Objective: There is scarce research on the effects of mindfulness in individual therapy. As many practitioners integrate mindfulness exercises into individual therapy, empirical evidence is of high clinical relevance. Method: We investigated the effects of a session?introducing intervention with mindfulness elements (SIIME) in a randomized, controlled design. The effects of SIIME on therapeutic alliance and symptomatic outcome were compared with progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and treatment?as?usual (TAU) control conditions. The sample comprised 162 patients with anxiety and depression. Results: Multilevel modeling revealed a significant symptom reduction and significant increase of alliance over the course of therapy. There were no significant time-condition interactions on outcome and alliance, indicating the comparable efficiency of all three treatment conditions. Conclusions: We found no advantage of SIIME versus PMR and TAU. Add?on mindfulness might not improve individual therapy related to alliance and outcome. (DIPF/Orig.)

Background: The modules that make up theoretical and practicaltraining in behavioral therapy often bear little relationship toone another. Training, practice intervals, and integration into relevanttherapeutic interventions need to be interlinked moreclosely. This manuscript describes an attempt to address thistopic by investigating mindfulness interventions. Method: Mindfulnessworkshops with intervals for self-discovery were facilitatedby 27 therapy instructors. Building on this, standardized session-introducing interventions with mindfulness elements wereintegrated into the training therapy in 36 patients. The programwas analyzed in terms of acceptance, feasibility, and effectiveness.Analyses of variance were used to compare the symptomreduction (Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), Brief Symptom Inventory(BSI)) achieved between the first session and the 15thsession against that of a control group consisting of patients receivingstandard treatment. Results: Positive experiences ofmindfulness were disclosed during qualitative interviews. In general,the acceptance and feasibility of the theory-practice networkwas rated as high. According to statements made by the therapyinstructors, meaningful interfaces were established between theoreticaland practical training. In terms of symptom reduction,patients in the mindfulness group and the group receiving standardtreatment showed similar results; there were no significantvariances in this respect. Conclusion: The combination of mindfulnessworkshops and opening exercises building on these wasfound to be meaningful, but the effects were not clinically strongerthan those achieved by standard treatment. Future researchshould aim to investigate theory-practice networks in other areas(e.g., Progressive Muscle Relaxation, compassion). Here, clinicallyrelevant effects may be identified in addition to the positivefindings on acceptance and feasibility.
