Abstract

In this paper is reported the obtaining of hydrogels from poly hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-acryla-mide, by simultaneous crosslinking copolymerization from corresponding monomers by gamma photon irradiation. The composition of network chains in the copolymer was estimated from elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy. Additionally, the toxicity of these materials was tested finding the free acrylamide and biological assay SOS in bacteria. The extracts of washed matrices of copolymers showed low level of free acrylamide. Moreover, they were non toxic on the E. coli cells tested at any time.

Abstract

This paper describes the dismantling of a category I selfshielded gamma irradiation facility model MPX--25M. The following specific objectives were established: a) to identify aspects of the insurance contract, human and technical resources b) to assess the radiological situation of the process and c) to analyze the potential radiological extraordinary events in each step of the process by providing the appropriate answers. The assessment of radiological events may serve as a reference for addressing the process of dismantling other similar irradiators.

Abstract

En el trabajo se realizó la síntesis del copolímero por injerto poli (3-hidroxibutirato)-g- poliacrilamida [P (HB-g-AAm)] por copolimerización de injerto radioinducido del monómero acrilamida en el PHB. El estudio se llevó a cabo por el método de la irradiación simultánea. La estructura del copolímero se identificó por espectroscopía Infrarrojo por Transformada de Fourier (FTIR). Además, se realizó el estudio térmico del compuesto obtenido por análisis termogravimétrico (TGA) y calorimetría diferencial de barrido (DSC). De los resultados se encontraron señales (vibraciones de valencia -N-H) por FTIR que constituyen una importante evidencia de la reacción de injerto. El grado de injerto determinado por ATG fue de 10% y se detectaron cambios en los parámetros termodinámicos estudiados por DSC, que muestran una disminución de la cristalinidad y un aumento de la temperatura de transición vítrea. Los resultados demostraron la formación del copolímero por injerto inducido por radiaciones gamma.

Abstract

El poli (3-hidroxibutirato) (PHB) es un material importante de aplicación en el campo biomédico. Sin embargo, en condiciones comunes, se presenta con algunas desventajas que limitan su aplicación, como son su fragilidad y su moderada hidrofobicidad. Debido a esto, su campo de aplicaciones se encuentra limitado. Las radiaciones se pueden utilizar para transformar químicamente este sustrato y mejorar sus propiedades. En este estudio, el PHB modificado con el acetato de vinilo (VAc) por medio de una copolimerización por injerto radio-inducido, fue caracterizado utilizando espectroscopías FTIR y Raman. El análisis por FTIR no reveló ninguna banda característica que diferenciara al copolímero por injerto de los homopolímeros que lo forman, pero la espectroscopía Raman reveló la formación de nuevas bandas que caracterizan al nuevo material.

Abstract

The effect of gamma radiation from a 60Co source on the structure of a nonionic surfactant, namely TRITON X-100, was investigated. Three main regions can be distinguished in the behavior of the mean value of ethoxy groups with an increase in the absorbed dose. However just a slightly decrease on this mean value was obtained when the dose range from 0 to 70 kGy.

Abstract

The present study is aimed to determine the bioburden for assessing the sterilization dose and to identify the influence of the absorbed gamma radiation dose on the molar mass and chemical structure of chitosan. The characterization includes the determination of the intrinsic viscosity, deacetylation degree as well as infrared spectroscopy. The obtained results have shown the occurrence of chain cleavage caused by irradiation. It was revealed by a decrease in the intrinsic viscosities of the polymers. The invariance of the infrared spectra of polymers indicated that chain degradation occurs without significant change of the chemical structure. The results obtained have practical implication in the field of radiation sterilization of chitosan used for microencapsulation of mammalian cells.

Abstract

Gamma radiation (GR) is a promising technique, among known advanced oxidation processes, degrading water contaminants. Nevertheless, few authors report the degradation of sulfonamides by GR, and limited information exists concerning the use of GR in the case of sulfadiazine (SDZ). The objectives of this work are (1) evaluating GR as an alternative method for treating wastewater contaminated with SDZ and examinating the intensification of GR with oxidants (H2O2 or Fenton reagent). GR was performed with a high-activity 60Co source. The gamma radiation/Fenton process gave the best result, leading to total SDZ removal and high (74.13%) pollutant mineralization.

10. Evaluación de la citotoxicidad de nanogeles de polivinilpirrolidona (PVP) en fibroblastos murinos

Abstract

Introduccion. Los nanogeles estan siendo estudiados para diversas aplicaciones biomedicas. Una de las mas relevantes es como portadores de farmacos con propositos terapeuticos, incrementando la bioactividad y el transporte de componentes activos a sitios o celulas especificas. Objetivo. Evaluar la citotoxicidad de nanogeles de polivinilpirrolidona (PVP) de 30 y 100 nm en celulas de fibroblastos murino. Materiales y metodos. Se evaluo la citotoxicidad de nanogeles de PVP a traves de integridad lisosomal mediante el ensayo de captacion del rojo neutro en celulas de fibroblasto murino L 929. Resultados. Los resultados de citotoxicidad mostraron que no existen efectos citotoxicos en celulas tratadas con los nanogeles de 30 nm a las concentraciones de 50, 100, 200 y 300 µg/mL durante 24 h y 48 h. Sin embargo, los nanogeles de 100 nm a las 48 horas presentaron cierta citotoxicidad al disminuir el % de sobrevida a menos de 70% de celulas vivas, no asi a las 24 horas que no se observo este efecto. Conclusion. Los nanogeles de PVP sintetizados tienen un tamano de 30 nm y 100 nm, caracteristica que puede ser explotada para liberacion de drogas intracelular. Los nanogeles de 30 nm no mostraron citotoxicidad para las celulas, propiedad que los hace candidatos potenciales en nuevas formulaciones como sistemas de liberacion controlada de farmacos anticancerigenos.

Abstract

Degradation of paracetamol (N-(4-hydroxiphenyl)acetamide) in aqueous solution by gamma radiation, gamma radiation/H2O2 and gamma radiation/Fenton processes was studied. Parameters affecting the radiolysis of paracetamol such as radiation dose, initial concentration of pollutant, pH and initial oxidant concentration were investigated. Gamma radiation was performed using a (60)Co source irradiator. Paracetamol degradation and mineralization increased with increasing absorbed radiation dose, but decreased with increasing initial concentration of the drug in aqueous solution. The addition of H2O2 resulted in an increased effect on irradiation-driven paracetamol degradation in comparison with the performance of the irradiation-driven process alone: paracetamol removal increased from 48.9% in the absence of H2O2 to 95.2% for H2O2 concentration of 41.7 mmol/L. However, the best results were obtained with gamma radiation/Fenton process with 100% of the drug removal at 5 kGy, for optimal H2O2 and Fe(2+) concentrations at 13.9 and 2.3 mmol/L, respectively, with a high mineralization of 63.7%. These results suggest gamma radiation/H2O2 and gamma radiation/Fenton processes as promising methods for paracetamol degradation in polluted wastewaters.

Abstract

Structural changes in pure citronellol after exposure to different doses of gamma radiation were elucidated by spectroscopic techniques and molecular modelling methods. The citronellol samples were irradiated in an MPX-γ30 installation (60Co, E = 1.25 MeV), absorbing in a dose range from 1.45 to 10.02 kGy. Citronellal and hydroxycitronellal compounds were detected in the irradiated samples. Some mechanisms of radiolytic transformations for citronellol were proposed and modelled at semiempirical quantum chemical level. These results provide the basis for the possible development of new synthetic pathways for close structurally related compounds, based on the use of gamma irradiation.
