In Indian subcontinent, pineapple (Ananas Comosus) leaves are left unused after fruits are harvested resulting in a waste of natural resources that contain textile-graded fibers. The present study intended to develop a pineapple leaf fiber extractor to chip off the waxy layer of the leaf. The machine comprised feeding conveyor, feed rollers, scratching roller, combing roller, frame and motor as a power source with a transmission unit. The performance was evaluated under different independent variables, i.e. rpm of the scratching roller (100, 150 and 200 rpm), types of secondary roller (combing, serration and without secondary roller) and moisture content of leaf (85 ± 3, 78 ± 3 and 71 ± 2%). Response surface method of optimization was employed to optimize the operational parameters. Best combination of operating parameters was found to be 150 rpm scratching rollers, combing type secondary rollers and moisture content of 85 ± 3%. It was found that the retting duration, processing efficiency, and fiber yield were 4 days, 88.9%, and 2.41% at optimized parameters, respectively. Further, throughput capacity and power requirement were found to be 33 ± 2 kg/hand 1.5 kWh respectively. The developed machine found to be effective in extracting waxy layer on leaves with minimal damage to useable fiber.

Oral focal mucinosis an oral counterpart of cutaneous focal mucinosis, is a rare disease of unknown etiology. Its pathogenesis may be due to the overproduction of hyaluronic acid by a fibroblast, at the expense of collagen production, resulting in focal myxoid degeneration of the connective tissue, primarily affecting the mucosa overlying the bone. Oral focal mucinosis occurs predonderantly in adults during the fourth and fifth decade of life, although it has been reported sparingly in children and adolescents. It has no distinctive clinical features, as the diagnosis is solely based on the histopathological features and treatment involves complete surgical excision. Recurrence is unreported. Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a rare fibro-osseous lesion of the jaw occurs at the early age of onset frequently under 15 years with a propensity to recur. It appears as a unilobulated/multilobulated lesion at an early stage followed by radiopaque appearance surrounded by radiolucent rimming at advanced stages. The psammomatous type of JOF (PsJOF) principally involves the bones of the orbit and paranasal sinuses. However in some cases, maxilla or rarely the mandible may be pretentious. Here, we report a challenging case of PsJOF in a 6-year-old child with a complaint of swelling imitating a cystic lesion in left back region of the lower jaw for 2 months. The authors propose that a careful examination and correlations of clinical, radiological, and histopathological features are essential to arrive at correct diagnosis and play a vital role in management of such patients. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the malignant salivary gland neoplasm chiefly occurred in minor salivary gland. One of the rare variant of MEC is intraosseous variant found in the jaws known as central mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Presently in this case report, we described a 28-year-old male diagnosed with central low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma subsequently with the presence of asymptomatic swelling with a history of trauma. Clinically mimicking a cystic lesion and radiographically gives an idea of mixed radio-opaque radiolucent lesion which creates a confusion to render a final diagnosis. The site, duration and history of the case are uncommon for the occurrence of intra-osseous malignant lesion of salivary glands. Today's practice in medicine has reached remarkable change mainly due to the advances in the field. Odontogenic tumors represent a spectrum of lesions ranging from hamartomas to benign and malignant neoplasms. Rarely, odontogenic tumors pose a challenge due to varied histological features. But appropriate and accurate diagnosis is crucial for further treatment and follow-up as these have an influence on the prognosis. In such situations, immunohistochemical. (IHC) markers play a significant role in the differentiating various lesions. Within its palette of histology, there are multiple histopathological presentations, many a times these features come in an intermixed pattern simulating different origin. We here, report such a case presented in a 70-year-old female came with a complaint of swelling in the posterior maxilla. The microscopic findings were indicative of a benign neoplasm. To know the nature of the lesion and arrive at a diagnosis, many IHC markers were used. Based on all these findings, a final diagnosis of unicystic ameloblastoma was arrived. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is a relatively uncommon benign lesion of odontogenic origin mainly affecting females in second decade of life, having a predilection for the anterior region of the maxilla. Histologically, it is composed of odontogenic epithelium in a variety of histopathological patterns in a mature, fibrous connective tissue stroma and characterized by slow but progressive growth. Very few cases of AOT associated with a dentigerous cyst have been reported in the literature. PubMed and Medline data showed a total of 11 cases of AOT associated with a dentigerous cyst in the literature. We present an additional case of an AOT arising from a dentigerous cyst around the crown of an unerupted upper canine in a 20-year-old female, which was clinically diagnosed as a dentigerous cyst. Histologically, the case showed proliferation of odontogenic epithelium in the form of whorls and islands typical of AOT associated with dentigerous cyst appearing thin reduced enamel like epithelium lining the cystic cavity, described previously. Background: Periapical lesions occur in response to chronic irritation in periapical tissue, generally resulting from an infected root canal. Specific etiological agents of induction, participating cell population and growth factors associated with maintenance and resolution of periapical lesions are incompletely understood. Among the cells found in periapical lesions, mast cells have been implicated in the inflammatory mechanism. Aim: Quantifications and the possible role played by mast cells in the periapical granuloma and radicular cyst. Hence, this study is to emphasize the presence (localization) and quantification of mast cells in periapical granuloma and radicular cyst. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 cases and out of which 15 of periapical granuloma and 15 radicular cyst, each along with the case details from the previously diagnosed cases in the department of oral pathology were selected for the study. The gender distribution showed male 8 (53.3%) and females 7 (46.7%) in periapical granuloma cases and male 10 (66.7%) and females 5 (33.3%) in radicular cyst cases. The statistical analysis used was unpaired t-test. Results: Mean mast cell count in periapical granuloma subepithelial and deeper connective tissue, was 12.40 (0.99%) and 7.13 (0.83%), respectively. The mean mast cell counts in subepithelial and deeper connective tissue of radicular cyst were 17.64 (1.59%) and 12.06 (1.33%) respectively, which was statistically significant. No statistical significant difference was noted among males and females. Conclusion: Mast cells were more in number in radicular cyst. Based on the concept that mast cells play a critical role in the induction of inflammation, it is logical to use therapeutic agents to alter mast cell function and secretion, to thwart inflammation at its earliest phases. Erythema Multiforme, (EM) an uncommon, acute inflammatory reactive mucocutaneous disorder and primary allergies confined to the oral mucosa. However the subsequent attacks can produce more severe forms of EM involving the skin. Manifestations of EM are varied and present a diagnostic dilemma because infections (particularly herpes simplex and mycoplasma pneumoniae) and drugs seem to predispose towards development of EM. We report two cases of EM in which drugs (Dioclofenac sodium & Amoxycilline) seems to be precipitating factor. In addition, the article reviews various aspects of EM as relevant to dental practice and highlight the associated potential etiologic agents, pathogenic mechanisms and therapies. Cancer is a disease involving complex multiple sequential irreversible dysregulated processes showing metastasis that results in morbidity and mortality. Metastasis is a complex biological course that begins with detachment of tumor cells from the primary tumor, spreading into the distant tissues and/or organs, invading through the lymphovascular structures followed by their survival in the circulation. Metastatic tumors to the oro-facial region are uncommon and may occur in the oral soft tissues or jawbones. The clinical presentation of metastatic tumors can be variable, which may lead to erroneous diagnosis or may create diagnostic dilemma. Therefore, they should be considered in the differential diagnosis of inflammatory and reactive lesions that are common to the oral region. Most of the literature on oral metastases involves either single case reports or reviews of these reported cases from scattered geographical areas. Hence this present article is an attempt to provide a detailed review of pathogenesis, epidemiological details including clinical and radiographic presentations, microscopic features and treatment of metastatic tumors to the jaws and oral cavity. Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FLCOD) is a rare, but well recognized condition that characteristically affects the jaws of middle aged women. It usually manifests radiographically as a diffuse, lobulated and irregularly shaped radio-opacities distributed throughout the alveolar processes which are usually bilaterally symmetrical. This condition has been classified as sclerosing osteitis, multiple enostoses, diffuse chronic osteomyelitis and gigantiform cementoma. The lesion is usually benign and requires no treatment unless cosmetically concerning or becomes symptomatic. For the asymptomatic patient the best management consists of regular recall examination with prophylaxis and maintenance of good oral hygiene According to the recent review of literature in 2006, only five patients of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia from India have been reported (less than 2%). Here we present such a rare case occurring in a 37 year old female who came with a swelling and dull pain in the lower right back teeth region since 1 and 1/2 years. Although developmental anomalies of tooth number are quite common in permanent dentition, concomitant occurrence of hypohyperdontia is a very rare mixed numeric anomalous condition of teeth. Very few cases of this condition have been reported in the English literature. Eagle's syndrome is not an uncommon condition, but less known to physicians, where an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament compresses the adjacent anatomical structures leading to orofacial pain. Diagnosis is made with appropriate radiological examination. Nonsurgical treatment options include reassurance, analgesia, and anti.inflammatory medications; and the surgical option includes a transoral or external approach. Here, we present a case report of a male patient, of age38 years, with a chief complaint of unilateral atypical orofacial pain on the right side of his face radiating to the neck region, for the last two months. Vegetable granuloma (VG) or pulse granuloma (PG) results from the implantation of food particles of plant or vegetable origin. It is usually seen in the periapical or in the sulcus areas. These lesions have been described as a distinct entity and classified into central and peripheral lesions according to the location. Central lesions are asymptomatic, whereas peripheral lesions present as painless sub-mucosal swellings. Many authors have postulated that food particles in VG or PG get implanted and are rapidly digested, and sometimes partly get altered by host responses. The cellulose part of plant foods being indigestible persists in the form of hyaline material, whereas the starch matter gets digested. This cellulose moiety invokes chronic granulomatous response. The aim of the study was to determine the effective pH of calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 against Enterococcus faecalis, the most frequently isolated bacterial species in endodontic failure. Solutions of Ca(OH)2 with different pH values of 9, 11 and 12.5 were prepared by dissolving 1 mg of Ca(OH)2 in distilled water. The test solutions were grouped as follows: Group I, vials containing phosphate buffered saline pH of 7.2 as control; Group II, aqueous calcium hydroxide with pH of 9; Group III, aqueous calcium hydroxide with pH of 11; Group IV, aqueous calcium hydroxide of pH 12.5.Forty sterile paper points were transferred to Trypticase Soy Agar broth containing Enterococcus faecalis for a period of 10 min, then transferred to vials containing 1 mL of the test solutions and incubated for 1 h at 37oC. The paper points were then transferred to neutralizing broth with glass beads to resuspend the microorganisms. Ten-fold serial dilutions were performed using aliquots of 250 μL from the broth and the same amount was plated onto blood agar plates. The plates were incubated anaerobically at 37oC for 24 h. The number of colony forming units for each dilution was counted using the colony counter. The inhibitory effects of different pH groups on the bacteria were as follows: Group IV > Group III > Group II > Group I in an ascending order. This study revealed that Ca(OH)2 at a pH 12.5 was effective in complete elimination of Enterococcus faecalis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is an expansile intra-osseous lesion of the jaw that emulate odontogenic lesions frequently seen in patients under 15 years of age. They are histologically characterized by the presence of fibrous stromal cells along with mineralized tissues. Clinically, these are characterized by early age of onset, histological patterns, high rate of recurrence and the aggressive local behavior. The differential diagnosis of JOF with other fibro-osseous lesions of the jaw should be made along with an essential microscopic examination and be largely based on the character of the calcified products of the tumor. The purpose of this article is to present a rare clinical case of the trabecular type of JOF and to describe its clinical, radiological and histological characteristics. The clinician should be aware of this type of lesion in order to be able to distinguish this it from other fibrous lesions if encountered in routine practice and for appropriate treatment to be carried out. The talon cusp is a relatively rare developmental anomaly characterized by the presence of an accessory cusp like structure projecting from the cingulum area or cementoenamel junction of the maxillary or mandibular anterior teeth in both the primary and permanent dentition. The prevalence of talon cusp varies considerably among Populations. These are usually seen in maxillary incisors unilaterally. An uncommon presentation of bilateral maxillary palatal talon cusp and its management is reported. The talon cusp can occur as an isolated finding or in association with other dental anomalies and has been reported in patients with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, Mohr syndrome, Sturge-Weber syndrome, incontinentia pigmenti achromians and Ellis-van Creveld syndrome. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) commonly presents as non-tender, enlarged lymph nodes, accompanied by diffuse symptoms of fatigue and low-grade intermittent fever and it is derived predominantly from the cells of the B lymphocyte series. NHL cases occur extra-nodally and in 3% of these cases the initial presentation may be in the oral cavity. Though extra-nodal NHL of the oral cavity is a rare finding, patients with oral lesions of NHL commonly present at the dental clinic in the first instance. A careful clinical evaluation supported by histopathological and other laboratory investigations will help in identifying the disease at an early stage, resulting in better prognosis. Any delay in diagnosis has important implications on the morbidity and mortality of the condition. Due to the rarity of intraoral NHL, we present one such a case with a complaint of tumor-like mass on the gingiva of lower molar region. Peripheral facial nerve palsy is the commonest cranial nerve motor neuropathy. The causes range from cerebrovascular accident to iatrogenic damage, but there are few reports of facial nerve paralysis attributable to odontogenic infections. In majority of the cases, recovery of facial muscle function begins within first three weeks after onset. This article reports a unique case of 32-year-old male patient who developed facial pain followed by unilateral facial nerve paralysis due to odontogenic infection. The treatment included extraction of the associated tooth followed by endodontic treatment of the neighboring tooth which resulted in recovery of facial nerve plasy. A thorough medical history and physical examination are the first steps in making any diagnosis. It is essential to rule out other causes of facial paralysis before making the definitive diagnosis, which implies the intervention. Schwannoma/Neurilemmoma is a benign mesenchymal tumor, contains no neural elements but arises from the nerve sheath or Schwann's cells. Neurilemmoma is encapsulated and exhibits a characteristic histologic pattern known as Antoni type A and Antoni type B with Verocay bodies. The lesion is partially encapsulated but well demarcated from overlying atrophic/ stretched oral mucosa. We present a case of schwannoma occurring in a 60 year old male edentulous patient with a chief complaint of firm, non tender swelling in anterior mandibular region which gradually increased in size. Interestingly, in many areas, traumatic neuromas like proliferations of cells of neural tissue with elongated, wavy nuclei arranged in swirls as well as haphazard manner were noted. The incidence of ectopic teeth has increased. In many cases, the etiology of ectopic teeth cannot be identified. Ectopic tooth in deciduous dentition period is very rare and information is limited about its causes and characteristics. The conditions commonly associated with an increased prevalence of ectopic teeth include cleft lip and palate, cleidocranial dysplasia, and Gardner syndrome. The diagnosis is made by the clinical and radiological examinations. The indication for extraction in ectopic teeth cases is in general determined by the presence of symptomatology, or by the need for preventing future complications. We present a case of an ectopic maxillary tooth in a 4 year-old boy. In addition, this report also addresses a young patient with a tooth in the oropharynx with the objective of non traumatic etiology, and such a clinical presentation is extremely rare.
