Abstract

The HeRSCheL detector consists of a set of scintillating counters, designed to increase the coverage of the LHCb experiment in the high-rapidity regions on either side of the main spectrometer. The new detector improves the capabilities of LHCb for studies of diffractive interactions, most notably Central Exclusive Production. In this paper the construction, installation, commissioning, and performance of HeRSCheL are presented., Comment: New version to match published text. 5. Prices of flower and resin in cannabis social clubs: Analyses of register data from 220,000 collections

Abstract

Introduction: Cannabis social clubs (CSC) are community-based non-profit organisations that aim to minimise cannabis-related harm for their members. This contribution seeks to: (i) compare the cost of cannabis flower and resin in CSCs to the national average retail price on the illegal market; and (ii) identify possible quantity discounts for cannabis flower and resin distributed to members of CSCs. Methods: Routine data from four CSCs located in Barcelona, Spain, contained information on n = 220,465 collections of cannabis resin and flower (0.01–39 g per collection). The costs for 1 g of cannabis flower and resin per collection were determined. The mean national prices on illicit cannabis were obtained from Spanish police reports. Results: On average, members paid 6.19€ for 1 g flower (median: 6€; interquartile range: 6–7€) and 8.54€ for 1 g resin (median: 7€; interquartile range: 6–9€), with less variations for flower than for resin. Compared to the national average, prices appeared to be higher for cannabis products distributed in CSCs, but comparisons were limited by a lack of data on the variation of national prices. For resin, doubling the quantity was associated with a 20.7% (95% confidence interval 20.4–21.2%; p < 0.001) fee discount. Discussion and conclusions: Cannabis in CSCs may be more costly than the estimated national average for the illicit market. No meaningful price discount could be observed for flower but for resin. Pricing policies pursued by CSCs may help to disincentivise consumption of larger amounts but may also bar socioeconomically disadvantaged users from accessing safer alternatives than the illegal market.

15. Application of low dissipation and dispersion Runge-Kutta schemes to benchmark problems in computational aeroacoustics

We investigate accurate and efficient time advancing methods for computational aeroacoustics, where non-dissipative and non-dispersive properties are of critical importance. Our analysis pertains to the application of Runge-Kutta methods to high-order finite difference discretization. In many CFD applications, multi-stage Runge-Kutta schemes have often been favored for their low storage requirements and relatively large stability limits. For computing acoustic waves, however, the stability consideration alone is not sufficient, since the Runge-Kutta schemes entail both dissipation and dispersion errors. The time step is now limited by the tolerable dissipation and dispersion errors in the computation. In the present paper, it is shown that if the traditional Runge-Kutta schemes are used for time advancing in acoustic problems, time steps greatly smaller than that allowed by the stability limit are necessary. Low Dissipation and Dispersion Runge-Kutta (LDDRK) schemes are proposed, based on an optimization that minimizes the dissipation and dispersion errors for wave propagation. Optimizations of both single-step and two-step alternating schemes are considered. The proposed LDDRK schemes are remarkably more efficient than the classical Runge-Kutta schemes for acoustic computations. Numerical results of each Category of the Benchmark Problems are presented. Moreover, low storage implementations of the optimized schemes are discussed. Special issues of implementing numerical boundary conditions in the LDDRK schemes are also addressed.

18. Cannabis Use in Germany: Frequency, Routes of Administration, and Co-use of Inhaled Nicotine or Tobacco Products.

Abstract

Background: The federal government of Germany is planning to liberalize the recreational cannabis market for adults. We aimed to collect key baseline data on frequency of use, routes of administration, and co-use of cannabis and inhaled nicotine or tobacco products in the population. Methods: Based on data from a national survey of 9644 people aged >14 years, we analyzed self-reported use of cannabis in the past 12 months and preferred route of administration (single choice: smoked with tobacco; smoked without tobacco; inhaled without tobacco; consumed with food; consumed in another form). Results: The prevalence of past-year cannabis use was 4.6% (95% CI [4,2; 5,1%]), with higher rates among 14-24- (11.4%) and 25-39-year-olds (8.2%) as well as among co-users of inhaled nicotine or tobacco products, particularly waterpipe users (27.0%). Smoking cannabis with or without tobacco was the preferred route of administration, reported by 92.4% (95% CI [89,6; 94,6%]). It was most frequently reported by 14-24-year-olds and by co-users of inhaled nicotine or tobacco products. Conclusion: Smoking remains the predominant form of using cannabis--especially among younger users, who are at greatest risk of cannabis-related consequences. The true prevalence of cannabis use may have been underestimated in our study, however, as not all participants answered the questions on cannabis. Nevertheless, preventive and harm reduction efforts are needed to reduce the harm from using cannabis. Abstract

A 77-year-old female patient presenting with recurrent pulmonary embolism and shock had a severe craniocerebral trauma after collapsing at home 2 days before admission. Since systemic thrombolytic therapy appeared hazardous in this patient, percutaneous fragmentation and distal dispersion of the proximal pulmonary emboli was performed using a pigtail catheter. This procedure improved cardiac output immediately by 15%, whereas the mean pulmonary artery pressure dropped only slightly from 48 to 46 mmHg. Thereafter, a streptokinase infusion of 100,000 IU during 1 h was instituted through the pigtail catheter into the pulmonary artery. 12 hours after the treatment was started, cardiac output was raised by 70% and mean pulmonary artery pressure was decreased from 48 to 25 mmHg. 14 days after admission, control ventilation-perfusion scan showed a markedly improved pulmonary perfusion, and right heart catheterization revealed normal right heart pressures. The patient recovered rapidly and there was no evidence of recurrent pulmonary embolism 18 months later. This report demonstrates that a percutaneous catheter fragmentation of proximal pulmonary emboli combined with local intermediate-dose infusion of streptokinase may be a helpful therapeutic option in patients with massive pulmonary embolism in whom systemic thrombolytic therapy is contraindicated.

Abstract

A survey of primary operating zinc smelters worldwide has been undertaken and where possible the results are compared with those of previous surveys in 1985, 1995, 2000 and 2005. The survey provides high-level data from responding operators on plant capacity, feed, roasting, smelting, acid plants, leaching, solution purification, electrolysis, casting, by-products and labour. A database has been compiled and correlations between operating variables examined.
