3. Extending the Unmixing methods to Multispectral Images

Abstract

In the past few decades, there has been intensive research concerning the Unmixing of hyperspectral images. Some methods such as NMF, VCA, and N-FINDR have become standards since they show robustness in dealing with the unmixing of hyperspectral images. However, the research concerning the unmixing of multispectral images is relatively scarce. Thus, we extend some unmixing methods to the multispectral images. In this paper, we have created two simulated multispectral datasets from two hyperspectral datasets whose ground truths are given. Then we apply the unmixing methods (VCA, NMF, N-FINDR) to these two datasets. By comparing and analyzing the results, we have been able to demonstrate some interesting results for the utilization of VCA, NMF, and N-FINDR with multispectral datasets. Abstract

This paper describes the application of a novel supervisedsegmentation technique used for conservation documentationbased on visible appearance changes of Cultural Heritage (CH)metal surfaces. The technique employs a linear discriminantanalysis model to classify Reflectance Transformation Imaging(RTI) reconstruction coefficients. The Hemispherical Harmonics(HSH) reconstruction coefficients for each pixel are first calculatedand then normalized. This normalization enhances therobustness and invariance of the application, making it possibleto apply it for documenting different surfaces at different timeintervals. This paper presents three cases related to surfaceappearance changes due to corrosion that provokes low or hightopographic changes. Tarnishing of silver and filiform corrosionon steel are examined. For each case study, a superviseddata set is constructed, teaching the algorithm to recognize asdistinct a specified appearance characteristic (such as corrosion,metal, etc.) by comparing it to the reconstruction coefficientsof each pixel through Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Asimplified color map visualizes the segmented information. Thecalculated results are afterward verified by visible inspectionfrom conservation-restoration experts. The method can segment surfaces with changes in micro-geometry, creating accuratecartographies of the object’s condition. However, limitations aremet on surfaces with minimal topography and high specularity.&nbsp

Abstract

Silver tarnish manifests by changes in the optical properties of the material. Documenting these changes creates many challenges for imaging techniques. This paper proposes a methodological approach based on processing Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) data for tracking multi-temporal changes on such surfaces. Through the statistical analysis of the surface's angular reflectance, information related to the appearance attributes can be evaluated and visualized by maps. Thus, this paper explores the global surface change of the reflectance response of silver tarnishing as a function of time. A qualitative and semi-quantitative evaluation is based on multivariate distance measurements at different time intervals. The results are compared to surface change evaluation by visual inspection, photographic documentation, and colourimetry, practices traditionally used in conservation documentation to monitor surface changes over time. The outcome of this research illustrates the possibilities of RTI data analysis as a tool for accurate multi-temporal documentation of the optical properties changes on specular surfaces.
