Error Analysis and Treatment seems to be paramount to the success of the learning-teaching process of a second (or further) language as it deals with the very material produced by learners during their learning process. This study aims to propose an error analysis and treatment method that could link the theoretical background of Error Analysis and the daily practice of English as a Second Language in the classroom. To reach the objective we analysed (following and applying the proposed method) 100 different written outputs of learners of different levels of English. The proposed method Discussion, Analysis, and Feedback (ADF) has clear classroom implications that can improve teachers’ and learners’ performance and, can also help assess and reassess the syllabi of ESL.

ABSTRACTVitamin D, microbiota, and the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) have been the focus of recent research due to their potential role in maintaining overall health. We hypothesize that MedDiet may alter the gut microbiota profile through changes in vitamin D levels. We aimed to investigate changes in gut microbiota and serum vitamin D levels after a MedDiet within a lifestyle intervention. The study included 91 patients with obesity and metabolic syndrome, who were categorized based on their serum vitamin D levels as having either optimal or low 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D levels]. The profile of the gut microbiota was analyzed by the 16S rRNA sequencing, inferring its functionality through PICRUsT. Participants underwent a hypocaloric MedDiet and change in their lifestyle for 1 year, and the profile and functionality of their gut microbiota were evaluated by analyzing inter-individual differences in time. At baseline, gut microbiota profiles qualitatively differed between participants with Optimal or Low 25(OH)D levels [Unweighted (p = 0.016)]. Abstract Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently a growing epidemic disease that can lead to cirrhosis and hepatic cancer when it evolves into non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a gap not well understood. To characterize this disease, pigs, considered to be one of the most similar to human experimental animal models, were used. To date, all swine-based settings have been carried out using rare predisposed breeds or long-term experiments. Herein, we fully describe a new experimental swine model for initial and reversible NASH using cross-bred animals fed on a high saturated fat, fructose, cholesterol, cholate, choline and methionine-deficient diet. To gain insight into the hepatic transcriptome that undergoes steatosis and steatohepatitis, we used RNA sequencing. This process significantly up-regulated 976 and down-regulated 209 genes mainly involved in cellular processes. Gene expression changes of 22 selected transcripts were verified by RT-qPCR. Lipid droplet area was positively associated with CD68, GPNMB, LGALS3, SLC51B and SPP1, and negatively with SQLE expressions. When these genes were tested in a second experiment of NASH reversion, LGALS3, SLC51B and SPP1 significantly decreased their expression. However, only LGALS3 was associated with lipid droplet areas. Our results suggest a role for LGALS3 in the transition of NAFLD to NASH.

BackgroundsVitamin D and testosterone deficiency have been widely related to obesity. However, only a few studies have investigated the effect of vitamin D on testosterone in the context of obesity, in which controversial results have been raised.ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and testosterone levels in young men with different grade of obesity.Design and methodsThis cross-sectional study included 269 healthy young men with obesity (body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2). Participants were divided into two groups based on their serum 25(OH)D levels (134 subjects with vitamin D sufficiency and 135 participants with vitamin D deficiency, according to the 50th percentile of 25(OH)D). Serum 25(OH)D and sex hormones have been measured. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is one of the most important medical problems around the world. Identification of patient´s singular characteristic could help to reduce the clinical impact and facilitate individualized management. This study aimed to categorize MetS patients using phenotypical and clinical variables habitually collected during health check-ups of individuals considered to have high cardiovascular risk. The selected markers to categorize MetS participants included anthropometric variables as well as clinical data, biochemical parameters and prescribed pharmacological treatment. An exploratory factor analysis was carried out with a subsequent hierarchical cluster analysis using the z-scores from factor analysis. The first step identified three different factors. The first was determined by hypercholesterolemia and associated treatments, the second factor exhibited glycemic disorders and accompanying treatments and the third factor was characterized by hepatic enzymes. Subsequently four clusters of patients were identified, where cluster 1 was characterized by glucose disorders and treatments, cluster 2 presented mild MetS, cluster 3 presented exacerbated levels of hepatic enzymes and cluster 4 highlighted cholesterol and its associated treatments Interestingly, the liver status related cluster was characterized by higher protein consumption and cluster 4 with low polyunsaturated fatty acid intake. This research emphasized the potential clinical relevance of hepatic impairments in addition to MetS traditional characterization for precision and personalized management of MetS patients.

Background: Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) has a hazardous influence on systemic inflammation, insulin resistance and an adverse metabolic profile, which increases the risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and chronic complications of diabetes. In our study we aimed to evaluate the association of VAT and the triglyceride glucose (TyG) as a proxy of insulin resistance surrogated with metabolic and liver risk factors among subjects diagnosed with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed including 326 participants with MetS (55–75 years) from the PREDIMED-Plus study. Liver-status markers, VAT and TyG were assessed. Participants were stratified by tertiles according to VAT ( n = 254) and TyG ( n = 326). A receiver operating characteristic curve was used to analyse the efficiency of TyG for VAT. Results: Subjects with greater visceral fat depots showed worse lipid profile, higher homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), TyG, alanine transaminase (ALT), fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF-21), fatty liver index (FLI) and hepatic steatosis index (HSI) compared with participants in the first tertile. ABSTRACT Introduction: the incidence of cystic pancreatic lesions (CPL) in the asymptomatic population is increasing. Achieving a preoperative diagnosis of CPL still remains a challenge. Objectives: to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the cytological diagnosis of CPL from samples obtained by cytology brush versus standard endoscopic ultrasound fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA). Methods: a multicenter, randomized, open-label trial was performed of EUS-cytology brush (EUS-EB) versus EUS-FNA for the cytological diagnosis of CPL. Patients that underwent EUS-FNA with a CPL > 15 mm were included and randomized into two groups: group I, EUS-EB; group II, EUS-FNA. The final diagnosis was based on the histological evaluation of surgical specimens and clinical parameters, imaging and a five year follow-up in non-operated patients. The main outcome was the diagnostic accuracy of both methods. Secondary outcomes were the diagnostic adequacy of specimens and the rate of adverse events. Data were compared using the Chi-squared test. An intention to treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) analysis were performed. Results: sixty-five patients were included in the study, 31 in group I and 34 in group II. Three patients initially randomized to group I were changed to group II as it was impossible to obtain a sample using the brush. The mean size of the CPL was 28.2 mm (range 16-60 mm). The diagnostic accuracy of EUS-EB was not superior to EUS-FNA, neither in the ITT nor the PP analysis (44.8% vs 41.1%, p = 0.77 and 38.4% vs 45.9%, p = 0.55). Conclusions: EUS-EB does not improve the diagnostic accuracy of CPL in comparison with EUS-FNA.

Competitiveness of solar energy is one of current main research topics. Overall efficiency of solar plants can be improved by using advanced control strategies. To design and tuning properly advanced control strategies, a mathematical model of the plant is needed. The model has to fulfill two important points: (1) It has to reproduce accurately the dynamics of the real system; and (2) since the model is used to test advanced control strategies, its computational burden has to be as low as possible. This trade-off is essential to optimize the tuning process of the controller and minimize the commissioning time. In this paper, the modeling of the large-scale commercial solar trough plants Mojave Beta and Mojave Alpha is presented. These two models were used to test advanced control strategies to operate the plants.

The PPAR nuclear receptor family has acquired great relevance in the last decade, which is formed by three different isoforms (PPARα, PPARβ/δ, and PPAR ϒ). Those nuclear receptors are members of the steroid receptor superfamily which take part in essential metabolic and life-sustaining actions. Specifically, PPARG has been implicated in the regulation of processes concerning metabolism, inflammation, atherosclerosis, cell differentiation, and proliferation. Thus, a considerable amount of literature has emerged in the last ten years linking PPARG signalling with metabolic conditions such as obesity and diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and, more recently, cancer. This review paper, at crossroads of basic sciences, preclinical, and clinical data, intends to analyse the last research concerning PPARG signalling in obesity and cancer. Afterwards, possible links between four interrelated actors will be established: PPARG, the vitamin D/VDR system, obesity, and cancer, opening up the door to further investigation and new hypothesis in this fascinating area of research.

La incorporación de un óxido a la matriz de un segundo produce cambios en las propiedades superficiales del sistema inicial, así como modificaciones en la estructura electrónica del material; de hecho, la recombinación de portadores de cargas en un material semiconductor se ve modificada por la incorporación de otro elemento a la red del semiconductor. En particular, las propiedades estructurales, morfológicas, superficiales y catalíticas del óxido de zirconio se ven afectadas al depositarlo sobre otro que actúe como matriz de soporte. En este trabajo se han preparado óxidos mixtos ZrO2-SiO2 empleando el método sol gel de precipitación seguido de diversos tratamientos térmicos. Los materiales así obtenidos fueron caracterizados por diversas técnicas evaluándose además su actividad fotocatalítica en la degradación del 3-nitrofenol. Si bien el comportamiento fotocatalítico del sistema ZrO2-SiO2 no difiere del que exhiben los óxidos simples ZrO2 y SiO2, las propiedades de estos materiales tipo óxido mixto sí están fuertemente condicionadas no sólo por el método de preparación sino por los tratamientos de calcinación.

To further understand the pharmacological properties of N-oleoylethanolamine (OEA), a naturally occurring lipid that activates peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), we designed sulfamoyl analogs based on its structure. Among the compounds tested, N-octadecyl-N'-propylsulfamide (CC7) was selected for functional comparison with OEA. The performed studies include the following computational and biological approaches: 1) molecular docking analyses; 2) molecular biology studies with PPARα; 3) pharmacological studies on feeding behavior and visceral analgesia. For the docking studies, we compared OEA and CC7 data with crystallization data obtained with the reference PPARα agonist GW409544. OEA and CC7 interacted with the ligand-binding domain of PPARα in a similar manner to GW409544. Both compounds produced similar transcriptional activation by in vitro assays, including the GST pull-down assay and reporter gene analysis. In addition, CC7 and OEA induced the mRNA expression of CPT1a in HpeG2 cells through PPARα and the induction was avoided with PPARα-specific siRNA. In vivo studies in rats showed that OEA and CC7 had anorectic and antiobesity activity and induced both lipopenia and decreases in hepatic fat content. However, different effects were observed when measuring visceral pain; OEA produced visceral analgesia whereas CC7 showed no effects. These results suggest that OEA activity on the PPARα receptor (e.g., lipid metabolism and feeding behavior) may be dissociated from other actions at alternative targets (e.g., pain) because other non cannabimimetic ligands that interact with PPARα, such as CC7, do not reproduce the full spectrum of the pharmacological activity of OEA. These results provide new opportunities for the development of specific PPARα-activating drugs focused on sulfamide derivatives with a long alkyl chain for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction.

We resent a brief analysis about main Mexican tornadoes´ characteristics, based on data collected between 2000 to 2010, talking about spatial and temporal expressions (historical, seasonal and horary) in order to show the importance of it destruction capacity and also the people´s vulnerability in Mexico.

La implantación del Sistema de Gestión Penitenciaria, desarrollado en la Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas, y el correspondiente crecimiento de los datos generados trajeron como consecuencia que se viera afectado el rendimiento de la aplicación ya que no cuenta con una solución relacionada con la inteligencia del negocio. El propósito fundamental de este trabajo es el diseño de un Data Mart sobre la sala situacional del Sistema de Gestión Penitenciaria desde el punto de vista de Clasificación y Atención Integral para así dar soporte al proceso de toma de decisiones por parte del sistema penitenciario. El Data Mart está basado en la metodología Data Warehouse Engineering Process. Procesos de Ingeniería de Almacenes de Datos, utilizando el enfoque propuesto por Ralph Kimball así como la arquitectura de dos capas. Como gestor de base de datos se hace uso de Oracle 10g, proponiendo además, la Suite de Inteligencia de Negocio Pentaho para el proceso de extracción, transformación y carga de los datos. El equipo de desarrollo tiene entre sus metas la creación de un Data Mart para cada módulo del sistema, de manera que se puedan integrar finalmente para la construcción de un Data Warehouse central que ayude al proceso de gestión de información y una acertada toma de decisiones.

Abstract Background Several studies have suggested secreted frizzled-related protein 2 (SFRP2) gene as a potential clinical biomarker in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, its diagnostic role remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the significance of SFRP2 methylation levels in a large cohort of biological specimens (including blood, adipose and colonic tissues) from patients with CRC, thereby potentially identifying new biomarker utility. Methods We examined the expression (by qPCR) and methylation status (by 450 K DNA array and DNA pyrosequencing) of the SFRP2 gene in healthy participants (N = 110, aged as 53.7 (14.2), 48/62 males/females) and patients with CRC (N = 85, aged 67.7 (10.5), 61/24 males/females), across different biological tissues, and assessing its potential as a biomarker for CRC. Additionally, we investigated the effect of recombinant human SFRP2 (rhSFRP2) as a therapeutic target, on cell proliferation, migration, and the expression of key genes related to carcinogenesis and the Wnt pathway.
