18. Evaluation of a quasi‐dimeric eugenol derivative as repellent against the stored grain insect pest Sitophilusoryzae (Coleoptera Curculionidae).

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Essential oils (EOs) and their chemical components are often proposed as an alternative to synthetic pesticides for pest control of foodstuff insect pests. However, their low persistence and strong, spicy odour, make them poorly suitable for use to protect food. Modification of the EOs components molecules increases their molecular weight and reduce their volatility. However, the effectiveness of such modified molecules has, so far, not been tested against stored food insect pests. In this study, the intensity and the duration of the repellence against the insect pest Sitophilus oryzae of a recently synthesized quasi‐dimeric eugenol derivative (ED) (C18H20O4) were compared to those of eugenol and three eugenol related compounds. The hypothesis tested was that by its higher molecular weight and two functional groups the ED would overcome the low persistence and strong and spicy odour drawback of eugenol without compromising the repellence against insects. RESULTS: The insect behavioural tests showed a greater repellence and persistence of ED than eugenol and the three eugenol related compounds against S. oryzae. The sensory analysis of ED by panel test indicated that ED is significantly less odorous than eugenol without any spicy nor balsamic nuances in its smell profile. CONCLUSIONS: Because of its high repellence against insects and its low smell intensity for humans, ED could represent a valid repellent for the control of foodstuffs insect pests. © 2022 The Authors. Abstract

A profound influence of water has previously been detected in the complexation of the enantiomers of methyl 2-chloropropanoate (MCP) and the chiral selector octakis(3-O-butanoyl-2,6-di-O-pentyl)-γ-cyclodextrin (Lipodex-E) in NMR and sensor experiments. We therefore investigated the retention behavior of MCP enantiomers on Lipodex-E by gas chromatography (GC) under hydrous conditions. Addition of water to the N2 carrier gas modestly reduced the retention factors k of the enantiomers, notably for the second eluted enantiomer (S)-MCP. This resulted in an overall decrease of enantioselectivity -ΔS,R (ΔG) in the presence of water. The effect was fully reversible. Consequently, for a conditioned column in the absence of residual water, the determined thermodynamic data, i.e. ΔS,R (ΔH) = -12.64 ± 0.08 kJ mol(-1) and ΔS,R (ΔS) = -28.18 ± 0.23 J K(-1) mol(-1), refer to a true 1:1 complexation process devoid of hydrophobic hydration.

Abstract

Mono- and bis-alkaloid chiral auxiliaries with anthraquinone or phenanthryl cores were probed as chiral solvating agents (CSAs) for the enantiodiscrimination of chiral cyclic hemiesters. The dimeric anthraquinone derivative and the monomeric phenanthryl one showed remarkable efficiency in the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) differentiation of enantiomeric mixtures of hemiesters. An anthraquinone analogous with a single alkaloid unit was remarkably less effective. The conformational prevalence of the chiral auxiliaries were ascertained by NMR.

Abstract

Neohexanol (2,2-dimethyl-1-butanol, CH3CH2C(CH3)2CH2OH) and some of its isomers, differing for the positions of the OH and CH3 substituents, constitute a very interesting class of compounds showing a rich polymorphism with several solid-solid phase transitions. Indeed, due to their globular shape and to the possibility to associate through hydrogen bonds, at low temperatures they give rise to both plastic crystalline phases and glasses. In particular, some of these compounds show orientationally disordered crystals (ODIC) due to the ease of rotational motions of the molecules in the solid state [1]. Fast field cycling (FFC) NMR relaxometry is a very important technique for obtaining information on dynamic properties, allowing internal, overall and collective molecular motions to be investigated by means of measurement and analysis of 1H longitudinal relaxation times over a wide Larmor frequency range (10 kHz - 40 MHz). In particular, 1H FFC NMR relaxometry has been successfully applied in the study of motions related to the glass transition process in viscous liquids and polymers [2]. On the other hand, solid-state NMR spectroscopy is a very powerful technique for the study of dynamics, providing, through a combination of different experiments and observable nuclei, complementary information with respect to FFC NMR. In this work 1H FFC NMR relaxometry and solid-state 1H and 13C NMR experiments have been applied to neohexanol and three of its isomers (3,3-dimethyl-2-butanol, 2,3-dimethyl-2-butanol and 3,3-dimethyl-1-butanol) in the temperature range from -60 to 30 °C. In particular, 1H spin lattice relaxation times (T1) have been measured at Larmor frequencies from 10 kHz to 35 MHz with FFC techniques and at 400 MHz with Saturation-Recovery experiments. Moreover, static 1H and 13C NMR spectra have been recorded under 1H high-power decoupling. The spectroscopic and relaxation data acquired for the different isomers have been compared and analyzed to obtain information on the dynamic processes occurring in the different solid phases as well as to establish relationships between chemical structure and dynamic properties.
