Understanding how light modifies long-range order is key to improve our ability to control material functionality on an ultrafast timescale. Transient spatial heterogeneity has been proposed in many materials, but isolating the dynamics of different regions experimentally has been challenging. Here we address this issue and measure the dynamics of orbital order melting in the layered manganite, La0.5Sr1.5MnO4, and isolate the surface dynamics from the bulk for the first time. Bulk measurements show orbital order is rapidly suppressed, but the correlation length surprisingly increases. However, the surface dynamics, show a stronger suppression and a significant decrease in correlation length. By isolating the surface changes, we find that light preferentially melts a less ordered surface and the loss of long-range order is likely driven by the formation of local and disordered polarons. Melting the disordered surface effectively increases the average correlation of the bulk probed volume, resolving the contradictory response. These results show that surface scattering methods are necessary to understand both surface and bulk dynamics in heterogeneous materials., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

We present a new set up for resonant inelastic hard X-ray scattering at the Bernina beamline of SwissFEL with energy, momentum, and temporal resolution. The compact R=0.5 m Johann-type spectrometer can be equipped with up to 3 crystal analysers and allows efficient collection of RIXS spectra. Optical pumping for time-resolved studies can be realized with a broad span of optical wavelengths. We demonstrate the performance of the set-up at overall ~180 meV resolution in a study of ground-state and photoexcited (at 400 nm) honeycomb 5d iridate $\alpha$-$\mathrm{Li_2IrO_3}$. Steady-state RIXS spectra at the Iridium ${L_3}$-edge (11.214 keV) have been collected and are in very good agreement with data collected at synchrotrons. The time-resolved RIXS transients (pumped minus unpumped spectra) exhibit changes in the energy-loss region <2 eV, whose features mostly result from the hopping nature of 5d electrons in the honeycomb lattice. These changes are ascribed to modulations of the Ir-to-Ir intersite transition scattering efficiency, which we associate to a transient screening of the on-site Coulomb interaction., Comment: 17 + 7 pages, 4 + 6 figures

Interactions between the different degrees of freedom form the basis of many manifestations of intriguing physics in condensed matter. In this respect, quantifying the dynamics of normal modes that themselves arise from these interactions and how they interact with other excitations is of central importance. Of the different types of coupling that are often important, spin-lattice coupling is relevant to several sub-fields of condensed matter physics; examples include spintronics, high-TC superconductivity, and topological materials. While theories of materials where spin-lattice coupling is relevant can sometimes be used to infer the magnitude and character of this interaction, experimental approaches that can directly measure it are rare and incomplete. Here we use time-resolved X-ray diffraction to directly access the spin-lattice coupling by measuring both ultrafast atomic motion and the associated spin dynamics following the excitation of a coherent electromagnon by an intense THz pulse in a multiferroic hexaferrite. Comparing the dynamics of the two different components, one striking outcome is the different phase shifts relative to the driving field. This phase shift provides insight into the excitation process of such a coupled mode. This direct observation of combined lattice and magnetization dynamics paves the way to access the mode-selective spin-lattice coupling strength, which remains a missing fundamental parameter for ultrafast control of magnetism and is relevant to a wide variety of correlated electron physics., Comment: 4 figures

Nonequilibrium states of quantum materials can exhibit exotic properties and enable unprecedented functionality and applications. These transient states are inherently inhomogeneous, characterized by the formation of topologically protected structures, requiring nanometer spatial resolution on femtosecond timescales to resolve their evolution. Using ultrafast total x-ray scattering at a free electron laser and a sophisticated scaling analysis, we gain unique access to the dynamics on the relevant mesoscopic lengthscales. Our results provide direct evidence that ultrafast excitation of LaTe$_3$ leads to formation of topological vortex strings of the charge density wave. These dislocations of the charge density wave exhibit anomalous, subdiffusive dynamics, slowing the equilibration process, providing rare insight into the nonequilibrium mesoscopic response in a quantum material. Our findings establish a general framework to investigate properties of topological defects, which are expected to be ubiquitous in nonequilibrium phase transitions and may arrest equilibration and enhance competing orders.

Magnetic patterns can be controlled globally using fields or spin polarized currents. In contrast, the local control of the magnetization on the nanometer length scale remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate how magnetic domain patterns in a Tm-doped yttrium iron garnet (Tm:YIG) thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy can be permanently and locally imprinted by high intensity photon pulses of a hard x-ray transient grating (XTG). Micromagnetic simulations provide a qualitative understanding of the observed changes in the orientation of magnetic domains in Tm:YIG and XTG-induced changes. Optical-domain Transient Grating (TG) spectroscopy is a versatile background-free four-wave-mixing technique used to probe vibrational, magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom in the time domain. The newly developed coherent X-ray Free Electron Laser sources allow its extension to the X-ray regime. Xrays offer multiple advantages for TG: their large penetration depth allows probing the bulk properties of materials, their element-specificity can address core-excited states, and their short wavelengths create excitation gratings with unprecedented momentum transfer and spatial resolution. We demonstrate for the first time TG excitation in the hard X-ray range at 7.1 keV. In Bismuth Germanate (BGO), the nonresonant TG excitation generates coherent optical phonons detected as a function of time by diffraction of an optical probe pulse. This experiment demonstrates the ability to probe bulk properties of materials and paves the way for ultrafast coherent four-wave-mixing techniques using X-ray probes and involving nanoscale TG spatial periods., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Ultrafast electron delocalization induced by a fs laser pulse is a well-known process and is the initial step for important applications such as fragmentation of molecules or laser ablation in solids. It is well understood that an intense fs laser pulse can remove several electrons from an atom within its pulse duration. [1] However, the speed of electron localization out of an electron gas, the capture of an electron by ion, is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that electronic localization out of the conduction band can occur within only a few hundred femtoseconds. This ultrafast electron localization into 4f states has been directly quantified by transient x-ray absorption spectroscopy following photo-excitation of a Eu based correlated metal with a fs laser pulse. Our x-ray experiments show that the driving force for this process is either an ultrafast reduction of the energy of the 4f states, a change of their bandwidth or an increase of the hybridization between the 4f and the 3d states. The observed ultrafast electron localization process raises further basic questions for our understanding of electron correlations and their coupling to the lattice., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Optical pulses are routinely used to drive dynamical changes in the properties of solids. In quantum materials, many new phenomena have been discovered, including ultrafast transitions between electronic phases, switching of ferroic orders and nonequilibrium emergent behaviors such as photo-induced superconductivity. Understanding the underlying non-equilibrium physics requires detailed measurements of multiple microscopic degrees of freedom at ultrafast time resolution. Femtosecond x-rays are key to this endeavor, as they can access the dynamics of structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. Femtosecond optical pulses at mid-infrared frequencies have opened up the nonlinear control of lattice vibrations in solids. So far, all applications have relied on second order phonon nonlinearities, which are dominant at field strengths near 1 MVcm-1. In this regime, nonlinear phononics can transiently change the average lattice structure, and with it the functionality of a material. Here, we achieve an order-of-magnitude increase in field strength, and explore higher-order lattice nonlinearities. We drive up to five phonon harmonics of the A1 mode in LiNbO3. Phase-sensitive measurements of atomic trajectories in this regime are used to experimentally reconstruct the interatomic potential and to benchmark ab-initio calculations for this material. Tomography of the Free Energy surface by high-order nonlinear phononics will impact many aspects of materials research, including the study of classical and quantum phase transitions.

We study the response of the one-dimensional charge density wave in K0.3MoO3 to different types of excitation with femtosecond optical pulses. We compare the response to direct excitation of the lattice at mid-infrared frequencies with that to the injection of quasi-particles across the low-energy charge density wave gap and to charge transfer excitations in the near infrared. For all three cases, we observe a fluence threshold above which the amplitude-mode oscillation frequency is softened and the mode becomes increasingly damped. We show that all the data can be collapsed onto a universal curve in which the melting of the charge density wave occurs abruptly at a critical lattice excursion. These data highlight the existence of a universal stability limit for a charge density wave, reminiscent of the empirical Lindemann criterion for the stability of a crystal lattice.

The ability to manipulate ferroelectrics at ultrafast speeds has long been an elusive target for materials research. Coherently exciting the ferroelectric mode with ultrashort optical pulses holds the promise to switch the ferroelectric polarization on femtosecond timescale, two orders of magnitude faster compared to what is possible today with pulsed electric fields. Here, we report on the demonstration of ultrafast optical reversal of the ferroelectric polarization in LiNbO3. Rather than driving the ferroelectric mode directly, we couple to it indirectly by resonant excitation of an auxiliary high-frequency phonon mode with femtosecond mid-infrared pulses. Due to strong anharmonic coupling between these modes, the atoms are directionally displaced along the ferroelectric mode and the polarization is transiently reversed, as revealed by time-resolved, phase-sensitive second-harmonic generation. This reversal can be induced in both directions, a key pre-requisite for practical applications.
