Abstract: We report on a search for millicharged particles (mCPs) produced in cosmic ray proton atmospheric interactions using data collected during the first science run of the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment. The mCPs produced by two processes -- meson decay and proton bremsstrahlung -- are considered in this study. This search utilized a novel signature unique to liquid xenon (LXe) time projection chambers (TPCs), allowing sensitivity to mCPs with masses ranging from 10 to 1000 MeV/c$^2$ and fractional charges between 0.001 and 0.02 of the electron charge e. With an exposure of 60 live days and a 5.5 tonne fiducial mass, we observed no significant excess over background. This represents the first experimental search for atmospheric mCPs and the first search for mCPs using an underground LXe experiment.

Abstract: The XLZD collaboration is developing a two-phase xenon time projection chamber with an active mass of 60 to 80 t capable of probing the remaining WIMP-nucleon interaction parameter space down to the so-called neutrino fog. In this work we show that, based on the performance of currently operating detectors using the same technology and a realistic reduction of radioactivity in detector materials, such an experiment will also be able to competitively search for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{136}$Xe using a natural-abundance xenon target. XLZD can reach a 3$\sigma$ discovery potential half-life of 5.7$\times$10$^{27}$ yr (and a 90% CL exclusion of 1.3$\times$10$^{28}$ yr) with 10 years of data taking, corresponding to a Majorana mass range of 7.3-31.3 meV (4.8-20.5 meV). XLZD will thus exclude the inverted neutrino mass ordering parameter space and will start to probe the normal ordering region for most of the nuclear matrix elements commonly considered by the community., Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: This report describes the experimental strategy and technologies for a next-generation xenon observatory sensitive to dark matter and neutrino physics. The detector will have an active liquid xenon target mass of 60-80 tonnes and is proposed by the XENON-LUX-ZEPLIN-DARWIN (XLZD) collaboration. The design is based on the mature liquid xenon time projection chamber technology of the current-generation experiments, LZ and XENONnT. A baseline design and opportunities for further optimization of the individual detector components are discussed. The experiment envisaged here has the capability to explore parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter down to the neutrino fog, with a 3$\sigma$ evidence potential for the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross sections as low as $3\times10^{-49}\rm cm^2$ (at 40 GeV/c$^2$ WIMP mass). The observatory is also projected to have a 3$\sigma$ observation potential of neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe at a half-life of up to $5.7\times 10^{27}$ years. Abstract: We report results of a search for nuclear recoils induced by weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter using the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) two-phase xenon time projection chamber. This analysis uses a total exposure of $4.2\pm0.1$ tonne-years from 280 live days of LZ operation, of which $3.3\pm0.1$ tonne-years and 220 live days are new. A technique to actively tag background electronic recoils from $^{214}$Pb $\beta$ decays is featured for the first time. Enhanced electron-ion recombination is observed in two-neutrino double electron capture decays of $^{124}$Xe, representing a noteworthy new background. After removal of artificial signal-like events injected into the data set to mitigate analyzer bias, we find no evidence for an excess over expected backgrounds. World-leading constraints are placed on spin-independent (SI) and spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross sections for masses $\geq$9 GeV/$c^2$. The strongest SI exclusion set is $2.1\times10^{-48}$ cm$^{2}$ at the 90% confidence level at a mass of 36 GeV/$c^2$, and the best SI median sensitivity achieved is $5.0\times10^{-48}$ cm$^{2}$ for a mass of 40 GeV/$c^2$., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. Abstract: The broad physics reach of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment covers rare phenomena beyond the direct detection of dark matter. We report precise measurements of the extremely rare decay of $^{124}$Xe through the process of two-neutrino double electron capture (2$\nu$2EC), utilizing a $1.39\,\mathrm{kg} \times \mathrm{yr}$ isotopic exposure from the first LZ science run. A half-life of $T_{1/2}^{2\nu2\mathrm{EC}} = (1.09 \pm 0.14_{\text{stat}} \pm 0.05_{\text{sys}}) \times 10^{22}\,\mathrm{yr}$ is observed with a statistical significance of $8.3\,\sigma$, in agreement with literature. First empirical measurements of the KK capture fraction relative to other K-shell modes were conducted, and demonstrate consistency with respect to recent signal models at the $1.4\,\sigma$ level., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) may interact with a virtual pion that is exchanged between nucleons. This interaction channel is important to consider in models where the spin-independent isoscalar channel is suppressed. Using data from the first science run of the LUX-ZEPLIN dark matter experiment, containing 60 live days of data in a 5.5~tonne fiducial mass of liquid xenon, we report the results on a search for WIMP-pion interactions. We observe no significant excess and set an upper limit of $1.5\times10^{-46}$~cm$^2$ at a 90\% confidence level for a WIMP mass of 33~GeV/c$^2$ for this interaction.

Abstract: The Data Acquisition System (DAQ) for the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) dark matter detector is described. The signals from 745 PMTs, distributed across three subsystems, are sampled with 100-MHz 32-channel digitizers (DDC-32s). A basic waveform analysis is carried out on the on-board Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to extract information about the observed scintillation and electroluminescence signals. This information is used to determine if the digitized waveforms should be preserved for offline analysis. The system is designed around the Kintex-7 FPGA. In addition to digitizing the PMT signals and providing basic event selection in real time, the flexibility provided by the use of FPGAs allows us to monitor the performance of the detector and the DAQ in parallel to normal data acquisition. The hardware and software/firmware of this FPGA-based Architecture for Data acquisition and Realtime monitoring (FADR) are discussed and performance measurements are described., Comment: 18 pages, 24 figures

Abstract: LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a tonne-scale experiment searching for direct dark matter interactions and other rare events. It is located at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, USA. The core of the LZ detector is a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber (TPC), designed with the primary goal of detecting Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) via their induced low energy nuclear recoils. Surrounding the TPC, two veto detectors immersed in an ultra-pure water tank enable reducing background events to enhance the discovery potential. Intricate calibration systems are purposely designed to precisely understand the responses of these three detector volumes to various types of particle interactions and to demonstrate LZ's ability to discriminate between signals and backgrounds. In this paper, we present a comprehensive discussion of the key features, requirements, and performance of the LZ calibration systems, which play a crucial role in enabling LZ's WIMP-search and its broad science program. The thorough description of these calibration systems, with an emphasis on their novel aspects, is valuable for future calibration efforts in direct dark matter and other rare-event search experiments.

Abstract: The first science run of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, a dual-phase xenon time project chamber operating in the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, USA, has reported leading limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interactions and interactions described from a non-relativistic effective field theory (NREFT). Using the same 5.5~t fiducial mass and 60 live days of exposure we report on the results of a relativistic extension to the NREFT. We present constraints on couplings from covariant interactions arising from the coupling of vector, axial currents, and electric dipole moments of the nucleon to the magnetic and electric dipole moments of the WIMP which cannot be described by recasting previous results described by an NREFT. Using a profile-likelihood ratio analysis, in an energy region between 0~keV$_\text{nr}$ to 270~keV$_\text{nr}$, we report 90% confidence level exclusion limits on the coupling strength of five interactions in both the isoscalar and isovector bases., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The free energy of ion solvation can be decomposed into enthalpic and entropic contributions. This helps to understand the connection between the dielectric properties and the underlying forces. We present a simple linear-response model of screened charge interactions that provides an alternative understanding of solvation barriers. Moreover, it explains the "anti-Coulomb" interactions (attraction between like-charged ions and repulsion between opposite-charged ions) observed in both simulations and experiments. Abstract: Invasive mucormycosis (IM) is associated with high mortality and morbidity. MAT2203 is an orally administered lipid nanocrystal formulation of amphotericin B, which has been shown to be safe and effective against other fungal infections. We sought to compare the efficacy of MAT2203 to liposomal amphotericin B (LAMB) treatment in a neutropenic mouse model of IM due to Rhizopus arrhizus var. delemar or Mucor circinelloides f. jenssenii DI15-131. In R. arrhizus var. delemar-infected mice, 15 mg/kg of MAT2203 qd was as effective as 10 mg/kg of LAMB in prolonging median survival time vs placebo (13.5 and 16.5 days for MAT2203 and LAMB, respectively, vs 9 days for placebo) and enhancing overall survival vs placebo-treated mice (40% and 45% for MAT2203 and LAMB, respectively, vs 0% for placebo). A higher dose of 45 mg/kg of MAT2203 was not well tolerated by mice and showed no benefit over placebo. Similar results were obtained with mice infected with M. circinelloides. Furthermore, while both MAT2203 and LAMB treatment resulted in a significant reduction of ~1.0-2.0log and ~2.0-2.5log in Rhizopus delemar or M. circinelloides lung and brain burden vs placebo mice, respectively, LAMB significantly reduced tissue fungal burden in mice infected with R. delemar vs tissues of mice treated with MAT2203. These results support continued investigation and development of MAT2203 as a novel and oral formulation of amphotericin for the treatment of mucormycosis.

Abstract: Searches for dark matter with liquid xenon time projection chamber experiments have traditionally focused on the region of the parameter space that is characteristic of weakly interacting massive particles, ranging from a few GeV/$c^2$ to a few TeV/$c^2$. Models of dark matter with a mass much heavier than this are well motivated by early production mechanisms different from the standard thermal freeze-out, but they have generally been less explored experimentally. In this work, we present a re-analysis of the first science run (SR1) of the LZ experiment, with an exposure of $0.9$ tonne$\times$year, to search for ultraheavy particle dark matter. The signal topology consists of multiple energy deposits in the active region of the detector forming a straight line, from which the velocity of the incoming particle can be reconstructed on an event-by-event basis. Zero events with this topology were observed after applying the data selection calibrated on a simulated sample of signal-like events. New experimental constraints are derived, which rule out previously unexplored regions of the dark matter parameter space of spin-independent interactions beyond a mass of 10$^{17}$ GeV/$c^2$., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

No significant excess in this high energy region is observed. Abstract: We define Chern numbers of a matroid. These numbers are obtained when intersecting appropriate matroid Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycles defined by L\'opez de Medrano, Rinc\'on, and Shaw. We prove that when a matroid arises from a complex hyperplane arrangement the Chern numbers of the matroid correspond to the Chern numbers of the log cotangent bundle. A matroid of rank 3 has two Chern numbers. We prove that they are positive and that their ratio is bounded by 3, which is analogous to the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality. If the matroid is orientable, we generalize a result of Eterovi\'c, Figuera, and Urz\'ua to prove that the ratio is bounded above by 5/2. Finally, we give a formula for the Chern numbers of the uniform matroid of any rank.

Abstract: The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber. We report searches for new physics appearing through few-keV-scale electron recoils, using the experiment's first exposure of 60 live days and a fiducial mass of 5.5t. The data are found to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, and limits are set on models for new physics including solar axion electron coupling, solar neutrino magnetic moment and millicharge, and electron couplings to galactic axion-like particles and hidden photons. Abstract: The Migdal effect predicts that a nuclear recoil interaction can be accompanied by atomic ionization, allowing many dark matter direct detection experiments to gain sensitivity to sub-GeV masses. We report the first direct search for the Migdal effect for M- and L-shell electrons in liquid xenon using 7.0$\pm$1.6 keV nuclear recoils produced by tagged neutron scatters. Despite an observed background rate lower than that of expected signals in the region of interest, we do not observe a signal consistent with predictions. We discuss possible explanations, including inaccurate predictions for either the Migdal rate or the signal response in liquid xenon. Abstract: Ultraviolet nanosecond laser annealing (LA) is a powerful tool where strongly confined heating and melting are desirable. In semiconductor technologies the importance of LA increases with the increasing complexity of the proposed integration schemes. Optimizing the LA process along with the experimental design is challenging, especially when complex 3D nanostructured systems with various shapes and phases are involved. Within this context, reliable simulations of laser melting are required for optimizing the process parameters while reducing the number of experimental tests. This gives rise to a virtual Design of Experiments (DoE). $Si_{1-x}Ge_{x}$ alloys are nowadays used for their compatibility with silicon devices enabling to engineer properties such as strain, carrier mobilities and bandgap. In this work, the laser melting process of relaxed and strained $Si_{1-x}Ge_{x}$ is simulated with a finite element method / phase field approach. Particularly, we calibrated the dielectric functions of the alloy for its crystalline and liquid phase using experimental data. We highlighted the importance of reproducing the exact reflectivity of the interface between air and the material in its different aggregation states, to correctly mimic the process. We indirectly discovered intriguing features on the optical behavior of melt silicon-germanium.

32. Fractional dynamics foster deep learning of COPD stage prediction

Abstract: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Current COPD diagnosis (i.e., spirometry) could be unreliable because the test depends on an adequate effort from the tester and testee. Moreover, the early diagnosis of COPD is challenging. We address COPD detection by constructing two novel physiological signals datasets (4432 records from 54 patients in the WestRo COPD dataset and 13824 medical records from 534 patients in the WestRo Porti COPD dataset). The authors demonstrate their complex coupled fractal dynamical characteristics and perform a fractional-order dynamics deep learning analysis to diagnose COPD. The authors found that the fractional-order dynamical modeling can extract distinguishing signatures from the physiological signals across patients with all COPD stages from stage 0 (healthy) to stage 4 (very severe). They use the fractional signatures to develop and train a deep neural network that predicts COPD stages based on the input features (such as thorax breathing effort, respiratory rate, or oxygen saturation). The authors show that the fractional dynamic deep learning model (FDDLM) achieves a COPD prediction accuracy of 98.66% and can serve as a robust alternative to spirometry. 33. A randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, multiple dose, parallel study to investigate the effects of a cathepsin S inhibitor in celiac disease

Abstract: Abstract Celiac disease is a chronic, immune‐mediated enteropathy with symptoms triggered by exposure to dietary gluten in genetically predisposed individuals. The only available management option is lifelong adherence to a gluten‐free diet. This randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, parallel‐group, single‐center study tested the effects of the cathepsin S inhibitor RO5459072 on the immune response to a 13‐day gluten challenge in 19 participants with celiac disease (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02679014). Nine participants in the RO5459072 arm received 100 mg study drug b.i.d. (200 mg daily); 10 received a placebo. The primary end point was the number of responders to the gluten challenge (defined as individuals with an increase in the number of gliadin‐specific, IFNγ‐secreting T cells detected using an ELISPOT assay). However, there was a weak response to the gluten challenge across both arms. Few participants had an increase in gliadin‐specific, IFNγ‐secreting T cells, and the antigen‐specific responses (anti‐tTG and anti‐DGP antibodies) were weaker than expected in both arms. Therefore, the primary end point was not met, although the study was underpowered to detect a treatment effect under these circumstances. Pharmacodynamic findings suggested that RO5459072 had some beneficial effects. Fewer participants in the RO5459072 arm exhibited gliadin‐specific IFNγ‐secreting T cells after 6 days' gluten intake. Participants in the RO5459072 arm also showed decreased intestinal permeability, and a decrease in the number of circulating B cells, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells compared to baseline. Nevertheless, the absence of clear effects on the response to a gluten challenge indicates that inhibition of cathepsin S may not be an effective treatment strategy for celiac disease.

Abstract: In our study, we investigated the effects of Expando, a commercial biostimulant derived from seaweed and yeast extracts, on the secondary metabolism of Lady cot and Orange prima apricot cultivars. Notably, treatments with or 5.0 L/ha of Expando improved fruit uniformity and harvests synchronization, providing agronomic benefits. Expando positively influenced the biosynthesis of essential bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, and anthocyanins in both apricot pulp and peel, as validated by HPLC-ESI-MS/MS analysis. These metabolic enhancements translated into significantly increased total antioxidant activity, particularly evident in the peel samples. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed distinct effects of the 5.0 and 4.0 L/ha treatments, distinguishing them from lower doses and the control group. Our findings emphasize the potential of Expando to enhance the phytochemical profile of apricot fruits, positioning biostimulants as pivotal tools for improving fruit quality and sustainability in agriculture. Expando offers a sustainable and eco-friendly approach to enhancing crop yield and nutritional value, representing a significant step towards more resilient and environmentally conscious farming practices. Abstract: Introduction Previous population-based studies, mainly from high-income countries, have shown that a higher forced vital capacity (FVC) is associated with a lower risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the longitudinal association between spirometry measures and the onset of cardiometabolic diseases across sites in low-income, middle-income and high-income countries.Methods The study population comprised 5916 individuals from 15 countries participating in the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease baseline and follow-up assessments. Postbronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), FVC and FEV1/FVC were measured at baseline. Participants who reported having doctor-diagnosed hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and stroke at follow-up but not at baseline were considered new cases of these diseases. The association between lung function and the onset of participant-reported cardiometabolic diseases was assessed in each site using regression models, and estimates were combined using random effects meta-analysis. Models were adjusted for sex, age, smoking, body mass index and educational level.Results Participants with greater per cent predicted FVC were less likely to have new-onset diabetes (OR per 10%=0.91, 95% CI 0.84 to 0.99), heart disease (OR per 10%=0.86, 95% CI 0.80 to 0.92) and stroke (OR per 10%=0.81, 95% CI 0.73 to 0.89) during the follow-up period (mean±SD 9.5±3.6 years). A greater percentage of FEV1 was associated with a lower risk of onset of heart disease and stroke. No significant association was found between FEV1/FVC and onset of reported cardiometabolic diseases, except for a higher risk of diabetes (OR per 10%=1.21, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.35) in participants with higher FEV1/FVC.Conclusions The findings of this study suggest that a low FVC is more important than a low FEV1/FVC as a risk factor for developing cardiometabolic diseases. The value of including FVC in risk score models to improve their precision in predicting the onset of cardiometabolic diseases should be explored.

Abstract: Leveraging the increasing accessibility of smartphones in healthcare settings, we developed a smartphone app aimed at enhancing sickle cell disease (SCD) screening, particularly in resource-limited settings. Our application provides accurate and non-invasive SCD screening with instant results at the point-of-need. The app operates by analyzing patient fingernail images via a smartphone image to gauge anemia severity and by using targeted inquiries to identify SCD-related symptoms. These inputs collectively generate an SCD IMage and Patient profile-based Likelihood Estimation (SIMPLE) score, which estimates disease probability. The accuracy of the score depends on two inputs: the patient's anemia status and their health survey responses. We tested the app on 485 pediatric patients at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA), achieving an overall sensitivity of 74 % and specificity of 76 % in screening for SCD among children aged 6 months to 21 years. Notably, the app demonstrated enhanced performance in the target demographic, with 100 % sensitivity and 75 % specificity for screening SCD in children aged 6 months to 5 years. This cost-effective and scalable app efficiently pinpoints and stratifies individuals, particularly those who missed early screening, for formal screening programs.

Abstract: Background: Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is the preferred surgical approach for high-risk basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Pre-surgical tumor margins delineation with line field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) is expected to reduce MMS stages number. Objective: to investigate the effectiveness of LC-OCT preoperative evaluation of high-risk BCC margins in reducing the number of MMS stages to achieve tumor clearance. Patients and methods: high-risk BCC patients undergoing MMS at Policlinico A. Gemelli Foundation, IRCCS – Rome during January 2018 – December 2022. The LC-OCT group included patients undergoing preoperative lateral tumor margin demarcation by clinical, dermoscopic, and LC-OCT examination; patients in the control group underwent preoperative lateral tumor margin demarcation by clinical and dermoscopic examination only. LC-OCT imaging was compared to MMS histopathological sections. Results: 63 facial high-risk BCCs from 60 patients, mean age of 68.3 years (SD 11.9). The LC-OCT and the control group included 22 and 41 BCCs, respectively. LC-OCT imaging showed almost perfect agreement with histopathology for low- versus high-risk of recurrence BCC histopathological subtypes discrimination (Cohen’s kappa 0.88). We reported a significant difference in the mean number of MMS stages between the LC-OCT and the control group (1.23 ± 0.43 SD, and 1.89 ± 1.05 SD, respectively; p-value =0.007). At univariate regression analysis, LC-OCT preoperative mapping of BCC tumor margins significantly reduced patients’ risk of undergoing >1 MMS stage (crude odds ratio [ORc]: 0.3 95% CI 0.1–0.8, p-value =0.032). Conclusion: LC-OCT preoperative evaluation of high-risk BCC margins significantly reduced the number of MMS stages to achieve tumor clearance.

La mayoría de su producción literaria parece estar dedicada a la escritura o re-escritura, mezclando realidad y ficción, de las biografías de los personajes más emblemáticos de la cultura y la miología de España, incluyendo su autobiografía, Memoria de la melancolía (1970). El estudio se focaliza en dos aspectos: la influencia de la biología –ciencia de la vida– en la narratología –ciencia de la narración– y el uso de la narración como terapia contra el trauma colectivo e individual.

41. Flexoelectricity and surface ferroelectricity of water ice

Abstract: The phase diagram of ice is complex and contains many phases, but the most common (frozen water at ambient pressure, also known as Ih ice) is a non-polar material despite individual water molecules being polar. Consequently, ice is not piezoelectric and cannot generate electricity under pressure. On the other hand, the coupling between polarization and strain gradient (flexoelectricity) is universal, so ice may in theory generate electricity under bending. Here we report the experimental demonstration that ice is flexoelectric, finding a coefficient comparable to that of ceramics such as SrTiO3 or TiO2. Additionally, and unexpectedly, the sensitivity of flexoelectric measurements to surface boundary conditions has also revealed a ferroelectric phase transition around 163 confined in the near-surface region of the ice slabs. The electromechanical properties of ice may find applications for low-cost transducers made in-situ in cold and remote locations, but perhaps more important are the consequences for natural phenomena involving ice electrification. In particular, we have calculated the flexoelectric polarization generated in collisions between ice and graupel particles, which reproduces the experimentally reported results for contact electrification in such events, known to cause electrification in storm clouds.

Abstract: Abstract Background A compromised cardiac autonomic function has been found in subjects with insulin resistance related disorders such as obesity, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and type 2 diabetes and confers an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Growing evidence indicate that 1 h plasma glucose levels (1hPG) during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) ≥ 155 mg/dl identify amongst subjects with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) a new category of prediabetes (NGT 1 h-high), harboring an increased risk of cardiovascular organ damage. In this study we explored the relationship between 1 h post-load hyperglycemia and cardiac autonomic dysfunction. Methods Presence of cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) defined by cardiovascular autonomic reflex tests (CARTs) and heart rate variability (HRV), assessed by 24-h electrocardiography were evaluated in 88 non-diabetic subjects subdivided on the basis of OGTT data in: NGT with 1 h PG 50 ms (PNN50) and Triangular index. Univariate analyses showed that 1hPG, but not fasting and 2hPG, was inversely associated with all the explored HVR parameters and positively with CARTs determined presence of CAN. In multivariate regression analysis models including several confounders we found that 1hPG was an independent contributor of HRV and presence of CAN. Conclusion Subjects with 1hPG ≥ 155 mg/dl have an impaired cardiac autonomic function.

Abstract: Abiotic stress, such as salt and osmotic stress, negatively impacts plant growth and productivity, making it crucial to explore sustainable solutions that can improve plant resilience. In this study, we investigated the effects of a biostimulant formulation containing betalain degradation products (BDPs) on the growth and stress resistance of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings subjected to salt stress (SS) and osmotic stress (OS) conditions. Specifically, we fortified the medium culture of stressed seedlings with 0.02, 0.10, and 0.20 mg/mL of BDPs-enriched biostimulant, revealing significant improvements in growth and biomass under both SS and OS conditions, with the most notable effects in OS condition. In this study, we applied these findings to stress conditions, demonstrating that treatment with the formulation containing BDP-related compounds significantly enhanced seedling growth and biomass in both salt stress (SS) and osmotic stress (OS) environments, with the most significant effects observed in OS conditions. Specifically, seedlings treated with 0.20 mg/mL of BDP-enriched biostimulant exhibited growth increases of up to 150 % under OS conditions and a 116 % increase under SS conditions, restoring growth metrics comparable to control conditions. We analyzed the impact of the formulation on the dynamics of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the activities of antioxidant enzyme, revealing that BDP-containing formulation effectively balanced ROS levels by modulating superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and the glutathione peroxidase-glutathione reductase (GPX-GR) system in both stress conditions. Furthermore, BDP-containing formulation affected proline metabolism by reducing its accumulation under stress conditions and enhancing proline catabolism, as demonstrated by the upregulation of the genes for proline dehydrogenase (PDH), pyrroline-5-carboxylate dehydrogenase (P5CDH), and ornithine aminotransferase (OAT). These findings suggest that the biostimulant enriched in BDP-related compounds enhanced the resilience of Arabidopsis seedlings to abiotic stress by regulating both oxidative stress responses and proline metabolism, highlighting their potential applications for improving crop tolerance to challenging environmental conditions.

Abstract: The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment recently reported limits on WIMP-nucleus interactions from its initial science run, down to $9.2\times10^{-48}$ cm$^2$ for the spin-independent interaction of a 36 GeV/c$^2$ WIMP at 90% confidence level. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of the backgrounds important for this result and for other upcoming physics analyses, including neutrinoless double-beta decay searches and effective field theory interpretations of LUX-ZEPLIN data. We confirm that the in-situ determinations of bulk and fixed radioactive backgrounds are consistent with expectations from the ex-situ assays. The observed background rate after WIMP search criteria were applied was $(6.3\pm0.5)\times10^{-5}$ events/keV$_{ee}$/kg/day in the low-energy region, approximately 60 times lower than the equivalent rate reported by the LUX experiment., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures

Abstract: Dual-phase xenon time projection chamber (TPC) detectors offer heightened sensitivities for dark matter detection across a spectrum of particle masses. To broaden their capability to low-mass dark matter interactions, we investigated the light and charge responses of liquid xenon (LXe) to sub-keV nuclear recoils. Using neutron events from a pulsed Adelphi Deuterium-Deuterium neutron generator, an in situ calibration was conducted on the LUX detector. We demonstrate direct measurements of light and charge yields down to 0.45 keV and 0.27 keV, respectively, both approaching single quanta production, the physical limit of LXe detectors. These results hold significant implications for the future of dual-phase xenon TPCs in detecting low-mass dark matter via nuclear recoils.
