This study investigates the implications of adopting fractional entropy in the area law framework and demonstrates its natural alignment with an isothermal description of black hole composition. We discuss the Zeroth law compatibility of the fractional entropy and define an empirical temperature for the horizon. We highlight the distinction between the empirical and conventional Hawking temperatures associated with the black holes. Unlike the Hawking temperature, this empirical temperature appears universal, and its proximity to the Planck temperature suggests a possible quantum gravity origin. We also establish the connection between these temperatures. Furthermore, extending the conventional fractional parameter $q$, constrained between 0 and 1, we establish that any positive real number can bound $q$ under the concavity condition, provided the log of micro-state dimensionality exceeds $q-1$. Specifically, for black holes, $q = 2$, necessitating micro-state dimensionality greater than $e$, thereby excluding the construction of black hole horizon states with two level bits or qubits. We also identify the connection between the validity of the second law and information fluctuation complexity. The second law requires that the variance of information content remain smaller than the area of the black hole horizon. This constraint naturally gives rise to a Boltzmann-Gibbs-like entropy for the black hole, which, in contrast to the canonical formulation, is associated with its mass rather than its area. Cohen, Kaplan, and Nelson's influential paper established that the UV-IR cut-offs cannot be arbitrarily chosen but are constrained by the relation $\Lambda^2 L \lesssim M_p$. Here, we revisit the formulation of the CKN entropy bound and compare it with other bounds. The specific characteristics of each bound are shown to depend on the underlying scaling of entropy. Notably, employing a non-extensive scaling with the von Neumann entropy definition leads to a more stringent constraint, $S_{\text{max}} \approx \sqrt{S_{\text{BH}}}$. We also clarify distinctions between the IR cut-offs used in these frameworks. Moving to the causal entropy bound, we demonstrate that it categorises the CKN bound as matter-like, the von Neumann bound as radiation-like, and the Bekenstein bound as black hole-like systems when saturated. Emphasising cosmological implications, we confirm the consistency between the bounds and the first laws of horizon thermodynamics. We then analyse the shortcomings in standard Holographic Dark Energy (HDE) models, highlighting the challenges in constructing HDE using $\Lambda^2 L \lesssim M_p$. Specifically, using the Hubble function in HDE definitions introduces circular logic, causing dark energy to mimic the second dominant component rather than behaving as matter. We further illustrate that the potential for other IR cut-offs, like the future event horizon in an FLRW background or those involving derivatives of the Hubble function, to explain late-time acceleration stems from an integration constant that cannot be trivially set to zero. Deformation of material lines drives transport and dissipation in many industrial and natural flows. Here we report an exact Eulerian formula for the stretching rate of a material line, also known as the topological entropy, in a prototype two-dimensional fluid. The only requirement is a distribution of eigenvalues of the strain rate tensor and their decorrelation time. This eliminates the need for Lagrangian tracking in experimental turbulence where particle trajectories are entangled, and thus poorly resolved. Numerical simulations reveal an excellent agreement between our Eulerian estimate and the stretching rate of a Lagrangian material line, over a wide range of Reynolds number.

We present results for the distance sensitivity oracle (DSO) problem, where one needs to preprocess a given directed weighted graph $G=(V,E)$ in order to answer queries about the shortest path distance from $s$ to $t$ in $G$ that avoids edge $e$, for any $s,t \in V, e \in E$. No non-trivial results are known for DSO in the distributed CONGEST model even though it is of importance to maintain efficient communication under an edge failure. Let $n=|V|$, and let $D$ be the undirected diameter of $G$. Our first DSO algorithm optimizes query response rounds and can answer a batch of any $k\geq 1$ queries in $O(k+D)$ rounds after taking $\tilde{O}(n^{3/2})$ rounds to preprocess $G$. Our second algorithm takes $\tilde{O}(n)$ rounds for preprocessing, and then it can answer any batch of $k\geq 1$ queries in $\tilde{O}(k\sqrt{n}+D)$ rounds. We complement these algorithms with some unconditional CONGEST lower bounds that give trade-offs between preprocessing rounds and rounds needed to answer queries. Additionally, we present almost-optimal upper and lower bounds for the related all pairs second simple shortest path (2-APSiSP) problem, where for all pairs of vertices $x,y \in V$, we need to compute the minimum weight of a simple $x$-$y$ path that differs from the precomputed $x$-$y$ shortest path by at least one edge.

The NOvA collaboration reports cross-section measurements for $\nu_{\mu}$ charged-current interactions with low hadronic energy (maximum kinetic energy of 250 MeV for protons and 175 MeV for pions) in the NOvA Near Detector. The results are presented as a double-differential cross section as a function of the direct observables of the final-state muon kinematics. Results are also presented as a single-differential cross section as a function of the derived square of the four-momentum transfer, $Q^{2}$, and as a function of the derived neutrino energy. The data correspond to an accumulated 8.09$\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target (POT) in the neutrino mode of the NuMI beam, with a narrow band of neutrino energies peaked at 1.8 GeV. The analysis provides a sample of neutrino-nucleus interactions with an enhanced fraction of quasi-elastic and two-particle-two-hole (2p2h) interactions. This enhancement allows quantitative comparisons with various nuclear models. We find strong disagreement between data and theory-based models in various regions of the muon kinematic phase space, especially in the forward muon direction., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. Double- and single-differential cross sections for inclusive charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering are reported for the kinematic domain 0 to 2 GeV/c in three-momentum transfer and 0 to 2 GeV in available energy, at a mean muon-neutrino energy of 1.86 GeV. The measurements are based on an estimated 995,760 muon-neutrino CC interactions in the scintillator medium of the NOvA Near Detector. The subdomain populated by 2-particle-2-hole reactions is identified by the cross-section excess relative to predictions for neutrino-nucleus scattering that are constrained by a data control sample. Models for 2-particle-2- hole processes are rated by chi-square comparisons of the predicted-versus-measured muon-neutrino CC inclusive cross section over the full phase space and in the restricted subdomain. Motile liquid crystal (LC) colloids show peculiar behavior due to the high sensitivity to external stimuli driven by the LC elastic and surface effects. However, few studies focus on harnessing the LC phase transitions to propel colloidal inclusions by the nematic-isotropic (NI) interface. We engineer a quasi-2D active system consisting of solid micron-sized light-absorbent platelets immersed in a thermotropic nematic LC. The platelets self-propel in the presence of light while self-inducing a localized NI phase transition. The sample's temperature, light intensity, and confinement determine three different regimes: a 2D large regime where the platelet-isotropic phase bubble is static and the NI interface remains stable; a compact motile-2D regime where the NI interface lies closer to the platelet's contour; and a motile-3D-confinement regime characterized by the emergence of multipolar configurations of the LC. We perform continuum-theory simulations that predict stationary platelet-LC states when confined in 3D. Accurate interaction potentials between microscopic components such as colloidal particles or cells are crucial to understanding a range of processes, including colloidal crystallization, bacterial colony formation, and cancer metastasis. Even in systems where the precise interaction mechanisms are unknown, effective interactions can be measured to inform simulation and design. However, these measurements are difficult and time-intensive, and often require conditions that are drastically different from in situ conditions of the system of interest. Moreover, existing methods of measuring interparticle potentials rely on constraining a small number of particles at equilibrium, placing limits on which interactions can be measured. We introduce a method for inferring interaction potentials directly from trajectory data of interacting particles. We explicitly solve the equations of motion to find a form of the potential that maximizes the probability of observing a known trajectory. Our method is valid for systems both in and out of equilibrium, is well-suited to large numbers of particles interacting in typical system conditions, and does not assume a functional form of the interaction potential. We apply our method to infer the interactions of colloidal spheres from experimental data, successfully extracting the range and strength of a depletion interaction from the motion of the particles.

Navigation of wheeled vehicles on uneven terrain necessitates going beyond the 2D approaches for trajectory planning. Specifically, it is essential to incorporate the full 6dof variation of vehicle pose and its associated stability cost in the planning process. To this end, most recent works aim to learn a neural network model to predict the vehicle evolution. However, such approaches are data-intensive and fraught with generalization issues. In this paper, we present a purely model-based approach that just requires the digital elevation information of the terrain. Specifically, we express the wheel-terrain interaction and 6dof pose prediction as a non-linear least squares (NLS) problem. As a result, trajectory planning can be viewed as a bi-level optimization. The inner optimization layer predicts the pose on the terrain along a given trajectory, while the outer layer deforms the trajectory itself to reduce the stability and kinematic costs of the pose. We improve the state-of-the-art in the following respects. First, we show that our NLS based pose prediction closely matches the output from a high-fidelity physics engine. This result coupled with the fact that we can query gradients of the NLS solver, makes our pose predictor, a differentiable wheel-terrain interaction model. We further leverage this differentiability to efficiently solve the proposed bi-level trajectory optimization problem. This Letter reports a search for charge-parity ($CP$) symmetry violating nonstandard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter using the NOvA Experiment, and examines their effects on the determination of the standard oscillation parameters. Data from $\nu_{\mu}(\bar{\nu}_{\mu})\rightarrow\nu_{\mu}(\bar{\nu}_{\mu})$ and $\nu_{\mu}(\bar{\nu}_{\mu})\rightarrow\nu_{e}(\bar{\nu}_{e})$ oscillation channels are used to measure the effect of the NSI parameters $\varepsilon_{e\mu}$ and $\varepsilon_{e\tau}$. With 90% CL the magnitudes of the NSI couplings are constrained to be $|\varepsilon_{e\mu}| \, \lesssim 0.3$ and $|\varepsilon_{e\tau}| \, \lesssim 0.4$. A degeneracy at $|\varepsilon_{e\tau}| \, \approx 1.8$ is reported, and we observe that the presence of NSI limits sensitivity to the standard $CP$ phase $\delta_{\tiny\text{CP}}$.
