electronics demands a fundamental understanding and control of their electronic properties. Particularly relevant is the molecular response to the environment, that is, the interaction with the support and adjacent molecules, as well as the influence of electrostatic gating. Here, the control of molecular level alignment and charge states of fluorinated cobalt phthalocyanines (F16CoPc) on atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) sheets on Cu(111) is reported using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS), as well as atomic force microscopy (AFM) and complementary density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Three parameters that govern the electronic level alignment of F16CoPc orbitals are investigated: i) template-induced gating by the work function variation of the h-BN/Cu(111) substrate, ii) gating by the STM tip, and iii) screening by neighboring molecules. The interplay of these parameters influences the charge distribution in the studied molecular arrangements and thus provides the possibility to tune their physicochemical behavior, for instance, the response toward electronic or optical excitation, charge transport, or binding of axial adducts.

The vast potential of organic materials for electronic, optoelectronic and spintronic devices entails substantial interest in the fabrication of π-conjugated systems with tailored functionality directly at insulating interfaces. On-surface fabrication of such materials on non-metal surfaces remains to be demonstrated with high yield and selectivity. Here we present the synthesis of polyaromatic chains on metallic substrates, insulating layers, and in the solid state. Scanning probe microscopy shows the formation of azaullazine repeating units on Au(111), Ag(111), and h-BN/Cu(111), stemming from intermolecular homo-coupling via cycloaddition reactions of CN-substituted polycyclic aromatic azomethine ylide (PAMY) intermediates followed by subsequent dehydrogenation. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry demonstrates that the reaction also takes place in the solid state in the absence of any catalyst. Surface-assisted covalent linking of precursor molecules enables the fabrication of low-dimensional nanostructures, which include graphene nanoribbons. One approach to building functional multicomponent systems involves the lateral anchoring of organic heteromolecules to graphene. Here we demonstrate the dehydrogenative coupling of single porphines to graphene edges on the same metal substrate as used for graphene synthesis. The covalent linkages are visualized by scanning probe techniques with submolecular resolution, which directly reveals bonding motifs and electronic features. Distinct configurations are identified that can be steered towards entities predominantly fused to graphene edges through two pyrrole rings by thermal annealing. Furthermore, we succeeded in the concomitant metallation of the macrocycle with substrate atoms and the axial ligation of adducts. Such processes combined with graphene-nanostructure synthesis has the potential to create complex materials systems with tunable functionalities.

Intercalation of molecules into layered materials is actively researched in materials science, chemistry, and nanotechnology, holding promise for the synthesis of van der Waals heterostructures and encapsulated nanoreactors. However, the intercalation of organic molecules that exhibit physical or chemical functionality remains a key challenge to date. In this work, we present the synthesis of heterostructures consisting of porphines sandwiched between a Cu(111) substrate and an insulating hexagonal boron nitride ( h-BN) monolayer. We investigated the energetics of the intercalation, as well as the influence of the capping h-BN layer on the behavior of the intercalated molecules using scanning probe microscopy and density functional theory calculations. While the self-assembly of the molecules is altered upon intercalation, we show that the intrinsic functionalities, such as switching between different porphine tautomers, are preserved. Such insulator/molecule/metal structures provide opportunities to protect organic materials from deleterious effects of atmospheric environment, can be used to control chemical reactions through spatial confinement, and give access to layered materials based on the ample availability of synthesis protocols provided by organic chemistry.

Nanographenes, namely polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with nanoscale dimensions (>1 nm), are atomically precise cutouts from graphene. They represent prime models to enhance the scope of chemical and physical properties of graphene through structural modulation and functionalization. Defined nitrogen doping in nanographenes is particularly attractive due to its potential for increasing the number of π-electrons, with the possibility of introducing localized antiaromatic ring elements. Herein we present azomethine ylide homocoupling as a strategy to afford internally nitrogen-doped, non-planar PAH in solution and planar nanographene on surfaces, with central pyrazine rings. Localized antiaromaticity of the central ring is indicated by optical absorption spectroscopy in conjunction with theoretical calculations. Our strategy opens up methods for chemically tailoring graphene and nanographenes, modified by antiaromatic dopants., Polyaromatic hydrocarbons can be precisely manipulated to yield ever more complex and discrete graphene analogs, such as nanographenes. Here, the authors use azomethine ylide homocoupling to insert an antiaromatic pyrazine ring into the core of a nanographene, and characterize the molecule’s unique electronic character.

The tetrapyrrole macrocycle of porphine is the common core of all porphyrin molecules, an interesting class of π-conjugated molecules with relevance in natural and artificial systems. The functionality of porphines on a solid surface can be tailored by the central metal atom and its interaction with the substrate. In this study, we present a local adsorption geometry determination for cobalt porphine on Cu(111) by means of complementary scanning tunneling microscopy, high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray standing wave measurements, and density functional theory calculations. Specifically, the Co center was determined to be at an adsorption height of 2.25 ± 0.04 A occupying a bridge site. The macrocycle adopts a moderate asymmetric saddle-shape conformation, with the two pyrrole groups that are aligned perpendicular to the densely packed direction of the Cu(111) surface tilted away from the surface plane.

International audience; Atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) layers on metallic supports represent a promising platform for the selective adsorption of atoms, clusters, and molecular nanostructures. Specifically, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies revealed an electronic corrugation of h-BN/Cu(111), guiding the self-assembly of molecules and their energy level alignment. A detailed characterization of the h-BN/Cu(111) interface including the spacing between the h-BN sheet and its support—elusive to STM measurements—is crucial to rationalize the interfacial interactions within these systems. To this end, we employ complementary techniques including high-resolution noncontact atomic force microscopy, STM, low-energy electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the X-ray standing wave method, and density functional theory. Our multimethod study yields a comprehensive, quantitative structure determination including the adsorption height and the corrugation of the sp2 bonded h-BN layer on Cu(111). Based on the atomic contrast in atomic force microscopy measurements, we derive a measurable–hitherto unrecognized–geometric corrugation of the h-BN monolayer. This experimental approach allows us to spatially resolve minute height variations in low-dimensional nanostructures, thus providing a benchmark for theoretical modeling. Regarding potential applications, e.g., as a template or catalytically active support, the recognition of h-BN on Cu(111) as a weakly bonded and moderately corrugated overlayer is highly relevant.

The electronic band structure of a material can acquire interesting topological properties in the presence of a magnetic field or as a result of the spin-orbit coupling. We study graphene on Ir, with Pb monolayer islands intercalated between the graphene sheet and the Ir surface. Although the graphene layer is structurally unaffected by the presence of the Pb islands, its electronic properties change markedly, with regularly spaced resonances appearing. We interpret these resonances as the effect of a strong and spatially modulated spin-orbit coupling, induced in graphene by the Pb monolayer. By pulsing the tunneling voltage between the Tungsten (W) tip of a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) and a graphene-covered metal surface, a superconducting (SC) nanostructure is formed at the apex of the STM tip. We have characterized the SC properties of the resulting nanotip as a function of temperature and magnetic field, obtaining a transition temperature of 3.3 K and a critical field well above 3 T. The SC nanotip is robust and stable and achieves atomic resolution. A non-SC tip can be easily recovered by controlled voltage pulsing on a clean metal surface. The present result should be taken into account when studying zero-bias features like Kondo resonances, zero-bias-conductance peaks, or superconductivity on graphene-based systems by means of STM using tungsten tips.

Organic covalent functionalization of graphene with long-range periodicity is highly desirable-it is anticipated to provide control over its electronic, optical, or magnetic properties-and remarkably challenging. In this work we describe a method for the covalent modification of graphene with strict spatial periodicity at the nanometer scale. The periodic landscape is provided by a single monolayer of graphene grown on Ru(0001) that presents a moiré pattern due to the mismatch between the carbon and ruthenium hexagonal lattices. The moiré contains periodically arranged areas where the graphene-ruthenium interaction is enhanced and shows higher chemical reactivity. This phenomenon is demonstrated by the attachment of cyanomethyl radicals (CH2CN(•)) produced by homolytic breaking of acetonitrile (CH3CN), which is shown to present a nearly complete selectivity (98%) binding covalently to graphene on specific atomic sites. This method can be extended to other organic nitriles, paving the way for the attachment of functional molecules.

The structure of self-assembled monolayers of 7,7',8,8'-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ) adsorbed on Cu(111) has been studied using a combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We show that the polymorphism of the self-assembled molecular layer can be controlled by tuning of the experimental conditions under which the deposition is carried out. When the Cu(111) substrate is held above room temperature (T-Cu(111) = 350 K) during deposition, a structure is formed in which the two molecules in the unit cell are oriented one perpendicular to the other. Conversely, when the substrate is held at room temperature during deposition and slightly annealed afterwards, a more complex structure with five molecules per unit cell is formed. DFT calculations complement the experimental results by revealing that the building blocks of the two superstructures are two mutually orthogonal adsorption configurations of the molecule. The relative stability between the two observed polymorphs is reproduced by models of the two superstructures based on these two adsorption configurations.

We report the formation of a metal-organic network on a BN/Cu(111) template by codeposition of carbonitrile-functionalized porphyrin derivatives (2H-TPCN) with Co atoms in an ultrahigh vacuum environment. The resulting metallo-supramolecular structure explored by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy features a distinct 4-fold coordination motif. Furthermore, we demonstrate an in situ metalation of the tetrapyrrole macrocycles with deposited Co atoms yielding Co-TPCN directly on the BN sheet. Our results provide perspectives for the formation of coordination networks on BN and related systems featuring structural, electronic, and magnetic properties unachievable on metallic supports.

Achieving control over the self-organization of functional molecules on graphene is critical for the development of graphene technology in organic electronic and spintronic. Here, by using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), we show that the electron acceptor molecule 7,7′,8,8′-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ) and its fluorinated derivative 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7′,8,8′-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (F4-TCNQ), co-deposited on the surface of epitaxial graphene on Ru(0001), transform spontaneously into their corresponding magnetic anions and self-organize in two remarkably different structures. TCNQ forms densely packed linear magnetic arrays, while F4-TCNQ molecules remain as isolated non interacting magnets. With the help of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we trace back the origin of this behavior in the competition between the intermolecular repulsion experienced by the individual charged anions, which tends to separate the molecules, and the delocalization of the electrons transferred from the surface to the molecules, which promotes the formation of molecular oligomers. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to control the spatial arrangement of organic magnetic anions co-adsorbed on a surface by means of chemical substitution, paving the way for the design of two-dimensional fully organic magnetic structures on graphene and on other surfaces.

A site-dependent charge transfer to 7,7′,8,8′-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) adsorbed on a single layer of periodically rippled graphene grown epitaxially on Ru(0001), identified by X-ray photoemission techniques, can be spatially resolved using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, which can also detect the formation of magnetic moments. The molecules adsorbed on the lower part of the ripples are charged with electrons donated from the doped graphene overlayer and develop a magnetic moment, while those at the upper part of the ripples are neutral. On the other hand, TCNQ adsorbed on graphene on Ir(111) shows negligible charge transfer and no magnetic moment. These observations explain the spatially dependent long-range magnetic order observed recently for TCNQ on gr/Ru(0001).

Electron acceptor molecules adsorbed on nanostructured graphene grown on Ru(0001) were investigated by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (LT-STM/STS). Our experiments reveal a considerable charge transfer from the substrate to the single molecules leading to the partial occupation of the LUMO of the neutral molecules. The nanostructured graphene modulates the hybridization between the transferred unpaired electron and the ruthenium conduction electrons leading to the appearance of a Kondo effect. Spatially resolved LT-STS allows the high resolution mapping of the spin distribution of the charge transferred and a characteristic inelastic Kondo features associated to specific vibrational modes.

We report here on the molecular self-assembly of 7, 7', 8, 8' tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) (schematic representation of the molecule on figure 1(b)) on a single-crystal Cu(111) surface, followed by deposition of Fe and Mn, and on the formation of an ordered metal–organic coordination network of Fe (or Mn)–TCNQ units, which contains magnetic ions separated by 0.9 nm.

Despite its impressive mechanical and electronic properties, graphene’s magnetic characteristics are poor. However, adsorbed organic molecules can give the material magnetic functionality, and the magnetic moment remains when the molecules combine to form dimers or even a continuous monolayer.

D. Stradi et al., Monolayer graphene grown on Ru(0001) surfaces forms a superstructure with periodic modulations in its geometry and electronic structure. The large dimension and inhomogeneous features of this superstructure make its description and subsequent analysis a challenge for theoretical modeling based on density functional theory. In this work, we compare two different approaches to describe the same physical properties of this surface, focusing on the geometry and the electronic states confined at the surface. In the more complex approach, the actual moiré structure is taken into account by means of large unit cells, whereas in the simplest one, the graphene moiré is completely neglected by representing the system as a stretched graphene layer that adapts pseudomorphically to Ru(0001). As shown in previous work, the more complex model provides an accurate description of the existing experimental observations. More interestingly, we show that the simplified stretched models, which are computationally inexpensive, reproduce qualitatively the main features of the surface electronic structure. An inelastic feature, related to the excitation of a vibrational breathing mode of the graphene lattice, was found at 360 meV. The change in the differential electrical conductance produced by this inelastic feature, which is associated with the electron-phonon interaction strength, varies spatially from one position to other of the graphene supercell. An in situ tip preparation procedure compatible with ultra-low temperature and high magnetic field scanning tunneling microscopes is presented. This procedure does not require additional preparation techniques such as thermal annealing or ion milling. It relies on the local electric-field-induced deposition of material from the tip onto the studied surface. Subsequently, repeated indentations are performed onto the sputtered cluster to mechanically anneal the tip apex and thus to ensure the stability of the tip. The efficiency of this method is confirmed by comparing the topography and spectroscopy data acquired with either unprepared or in situ prepared tips on epitaxial graphene grown on Ru (0001). We demonstrate that the use of in situ prepared tips increases the stability of the scanning tunneling images and the reproducibility of the spectroscopic measurements., Comment: 9 Pages, 4 figures (including supp. material)

The interpretation of scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements of epitaxial graphene on lattice-mismatched substrates is a challenging problem, because of the spatial modulation in the electronic structure imposed by the formation of a moiré pattern. Here we describe the electronic structure of graphene adsorbed on Ru(0001) by means of density functional theory calculations that include van der Waals interactions and are performed on a large 11×11 unit cell to account for the observed moiré patterns. Our results show the existence of localized electronic states in the high and low areas of the moiré at energies close to and well above the Fermi level, respectively. Graphene grown on Ir(111) electronically decouples adsorbed molecules from the metallic substrate and allows the study of their self-organization on surfaces. We study two electron acceptor molecules from the same family. The intermolecular interaction, attractive for TCNQ and repulsive for F 4-TCNQ, dictates the molecular ordering. © 2010 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

We report here on a method of fabricating and characterizing highly perfect, periodically rippled graphene monolayers and islands, epitaxially grown on single crystal metallic substrates under controlled ultra-high vacuum conditions. The periodicity of the ripples is dictated by the difference in lattice parameters of graphene and substrate, and, thus, it is adjustable. We characterize its perfection at the atomic scale by means of STM and determine its electronic structure in the real space by local tunnelling spectroscopy. There are periodic variations in the geometric and electronic structure of the graphene monolayer. We observe inhomogeneities in the charge distribution, i.e. a larger occupied density of states at the higher parts of the ripples. Periodically rippled graphene might represent the physical realization of an ordered array of coupled graphene quantum dots. The data show, however, that for rippled graphene on Ru(0 0 0 1) both the low and the high parts of the ripples are metallic. Graphene epitaxially grown on Ru(0001) displays a remarkably ordered pattern of hills and valleys in Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) images. To which extent the observed "ripples" are structural or electronic in origin have been much disputed recently. A combination of ultrahigh resolution STM images and Helium Atom diffraction data shows that i) the graphene lattice is rotated with respect to the lattice of Ru and ii) the structural corrugation as determined from He diffraction is substantially smaller (0.015 nm) than predicted (0.15 nm) or reported from X-Ray Diffraction or Low Energy Electron Diffraction. The electronic corrugation, on the contrary, is strong enough to invert the contrast between hills and valleys above +2.6 V as new, spatially localized electronic states enter the energy window of the STM. Silver opens up interesting perspectives in the fabrication of complex systems based on heteroepitaxial layers after the growth of a silicene layer on its (111) face has been proposed. In this work we explore different synthesis methods of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and graphene sheets on silver. The resulting layers have been examined by high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy. A comparison of the interfacial electronic band structure upon growth of the distinct two-dimensional (2D) layers has been performed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy and complementary first-principle calculations. We demonstrate that the adsorption of the 2D layers has an effect on the binding energy of the Shockley state and the surface potential by lowering the local work function. These effects are larger in the case of graphene where the surface state of Ag(111) is depopulated due to charge transfer to the graphene. Furthermore, we show that the electronic properties of the h-BN/silver system can be tuned by employing different thicknesses of silver ranging from a few monolayers on Cu(111) to the single crystal Ag substrate.
