Internationalisation of the higher education system continues to have a strong impact on national education policies. From an international perspective, learning to teach in globally competent and culturally responsive ways is a core element of teacher education. For this purpose, academically and practice-oriented student teacher exchange programmes have been established. It is often taken for granted that corresponding internships abroad offer positive learning experiences, but research shows that these expectations are frequently not met. This paper, hermeneutics therefore, investigates if and how learning takes place in multi-week international internships, what shapes, enables, limits or obstructs this learning. The investigation is based on a qualitative-hermeneutic approach with data collected from group discussions and analysed according to the documentary method. The analyses led to two 'ideal types': the first is based on learning from contrasts and includes sub-types in which the student teachers' perceptions and interpretations are differentiated or distanced to a greater or lesser extent. The second ideal type, in which learning takes place through challenges, is also divided into sub-types which differ in the degree of self-efficacy experienced by the students. The paper concludes with some suggestions on how pre-service teachers can be supported so that the learning potential of their internships can be exploited more fully.

Introduction: Hypertension is the leading risk factor for morbidity and mortality throughout the world and is pervasive in United States emergency departments (ED). This study documents the point prevalence of subclinical heart disease in emergency patients with asymptomatic hypertension.Method: This was a prospective observational study of ED patients with asymptomatic hypertension conducted at two urban academic EDs that belong to an eight-hospital healthcare organization in New York. Adult (≥18 years of age) English- or Spanish-speaking patients who had an initial blood pressure (BP) ≥160/100 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and second BP ≥140/90 mm Hg, and pending discharge, were invited to participate in the study. We excluded patients with congestive heart failure, renal insufficiency, and atrial fibrillation, or who were pregnant, a prisoner, cognitively unable to provide informed consent, or experiencing symptoms of hypertension. We assessed echocardiographic evidence of subclinical heart disease (left ventricular hypertrophy, and diastolic and systolic dysfunction).Results: A total of 53 patients were included in the study; a majority were young (mean 49.5 years old,[SD 14–52]), self-identified as Black or Other (n = 39; 73.5%), and female (n = 30; 56.6%). Mean initial blood pressure was 172/100 mm Hg, and 24 patients (45.3%) self-reported a history of hypertension. Fifty patients completed an echocardiogram. All (100%) had evidence of subclinical heart disease, with 41 (77.4%) displaying left ventricular hypertrophy and 31 (58.5%) diastolic dysfunction. There was a significant relationship between diastolic dysfunction and female gender [x2 (1, n = 53) = 3.98; P = 0.046]; Black or other race [x2 (3, n = 53) = 9.138; P = 0.03] and Hispanic or other ethnicity [x2 (2, n = 53) = 8.03; P = 0.02]. Less than one third of patients demonstrated systolic dysfunction on echocardiogram, and this was more likely to occur in patients with diabetes mellitus [x2 (1, n = 51) = 4.84; P = 0.02].Conclusion: There is a high probability that Black, Hispanic, and female patients with asymptomatic hypertension are on the continuum for developing overt heart failure. Emergency clinicians should provide individualized care that considers their unique health needs, cultural backgrounds, and social determinants of health.

This research sheds light on the different basic orientations that teachers have regarding migration-related diversity and the ways in which these orientations are shaped by life stories and social contexts. “Basic orientation” refers to what Bohnsack calls an “orientation framework” in terms of the incorporated patterns of thought and action that build the modus operandi of an individual, which is continuously constituted through the interplay of individual and collective spaces of experience. The research is pursued with the qualitative-hermeneutic approach of the “documentary method” and with data generation through biographic-narrative interviews. The sample comprises 38 primary school teachers in German-speaking Switzerland. The analyses identify a typology with five type structures. Examining them with a structure approach from professionalisation theory, they can be interpreted as more or less professionalised – one of the hinges being the question of whether the teachers are able to decentralise perspectives and include the experience of not-knowing instead of stereotyping others. Another hinge is the question of how teachers experience their own recognition, which is reflected against the theory of recognition.

Abstract Methods to grow large crystals provide the foundation for material science and technology. Here we demonstrate single crystal homoepitaxy of a metal-organic framework (MOF) built of zinc, acetate and terephthalate ions, that encapsulate arrays of octahedral zinc dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) complex cations within its one-dimensional (1D) channels. The three-dimensional framework is built of two-dimensional Zn-terephthalate square lattices interconnected by anionic acetate pillars through diatomic zinc nodes. The charge of the anionic framework is neutralized by the 1D arrays of $${{\rm{Zn}}}{({{\rm{DMSO}}})}_{6}^{2+}$$ Zn ( DMSO ) 6 2 + cations that fill every second 1D channel of the framework. It is demonstrated that the repeatable and scalable epitaxy allows square cuboids of this charge-transfer MOF to grow stepwise to sizes in the centimeter range. The continuous growth with no size limits can be attributed to the ionic nature of the anionic framework with cationic 1D molecular fillers. These findings pave the way for epitaxial growth of bulk crystals of MOFs.

Background: Collaborative practice between therapists and parents is a key element of family-centred care and is essential if we want to address family priorities and needs in interventions. However, collaborative practice is challenging for speech and language therapists (SLTs) and parents. To facilitate collaboration, collaborative practices need to be implemented into speech and language therapy for young children with developmental language disorders (DLD) and their families. Actual change and implementation of collaboration in practice will be successful only when it corresponds with patients' needs, in our case the needs of parents of young children with DLD. Aims: To explore parents' needs in their collaboration with SLTs during therapy for their young child with DLD. Methods & Procedures: Parents of children with (a risk of) DLD in the age of 2-6 years were eligible for participation. We recruited parents via SLTs. Twelve parents of children with DLD participated in semi-structured interviews about their needs in collaboration with SLTs. We used a phenomenological approach focusing on parents' lived experiences. We transcribed the interviews verbatim. All interviews were read/listened to and discussed by our parent panel, multiple researchers and the interviewer. Two researchers independently analysed the data using the reflective thematic analysis of Braun and Clarke. Outcomes & Results: The analysis of the interviews resulted in six themes: (1) knowing what to expect, (2) knowing how to contribute, (3) feeling capable of supporting the child, (4) trusting the therapist, (5) alignment with parents and children's needs, preferences and priorities and (6) time and space for asking questions and sharing information. Conclusions & Implications: Parents want SLTs to invest time in collaborating with them. Parents need SLTs to empower them to become a collaborative partner and enable them to support their child in daily life. Parents need knowledge about the therapy process and diagnosis and skills in how to support their child's language development. Also, they need emotional support to feel secure enough to support their child, to ask questions to therapists and to bring up their own thoughts and opinions in therapy. Parents' needs are in line with collaborative working as described in literature, which underlines the importance of implementing collaborative working in speech and language therapy for young children with DLD.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a prototypical autoimmune disease that causes joint inflammation and destruction1. There is currently no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, and the effectiveness of treatments varies across patients, suggesting an undefined pathogenic diversity1,2. Here, to deconstruct the cell states and pathways that characterize this pathogenic heterogeneity, we profiled the full spectrum of cells in inflamed synovium from patients with rheumatoid arthritis. We used multi-modal single-cell RNA-sequencing and surface protein data coupled with histology of synovial tissue from 79 donors to build single-cell atlas of rheumatoid arthritis synovial tissue that includes more than 314,000 cells. We stratified tissues into six groups, referred to as cell-type abundance phenotypes (CTAPs), each characterized by selectively enriched cell states. These CTAPs demonstrate the diversity of synovial inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis, ranging from samples enriched for T and B cells to those largely lacking lymphocytes. Disease-relevant cell states, cytokines, risk genes, histology and serology metrics are associated with particular CTAPs. CTAPs are dynamic and can predict treatment response, highlighting the clinical utility of classifying rheumatoid arthritis synovial phenotypes. This comprehensive atlas and molecular, tissue-based stratification of rheumatoid arthritis synovial tissue reveal new insights into rheumatoid arthritis pathology and heterogeneity that could inform novel targeted treatments.

Abstract Purpose This study investigated potential use of computed tomography (CT)-based parameters in the lumbar spine as a surrogate for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based findings. Methods In this retrospective study, all individuals, who had a lumbar spine CT scan and MRI between 2006 and 2012 were reviewed (n = 198). Disc height (DH) and endplate degeneration (ED) were evaluated between Th12/L1-L5/S1. Statistics consisted of Spearman correlation and univariate/multivariable regression (adjusting for age and gender). Results The mean CT-DH increased kranio-caudally (8.04 millimeters (mm) at T12/L1, 9.17 mm at L1/2, 10.59 mm at L2/3, 11.34 mm at L3/4, 11.42 mm at L4/5 and 10.47 mm at L5/S1). While the medical field in the United States is renowned for research and innovation, with large numbers of world-class healthcare facilities and cutting-edge technologies, inequities in overall health outcomes demonstrate pronounced disparities in accessing care. This article addresses increasing provider diversity and cultural humility as critical steps in ensuring advancements are made to equitable care under the current confines of the American healthcare system. Increasing diversity amongst medical providers starts before students begin applying to medical school. Critical strategies are needed at the K-12 level to ensure early exposure to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Research demonstrates that early exposure to STEM can positively impact children's interest, confidence, and pursuit of STEM careers, including medicine. Early exposure to STEM can increase engagement and motivation in STEM subjects particularly for girls and racially marginalized groups.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is marked by insulin resistance, low grade chronic inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. Vitamin K2, especially menaquinone-7 (MK-7), might delay T2DM progression and alleviate its consequences. Hence, this study evaluated the effects of MK-7 on serum and urine markers of diabetes in an animal model of T2DM. Methods: Hetero- (fa/+, control) and homozygous (fa/fa, diabetic) male Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats were supplemented or not with MK-7 for 12 weeks. After euthanasia, vitamin K1, menaquinone-4 and MK-7 serum concentrations were analyzed via reversed phase high pressure liquid chromatography. Glucose (serum), fructosamine (serum) and creatinine (serum and urine) levels were assessed photometrically, serum cystatin C and urinary total protein were turbidimetrically determined. Serum transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) and procollagen type III N-terminal peptide (PIIINP) were quantified with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Urinary marker proteins were analyzed via sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Nephropathy was assessed histologically. Results: Supplementation led to significantly elevated MK-7 serum levels and a significant reduction of PIIINP serum levels in both hetero- and homozygous ZDF rats. Additionally, not statistically significant reductions of TGF-β1 serum levels, proteinuria as well as the nephropathy score were observed. In vivo body mass, serum fructosamine, glucose, cystatin C and creatinine levels were unaffected. Conclusion: MK-7 reduced serum markers of fibrosis, histological features of nephropathy and urinary protein excretion, but failed to affect serum markers of T2DM. The therapeutic potential of MK-7 in T2DM and its mode of action should be further investigated in more detail.

Background We sought to identify what barriers and facilitators determine current perceived access to childhood cancer care in South Africa through in-depth interviews with stakeholders in South Africa’s public and private sectors.Methods Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 29 key health system stakeholders, including policy-makers and regulators, medical insurance scheme informants, medicine suppliers, healthcare providers and civil society stakeholders. Identified barriers and facilitators in access to medicines and broader care were structured according to the pharmaceutical value chain (PVC).Results Barriers and facilitators were identified across all components of the PVC. Key barriers included (1) a lack of political commitment to childhood cancers, (2) discontinuation of essential chemotherapeutics, (3) incomplete insurance coverage for childhood cancers, (4) stock-outs of essential medicines, (5) the inability to access care, including travel to healthcare facilities and (6) low awareness on childhood cancers among primary healthcare (PHC) workers. Proposed priority interventions included pricing flexibilities, increased transparency and consistency in decision-making and healthcare spending, and improved training of PHC staff, nurses and pharmacists on childhood cancers.Conclusion This first comprehensive study of determinants of access to medicines used in childhood cancer in South Africa provides context-specific evidence for targeted policy development.

ABSTRACTBackground This study explored the treatment-related, financial and psychological experiences of caregivers during cancer treatment of their children in South Africa’s (SA) public and private sectors.Methods In this exploratory study, three focus groups were conducted with caregivers of children undergoing cancer treatment in SA’s public healthcare sector. A fourth small focus group with two parents in the private sector was conducted online. A mixed-methods approach was employed using a combination of thematic analysis and grounded theory.Results Of the 20 public sector caregivers, many expressed frustration at the number of visits to primary healthcare clinics before being referred. Caregivers had difficulties coping with and accepting the diagnosis, alongside managing continued care for the child and other children at home. Support received by family and community members was varied. Financial strain was an important concern. The two private sector parents indicated greater levels of support and no financial hardship, but expressed similar levels of emotional stress.Conclusion These caregiver experiences indicate that improvements are urgently needed in the recognition of childhood cancer symptoms at primary healthcare level in SA. They also highlight a need for increased financial support from government through social grants, travel allowances and nutritional support.

Background: The WHO Essential Medicine List for Children was released on the 30th anniversary of the general Essential Medicine List in 2007, to recognise special needs for medicines in children, and to promote the inclusion of paediatric medicines in national procurement programmes. This study aimed to investigate the alignment of the medicines included in the Albanian reimbursement medicines list of the Mandatory Healthcare Insurance Fund (AMHIF) and the Essential Medicine List for Children. Methods: A quantitative evaluation was performed to compare the paediatric medicines included in the 2022 list of the AMHIF and the 2021 WHO Essential Medicine List for Children. In addition, vaccines in the Albanian vaccination programmes for children were compared to the ones listed on the WHO Essential Medicine List for Children. Results: Both lists had a total of 284 active ingredients in common, whereas 14 of 24 vaccines were found to be in common in the Essential Medicine List for Children list and the Albanian vaccination programmes. Conclusions: This is the first study in Albania to investigate the alignment of the WHO EMLc and AMHIF list. In case of the same active ingredient there were many deviations in terms of dosage form, strength and indication.

Summary: Background: Yellow fever (YF), a mosquito-borne acute viral haemorrhagic illness, is endemic to many tropical and subtropical areas of Africa and Central and South America. Vaccination remains the most effective prevention strategy; however, as repeated outbreaks have exhausted vaccine stockpiles, there is a need for improved YF vaccines to meet global demand. A live-attenuated YF vaccine candidate (referred to as vYF) cloned from a YF-17D vaccine (YF-VAX®) sub-strain, adapted for growth in Vero cells cultured in serum-free media, is in clinical development. We report the innate and adaptive immune responses and the transcriptome profile of selected genes induced by vYF. Methods: Healthy adults aged 18–60 years were randomised at a 1:1:1:1 ratio to receive one dose of vYF at 4, 5 or 6 Log CCID50 or YF-VAX (reference vaccine), administered subcutaneously in the upper arm (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT04142086). Blood/serum samples were obtained at scheduled time points through 180 days (D180) post-vaccination. The surrogate endpoints assessed were: serum cytokine/chemokine concentrations, measured by bead-based Multiplex assay; peripheral blood vYF-specific IgG and IgM memory B cell frequencies, measured by FluoroSpot assay; and expression of genes involved in the immune response to YF-17D vaccination by RT-qPCR. Findings: There was no increase in any of the cytokine/chemokine concentrations assessed through D14 following vaccination with vYF or YF-VAX, except for a slight increase in IP-10 (CXCL10) levels. The gene expression profiles and kinetics following vaccination with vYF and YF-VAX were similar, inclusive of innate (antiviral responses [type-1 interferon, IFN signal transduction; interferon-stimulated genes], activated dendritic cells, viral sensing pattern recognition receptors) and adaptive (cell division in stimulated CD4+ T cells, B cell and antibody) immune signatures, which peaked at D7 and D14, respectively. Increases in vYF-specific IgG and IgM memory B cell frequencies at D28 and D180 were similar across the study groups. Interpretation: vYF-induced strong innate and adaptive immune responses comparable to those induced by YF-VAX, with similar transcriptomic and kinetic profiles observed. Funding: Sanofi.

Abstract This study aims to correlate adaptive optics-transscleral flood illumination (AO-TFI) images of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) with standard clinical images and compare cell morphological features with those of healthy eyes. After stitching 125 AO-TFI images acquired in CSCR eyes (including 6 active CSCR, 15 resolved CSCR, and 3 from healthy contralateral), 24 montages were correlated with blue-autofluorescence, infrared and optical coherence tomography images. All 68 AO-TFI images acquired in pathological areas exhibited significant RPE contrast changes. Among the 52 healthy areas in clinical images, AO-TFI revealed a normal RPE mosaic in 62% of the images and an altered RPE pattern in 38% of the images. Morphological features of the RPE cells were quantified in 54 AO-TFI images depicting clinically normal areas (from 12 CSCR eyes). Comparison with data from 149 AO-TFI images acquired in 33 healthy eyes revealed significantly increased morphological heterogeneity. In CSCR, AO-TFI not only enabled high-resolution imaging of outer retinal alterations, but also revealed RPE abnormalities undetectable by all other imaging modalities. Further studies are required to estimate the prognosis value of these abnormalities. Imaging of the RPE using AO-TFI holds great promise for improving our understanding of the CSCR pathogenesis.

Abstract Objective Despite global recognition that access to medicines is shaped by various interacting processes within a health system, a suitable analytical framework for identifying barriers and facilitators from a system’s perspective was needed. We propose a framework specifically designed to find drivers to access to medicines from a country’s health system perspective. This framework could enable the systematic evaluation of access across countries, disease areas and populations and facilitate targeted policy development. This framework is the byproduct of a larger study on the barriers and facilitators to childhood oncology medicines in South Africa. Results Eight core (pharmaceutical) functional processes were identified from existing frameworks: (I) medicine regulation, (II) public financing and pricing, (III) selection, (IV) reimbursement, (V) procurement and supply, (VI) healthcare delivery, (VII) dispensing and (VIII) use. National contextual components included policy and legislation and health information systems. To emphasize the interlinkage of processes, the proposed framework was structured as a pharmaceutical value chain. This framework focusses on national processes that are within a country’s control as opposed to global factors, and functional mechanisms versus a country’s performance or policy objectives. Further refinement and validation of the framework following application in other contexts is encouraged.

Abstract Background Access to anaesthesia and surgical care is a major problem for people living in Sub-Saharan Africa. In this region, ketamine is critical for the provision of anaesthesia care. However, efforts to control ketamine internationally as a controlled substance may significantly impact its accessibility. This research therefore aims to estimate the importance of ketamine for anaesthesia and surgical care in Sub-Saharan Africa and assess the potential impact on access to ketamine if it were to be scheduled. Methods This research is a mixed-methods study, comprising of a cross-sectional survey at the hospital level in Rwanda, and key informant interviews with experts on anaesthesia care in Sub-Saharan Africa. Data on availability of four anaesthetic agents were collected from hospitals (n = 54) in Rwanda. Semi-structured interviews with 10 key informants were conducted, collecting information on the importance of ketamine, the potential impact of scheduling ketamine internationally, and opinions on misuse of ketamine. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using a thematic analysis approach. Results The survey conducted in Rwanda found that availability of ketamine and propofol was comparable at around 80%, while thiopental and inhalational agents were available at only about half of the hospitals. Significant barriers impeding access to anaesthesia care were identified, including a general lack of attention given to the specialty by governments, a shortage of anaesthesiologists and migration of trained anaesthesiologists, and a scarcity of medicines and equipment. Ketamine was described as critical for the provision of anaesthesia care as a consequence of these barriers. Misuse of ketamine was not believed to be an issue by the informants. Conclusion Ketamine is critical for the provision of anaesthesia care in Sub-Saharan Africa, and its scheduling would have a significantly negative impact on its availability for anaesthesia care.

Abstract Background The optimal management of COVID-19 symptoms and their sequelae remains an important area of clinical research. Policy makers have little scientific data regarding the effects on the daily life of affected individuals and the identification of their needs. Such data are needed to inform effective care policy. Methods We studied 639 people with COVID-19 resident in France via an online questionnaire. They reported their symptoms, effects on daily life, and resulting needs, with particular focus on olfaction. Results The results indicate that a majority of participants viewed their symptoms as disabling, with symptoms affecting their physical and mental health, social and professional lives. 60% of the individuals reported having unmet medical, psychological and socio-professional support needs. Finally, affected individuals were concerned about the risk and invasiveness of possible treatments as shown by a preference for non-invasive intervention over surgery to cure anosmia. Conclusions It is important that policy makers take these needs into consideration in order to assist affected individuals to regain a normal quality of life.

BackgroundEarly identification is critical for mitigating the impact of medicine shortages on patients. The internet, specifically social media, is an emerging source of health data. ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore whether a routine analysis of data from the Twitter social network can detect signals of a medicine shortage and serve as an early warning system and, if so, for which medicines or patient groups. MethodsMedicine shortages between January 31 and December 1, 2019, were collected from the Dutch pharmacists’ society’s national catalog Royal Dutch Pharmacists Association (KNMP) Farmanco. Posts on these shortages were collected by searching for the name, the active pharmaceutical ingredient, or the first word of the brand name of the medicines in shortage. Posts were then selected based on relevant keywords that potentially indicated a shortage and the percentage of shortages with at least 1 post was calculated. The first posts per shortage were analyzed for their timing (median number of days, including the IQR) versus the national catalog, also stratified by disease and medicine characteristics. The content of the first post per shortage was analyzed descriptively for its reporting stakeholder and the nature of the post. ResultsOf the 341 medicine shortages, 102 (29.9%) were mentioned on Twitter. Of these 102 shortages, 18 (5.3% of the total) were mentioned prior to or simultaneous to publication by KNMP Farmanco. Only 4 (1.2%) of these were mentioned on Twitter more than 14 days before. On average, posts were published with a median delay of 37 (IQR 7-81) days to publication by KNMP Farmanco. Shortages mentioned on Twitter affected a greater number of patients and lasted longer than those that were not mentioned. We could not conclusively relate either the presence or absence on Twitter to a disease area or route of administration of the medicine in shortage. The first posts on the 102 shortages were mainly published by patients (n=51, 50.0%) and health care professionals (n=46, 45.1%). We identified 8 categories of nature of content. Sharing personal experience (n=44, 43.1%) was the most common category. ConclusionsThe Twitter social network is not a suitable early warning system for medicine shortages. Twitter primarily echoes already-known information rather than spreads new information. However, Twitter or potentially any other social media platform provides the opportunity for future qualitative research in the increasingly important field of medicine shortages that investigates how a larger population of patients is affected by shortages.

Currents and pressure records from the DeepLev mooring station and drifter data in the eastern Levantine Basin were analyzed to identify the dominant tidal constituents and their seasonal and depth variability. Harmonic and spectral analysis of seasonal segments of currents and pressure reveal key attributes of the tidal regime: (1) dominant semidiurnal sea level variability; (2) seasonal variation of semidiurnal and diurnal tides in both currents and pressure datasets; and (3) significant diurnal currents with weak semidiurnal currents across all seasons. The most dominant tidal constituent from the pressure dataset is the M2 (12.4 h). Results from pressure datasets align with previous models and observations of semidiurnal tides. In contrast, the diurnal tides are larger than previously reported by 8—9 cm in the winter and 1—2 cm in the summer. The surface current tidal regime differs from prior reports in the eastern Levantine Basin, with M2 magnitudes weaker by 1 cm s-1, while the diurnal tides (K1, O1) are 1—2 cm s-1 larger. Seasonal segments showed seasonal differences in the local tidal regime’s amplitudes. The most pronounced seasonal differences were with the K1 and S2 tides, with differences between winter and fall of 7 cm for the K1 and 4 cm between summer and fall for the S2. We utilized the DeepLev datasets to compare a moored device with surface drifters near DeepLev by analyzing the M2 and S2 tides. Additionally, we examined data at different dataset lengths, considering the time constraints needed to resolve the tides adequately. Longer datasets improved the resolution of the tidal analysis and reduced amplitude leakages from nearby frequencies, resulting in a more realistic and accurate analysis of the tidal currents. Conversely, longer datasets resulted in fewer drifters remaining our study region for the allotted dataset length. From 32 available segments in 15 day dataset to 7 with a 30 day dataset, reducing the effectiveness of drifters as a local tidal research tool.

Abstract Redox‐active materials that exhibit both electrochromism and electrofluorochromism have great potential as multifunctional elements in optoelectronics. Here, in situ spectroelectrochemistry is presented on NU‐1000, a zirconium pyrenetetrabenzoate metal–organic framework. A thin film of NU‐1000 exhibits reversible color changes between light yellow and dark blue when subjected to an alternating electrochemical potential. In situ fluorescence excitation‐emission spectral mapping elucidates a dominant blue emission of highly fluorescent electrochromic NU‐1000 that is being quenched via an oxidation reaction. Density‐functional theory calculations reveal the forbidden optical transition between the singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) in the oxidized linker as the cause of the quenching. Double potential step chronoamperometry measures response times as fast as a dozen seconds and excellent switching stability over 500 cycles without noticeable attenuation of the color contrast. These findings provide valuable insight into the electrochromism and electrofluorochromism in metal–organic frameworks, offering exciting opportunities for developing advanced multifunctional porous materials with potential applications in optoelectronics and sensing.

To ensure the sustainability of pharmacy practice and provide health for all, pharmacy as a profession must embrace the digital transformation that has been changing healthcare at a rapid pace. The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) has conducted a global study on digital health in pharmacy education to describe the readiness, adaptability, and responsiveness of pharmacy education programmes to train the current and future pharmaceutical workforce on digital health and to identify the knowledge and skill gaps of the existing pharmaceutical workforce with regard to digital health. An online survey was distributed to collect feedback from academics, pharmacy schools, pharmacists, and pharmacy students. The findings showed that a large proportion of pharmacy schools do not offer any digital health education, and the skillsets and knowledge of how to apply digital health technologies to solve existing clinical problems and improve care have been identified as a gap. The future of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences is digital and exciting. A digitally enabled and agile pharmaceutical workforce will capitalise on the benefits of digital health to serve the higher purpose of providing good health and wellbeing for all, leaving no one behind. Therefore, pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences education should act now.
