1. Generative Diffusion-based Downscaling for Climate

Abstract

Downscaling, or super-resolution, provides decision-makers with detailed, high-resolution information about the potential risks and impacts of climate change, based on climate model output. Machine learning algorithms are proving themselves to be efficient and accurate approaches to downscaling. Here, we show how a generative, diffusion-based approach to downscaling gives accurate downscaled results. We focus on an idealised setting where we recover ERA5 at $0.25\degree$~resolution from coarse grained version at $2\degree$~resolution. The diffusion-based method provides superior accuracy compared to a standard U-Net, particularly at the fine scales, as highlighted by a spectral decomposition. Additionally, the generative approach provides users with a probability distribution which can be used for risk assessment. This research highlights the potential of diffusion-based downscaling techniques in providing reliable and detailed climate predictions.

5. Machine learning, emulation and Bayesian dimension reduction for climate change projection

Abstract

Climate change projection under different greenhouse gas and aerosol emission scenarios is crucial for informing societal adaptation and mitigation measures. This traditionally relies on computationally expensive global climate models (GCMs) run on decadal to centennial timescales. One of the goals of this thesis is in exploring machine learning models and emulators trained on the output of global climate models, that can assist in this endeavour by providing rapid estimations of the climate response. Two statistical models are developed, one of which emulates the global short-term climate response to an emissions perturbation and one which learns the mapping from the short-term climate response to the long-term climate response. Different perspectives are taken so that the short-term response is predicted with a probabilistic emulator which interpolates between known and unknown data points, while the global patterns of long-term response are predicted with machine learning methods. Both models are shown to accelerate climate change projections and also provide new insights into the main drivers of climate change through sensitivity analysis to different emission perturbations and by uncovering consistent early indicators of long-term climate response. Discovering structures in climate data that can explain patterns and behaviour is another focus of this thesis, addressed through a dimension reduction technique to simplify large datasets. This is approached from a Bayesian perspective which could allow a complete quantification of uncertainty when making predictions through an emulator trained on a reduced dataset. Reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo and Sequential Monte Carlo algorithms are developed for a latent factor model to infer the probability distribution on both the number of underlying dimensions and the structure of these. Sequential Monte Carlo is found to be significantly more effective at determining these and is demonstrated on weather observations to reveal underlying factors governing the weather behaviour.

11. The island as a model for the interpretation and development of exhibitions of contemporary art beyond a gallery setting

Abstract

The written thesis is presented in conjunction with a documented body of curatorial practice that together seek to examine and develop a proposed notion of ‘the island’ as a conceptual model for the staging and analysis of exhibitions of art beyond a gallery setting. The initial conception of ‘the island’ as model follows from a discussion of the function of the setting of islands in literature that identifies and abstracts their unique spatial and structural properties before reapplying them in a different context. On both a practical and discursive level, the ensuing research arrives at a thesis that puts forward the island model as an innovative and productive tool for contemporary curatorial practice. The initial research presents the literary island as a contained site where subversive, fantastical or critical alternatives to a dominant norm are enacted. Appearing unexpectedly through the event of storm, shipwreck or loss at sea, the literary island interrupts the intended trajectory of the castaway who finds himself severed from the customs and routines associated with a homeland. In doing so, the setting of the island in literature often comes to figure as a test-site for new possibilities upon which a blurring between the real and the imaginary readily occurs. Retaining the identified properties of the literary island but divorcing it from its geographical setting, the proposed notion of the island as curatorial model conceives a space located within, yet always at the slightest remove from, the everyday itself – disrupting the familiar to facilitate a playful or subversive alternative to the status quo. Here, the structural effect of the island no longer depends on its physical distance to a ‘mainland’, but describes a spatial practice that facilitates a process of distancing from familiar norms. Occurring outside of the confines of a gallery, the presented curatorial practice stages artworks that are physically situated within a given location whilst simultaneously providing an experience of the virtual possibilities for its transformation. In so doing, the thesis argues, these and similar artworks invite a re-imagination of familiar and everyday culture by blurring the distinction between the real and the imaginary in a manner that reflects - and can thus be productively modelled upon - the function of the literary island. In proposing an alternative strategy for the discussion and development of curatorial practices beyond the gallery, as well as putting into play a new mode of analysis and an innovative space of discourse, the thesis presents an original framework for contemporary curatorial practice.

Abstract

The climate model hierarchy encompasses models of varying complexity along different axes, ranging from idealized models that elegantly describe isolated mechanisms to fully coupled Earth system models that aspire to provide useable climate projections. Based on the second Model Hierarchies Workshop, which took place in 2022, we present perspectives on how this field has evolved since the first Model Hierarchies Workshop in 2016. In this period, we have witnessed a dramatic increase in the use of (a) machine learning in climate modeling and (b) climate models to estimate risks and influence decision making under climate change. Here, we discuss the implications of these growing areas of research and how we expect them to become integrated into the model hierarchies framework. Plain Language Summary: The climate modeling community often describes the variety of models used to understand and simulate climate processes as a hierarchy in complexity. Simple idealized models exist at the bottom of the hierarchy and are useful for explaining underlying physics, while fully coupled Earth system models exist at the top of the hierarchy and aim to provide useable climate projections. We present perspectives on how the model hierarchy field is evolving, focusing on two noticeable changes in recent years. Firstly, models are increasingly using machine learning, and secondly, there has been a growing interest in the usability of climate models, for instance, for estimating risks associated with climate change. Abstract

While research acknowledges the impact the rapid growth in mobile technology is having on the field of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), little has been done to investigate the impact this development has had on assessment practices for matching an individual with the appropriate technology. The purpose of this descriptive and causal-comparative research study was to gather demographic and descriptive data on mobile technology as AAC and to investigate the quality of transdisciplinary teamwork assessment practices as evaluated by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) for the provision of mobile technologies as AAC devices across SLP practice settings. A random sample of 60 SLPs in each of the three practice settings of education, health care, and private practice completed a survey containing demographic questions and the Team Decision Making Questionnaire (TDMQ). Proposed data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics and an ANOVA. Due to a violation of homogeneity, a Welch's ANOVA was conducted with post hoc testing. A statistically significant difference between SLP ratings of the quality of transdisciplinary assessment practices for mobile technology as AAC was discovered between education and health care settings as well as between education and private practice settings. This difference was significant across all subscales of the TDMQ as well. There was no statistically significant difference found in quality ratings between health care and private practice settings. Descriptive analysis revealed additional areas of differences across practice settings in the provision of mobile technology as AAC. Limitations of this study were identified and further research recommendations were made.

37. Graves' disease in a five-month-old boy with an unusual treatment course.

Abstract

Graves' disease (GD) is rare in children under age five years. Antithyroid drugs are typically first-line therapy but carry the risks of agranulocytosis and liver dysfunction. A male infant with multiple congenital anomalies, left ventricular hypertrophy, and neurologic dysfunction developed GD at five months of life. The presence of chronic hepatitis complicated medical management. Potassium iodide was effective temporarily, but urgent thyroidectomy was required at nine months of age. Postoperatively, the patient developed a thyroid function pattern consistent with impaired pituitary sensitivity to thyroid hormone (TH) that responded to the addition of liothyronine. Exome sequencing revealed a heterozygous de novo duplication of the ATAD3 gene cluster, suggesting a possible mitochondrial disorder. This case describes the youngest child to date to be diagnosed with endogenous GD and to successfully undergo definitive treatment with thyroidectomy. An underlying defect in mitochondrial function is suspected, suggesting a potential novel pathophysiologic link to early-onset thyroid autoimmunity. Additionally, this case illustrated the development of impaired pituitary sensitivity to TH following thyrotoxicosis of postnatal onset, which may contribute to our understanding of hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis development. 38. A study of the effect of aerosols on surface ozone through meteorology feedbacks over China.

Abstract

Interactions between aerosols and gases in the atmosphere have been the focus of an increasing number of studies in recent years. Here, we focus on aerosol effects on tropospheric ozone that involve meteorological feedbacks induced by aerosol-radiation interactions. Specifically, we study the effects that involve aerosol influences on the transport of gaseous pollutants and on atmospheric moisture, both of which can impact ozone chemistry. For this purpose, we use the UK Earth System Model (UKESM1) with which we performed sensitivity simulations including and excluding the aerosol direct radiative effect (ADE) on atmospheric chemistry, and focused our analysis on an area with high aerosol presence, namely China. By comparing the simulations, we found that ADE reduced the shortwave radiation by 11 % in China, and consequently led to lower turbulent kinetic energy, weaker horizontal winds and a shallower boundary layer (with a maximum of 102.28 m reduction in north China). On the one hand, the suppressed boundary layer limited the export and diffusion of pollutants, and increased the concentration of CO, SO2, NO, NO2, PM2.5 and PM10 in the aerosol rich regions. The NO / NO2 ratio generally increased and led to more ozone depletion. On the other hand, the boundary layer top acted as a barrier that trapped moisture at lower altitudes and reduced the moisture at higher altitudes (the specific humidity was reduced by 1.69 % at 1493 m averaged in China). Due to reduced water vapor, fewer clouds were formed, and more sunlight reached the surface, so the photolytical production of ozone increased. Under the combined effect of the two meteorology feedback methods, the annual average ozone concentration in China declined by 2.01 ppb (6.2 %), which was found to bring the model in closer agreement with surface ozone measurements from different parts of China.
