Abstract

UK academe has been frequently reported as being a male-dominated space where cultures and practices persistently discriminate against women reaching the higher echelons of the profession (Knights and Richards, 2003). My research is concerned with one important aspect of higher education - its predominant research culture - and asks whether increased use of Internet technologies is disrupting the research culture's traditional androcentric structures, values, interactions, identities and practices, to create more of a level playing field for male and female academics working in UK higher education institutions.

2. Transmission, Transformation and Ritual: An Investigation of Students' and Researchers' Digitally Mediated Communications and Collaborative Work

Abstract

This article explores the use of multiple digital tools for mediating communications, drawing on two recent empirical studies in which students and researchers in UK higher education worked on collaborative activities: how different tools were used and the quality of the communications and their contributions to collaborative working and knowledge construction are outlined. We draw on Pea's proposition that communications can be understood as transmissive, ritualised or transformative depending on their impact on other participants. Most of the students' communications were either transmissive or ritualistic, although there were also generative conversations offering mutual support. Researchers' conversations were more often transformative, using tools consistently, for specific purposes. Researchers matched the tool to the specific needs of the task, whereas the students chose tools based on friendship groups and lifestyles. Transformative communications were powerful in co-configuring new knowledge and resources, and the importance of the ritual communications in maintaining the social order was also essential to communications in collaborative settings. We conclude that close attention to protocols, social norms and patterns of use in digitally mediated "conversations" is required to develop collaborative partnerships and support transformation practices amongst higher education "workers". Abstract

In this article, the author discusses marginal annotations made by English philosopher John Stuart Mill in his copy of the "Essays" of American transcendentalist philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is argued that these annotations reveal Mill's negative opinion of Emerson's work, which the author partially attributes to the generally sour Anglo-American relations of the 19th century. Focus is given to Mill's distaste for Emerson's poetry and criticism of his sentimental understanding of love.

Abstract

This article presents information on various socio-political and administrative developments in the U.S. and from around the world. An invitation was made by the Czechoslovak unofficial opposition, Charter 77, to activists from East, West and nonaligned countries to attend a seminar in Prague beginning June 17, 1988. The invitation spoke of overcoming the influence of militaristic and police ideologies and overcoming the machines and ideologies that propagate intolerance and hate. Representatives came from groups in Hungary and Poland as well as from Britain, Italy, West Germany, the Netherlands, India and Puerto Rico.

Abstract

This paper grows out of a reading of “The Autobiography of Henry Adams” that pays particular attention to Adams’ thinking about the practice and significance of work. Adams struggled to reconcile cultural and familial expectations with personal aims and capacities. Drawing in on T.J. Jackson Lears’ writings on American anti-modernism, I highlight Adams’ resistance to Protestant work ethic discipline. Adams’ resistance can be delineated as his inability to settle on a career, his slow or low productivity levels, his expectation that work would engender and sustain a sense of his own creativity, his difficulty maintaining the category distinction between work and leisure, and his own sense of himself as a failure. I am interested in how Adams’ moments of both conformity and resistance provide a template for larger questions about the political significance of work in his era. I also focus on the extent to which Adams highlights labor market participation as increasingly a requirement of proper citizenship, both among elites and common citizens. Adams was part of a moneyed aristocratic class with Puritan roots free from economic need but who understood productive labor as a moral imperative. And, Adams was writing during a period of massive economic reorganization, the end of slavery and the consolidation of industrial capitalism, when the practice and meaning of work were being reimagined. Adams’ account of his experience allows us to consider the function of the dominant fantasy of productive labor market participation, namely that work guards against dependency of all forms. Adams partial or ambivalent resistance to the moral imperative to labor diligently and productively opens up new possibilities for conceptualizing the political significance of work as a component of responsible citizenship.
