In order to perform isogeometric analysis with increased smoothness on complex domains, trimming, variational coupling or unstructured spline methods can be used. The latter two classes of methods require a multi-patch segmentation of the domain, and provide continuous bases along patch interfaces. In the context of shell modeling, variational methods are widely used, whereas the application of unstructured spline methods on shell problems is rather scarce. In this paper, we therefore provide a qualitative and a quantitative comparison of a selection of unstructured spline constructions, in particular the D-Patch, Almost-$C^1$, Analysis-Suitable $G^1$ and the Approximate $C^1$ constructions. Using this comparison, we aim to provide insight into the selection of methods for practical problems, as well as directions for future research. In the qualitative comparison, the properties of each method are evaluated and compared. In the quantitative comparison, a selection of numerical examples is used to highlight different advantages and disadvantages of each method. In the latter, comparison with weak coupling methods such as Nitsche's method or penalty methods is made as well. In brief, it is concluded that the Approximate $C^1$ and Analysis-Suitable $G^1$ converge optimally in the analysis of a bi-harmonic problem, without the need of special refinement procedures. Furthermore, these methods provide accurate stress fields. On the other hand, the Almost-$C^1$ and D-Patch provide relatively easy construction on complex geometries. The Almost-$C^1$ method does not have limitations on the valence of boundary vertices, unlike the D-Patch, but is only applicable to biquadratic local bases. Following from these conclusions, future research directions are proposed, for example towards making the Approximate $C^1$ and Analysis-Suitable $G^1$ applicable to more complex geometries.

Mesh adaptivity is a technique to provide detail in numerical solutions without the need to refine the mesh over the whole domain. Mesh adaptivity in isogeometric analysis can be driven by Truncated Hierarchical B-splines (THB-splines) which add degrees of freedom locally based on finer B-spline bases. Labeling of elements for refinement is typically done using residual-based error estimators. In this paper, an adaptive meshing workflow for isogeometric Kirchhoff-Love shell analysis is developed. This framework includes THB-splines, mesh admissibility for combined refinement and coarsening and the Dual-Weighted Residual (DWR) method for computing element-wise error contributions. The DWR can be used in several structural analysis problems, allowing the user to specify a goal quantity of interest which is used to mark elements and refine the mesh. This goal functional can involve, for example, displacements, stresses, eigenfrequencies etc. The proposed framework is evaluated through a set of different benchmark problems, including modal analysis, buckling analysis and non-linear snap-through and bifurcation problems, showing high accuracy of the DWR estimator and efficient allocation of degrees of freedom for advanced shell computations.

Geometrically continuous splines are piecewise polynomial functions defined on a collection of patches which are stitched together through transition maps. They are called $G^{r}$-splines if, after composition with the transition maps, they are continuously differentiable functions to order $r$ on each pair of patches with stitched boundaries. This type of splines has been used to represent smooth shapes with complex topology for which (parametric) spline functions on fixed partitions are not sufficient. In this article, we develop new algebraic tools to analyze $G^r$-spline spaces. We define $G^{r}$-domains and transition maps using an algebraic approach, and establish an algebraic criterion to determine whether a piecewise function is $G^r$-continuous on the given domain. In the proposed framework, we construct a chain complex whose top homology is isomorphic to the $G^{r}$-spline space. This complex generalizes Billera-Schenck-Stillman homological complex used to study parametric splines. Additionally, we show how previous constructions of $G^r$-splines fit into this new algebraic framework, and present an algorithm to construct a bases for $G^r$-spline spaces. We illustrate how our algebraic approach works with concrete examples, and prove a dimension formula for the $G^r$-spline space in terms of invariants to the chain complex. The purpose of this study is to provide means to physicians for automated and fast recognition of airways diseases. In this work, we mainly focus on measures that can be easily recorded using a spirometer. The signals used in this framework are simulated using the linear bi-compartment model of the lungs. This allows us to simulate ventilation under the hypothesis of ventilation at rest (tidal breathing). By changing the resistive and elastic parameters, data samples are realized simulating healthy, fibrosis and asthma breathing. On this synthetic data, different machine learning models are tested and their performance is assessed. All but the Naive bias classifier show accuracy of at least 99%. This represents a proof of concept that Machine Learning can accurately differentiate diseases based on manufactured spirometry data. This paves the way for further developments on the topic, notably testing the model on real data.

Effective computation of resultants is a central problem in elimination theory and polynomial system solving. Commonly, we compute the resultant as a quotient of determinants of matrices and we say that there exists a determinantal formula when we can express it as a determinant of a matrix whose elements are the coefficients of the input polynomials. We study the resultant in the context of mixed multilinear polynomial systems, that is multilinear systems with polynomials having different supports, on which determinantal formulas were not known. We construct determinantal formulas for two kind of multilinear systems related to the Multiparameter Eigenvalue Problem (MEP): first, when the polynomials agree in all but one block of variables; second, when the polynomials are bilinear with different supports, related to a bipartite graph. We use the Weyman complex to construct Koszul-type determinantal formulas that generalize Sylvester-type formulas. We can use the matrices associated to these formulas to solve square systems without computing the resultant. The combination of the resultant matrices with the eigenvalue and eigenvector criterion for polynomial systems leads to a new approach for solving MEP., Comment: 29 pages, accepted for publication in SIAGA

We present a completeness characterization of box splines on three-directional triangulations, also called Type-I box spline spaces, based on edge-contact smoothness properties. For any given Type-I box spline, of specific maximum degree and order of global smoothness, our results allow to identify the local linear subspace of polynomials spanned by the box spline translates. We use the global super-smoothness properties of box splines as well as the additional super-smoothness conditions at edges to characterize the spline space spanned by the box spline translates. Subsequently, we prove the completeness of this space space with respect to the local polynomial space induced by the box spline translates. The completeness property allows the construction of hierarchical spaces spanned by the translates of box splines for any polynomial degree on multilevel Type-I grids. We provide a basis for these hierarchical box spline spaces under explicit geometric conditions of the domain., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures

In this paper we provide a new method to certify that a nearby polynomial system has a singular isolated root with a prescribed multiplicity structure. More precisely, given a polynomial system f $=(f\_1, \ldots, f\_N)\in C[x\_1, \ldots, x\_n]^N$, we present a Newton iteration on an extended deflated system that locally converges, under regularity conditions, to a small deformation of $f$ such that this deformed system has an exact singular root. The iteration simultaneously converges to the coordinates of the singular root and the coefficients of the so called inverse system that describes the multiplicity structure at the root. We use $$\alpha$$-theory test to certify the quadratic convergence, and togive bounds on the size of the deformation and on the approximation error. The approach relies on an analysis of the punctual Hilbert scheme, for which we provide a new description. We show in particular that some of its strata can be rationally parametrized and exploit these parametrizations in the certification. We show in numerical experimentation how the approximate inverse system can be computed as a starting point of the Newton iterations and the fast numerical convergence to the singular root with its multiplicity structure, certified by our criteria., Comment: International Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic Computation, Jul 2020, Kalamata, France

Future e-mobility calls for efficient electrical machines. For different areas of operation, these machines have to satisfy certain desired properties that often depend on their design. Here we investigate the use of multipatch Isogeometric Analysis (IgA) for the simulation and shape optimization of the electrical machines. In order to get fast simulation and optimization results, we use non-overlapping domain decomposition (DD) methods to solve the large systems of algebraic equations arising from the IgA discretization of underlying partial differential equations. The DD is naturally related to the multipatch representation of the computational domain, and provides the framework for the parallelization of the DD solvers.

A fundamental problem in computational algebraic geometry is the computation of the resultant. A central question is when and how to compute it as the determinant of a matrix. whose elements are the coefficients of the input polynomials up-to sign. This problem is well understood for unmixed multihomogeneous systems, that is for systems consisting of multihomogeneous polynomials with the * 1 same support. However, little is known for mixed systems, that is for systems consisting of polynomials with different supports. We consider the computation of the multihomogeneous resultant of bilinear systems involving two different supports. We present a constructive approach that expresses the resultant as the exact determinant of a Koszul resultant matrix, that is a matrix constructed from maps in the Koszul complex. We exploit the resultant matrix to propose an algorithm to solve such systems. In the process we extend the classical eigenvalues and eigenvectors criterion to a more general setting. This paper is concerned with the construction of graded meshes for approximating so-called singular solutions of elliptic boundary value problems by means of multipatch discontinuous Galerkin Isogeometric Analysis schemes. Such solutions appear, for instance, in domains with re-entrant corners on the boundary of the computational domain, in problems with changing boundary conditions, in interface problems, or in problems with singular source terms. Making use of the analytic behavior of the solution, we construct the graded meshes in the neighborhoods of such singular points following a multipatch approach. We prove that appropriately graded meshes lead to the same convergence rates as in the case of smooth solutions with approximately the same number of degrees of freedom. Representative numerical examples are studied in order to confirm the theoretical convergence rates and to demonstrate the efficiency of the mesh grading technology in Isogeometric Analysis.

Subdivision surfaces are proven to be a powerful tool in geometric modeling and computer graphics, due to the great flexibility they offer in capturing irregular topologies. This paper discusses the robust and efficient implementation of an isogeometric discretization approach to partial differential equations on surfaces using subdivision methodology. Elliptic equations with the Laplace-Beltrami and the surface bi-Laplacian operator as well as the associated eigenvalue problems are considered. Thereby, efficiency relies on the proper choice of a numerical quadrature scheme which preserves the expected higher order consistency. A particular emphasis is on the robustness of the approach in the vicinity of extraordinary vertices. In this paper, the focus is on Loop's subdivision scheme on triangular meshes. Based on a series of numerical experiments, different quadrature schemes are compared and a mid-edge quadrature, which is easy-to-implement via lookup tables, turns out to be a preferable choice due to its robustness and efficiency., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

Isogeometric analysis (IgA) uses the same class of basis functions for both, representing the geometry of the computational domain and approximating the solution. In practical applications, geometrical patches are used in order to get flexibility in the geometrical representation. This multi-patch representation corresponds to a decomposition of the computational domain into non-overlapping subdomains also called patches in the geometrical framework. We will present discontinuous Galerkin (dG) methods that allow for discontinuities across the subdomain (patch) boundaries. The required interface conditions are weakly imposed by the dG terms associated with the boundary of the sub-domains. The construction and the corresponding discretization error analysis of such dG multi-patch IgA schemes will be given for heterogeneous diffusion model problems in volumetric 2d and 3d domains as well as on open and closed surfaces. The theoretical results are confirmed by numerous numerical experiments which have been performed in G+SMO. The concept and the main features of the IgA library G+SMO are also described.

We develop a new symbolic-numeric algorithm for the certification of singular isolated points, using their associated local ring structure and certified numerical computations. An improvement of an existing method to compute inverse systems is presented, which avoids redundant computation and reduces the size of the intermediate linear systems to solve. We derive a one-step deflation technique, from the description of the multiplicity structure in terms of differentials. The deflated system can be used in Newton-based iterative schemes with quadratic convergence. Starting from a polynomial system and a small-enough neighborhood, we obtain a criterion for the existence and uniqueness of a singular root of a given multiplicity structure, applying a well-chosen symbolic perturbation. Standard verification methods, based eg. on interval arithmetic and a fixed point theorem, are employed to certify that there exists a unique perturbed system with a singular root in the domain. Applications to topological degree computation and to the analysis of real branches of an implicit curve illustrate the method.

We present a new algorithm for isolating the real roots of a system of multivariate polynomials, given in the monomial basis. It is inspired by existing subdivision methods in the Bernstein basis; it can be seen as generalization of the univariate continued fraction algorithm or alternatively as a fully analog of Bernstein subdivision in the monomial basis. The representation of the subdivided domains is done through homographies, which allows us to use only integer arithmetic and to treat efficiently unbounded regions. We use univariate bounding functions, projection and preconditionning techniques to reduce the domain of search. The resulting boxes have optimized rational coordinates, corresponding to the first terms of the continued fraction expansion of the real roots. An extension of Vincent's theorem to multivariate polynomials is proved and used for the termination of the algorithm. New complexity bounds are provided for a simplified version of the algorithm. Constructive methods for matrices of multihomogeneous (or multigraded) resultants for unmixed systems have been studied by Weyman, Zelevinsky, Sturmfels, Dickenstein and Emiris. We generalize these constructions to mixed systems, whose Newton polytopes are scaled copies of one polytope, thus taking a step towards systems with arbitrary supports. First, we specify matrices whose determinant equals the resultant and characterize the systems that admit such formulae. Bezout-type determinantal formulae do not exist, but we describe all possible Sylvester-type and hybrid formulae. We establish tight bounds for all corresponding degree vectors, and specify domains that will surely contain such vectors; the latter are new even for the unmixed case. Second, we make use of multiplication tables and strong duality theory to specify resultant matrices explicitly, for a general scaled system, thus including unmixed systems. The encountered matrices are classified; these include a new type of Sylvester-type matrix as well as Bezout-type matrices, known as partial Bezoutians.
