Abstract

The main research efforts are aimed at finding inexpensive materials that can be converted into nanostructured carbon-containing materials, such as activated carbon and graphene. Rice husks are one such material, especially in developing countries, where more than 95% of Rice husks are produced worldwide. Although numerous studies have been conducted on the production of activated carbon and graphene structures from Rice husk, the existing scientific information is still widely scattered in the literature. Therefore, this review article provides extensive information on made by various researchers, including the Institute of combustion problems (Almaty, Kazakhstan), regarding the production of nanostructured carbon-containing materials from rice husk and its adsorption characteristics. The properties and pre-treatment of rice husk in relation to the production of activated carbon and multilayer graphene are discussed. Abstract

The photonic density of states (PDS) of the eigen polarizations (EPs) in cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) cells are calculated. The exact analytic expressions for the reflection and transmission matrices for the finite thickness CLC layer are used. We obtained the dependences for the PDS on the parameters characterizing absorption and gain, as well as the CLC cell thickness, CLC local dielectric anisotropy and refractive index of CLC layer surrounding. The possibility of connections between the PDS and the density of the light energy accumulated in the medium are investigated and it was shown that these characteristics have analogous spectra and, besides, the influences of the problem parameters on these characteristics also were analogous. We have shown, that the decrement of the refractive index of CLC layer surroundings leads to a sharp increase of the maximum PDS and, consequently, leads to a sharp decrement of the laser excitation threshold. The PDS dependence on the refraction coefficients of the substrates of the Fabry-Perot resonator filled with a CLC planar layer was investigated, too. Abstract

SrTiO3-based photocatalysts have become widely used due to their excellent properties such as high thermal stability, photocorrosion resistance, and stable structure that can be modified by doping and making composites. In this work, SrTiO3 powder was prepared from Sr(NO3)2 and TiO2 precursors by a simple chemical precipitation method followed by calcination. It was determined that calcination at 900 °C followed by treatment in nitric acid solution produced cubic SrTiO3 particles without the presence of any impurities. In addition, structural, morphology, and energetic characterization using experimental and theoretical aspects are presented. Within the framework of density functional theory, the electronic properties of SrTiO3 have been investigated in the Quantum ESPRESSO software package using the PBE functional under the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Abstract

Recent advances in the development of lithium-sulfur batteries (Li-S) demonstrated their high effectiveness owing to their tremendous theoretical specific capacity and high theoretical gravimetrical energy. Nevertheless, the potential commercialization of Li-S is significantly held by the insulating nature of sulfur and complicated RedOx reactions during the electrochemical charge-discharge processes. This paper presents nickel nanoparticles embedded carbon nanofibers interlayer (Ni@CNF) between a cathode and a separator as an additional physical barrier against lithium polysulfides shuttle for their efficient conversion during the charge-discharge cycling. Furthermore, the interlayer provides an auxiliary electron pathway with subsequent lowering of the charge transfer resistance. The electrochemical analysis of a Li-S cell with the Ni@CNF interlayer demonstrated high initial discharge capacities of 1441.2 mAh g-1 and 1194.2 mAh g-1 at 0.1 and 1.0 C rates, respectively, with remarkable capacity retention of ~83% after 100 cycles. This study revealed the advantageous impact of Ni@CNF towards solving the major issues of lithiumsulfur batteries, i.e., sluggish kinetics and the shuttle effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this study, carbonized apricot stones and rice husk were utilized as feedstock for the synthesis of CuO-loaded carbonized sorbents for the removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) from gas mixtures. The specific surface area of carbonized sorbents increased with increasing carbonization temperature, resulting in a porous structure with enhanced sorption capacity. The presence of pores and the development of porosity in the sorbents were confirmed by SEM images. CuO nanoparticles were well-dispersed on the surface of carbonized sorbents, and the particle sizes were between 60-100 nm. Chemical interactions between acidic carbon dioxide and basic copper oxide led to improved adsorption properties. The sorption characteristics of the carbonized sorbents were studied under dynamic conditions, and the results showed that CuO-loaded carbonized apricot stones and rice husk had the maximum sorption capacity for CO2, with efficiencies of 98% and 91%, respectively. These findings indicate that carbonized apricot stones and rice husk can be utilized as low-cost and eco-friendly feedstock for the production of efficient CO2 sorbents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
