The biogeochemical and physical processes occurring in the oceans are pivotal in controlling the atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2atm) concentration. In particular, the biological pump uptakes CO2atm through photosynthesis, whereas the carbonate pump produces CO2 during CaCO3 production. On the other hand, the accumulation of microbiota-derived carbonates into the deep-sea sediments favors the CO2 surplus buffering during high carbonate dissolution episodes. To unravel the role of calcifying marine microbiota on CO2atm regulation, we studied the microfossil contents from two sectors of the Western Pacific Ocean with potential different behaviors towards CO2 buffering: the Ocean Drilling Program Site 1209 (NW Pacific) and the IMAGES Core MD 97-2114 (SW Pacific). The selected time interval covers the last 300 kyr – i.e. the most recent glacial-interglacial cycles, with particular attention to the Last Interglacial (LIG; 129-116 kyr) which is a good modern-analogue within the geological records. Analyses of calcareous nannofossil assemblages provided data on coccolith carbonate production and fluxes, primary productivity, and carbonate dissolution, which are essential to investigate the carbonate and biological pumps’ efficiency on CO2atm uptake.Our data confirm that the calcareous nannofossils contributed significantly to the ocean carbon cycle through both the biological and carbonate pumps, constituting up to 50-70% of the carbonate stocked into the sediments of the studied sites. In both the oceanic sectors, we recorded higher coccolith carbonate fluxes mostly during deglaciations, and thus coccolithophores’ production acted as a negative feedback on CO2atm uptake contributing to the CO2atm abrupt increase which characterizes the deglacial-interglacial transitions of the last 800 kyr. Instead, higher carbonate dissolution episodes generating positive feedback on CO2atm occurred during glacial inceptions and interglacials at Site 1209, and during glacial phases at Core MD 97-2114 due to the stronger intensity of the highly corrosive Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC). Therefore, changes in coccolithophore production influenced the saturation state of deep waters in a time ranging from 10 to 100 kyr at both sites. The comparison between the two oceanic areas allows identifying significant differences in the processes involved in the CO2 buffering. In the NW Pacific site the biological pump is probably more efficient owing to the high productivity of coccolithophorids together with the presence of diatom blooms during glacial phases. At the southern site the biological pump consists only of coccolithophorids, but the coccolith carbonate fluxes are almost doubled compared to the northern site testifying a major efficiency of the carbonate pump on CO2 production. On the other hand, the higher amount of CaCO3 stocked into the southern sediments and the higher efficiency of the physical pump related to the DWBC strongly contributed to the CO2atm uptake during glacials. Thus, these two oceanic sectors seem to be decoupled and, therefore, it could be possible that their combined effect in a long-term trend can result in a balance.

Improving the biostratigraphy across the Eocene–Oligocene is fundamental to better constrain the timing and causes of an important global climate change of the Cenozoic, the Eocene–Oligocene Transition (EOT; 34–33.5 Ma). Across the EOT, only few nannofossil bioevents are considered globally synchronous and reliable. One of these is the first common occurrence (Bc) of the species Reticulofenestra daviesii that has been proven to be useful for biostratigraphical correlations in the Southern Ocean, but the potential of R. daviesii as a biostratigraphical marker at mid- and low latitudes has not been explored yet in detail. We investigate three deep-sea drill sites located across a N-S transect at mid-low latitudes of the Atlantic Ocean spanning from 34.4 to 33 Ma, reviewing the temporal and geographical distribution together with the intraspecific variability of R. daviesii. Our data quantify the occurrence of R. daviesii in (sub)tropical regions of the Atlantic Ocean, although with lower abundances (∼ 4–12%) compared to Southern Ocean assemblages (40–95%). This suggests that R. daviesii was a cosmopolitan species capable to adapt to a wider range of sea surface temperatures and environmental conditions than previously thought. However, the temporal distributions of R. daviesii at the three studied sites are not comparable to the trends recorded in the Southern Ocean. Its Bc is clearly identifiable only at the equatorial site, occurring ∼ 500,000 years before the age estimated in the Southern Ocean (33.705 Ma). Thus, we suggest caution when using the Bc of R. daviesii as a reliable biostratigraphical event at mid- and low latitudes. In addition, our biometrical data reveal that up to 38% of R. daviesii coccoliths is > 8–10 μm in major axis size, thus bigger than the medium size range (5–8 μm) originally described. Refining the size range of R. daviesii is important for estimating its cell volume versus surface area and coccolith carbonate mass.

A rock magnetic study was conducted on upper Pleistocene marine sediments from International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 350 Site U1437 in order to highlight the paleoenvironmental changes in the NW Pacific Ocean influenced by the East Asian monsoon regime. Remanent magnetization analyses, hysteresis properties, first-order reversal curves and low temperature magnetic measurements were carried out, along with electron microscope observations. The results indicate that coarse-grained (titano)-magnetite is the dominant magnetic phase in the magnetic mineral assemblage. Time-series analysis supports that this assemblage is modulated by global climate changes over the last 1 Myr. During the interglacial stages, magnetic minerals are more abundant; and are dominated by coarse-grained (titano)-magnetite of both terrigenous (likely from mainland China) and volcanic (Izu arc front, Japan) origin. During the glacial stages, the magnetic mineral content is lower, probably reflecting partial dissolution of (Ti)-magnetite, and the magnetic assemblage is composed of terrigenous coarse-grained (titano)-magnetite and of higher coercivity, presumably finer eolian particles (likely hematite) as a result of the enhancement of the winter monsoon in continental Asia. The magnetic mineral assemblage reflects a superimposition of volcanic and global climate signals. Bulk organic-geochemical analyses for total and organic carbon as well as nitrogen and sulfur contents confirm a climatic signature in the composition of the sediments with more oxygenated water masses being present during glacial periods. Additional X-ray fluorescence measurements on bulk samples indicate various origins of the sediment particles with both proximal and distal sources.

IODP Expedition 350 was the first to be drilled in the rear part of the Izu-Bonin, although several sites had been drilled in the arc axis to fore-arc region; the scientific objective was to understand the evolution of the Izu rear arc, by drilling a deep-water volcaniclastic section with a long temporal record (Site U1437). The Izu rear arc is dominated by a series of basaltic to dacitic seamount chains up to ~100-km long roughly perpendicular to the arc front. Dredge samples from these are geochemically distinct from arc front rocks, and drilling was undertaken to understand this arc asymmetry. Site U1437 lies in an ~20-km-wide basin between two rear arc seamount chains, ~90-km west of the arc front, and was drilled to 1804 m below the sea floor (mbsf) with excellent recovery. We expected to drill a volcaniclastic apron, but the section is much more mud-rich than expected (~60%), and the remaining fraction of the section is much finer-grained than predicted from its position within the Izu arc, composed half of ashes/tuffs, and half of lapilli tuffs of fine grain size (clasts 6.4 cm) are only sparsely scattered through the lowermost 25% of the section, and only one igneous unit was encountered, a rhyolite peperite intrusion at ~1390 mbsf. The lowest biostratigaphic datum is at 867 mbsf (~6.5 Ma), the lowest palaeomagnetic datum is at ~1300 mbsf (~9 Ma), and the rhyolite peperite at ~1390 mbsf has yielded a U–Pb zircon concordia intercept age of (13.6 + 1.6/−1.7) Ma. Both arc front and rear arc sources contributed to the fine-grained (distal) tephras of the upper 1320 m, but the coarse-grained (proximal) volcaniclastics in the lowest 25% of the section are geochemically similar to the arc front, suggesting arc asymmetry is not recorded in rocks older than ~13 Ma.

The biotic response of calcareous nannoplankton to environmental and climatic changes during the Eocene–Oligocene transition was investigated at a high resolution at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1263 (Walvis Ridge, southeast Atlantic Ocean) and compared with a lower-resolution benthic foraminiferal record. During this time interval, global climate, which had been warm under high levels of atmospheric CO2 (pCO2) during the Eocene, transitioned into the cooler climate of the Oligocene, at overall lower pCO2. At Site 1263, the absolute nannofossil abundance (coccoliths per gram of sediment; N g−1) and the mean coccolith size decreased distinctly after the E–O boundary (EOB; 33.89 Ma), mainly due to a sharp decline in abundance of large-sized Reticulofenestra and Dictyococcites, occurring within a time span of ~ 47 kyr. Carbonate dissolution did not vary much across the EOB; thus, the decrease in abundance and size of nannofossils may reflect an overall decrease in their export production, which could have led to variations in the food availability for benthic foraminifers. The benthic foraminiferal assemblage data are consistent with a global decline in abundance of rectilinear species with complex apertures in the latest Eocene (~ 34.5 Ma), potentially reflecting changes in the food source, i.e., phytoplankton. This was followed by a transient increased abundance of species indicative of seasonal delivery of food to the sea floor (Epistominella spp.; ~ 33.9–33.4 Ma), with a short peak in overall food delivery at the EOB (buliminid taxa; ~ 33.8 Ma). Increased abundance of Nuttallides umbonifera (at ~ 33.3 Ma) indicates the presence of more corrosive bottom waters and possibly the combined arrival of less food at the sea floor after the second step of cooling (Step 2). The most important changes in the calcareous nannofossil and benthic communities occurred ~ 120 kyr after the EOB. There was no major change in nannofossil abundance or assemblage composition at Site 1263 after Step 2 although benthic foraminifera indicate more corrosive bottom waters during this time. During the onset of latest-Eocene–earliest-Oligocene climate change, marine phytoplankton thus showed high sensitivity to fast-changing conditions as well as to a possibly enhanced, pulsed nutrient supply and to the crossing of a climatic threshold (e.g., pCO2 decline, high-latitude cooling and changes in ocean circulation).

The effects on calcite dissolution of both oceanic circulation and volcanic ash-fall were evaluated in lower bathyal sediments over the last 550 ka record from core MD 97-2114, recovered on the northern slope (depth of 1936 m, in the Pacific Deep Water, PDW) of the Chatham Rise (east of New Zealand, SW Pacific Ocean). This area has been impacted by changes in glacial/interglacial circulation and ocean chemistry as well as by the explosive volcanic activity of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Several micro-paleontological dissolution proxies, based on planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils, were analysed in order to evaluate the calcite dissolution of the deep-sea sediments. These were compared with a couple of proxies of primary productivity (benthic foraminiferal epifaunal/infaunal ratio and δ13Cbenthic foraminifera) and the abundance of volcanic glass. The dissolution proxy data from MD 97-2114 were compared with two nearby ODP sites, ODP 1123 (3290 m deep, bathed by the lower Circumpolar Deep Water, LCDW) and ODP 1125 (1365 m deep, bathed by the Antarctic Intermediate Water, AAIW). The results suggest: (1) the calcite dissolution/preservation cycles at all three core sites show Glacial–Interglacial (G–I) periodicities that match the previously described “Pacific-style” CaCO3 cycles; (2) several short-term dissolution events do not follow this general scheme and occur following tephra deposition. The dissolution related to the tephra deposition seems to have mostly affected calcareous nannofossils, thus we hypothesise that the ash-fall induced a temporary reduction of the surface water pH (below 7.8), which affected the coccolithophores that inhabit the surface waters. (3) Other short-term dissolution events (1000 years) are unrelated to tephra deposition and are possibly driven by the slowing of deep-sea circulation and a reduced Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC). This lead to the dominance of older, more corrosive Pacific Deep Water (PDW) flowing in to the region, resulting in coeval dissolution episodes at all three core sites (depth range from 1365 to 3290 m).

A quick and inexpensive method to determine absolute nannofossil abundance in deep sea sediments – the “drop” technique (modified dilution method) – was compared to two other available methods – the filtration and random settling techniques. All techniques rely on the same basic principle, under which a volume of known concentration (bulk sediment weight/mL) is distributed evenly over a known total area (glass slide or filter) to then count particles within a set of (randomly) selected fields of view. The three preparation techniques were also calibrated by spiking the samples with microbeads to approach the “real values” as closely as possible. Significant offsets in abundance estimates between methods mainly reflect bias due to the uneven distribution and/or loss of particles. We show that the drop technique is most consistent and accurate in estimating “real values” and offers similar or better reproducibility than the other techniques. The drop method also allows detection of the same trends with or without calibration with microbeads. The filtration method holds the risk to drastically underestimate absolute abundances, while the settling technique is demanding in terms of time and may suffer from advection processes. The composition of nannofossil assemblages can be reliably determined by any of the three different techniques.

International audience; We investigated which method among smearing, settling, filtration, and random settling is the most accurate for determining the relative abundance of Florisphaera profunda. This species is included in paleoproductivity indices because it is one of the most important deep-water dwellers. Therefore, an accurate assessment of its relative abundance is key to monitoring variations in thermocline and nutricline depths. The low birefringence and flat polygonal shape of F. profunda may lead to inaccurate estimates of its relative abundance as it is poorly visible under light microscopy (LM), and different sample preparation may affect the number of specimens on each slide. We studied eight samples from the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1209B (Shatslcy Rise, NW Pacific) from the last 450 kyr. Each sample was prepared five times using each technique for a total of 160 slides. Through a rigorous analytical and statistical approach, we demonstrated the high reproducibility of each method and showed good agreement among techniques at low percentages of F. profunda. When the percentage of this species increases, the random settling technique differs from the others. Filtration and random settling preparation techniques were calibrated by spiking samples with microbeads. The ratio of microbeads observed in slides prepared using these two methods reflects bias due to loss of particles in the filtration technique. In addition, a hydrodynamic model for a fluttering and tumbling plate - such as F. profunda nannoliths - is proposed here along with calculated sinking velocities. These findings confirmed the efficiency of the long decantation time proposed for the random settling technique. The analysis of replicates, the validation with microbeads and the estimation of settling velocity of nannofossils in the tube convinced us that the higher relative abundance recorded by the random technique is not due to an imprecision of this method but, on the contrary, reflects the fact that it is more effective. Through a multidisciplinary approach based on novel micropaleontological and geochemical analyses, the main paleoceanographic and paleoclimate changes that have influenced the surface- and deep-water circulation in the SW Pacific Ocean (Chatham Rise, eastern New Zealand) during the last million years are reconstructed. This region represents a key area for investigating the climate evolution during the Pleistocene because here the largely wind-driven Antarctic Circumpolar Current interacts with the west Pacific Ocean circulation via the Deep Western Boundary Current, the major source of deep water for the whole Pacific Ocean. To understand coupling or decoupling events between sea surface and bottom waters, a continuous marine sedimentary succession since 1.1 Ma, recovered by the IMAGES (International Marine Past Global Change Study) cruise in the SW Pacific Ocean (Core MD97-2114), has been investigated based on calcareous planktonic and benthic microfossil content and C and O isotope record performed on planktonic and benthic foraminiferal tests. Results show the occurrence of long- and short-term patterns of climate and ocean circulation in the last million years as the result of the interplay of ice-sheet dynamics, surface tropical versus polar water inflow, and trophic status of the surface water. The gephyrocapsids, main component of the Pleistocene calcareous nannofossil assemblages, are here discussed as biostratigraphical and paleoclimate tools. The occurrence of the genus Gephyrocapsa is quantitatively analysed in the core ODP 198-1209B, collected in the NW Pacific Ocean. The studied stratigraphic succession covers a time interval including the Middle Pleistocene Transition (MPT), a highly investigated period characterized by important global climate changes. During the Pleistocene, Gephyrocapsa is extremely abundant and provides several bioevents used in biostratigraphy. In addition to the known standard events, we observe the occurrence of particular Gephyrocapsa morphogroups and significant changes in the relative abundance of G. caribbeanica . In the Early-Middle Pleistocene we identify four intervals based on the Gephyrocapsa content. Moreover, during the MPT, the stratigraphic distribution of Gephyrocapsa underlines a dominance of both the small morphogroup and the medium - sized G. caribbeanica that could be dependent on their paleoecology. Small Gephyrocapsa and G. caribbeanica seem to be more competitive than other coccolithophores during the global oceanographic variations and the re-organisation of the glacial-interglacial periodicity during the MPT.

Introduction This chapter of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 350 Proceedings volume documents the procedures and tools employed in the various shipboard laboratories of the R/V JOIDES Resolution during Expedition 350. This information applies only to shipboard work described in the Expedition Reports section of this volume. Methods for shore-based analyses of Expedition 350 samples and data will be described in the individual scientific contributions to be published in the open literature or in the Expedition Research Results section of this volume. This section describes procedures and equipment used for drilling, coring, and hole completion; core handling; computation of depth for samples and measurements; and sequence of shipboard analyses. Subsequent sections describe specific laboratory procedures and instruments in more details.

During this time interval, the global climate which had been warm during the Eocene, under high levels of atmospheric CO2 (pCO2), transitioned into the cooler climate of the Oligocene, with overall lower pCO2. At Site 1263, the absolute nannofossil abundance (coccoliths per gram of sediment; N g−1) and the mean coccolith size decreased distinctly across the E–O boundary (EOB; 33.89 Ma), mainly due to a sharp decline in abundance of large-sized Reticulofenestra and Dictyococcites, within ~53 kyr. Since carbonate dissolution did not vary much across the EOB, the decrease in abundance and size of nannofossils may highlight an overall decrease in their export production, which could have led to an increased ratio of organic to inorganic carbon (calcite) burial, as well as variations in the food availability for benthic foraminifers. The benthic foraminiferal assemblage data show the global decline in abundance of rectilinear species with complex apertures in the latest Eocene (~34.5 Ma), potentially reflecting changes in the food source, thus phytoplankton, followed by transient increased abundance of species indicative of seasonal delivery of food to the sea floor (Epistominella spp.; ~34.04–33.54 Ma), with a short peak in overall food delivery at the EOB (buliminid taxa; ~33.9 Ma). After Oi-1 (starting at ~33.4 Ma), a high abundance of Nuttallides umbonifera indicates the presence of more corrosive bottom waters, possibly combined with less food arriving at the sea floor. The most important signals in the planktonic and benthic communities, i.e. the marked decrease of large reticulofenestrids, extinctions of planktonic foraminifer species and more pronounced seasonal influx of organic matter, preceded the major expansion of the Antarctic ice sheet (Oi-1) by ~440 kyr. During Oi-1, our data show no major change in nannofossil abundance or assemblage composition occurred at Site 1263, although benthic foraminifera indicate more corrosive bottom waters following this event. Marine plankton thus showed high sensitivity to fast-changing conditions, possibly enhanced but pulsed nutrient supply, during the early onset of latest Eocene-earliest Oligocene climate change, or to a threshold in these changes (e.g. pCO2 decline, high-latitude cooling and ocean circulation).

International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Hole U1436A (proposed Site IBM-4GT) lies in the western part of the Izu fore-arc basin, ~60 km east of the arc-front volcano Aogashima, ~170 km west of the axis of the Izu-Bonin Trench, 1.5 km west of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 792, and at 1776 meters below sea level (mbsl). It was drilled as a 150 m deep geotechnical test hole for potential future deep drilling (5500 meters below seafloor [mbsf]) at proposed Site IBM-4 using the D/V Chikyu. Core from Site U1436 yielded a rich record of Late Pleistocene explosive volcanism, including distinctive black glassy mafic ash layers that may record large-volume eruptions on the Izu arc front. Because of the importance of this discovery, Site U1436 was drilled in three additional holes (U1436B, U1436C, and U1436D), as part of a contingency operation, in an attempt to get better recovery on the black glassy mafic ash layers and enclosing sediments and to better constrain the thickness of the mafic ash layers. IODP Site U1437 is located in the Izu rear arc, ~330 km west of the axis of the Izu-Bonin Trench and ~90 km west of the arc-front volcanoes Myojinsho and Myojin Knoll, at 2117 mbsl. The primary scientific objective for Site U1437 was to characterize “the missing half of the subduction factory”; this was because numerous ODP/Integrated Ocean Drilling Program sites had been drilled in the arc to fore-arc region (i.e., ODP Site 782A Leg 126), but this was the first site to be drilled in the rear part of the Izu arc. A complete view of the arc system is needed to understand the formation of oceanic arc crust and its evolution into continental crust. Site U1437 on the rear arc had excellent core recovery in Holes U1437B and U1437D, and we succeeded in hanging the longest casing ever in the history of R/V JOIDES Resolution scientific drilling (1085.6 m) in Hole U1437E and cored to 1806.5 mbsf. The stratigraphy at Site U1437 was divided into seven lithostratigraphic units (I–VII) that were distinguished from each other based on the proportions and characteristics of tuffaceous mud/mudstone and interbedded tuff, lapilli tuff, and tuff breccia. The section is much more mud rich than expected, with ~60% tuffaceous mud for the section as a whole (89% in the uppermost 433 m) and high sedimentation rates of 100–260 m/My for the upper 1320 m (Units I–V). The proportion (40%) and grain size of tephra are much smaller than expected for an intra-arc basin, composed half of ash/tuff and half of lapilli tuff of fine grain size (clasts < 3 cm). These were deposited by suspension settling through water and from density currents, in relatively distal settings. Volcanic blocks are only sparsely scattered through the lowermost 25% of the section (Units VI and VII, 1320–1806.5 mbsf), which includes hyaloclastite, in situ quench-fragmented blocks, and a rhyolite peperite intrusion (i.e., proximal deposits). The transition from unconsolidated to lithified rocks occurred progressively; however, sediments were considered lithified from 427 mbsf (top of Hole U1437D) downward. Alteration resulted in destruction of fresh glass from ~750 mbsf downward, but minerals are less altered. Because of the alteration, the deepest biostratigraphic datum was at ~850 mbsf and the deepest paleomagnetic datum was at ~1300 mbsf. Additional age control deeper than this depth is provided by an age range of 10.97–11.85 Ma inferred from a nannofossil assemblage at ~1403 mbsf and a preliminary U-Pb zircon concordia intercept age of 13.6 +1.6/–1.7 Ma, measured postcruise on a rhyolite peperite in Unit VI at ~1390 mbsf. Based on the seismic profiles, the Miocene–Oligocene hiatus (~17–23 Ma) was predicted to lie at ~1250 mbsf, but strata at that depth (Unit V, 1120–1312 mbsf) are much younger (~9 Ma), indicating that we recovered a thicker Neogene section of volcaniclastics and associated igneous rocks than anticipated. Our preliminary interpretation of shipboard geochemistry is that arc-front versus rear-arc sources can be distinguished in the upper, relatively distal 1320 m of section (Units I–V), whereas the lower, proximal 25% of the section (Units VI–VII) may be geochemically heterogeneous, suggesting that the rear-arc magmas only fully compositionally diverged after ~13 Ma.

International audience; The high-resolution, multi-proxy investigation of microfossil and isotopic data from Shatsky Rise (ODP Site 1209B, NW Pacific Ocean) is presented to evaluate the potential of calcareous nannofossil assemblages as dissolution and paleoproductivity proxies over the last 450 lea. To identify the best nannofossil index to evaluate dissolution (in particular, under polarized light microscope), we calculate and compare the different nannofossil and planktonic foraminiferal dissolution-indices from our original dataset The results demonstrate that the most reliable and reproducible nannofossil dissolution index is the Nannofossil Dissolution Index (NDI) proposed by Marino et al. (2009), particularly for records prior to 250 ka. The NDI data from the studied Site 1209B represent evidence of preservation maxima mainly during deglaciations, whereas dissolution peaks are recorded at the onset of glacial phases or during severe interglacials. These fluctuations are demonstrated to be basin-wide features in the Pacific. The synchronous timing in the fluctuations of the preservation indices, which consistently lagged behind the oxygen isotope cycles, clearly demonstrates the basin-wide changes in the ocean chemistry during the glacial interglacial transitions. The Mid-Brunhes Dissolution Event, which was recorded in the Western Pacific at depths below the lysocline at the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11, is not detectable at our relatively shallower site. At the studied site, the intervals of high productivity generally coincide with the time of good preservation and light carbon-isotope values and vice versa. Therefore, carbonate undersaturation and changes in ocean chemistry (carbonate ion concentration) rather than the variations in the organic carbon flux appear to have controlled the pattern of CaCO3 preservation. In addition to the characterization of the dissolution proxies, changes in the calcareous nannofossil assemblages were used to evaluate the primary productivity fluctuations at the mid-latitudes of the NW Pacific over the last 450 ka. The results highlight a general decrease of paleoproductivity during the entire time period as well as shorter glacial/interglacial fluctuations from the base-core upwards. We interpret these features to be variations in the thermocline and nutricline dynamics related to the northward migration of the Kuroshio Extension, which was triggered by the Mid-Brunhes Event and may have caused deepening of the thermocline/nutricline at the site. The spectral and wavelet analyses performed on the microfossil database prove that the variations in paleoproductivity and carbonate dissolution over the last 450 ka were primarily driven by the glacial interglacial variability (100 ka periodicity) and by the obliquity-controlled changes.
