Abstract

Reliable and secure operation of power systems becomes increasingly challenging as the share of volatile generation rises, leading to largely changing dynamics. Typically, the architecture and structure of controllers in power systems, such as voltage controllers of power generators, are fixed during the design and buildup of the network. As replacing existing controllers is often undesired and challenging, setpoint adjustments, as well as tuning of the controller parameters, are possibilities to counteract large disturbances and changing dynamics. We present an approach for fast and computationally efficient adaptation of parameters of structured controllers based on H-infinity optimization, also referred to as structured H-infinity controller synthesis, tailored towards power systems. Conditions are established that guarantee that the approach leads to stability.The results are verified in a testbed microgrid consisting of six inverters and a load bank, as well as simulation studies. The proposed method improves the system robustness, as well as the time-response to step disturbances and allows structured controller tuning even for large networks.

Abstract

We report on ground- and excited state transport through an electrostatically defined few-hole quantum dot in bilayer graphene in both parallel and perpendicular applied magnetic fields. A remarkably clear level scheme for the two-particle spectra is found by analyzing finite bias spectroscopy data within a two-particle model including spin and valley degrees of freedom. We identify the two-hole ground-state to be a spin-triplet and valley-singlet state. This spin alignment can be seen as Hund's rule for a valley-degenerate system, which is fundamentally different to quantum dots in carbon nano tubes and GaAs-based quantum dots. The spin-singlet excited states are found to be valley-triplet states by tilting the magnetic field with respect to the sample plane. We quantify the exchange energy to be 0.35meV and measure a valley and spin g-factor of 36 and 2, respectively.

Abstract

We report a versatile and cost-effective way of controlling the unsaturated loss, modulation depth and saturation fluence of graphene-based saturable absorbers (GSAs), by changing the thickness of a spacer between SLG and a high-reflection mirror. This allows us to modulate the electric field intensity enhancement at the GSA from 0 up to 400%, due to the interference of incident and reflected light at the mirror. The unsaturated loss of the SLG-mirror-assembly can be reduced to$\sim$0. We use this to mode-lock a VECSEL from 935 to 981nm. This approach can be applied to integrate SLG into various optical components, such as output coupler mirrors, dispersive mirrors, dielectric coatings on gain materials. Conversely, it can also be used to increase absorption (up to 10%) in various graphene based photonics and optoelectronics devices, such as photodetectors.

Abstract

We report on a photoconductive gain effect in two-dimensional arrays of gold nanoparticles, in which alkane molecules are inserted. The nanoparticle arrays are formed by a self-assembly process from alkanethiol-coated gold nanoparticles, and subsequently they are patterned on a Si/SiO2 chip by a microcontact printing technique. We find that the photoconductance of the arrays is strongly enhanced at the frequency of the surface plasmon of the nanoparticles. We interpret the observation as a bolometric enhancement of the conductance of the nanoparticle arrays upon excitation of the surface plasmon resonance.

Abstract

Hazardous materials encountered during building renovation or demolition processes not only result in uncertainty in cost estimation and the lead time but also hampers material recyclability and reuse. Therefore, the paper discusses the possibility of predicting the extent of the hazardous materials, including asbestos, PCB, mercury, and CFC, through data mining techniques based on registered records. Pre-demolition audits contain observation data that can be used as a sample for statistical prediction through careful processing. By developing an innovative approach of merging data from environmental inventories with building registers, the positive ratio of remaining hazardous materials in the Gothenburg building stock can be estimated. The study highlights the challenges of creating a training dataset by completing information from the existing environmental inventory, providing new insight into digital protocol development for enhancing material circularity., QC 20220613

Abstract

Research was conducted to examine a laboratory scale continuous flow stirred tank reactor in which the exothermic iron(III)-nitrate-catalyzed oxidation of ethanol with hydrogen peroxide to ethanal and acetic acid occurs. The behavior of the system was analyzed under various conditions using the volumetric flow of the cooling water as an experimental bifurcation parameter. Experimental results were compared with model calculations such as integration and continuation in one and two parameters.

Abstract

PURPOSE The West German Study Group PlanB trial evaluated an anthracycline-free chemotherapy standard (six cycles of docetaxel and cyclophosphamide [TC]) in the routine treatment of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative early breast cancer (EBC). PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with pT1 to pT4c, all pN+, and pN0/high-risk EBC were eligible. High-risk pN0 was defined by one or more of the following: pT greater than 2, grade 2 to 3, high urokinase-type plasminogen activator/plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, hormone receptor (HR) negativity, and less than 35 years of age. After an early amendment, all HR-positive tumors underwent recurrence score (RS) testing, with chemotherapy omission recommended in RS less than or equal to 11 pN0 to pN1 disease. Patients were randomly assigned to four cycles of epirubicin (E)(90)/cyclophoshamide (C)(600) followed by four cycles of docetaxel (T)(100) or six cycles of T75C600 (administered once every 3 weeks). The primary end point was disease-free survival (DFS); secondary end points were overall survival (OS) and safety. The protocol specified P = .05 for a noninferiority margin of 4.4% for all patients combined. RESULT Of the 3,198 registered patients, 348 (RS <= 11) omitted chemotherapy, and 401 were not randomly assigned. The intention-to-treat population included 2,449 patients (1,227 EC-T v 1,222 TC: postmenopausal, 62.2% v60.8%; pNO, 58.2% v59.5%; pT1, 57.6% v52.3%; HR positive, 81.4% v82.2%; RS greater than 25 [in H.R-positive patients], 26.2% v 27.5%). Within the safety population (1,167 v 1,178 patients), 87.5% v 93.0% completed therapy. After a 60-month median follow-up, 5-year outcomes were similar in the EC-T and TC arms (DFS, 89.6% [95% CI, 87.9% to 91.5%] v89.9% [95% CI, 88.1% to 91.8%]; OS, 94.5% [95% CI, 93.1% to 95.9%] v94.7% [95% CI, 93.3% to 96.1%]). Abstract

Low frequency sounding radars should be able to probe the Martian subsurface layers down to varying depths, depending on the geo-electrical properties of the sounded sites. We present in this work four frequency dependent geo-electrical models of the Martian subsurface in the 1-20 MHz frequency band, based on laboratory electromagnetic characterization of Martian soil analogues. Those models correspond to local Martian sites, where we considered particular interest for the search of water using mainly the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) instrument of the Netlander mission. Results and discussion are also valid for both sounding experiments MARSIS and SHARAD. The four models of the Martian subsurface are designed to represent terrains where recent fluvial like features suggest the presence of near subsurface ground ice and probably liquid water. We performed measurements on volcanic and sedimentary materials that may be present on these sites under the appropriate geophysical conditions that may exist in those terrains. We then simulated the backscattered radar echo arising from each site in the 2 MHz frequency band, using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) algorithm, in order to evaluate the instrument performances to probe the subsurface stratigraphy of each site. Our results confirm that the near subsurface rich iron oxide mineralogy controls the instrument performances in terms of penetration depth and signal to noise ratio in the 2 MHz frequency band. We also discuss the geophysical and geo-electrical sounding conditions that could lead to an ambiguous detection of shallow subsurface water on Mars for the Netlander GPR. Finally we hope to present by the conference time a terrestrial test analogue site selected according to those creteria where deep sub-surface water have been detected 600 m deep using a prototype of the 2 MHz Netlander GPR in a field survey performed last febrary in the eastern part of the Egyptian desert.

46. Optimized SESAMs for kilowatt-level ultrafast lasers

Abstract

We present a thorough investigation of surface deformation and thermal properties of high-damage threshold large-area semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) designed for kilowatt average power laser oscillators. We compare temperature rise, thermal lensing, and surface deformation of standard SESAM samples and substrate-removed SESAMs contacted using different techniques. We demonstrate that for all cases the thermal effects scale linearly with the absorbed power, but the contacting technique critically affects the strength of the temperature rise and the thermal lens of the SESAMs (i.e. the slope of the linear change). Our best SESAMs are fabricated using a novel substrate-transfer direct bonding technique and show excellent surface flatness (with non-measureable radii of curvature (ROC), compared to astigmatic ROCs of up to 10 m for standard SESAMs), order-of-magnitude improved heat removal, and negligible deformation with absorbed power. This is achieved without altering the saturation behavior or the recovery parameters of the samples. These SESAMs will be a key enabling component for the next generation of kilowatt-level ultrafast oscillators.

Abstract

Particulate processes can be modeled by means of populations balances. This is an important class of nonlinear partial differential equations with many applications in chemical and biochemical engineering. Major challenges are multidimensional problems, coupling with nonideal flow fields and feedback control. Possible solution approaches to these problems are presented and illustrated with different types of process applications including fluidized bed spray granulation, crystallization and influenza vaccine production processes. Он представляет собой важный класс нелинейных дифференциальных уравнений в частных производных и широко применяются в химической и биохимической инженерии. Основными проблемами при этом являются многомерные задачи, взаимосвязь с неидеальными полями течения и управление с обратными связями. В работе представлены возможные подходы к решению этих задач на примере различных процессов, таких как грануляция в кипящем слое, кристаллизация и процессы производства вакцин от гриппа. Процеси обробки часток можна моделювати, використовуючи популяційний баланс. Він є важливим класом нелінійних диференціальних рівнянь з частинними похідними та широко застосовується в хімічній та біохімічної інженерії. Основними проблемами тут є багатовимірні задачі, взаємозв’язок з неідеальними полями течії та керування зі зворотними зв’язками. У роботі представлені можливі підходи до вирішення цих задач на приклад і різних процесів, таких як грануляція в киплячому шарі, кристалізація і процеси виробництва вакцин від грипу.

Abstract

An experimental investigation of two coupled thermokinetic oscillators that consist of two continuous flow stirred tank reactors (CSTRs), performed via four different ways is reported. Exothermic iron-(III)-nitrate catalyzed oxidation of ethanol with hydrogen peroxide to ethanal and acetic acid is the system used to model a set of ordinary differential equations.
