Those who know Peter Thorslev will know that he has surely been wincing at the threat of public acclamation. Peter is indeed formal and analytical, qualities not surprising in an English professor, but qualities all the more imposing which invoked to draw the steam out of blowzy confusions in roars of laughter, onto the standard short list of those books many insist their students read. Peter's book makes for some discomfort, of course, because it goes, with aggressive criticism, to the heart of all Romantic and much of all nineteenth-century discourse.
