Abstract

Assessment of the critical nature of a material for an application is a relevant notion to anticipate supply issues for an application and a territory. To establish a list of the critical materials, we have developed an approach taking into account geological scarcity, deployment logistics and societal aspects. This article aims to apply this framework to photovoltaic (PV) module interconnection. We draw the conclusion that even if concerns of critical materials are focused on Silver (Ag) scarcity (on metallization part), interconnection materials such as Tin (Sn) and Bismuth (Bi) are even more critical, mainly due to their mostly dispersive uses. This leads us to a standard module conception analysis and emphasizes the interest of improving a more modularized PV module architecture in order to improve high value recycling. An example of such a conception is given with NICE concept. Another example offering a way to optimize metallization conception toward a less consuming pattern is also described.

Abstract

This special session paper introduces the Horizon Europe NEUROPULS project, which targets the development of secure and energy-efficient RISC-V interfaced neuromorphic accelerators using augmented silicon photonics technology. Our approach aims to develop an augmented silicon photonics platform, an FPGA-powered RISC-V-connected computing platform, and a complete simulation platform to demonstrate the neuromorphic accelerator capabilities. In particular, their main advantages and limitations will be addressed concerning the underpinning technology for each platform. Then, we will discuss three targeted use cases for edge-computing applications: Global National Satellite System (GNSS) anti-jamming, autonomous driving, and anomaly detection in edge devices. Abstract

Color management of integrated photovoltaics must meet two criteria of performance: provide maximum conversion efficiency and allow getting the chosen colors with an appropriate brightness, more particularly when using side by side solar cells of different colors. As the cooling conditions are not necessarily optimal, we need to take into account the influence of the heat transfer and temperature. In this article, we focus on the color space and brightness achieved by varying the antireflective properties of flat silicon solar cells. We demonstrate that taking into account the thermal effects allows freely choosing the color and adapting the brightness with a small impact on the conversion efficiency, except for dark blue solar cells. This behavior is especially true when heat exchange by convection is low. Our optical simulations show that the perceived color, for single layer ARC, is not varying with the position of the observer, whatever the chosen color. The use of a double layer ARC adds flexibility to tune the wanted color since the color space is greatly increased in the green and yellow directions. Last, choosing the accurate material allows both bright colors and high conversion efficiency at the same time.

4. Influence of patterning the TCO layer on the series resistance of thin film HIT solar cells

Abstract

Thin HIT solar cells combine efficient surface passivation and high open circuit voltage leading to high conversion efficiencies. They require a TCO layer in order to ease carriers transfer to the top surface fingers. This Transparent Conductive Oxide layer induces parasitic absorption in the low wavelength range of the solar spectrum that limits the maximum short circuit current. In case of thin film HIT solar cells, the front surface is patterned in order to increase the effective life time of photons in the active material, and the TCO layer is often deposited with a conformal way leading to additional material on the sidewalls of the patterns. In this article, we propose an alternative scheme with a local etching of both the TCO and the front a-Si:H layers in order to reduce the parasitic absorption. We study how the local resistivity of the TCO evolves as a function of the patterns, and demonstrate how the increase of the series resistance can be compensated in order to increase the conversion efficiency.

Abstract

The integration of Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPADs) in CMOS Fully Depleted Silicon-On-Insulator (FD-SOI) technology under a buried oxide (BOX) layer and a silicon film containing transistors makes it possible to realize a 3D SPAD at the chip level. In our study, a nanostructurated layer created by an optimized arrangement of Shallow Trench Isolation (STI) above the photosensitive zone generates constructive interferences and consequently an increase in the light sensitivity in the frontside illumination. A simulation methodology is presented that couples electrical and optical data in order to optimize the STI trenches (size and period) and to estimate the Photon Detection Probability (PDP) gain. Then, a test chip was designed, manufactured, and characterized, demonstrating the PDP improvement due to the STI nanostructuring while maintaining a comparable Dark Count Rate (DCR). Abstract

International audience; Given the exponential growth of deployed photovoltaic (PV) energy sources, we have to question how to make such growth sustainable. Transition at global scale from fossil fuels to mineral-based renewable energies will indeed induce a sharp turn in materials supply chains. The concept of critical materials covers various sources of supply tensions. More precisely in PV sector, concerns grow for the last few years about Silver price volatility, relative to its scarcity, or about Indium related to its availability.Raw material criticity definition is open to question. No consensus seems to arise yet from literature in order to define influencing factors on criticity. For this study, five supply hazard criteria are selected in order to represent accurately each material supply situation: geological, logistical, geopolitical, industrial and commercial. With those criteria, the materials (and their substitutes) used in PV modules interconnection are listed and for each one, criticity is assessed. List of those elements is the following: Aluminum, Bismuth, Copper, Indium, Nickel, Silver and Tin.Although different dynamics may be observed depending on the concerned material, the main conclusion is that, except Aluminum, all listed elements supplies should face supply tensions by 2050, or even 2030 for the most critical ones [1]. It is important to note that for most of these materials, PV sector has not triggered its critical status.Two material groups should be distinguished. In the first hand, high production and consumption volumes materials (Aluminum and Copper) should not restrict PV energy production capacity expansion projections in the short term but could adversely affect growth in the mid term: by 2050, Copper demand to electrify the whole society should deplete global reserves so its supply is unreliable; it is then compulsory to deeply rethink energy networks, as well as implement a circular approach (reduce, repair, reuse and finally recycle). Moreover, aluminum needed volume for PV on TW scale would induce huge CO2 emissions [2]. On the other hand, other materials (Bismuth, Indium, Silver, and Tin) are used in PV interconnection in dispersive ways: even though PV sector requires a limited amount, they are difficult to recover. These applications must evolve otherwise the known reserves will end around 2040.It draws one main conclusion in the specific case of PV sector: conception has to evolve from dispersive cells interconnection processes, such as low temperature soldering or conductive adhesive bonding. In general, conception step has to focus on end-of-life step to introduce more circular methodologies. Change may happen at three levels: process, material or architecture. Changing or optimizing the deposition process is largely covered in literature over the last 15 years and Silver consumption reduction potential seems to reach its limit [3]. Alternative materials have been rising for the last 5 years and could have a great impact on metallization criticity. In the meantime, critical materials consumption in interconnection could further shrink with a disruptive innovation in module architecture. A few innovation examples, from NICE concept to non-uniform metallization, will be presented.

Abstract

International audience; Many applications require colored surfaces while maximizing photons to pass through with no optical losses. As the perceived color depends on the spectral content and the number of reflected photons for each wavelength, it is necessary to consider not only the chromatic content but also the brightness. As a first application example, photovoltaic modules could see their acceptance in urban situations greatly improved if their color could be controlled while maximizing the number of photons used for energy conversion. In this case, it is important to limit light brightness to avoid glare when light coming from the sun is reflected directly. As another example, a colored and semi-transparent glass layer in the infrared could efficiently protect sensors while camouflaging them, such as lidar in automotive applications. We propose a theoretical study for multicolor applications, considering 2D partially etched grating waveguide structures that behave as a perfect broadband antireflection coating while the residual layer couples light in a waveguided mode in order to reflect only a particular photon band. This strategy allows to produce a large variety of colors and the use of non-absorbing materials avoids any optical loss. The width of the resonance peak is a crucial parameter for balancing brightness in multicolor applications. In the second part, we developed a method for a fast optimization of the geometrical parameters and we applied it to obtain the three primary colors with strong geometrical constraints, so that such structures could be manufactured in a single step by nanoimprint. Finally, we propose some improvements of these structures, in particular by reducing broadband reflection to obtain more saturated colors, or to improve the angular behavior of these structures.

Abstract

National audience; A ce jour, les meilleurs rendements de conversion photovoltaïque ont été obtenus avec des cellules solaires multi-jonctions à base de matériaux semi-conducteurs III-V monocristallins sous éclairement solaire concentré. Cependant, le recours aux substrats III-V dans la fabrication de cellules solaires à haut rendement pose le problème des coûts conséquents de ces matériaux. Afin de relever le défi stratégique d’un coût de 0.25-0.5 Euro/Wp, nous avons opté pour l’utilisation du substrat silicium, qui est très abondant sur Terre et donc bon marché. L’intégration monolithique d’hétérostructures III-V sur silicium permettrait de concilier à la fois hauts rendements et bas coûts, tout en capitalisant sur une filière industrielle éprouvée. Nous explorons deux approches de cellules III-V sur Silicium : les cellules tandem et les hétérojonctions.Une cellule solaire tandem, constituée d’une cellule III-V à 1.7 eV sur une cellule c-Si à 1.1 eV, permettrait théoriquement d’atteindre 37% de rendement sous le spectre AM 1.5G. Les cellules top envisagées sont constituées d’un absorbeur en GaAs0,1P0.88N0.02 qui présente un gap pseudo direct de 1.7 eV et un parfait accord de maille avec le substrat silicium, entouré de couches dopées GaP [1]. Après avoir optimisé l’absorbeur [2], nous présentons une étude de l’extraction des porteurs en fonction du dopage n de la couche inférieure de GaP ainsi qu’un optimisation du contact p supérieur. La hausse du dopage n de 2.1018cm-3 à 8.1018 cm-3 est bénéfique pour le rendement car elle diminue l’énergie de seuil d’absorption et permet d’améliorer le courant JSC sans modifier les autres paramètres de la cellule. Une difficulté de ces cellules est aussi d’obtenir des contacts ohmiques sur GaP. L’ajout d’une fine couche de GaAsP p++ de 15 nm en surface de l’échantillon nous a permis de réaliser des contacts ohmiques à l’aide d’alliages habituels sur GaAs tel Ti/Pt/Au au lieu de métaux spécifiques pour le GaP tels Pd/Zn/Pd. Nous explorons aussi les propriétés photovoltaïques des hétérojonctions GaP (n) sur Si (p) qui permettraient d’éviter l’absorption de la couche Si(n) usuelle. Les premières mesures d’EQE montrent une amélioration de l’absorption à haute énergie mais les cellules solaires réalisées présentent des résistances série trop importantes pour être exploitables. Abstract

We apply advanced ray tracing to predict the color of an encapsulated solar cell. Previous studies have predicted the color from the thickness and refractive index of the antireflection coating and encapsulants. Here, we demonstrate how other effects influence the color significantly, applying ray tracing to account for texture, for direct and diffuse insolation, for scattering, and for the observer angle. Despite the sophistication of the ray tracing, solutions for each simulation are attained within seconds. With an accurate and quick way to predict a module's color, researchers can avoid costly experimentation when (i) predicting how cell color will change after encapsulation, (ii) determining production tolerances to limit color variability within a cell or module and (iii) optimizing for a particular color for BIPV applications. Abstract

29th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1461-1469, Nanopatterning has recently demonstrated to be an efficient method for boosting the light absorption of thin films (< 50 μm) of crystalline silicon. However, convincing solar cell results are still missing. The goal of the European project PhotoNVoltaics is to investigate the impacts that nanopatterns have on thin crystalline silicon solar cells and to identify the conditions for their efficient integration. The present contribution presents the main findings of the consortium so far. Optical modeling and optimization of nanopatterned thin-film c-Si cells have indicated a few trends regarding the design of the optimum pattern for 1-40 μm thin foils: merged inverted nanopyramids, with their progressive profile seem to provide the best combination of antireflective and light trapping properties, together with negligible surface damage and best coating template for subsequent process steps. But despite the high Jsc enhancement that these nanopatterns are expected to bring, and despite the higher efficiency of these nanophotonic structures for 1-2 μm-thin foils, the absolute Jsc values indicate that thicker foils will have to be preferred if direct competition with wafer-based and thin-film technologies is concerned. An ideal structure is taking shape as an IBC heterojunction cell, with a frontside nanopattern and a thickness of 40 μm.

Abstract

International audience; We first introduce selected approaches, concepts and technological strategies to control light collection and absorption in photovoltaic ultrathin film cells for both solar and indoor light harvesting. We then illustrate light trapping into photonic crystal structures with examples of structures and devices, including 100nm thick hydrogenated amorphous silicon and 1µm thick crystalline layer solar cells. Finally, we discuss on the interest of photonic crystal structures to enhance non linear optical processes like down conversion for 3rd generation solar cells.

Abstract

To follow the evolution imposed by Moore's law, digital circuits are becoming more and more parallelized with a large number of independent computational units. Optics may be used to provide them the necessary very high bandwidth, as traditional electrical links begin to suffer from their high consumption per transferred bit. In such cases, developing CMOS compatible optical interconnects can be necessary. If light transport around wavelength 1.55 μm is quite easily obtained thanks to the Silicon/Silica couple, obtaining laser sources is much more difficult because silicon (indirect gap) can not be used to provide optical gain. An alternate solution consists in using molecular bonding of III-V semiconductor based dies onto silicon wafers. In this thesis, we only focus on a very specific source based on Whispering Galery Modes (WGM) inresonators with circular symmetry, with a few micrometers radius. We will see how to take advantage of perturbative elements such as the electrical contacts (necessary absorbing) to decrease the lasing threshold. The use of a semi analytical model provides ultra fast design of these monolithic source, optimizing the the geometry and position of the contacting electrodes. Light collection in an optical waveguide by evanescent coupling to the source leads to complexinteractions. Modelling them from Coupled Mode Theory demonstrates how it works, and how to take advantage of them to control the lasing wavelength. The optical waveguide itself can then be used to promote a single wavelength emission. Laying out active elements around the collecting waveguide, one can get modulated and ultra-compact sources for wavelength tuning or mode hoping applications, with an external active control. The last part of this thesis provides experimental results obtained with a 200 mm pilot line at CEALETI, using CMOS compatible processes. Feasibility of the sources suggested in the previous chapters is demonstrated with their integration in a complete optical link (source, routing and detection)., Afin de poursuivre la croissance imposée par la loi de Moore, les circuits numériques deviennent de plus en plus parallèles, avec un nombre important d'unités de calcul distinctes. L'utilisation de l'optique peut s'avérer intéressante pour leur assurer une bande passante élevée. Au contraire, les liens traditionnels (électriques) commencent à montrer leurs limites en terme de consommation par unité d'information échangée. Dans un tel contexte, il est alors nécessaire de développer des interconnexions optiques dont les procédés de fabrication restent compatibles avec le standard CMOS. Si le transport de la lumière est aisé à obtenir au voisinage de 1.55 μm avec le couple Silicium/Silice, l'obtention de sources LASER est nettement plus difficile puisque le silicium (gap indirect) ne permet pas de réaliser le gain optique requis. Une solution consiste alors à reporter par collage moléculaire des vignettes de composés à base de semi-conducteurs III-V.Dans cette thèse, nous nous intéresserons uniquement à une source bien particulière, basée sur les modes de galerie (WGM) dans les résonateurs à symétrie circulaire, de quelques micromètres de rayon. Nous verrons comment tirer profit des éléments a priori perturbateurs que sont les contacts électriques (absorbants) de sorte à diminuer le seuil LASER. La mise en place d'un modèle semianalytique permet d'obtenir un dimensionnement ultra-rapide de la source monolithique obtenue, en optimisant la géométrie et la position des électrodes de contact. La collection de la lumière dans un guide par couplage évanescent donne lieu à de complexes interactions. Là encore, une modélisation à partir de la théorie des modes couplés a permis d'en comprendre les rouages, et d'en tirer profit. Le guide lui-même peut alors servir à favoriser une seule et unique longueur d'onde d'émission. Avec des éléments actifs situés à proximité de ces guides, on peut même obtenir une source ultra-compacte et modulable dont on contrôle la longueur d'onde d'émission par un élément extérieur au LASER. La dernière partie de cette thèse fournit des résultats expérimentaux, obtenus avec une chaine "pilote" sur des wafers 200 mm (CEA LETI) en se limitant à des procédés CMOS. On démontre donc la faisabilité des sources proposées dans les chapitres précédents ainsi que la possibilité de les intégrer un lien optique complet (source, routage et détection).

Abstract

Color management of integrated photovoltaics must meet two criteria of performance: provide maximum conversion efficiency and allow getting the chosen colors with an appropriate brightness, more particularly when using side by side solar cells of different colors. As the cooling conditions are not necessarily optimal, we need to take into account the influence of the heat transfer and temperature. In this article, we focus on the color space and brightness achieved by varying the antireflective properties of flat silicon solar cells. We demonstrate that taking into account the thermal effects allows freely choosing the color and adapting the brightness with a small impact on the conversion efficiency, except for dark blue solar cells. This behavior is especially true when heat exchange by convection is low. Our optical simulations show that the perceived color, for single layer ARC, is not varying with the position of the observer, whatever the chosen color. The use of a double layer ARC adds flexibility to tune the wanted color since the color space is greatly increased in the green and yellow directions. Abstract

Fabrication of industrial thin-film crystalline silicon solar cells remains challenging because of the high level of light trapping and surface passivation required to achieve a good conversion efficiency, while reducing the process cost. This work proposes a solution of rear side reflector supplying both passivation and light trapping, and guaranteeing compatibility with a laser process for local opening in order to use the passivated emitter and rear cell architecture. The key element is the use of substoichiometric silicon oxide deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition with a higher silicon concentration than the usual nearly stoichiometric oxide. This material is absorbent at usual ultraviolet laser wavelengths, and thus allows laser ablation with limited substrate heat, greatly reducing substrate damage after ablation. A layer of this oxide is incorporated into a SiOx/SiNy dielectric stack, which shows the expected qualities in term of passivation and reflectivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
